Stories Of Welcome Blanket Makers: Towards A Philosophy Of Craft, Alesia Maltz Jan 2020

Stories Of Welcome Blanket Makers: Towards A Philosophy Of Craft, Alesia Maltz

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Welcome Blanket was created as a craftivism response to Trump’s call for a border wall. “Imagine if the massive distance of this wall was re-conceptualized and re-contextualized not to divide, but to include. Instead of a wall, a concrete line, to keep people out, what if lines of yarn became 3,500,640 yards of blankets to welcome people in?” The 3,200-blanket goal was quickly achieved and shown in the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. Then, with enclosed notes from the makers welcoming newly arrived immigrants, the blankets were distributed to refugees and immigrants in several resettlement communities …

Creating The Sensible: Weaving The Colonial Aesthetic At A Colonial Obraje, Maria Smith Jan 2020

Creating The Sensible: Weaving The Colonial Aesthetic At A Colonial Obraje, Maria Smith

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

When the Spanish arrived in the Andes, they encountered a rich textile production industry. The colonists quickly recognized the economic opportunity that skilled Andean weavers provided to colonists and in 1545 the first colonial obraje (textile mill) was established in Peru (Silva Santisteban 1964: 18). Roughly twenty-five years later Antonio de Oré established the Obraje de San Marcos de Chincheros outside the colonial city of Huamanga. There Indigenous and mestizo weavers produced textiles that were transported to Cusco to enter the global textile market. At the Obraje, forced Spanish techniques and technologies mixed with the Indigenous techniques and technologies that …

Ties That Bind The Daily Lives Of Carpet Traders: An Ethnographic Exploration Of The Everyday Lives Of Carpet Traders Through Their Kinship Ties, Moral Economies, And Acts Of Everyday Diplomacy In Iran, The Netherlands, Belgium, And Germany, Felix Van Den Belt Jan 2020

Ties That Bind The Daily Lives Of Carpet Traders: An Ethnographic Exploration Of The Everyday Lives Of Carpet Traders Through Their Kinship Ties, Moral Economies, And Acts Of Everyday Diplomacy In Iran, The Netherlands, Belgium, And Germany, Felix Van Den Belt

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

On August 6, 2019, international sanctions on Iran were reintroduced. Through my personal quest to understand the carpet trade, written as an ethnographic exploration, this thesis follows the everyday life trajectories of carpet traders in the context of Iran, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. These life trajectories are made comprehensible based on the themes: Kinship Ties, Moral Economy, and Everyday Diplomacy. In doing this, it contributes to the understanding of global trade networks from the perspective of globalization from below. Few ethnographies are written on the social lives of contemporary carpet traders, but there are many assumptions and opinions on …

The State Of Traditional Albanian Kilims, Their Motifs And Narratives, Alexis Zoto Jan 2020

The State Of Traditional Albanian Kilims, Their Motifs And Narratives, Alexis Zoto

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Albania is a cultural crossroads. Its history is rooted in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. It has been part of the Republic of Venice and part of the Ottoman Empire. It has maintained its own identity and language in spite of many occupiers. Like many of its neighbors, it also has a rich weaving tradition influenced by hundreds of years under Ottoman rule. However, the knowledge of the old ways of this craft is quickly dying out. There are splits in knowledge and documented information between pre-communist Albania and Communist Albania and post-Communist Albania.

In the mid twentieth century …

Crying Out Together: Forming A Hermeneutic Of Powerful Suffering, Harley Burgess Jan 2020

Crying Out Together: Forming A Hermeneutic Of Powerful Suffering, Harley Burgess

MA in Religion Theses

Process theology, along with its connection to questions of suffering and theodicy, presents a perspective that is largely absent within biblical scholarship. Similarly, a lack of clear cohesion with the biblical text is an evident critique of process theology. A hermeneutic that is directly informed by process-oriented passibilism meets a need that is present in both biblical scholarship and process theology, allowing for a deeper understanding of biblical depictions of suffering. This thesis aims to incorporate the theological conclusions of passibilist process theology into a new hermeneutical strategy that will allow for a more comprehensive examination of suffering in the …

Experiences Of Limited English Proficiency (Lep) Patients In Healthcare, Javier Cintron Jan 2020

Experiences Of Limited English Proficiency (Lep) Patients In Healthcare, Javier Cintron

Honors Undergraduate Theses

As the US becomes increasingly more diverse, the presence of non-English speaking individuals also increases. With healthcare being a vital aspect of most individuals’ lives, it is drastically affected by any gap in communication, especially when a language barrier is present. For this investigation, I conducted a research study to examine the experiences of limited English proficiency (LEP) patients in healthcare using anthropological methods. The aim was to understand how having LEP affects patients. The primary form of data collection for this project consisted of Semi-structured interviews with a sample of individuals with LEP. In addition to interviews, I analyzed …

"The Milk Is Love": Understanding Mothers' Emotional Attachment To Breastmilk, Chandel M. Perez Jan 2020

"The Milk Is Love": Understanding Mothers' Emotional Attachment To Breastmilk, Chandel M. Perez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Mothers are known to have an emotional attachment to their infant; however, some mothers also experience an emotional attachment to their own milk. Exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding with complementary solids are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization. Some mothers produce enough surplus milk to donate to a human milk bank. This thesis considers the emotional attachment to milk experienced by women who donate milk to a milk bank. This research is based on participant observation in a human milk bank in Florida and interviews collected …

