Development Buzzwords And Their Characteristics, Elmira Muratova Candidate Of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, Department Of Linguistics And Literature Critical Studies,, Victoria Eolian Teacher, Department Of Theoretical Aspects Of The English Language

Philology Matters

The paper continues to analyze the language of international organizations, its development and importance of its correct understanding in the course of partners’ communication with different languages, which requires translators to be more attentive to avoid discrapencies and confusions while translating dialogues or presentations at some official meetings. The topicality of such research is obvious. Thus in the article the authors decided to discuss a very interesting phenomenon of buzzwords and ‘plastic’ words as a distinct class of words. For that, they reviewed key publications on development discourse and eleven characteristics of development buzzwords and plastic words were identified and …

Urban Space And Politics Of The Everyday: Thinking Through And With The Image In Contemporary Cairo, Darren Spirk Sep 2020

Urban Space And Politics Of The Everyday: Thinking Through And With The Image In Contemporary Cairo, Darren Spirk

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses the increasing eminence of the image within contemporary social theory to intervene into what Tarek Elhaik terms the “sensorial turn” in anthropology. I implement a method of thinking through and with the image that balances creative and critical modalities of engaging socially embedded images beyond a semiotic approach. My entryway into such discussions is seven Cairo films from 2010-2013 that allow us to complicate “pre-” and “post-” revolutionary imaginaries and expand how to see, listen to, and think the political everyday and changing notions of publicness within the city. In tandem with the generative strategies of visual …

Brand Personality And Sexuality Levels Of Luxury Advertisements, Alyssa Dana Adomaitis, Diana Saiki

Publications and Research

This study examined perceived brand attractiveness of and identification with fashion luxury brands given different levels of sexuality in advertisements. Sex in advertisements has become increasingly more common to generate attention and interest in fashion luxury products with limited research on its influence on the consumer. A sample of 1266 males and females completed a survey on brand attractiveness and identification after examining an advertisement of a luxury fashion product. Participants were assigned an advertisement that featured a same-gendered model at one of four levels of sexuality (fully clothed to nude). The results indicated less sexuality in luxury advertisements was …

What A Hybrid Legal-Technical Analysis Teaches Us About Privacy Regulation: The Case Of Singling Out, Micah Altman, Aloni Cohen, Kobbi Nissim, Alexandra Wood Sep 2020

What A Hybrid Legal-Technical Analysis Teaches Us About Privacy Regulation: The Case Of Singling Out, Micah Altman, Aloni Cohen, Kobbi Nissim, Alexandra Wood

Boston University Journal of Science & Technology Law

This article advocates a hybrid legal-technical approach to the evaluation of technical measures designed to render information anonymous in order to bring it outside the scope of data protection regulation. The article demonstrates how such an approach can be used for instantiating a key anonymization concept appearing in the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) -- singling out. The analysis identifies and addresses a tension between a common, compelling theory of singling out and a mathematical analysis of this theory, and it demonstrates how to make determinations regarding the sufficiency of specific technologies for satisfying regulatory requirements for anonymization.

Doubts …

Pilgrim’S Motivations: A Theoretical Approach To Pilgrimage As A Peacebuilding Tool, Sílvia Aulet Serrallonga Sep 2020

Pilgrim’S Motivations: A Theoretical Approach To Pilgrimage As A Peacebuilding Tool, Sílvia Aulet Serrallonga

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This paper will explore the relationship between pilgrimage and peacebuilding. Studies on peace refer to three dimensions: peace from a personal dimension and spiritual sphere; peace from a social dimension and; peace from an environmental dimension (Sánchez Sánchez & Fernández Herreira, 1996). The connection between pilgrimage and peacebuilding starts with the individual quest of pilgrims; however, can be explored in the other two dimensions. The experience of pilgrimage and the pilgrims’ quest for inner peace can enhance a respectful attitude towards people and places. Through interviews and observation on two pilgrimage routes in Spain (the Camino de Santiago and Camino …

A Shared Pilgrimage Road In Israel And Palestine: From Utopia To Reality, Vitor Ambrósio Sep 2020

A Shared Pilgrimage Road In Israel And Palestine: From Utopia To Reality, Vitor Ambrósio

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Most pilgrimages on foot are not a journey undertaken for comfort. Pilgrims going on foot are challenged in multiple forms. Probably to have the physical energy to accomplish the distances of each pilgrimage day is a common goal, also having time to reflect and to meditate is a common characteristic, independent from each pilgrim’s religious belief. Along the Way pilgrims live ‘slow’ experiences, involving themselves with what surrounds them. In those occasions, for most pilgrims, there is an opportunity for better understanding the importance of living in peace in a common world.

Having in mind the Israeli-Palestinian geographic area, the …

Religious Pilgrimage: Experiencing Places, Objects And Events, Ruth Dowson (Rev.) Sep 2020

Religious Pilgrimage: Experiencing Places, Objects And Events, Ruth Dowson (Rev.)

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This article explores the concept of the Eventization of faith (Pfadenhauer, 2010) through application of three case studies, to identify learning that might be applied to a traditional pilgrimage destination, such as Jerusalem. This Holy City is held sacred by the three Abrahamic religions, and faith-based tourism is central both to the Holy Land and to the city of Jerusalem (Leppakari & Griffin, 2017).

This paper builds on research that identifies processes and models that provide insight into the developing concept of the eventization of faith. The work examines outcomes from three different perspectives:

- The impact of traditional church-led …

Motivation For Muslim Travellers To The Holy City Of Jerusalem, Razaq Raj Sep 2020

Motivation For Muslim Travellers To The Holy City Of Jerusalem, Razaq Raj

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This paper discusses and explores empirical and personal insights into religious tourism and pilgrimage, exploring it from a Muslim pilgrims’ perspective, reflecting on characterisations and motivations and discussing the sacred Journey of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from the Holy Mosque (Makkah) to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Travel is important for Muslims. Indeed, it was during the journey of Miraj that Allah ordered Muslims to pray the five daily prayers.

The concept of Islam is not merely praising Allah (SWT). Islam also means to serve society according to the directions of Allah (SWT) and the teachings of his final Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH). …

Role Of Farmer Knowledge In Agroecosystem Science: Rice Farming And Amphibians In The Philippines, Catherine R. Propper, Lisa J. Hardy, Brittni D. Howard, Rica Joy B. Flor, Grant R. Singleton Sep 2020

Role Of Farmer Knowledge In Agroecosystem Science: Rice Farming And Amphibians In The Philippines, Catherine R. Propper, Lisa J. Hardy, Brittni D. Howard, Rica Joy B. Flor, Grant R. Singleton

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Rice (Oryza sativa) agriculture provides food and economic security for nearly half of the world’s population. Rice agriculture is intensive in both land and agrochemical use. However, rice fields also provide aquatic resources for wildlife, including amphibians. In turn, some species may provide ecosystem services back to the farmers working in the rice agroecosystem. The foundation for understanding the complexity of agroecosystem–human relationships requires garnering information regarding human perceptions and knowledge of the role of biodiversity in these rice agroecosystems. Understanding farmer knowledge and perceptions of the ecosystem services provided by wildlife in their fields, along with their …

An Agent-Based Simulation Model For Representing Water Management Strategies In A Large Trans-Boundary River Basin, Jennifer Koch Sep 2020

An Agent-Based Simulation Model For Representing Water Management Strategies In A Large Trans-Boundary River Basin, Jennifer Koch

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Rio Grande/Río Bravo (RGB) Basin is an excellent example of a highly intertwined, freshwater-scarce, socio-environmental system. Past modeling efforts either focused on a subset of this basin with a size of 552,382 km2 and/or implement social processes in an ad-hoc manner, with no socio-environmental modeling approach for the whole RGB in existence. We developed a basin-wide modeling approach with a complex representation of social processes for water resource management and environmental outcomes. We based the analysis of the RGB system on three stages:

Conceptualizing The Effects Of Continuous Traumatic Violence On Hiv Continuum Of Care Outcomes For Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men In The United States, Dexter R. Voisin Sep 2020

Conceptualizing The Effects Of Continuous Traumatic Violence On Hiv Continuum Of Care Outcomes For Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men In The United States, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

The United States (US) is on track to achieve the 90-90-90 targets set forth by UNAIDS and the National HIV/AIDS strategy, yet significant racial disparities in HIV care outcomes remain, particularly for young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM). Research has demonstrated that various types of violence are key aspects of syndemics that contribute to disparities in HIV risk. However, little research has looked collectively at cumulative violent experiences and how those might affect HIV treatment and care outcomes. Drawing on extant literature and theoretical underpinnings of syndemics, we provide a conceptual model that highlights how continuous traumatic …

Identifying Participatory Modeling Best Practices Through Statistical Review Of Case Studies, Emily Bondank Sep 2020

Identifying Participatory Modeling Best Practices Through Statistical Review Of Case Studies, Emily Bondank

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The participatory modeling field has grown quickly and new applications are continuing to be developed. A recent review of participatory modeling case studies has identified that various forms of the practice exist (e.g., different ways to identify participants, define problems, include values, manage power dynamics, etc.), and that practices can generate very important positive outcomes such as knowledge integration, learning, and uncertainty management. However, results found that not all approaches were successful in achieving objectives. The uncertainty in successful practices may discourage practitioners from using this approach and limits future advances in participatory modeling. Therefore, knowing which characteristics are associated …

Engaging Communities In Archaeology On Private Property In An Urban Neighborhood: The Search For The First (1825-1829) Fort Vancouver, Vancouver, Washington, Amy Carolyn Clearman

Dissertations and Theses

Current archaeological literature calls for archaeology to become increasingly relevant in the modern world. Involvement in archaeological research can enhance the relevancy of archaeology for participants of public archaeology projects by strengthening personal connections with heritage and history. To investigate the impact of direct involvement in archaeological research on residents in Vancouver, Washington, I recruited members of two neighborhoods associated with Fort Vancouver National Historic Site to participate in the archaeological search for material remains of the first (1825-1829) Fort Vancouver. I asked the question: How does involvement in a public archaeology project affect participants' feelings about heritage, archaeology, and …

Contentment Or Torment? An Analytic Autoethnography Of Publication Aptitude In Doctor Of Philosophy, Atiqur Sm-Rahman, Yasmin Jahan

The Qualitative Report

The burgeoning trend of pursuing publication in a leading journal, as a benchmark of standard doctoral research, has become an appealing expectation of early-stage doctoral researchers (ESDR). However, recent pedagogical studies showed limited attention to exploring the dynamic relations between doctoral education and the academic publication process. Our aim was to investigate and understand (if and) how this intricately intertwined relation contributes to the scholarly publication practice in doctoral education from an individual and institutional context. We used a duo-analytic autoethnography approach and presented a comprehensive narrative based on the authors’ self-reflections by using a range of data sources namely …