A Web Of Connections: How Early Twentieth-Century American Women Writers And Photographers Situated A New Way Of Seeing, Kristina Krause Jan 2020

A Web Of Connections: How Early Twentieth-Century American Women Writers And Photographers Situated A New Way Of Seeing, Kristina Krause

CGU Theses & Dissertations

While there are several studies of the relationships and influences between American male photographers and writers, this study examines the lesser known and understudied collaborations and connections between early, twentieth-century American women photographers and writers, beginning around the end of the nineteenth century and extending into the 1930s. The web of connections between women writers and photographers, connections created through influence, through mentorship, through friendship, or through collaboration, provided a space in which they could situate a new way of seeing and defining each other as women and as artists, and it manifested in the empathetic manner in which they …

The Emergence Of Modernity In The Early Aerospace Industry 1950-1970, Lachlan Warwick Sands Jan 2020

The Emergence Of Modernity In The Early Aerospace Industry 1950-1970, Lachlan Warwick Sands

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The literature regarding the management of science during the early aerospace industry between 1950 and 1970, and more specifically the period of Lockheed’s transition from aeronautics into aerospace, is sparse and the subject is insufficiently studied. In this dissertation I examine how the practice of science changed in the United States in the decades after World War II. The scientific endeavor in the United States manifested a transformation from an enlightenment-based set of norms to a new modern ethos. For all intents and purposes, the traditional intellectual boundaries between basic science, applied science, and technology dissolved across the majority of …

Ways, Proofs, And The Intelligibility Of God: Thomas Aquinas’S Five Ways As Leading Into The Intelligibility Of An Existing God, Bruce John Paolozzi Jan 2020

Ways, Proofs, And The Intelligibility Of God: Thomas Aquinas’S Five Ways As Leading Into The Intelligibility Of An Existing God, Bruce John Paolozzi

CGU Theses & Dissertations

There is some question about how to understand Thomas Aquinas’s five ways of demonstrating that God exists. Often philosophers and theologians portray Thomas as a strict Aristotelian rationalist with a strong emphasis on syllogistic epistemology. Against this view a competing existential, metaphysical, and theological understanding of the five ways has been gradually gaining ground, beginning in the early 20th century, due to the work of existential Thomists such as Etienne Gilson, Jacques Maritain, and Joseph Owen. This understanding has been expanded more recently in the work of John Wippel and others. The rise of the existential view has led to …

Said The River: The Confluence Of Ecotheology And Water, Margaret Harrington Ferris Jan 2020

Said The River: The Confluence Of Ecotheology And Water, Margaret Harrington Ferris

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Environmental water issues are increasingly in the consciousness of environmental advocates, as well as scientists and engineers. Water experts have approached water issues from a scientific and engineering framework, which has led them to preference material and technical solutions. Yet those solutions have been insufficient. The interdisciplinary field of water studies has been critical of the scientific-engineering approach. Several water scholars have posited that water issues are social-human problems first, and material-technical problems second. They call for alternative approaches that emphasize reconstructing water as a necessary precursor to formulating effective, enduring solutions to environmental water issues. Likewise, ecotheological scholars and …

Factors Influencing The Retention And Graduation Of Latino Male Students: Four-Year Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Freddie Sánchez

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative dissertation explores factors that contribute to first-generation Latino male retention and graduation at California State Universities (CSU) that are also designated as Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI). This study is informed by the main research question: How do Latino males use their own Community Cultural Wealth for their retention while enrolled at southern California CSUs designated as Hispanic-Serving Institutions? Utilizing Yosso (2005) Community Cultural Wealth model as the Theoretical framework guiding the research study, the study explores how participants used the various forms of capital: Aspirational, Familial, Linguistic, Navigational, Resistant and Social to successfully graduate. A phenomenological design was used …

Toward A New Conception Of Human Subjectivity For The Age Of Globalization: Revisiting The Hegelian Vision Of “Spiritual Subjectivity”, Yun Kwon Yoo Jan 2020

Toward A New Conception Of Human Subjectivity For The Age Of Globalization: Revisiting The Hegelian Vision Of “Spiritual Subjectivity”, Yun Kwon Yoo

CGU Theses & Dissertations

My major argument in this dissertation is that Hegelian spiritual subjectivity can and should serve as a philosophical basis for envisioning a new conception of human subjectivity for the age of globalization. Why, then, does globalization demand a new conception of human subjectivity at all? What constitutes the Hegelian spiritual subjectivity such that it is not only relevant and but also necessary to the contemporary, postmodern context of globalization? My dissertation largely addresses these two questions. As for the first question, it requires my critical analysis of the context in which we are living. We are living in an era …

Anna Julia Cooper: Radical Relationality And The Ethics Of Interdependence, Carol Wayne White Jan 2020

Anna Julia Cooper: Radical Relationality And The Ethics Of Interdependence, Carol Wayne White

Faculty Contributions to Books

In her range of activities as orator, scholar, community activist, and educator, Anna Julia Cooper demonstrates a basic orientation toward life that paradigmatically exemplifies a proto-feminist politics based in intersectional analysis. Addressing problematic gendered, racialized, and class power dynamics in various institutions, Cooper sought a readjustment of relationships among all Americans that would ensure the dignity and worth of each individual. A close reading of her corpus also shows Cooper consistently identifying principles that advanced nuanced approaches to justice, freedom, and equality. In this chapter, I propose that Cooper’s mature intellectual vision demonstrates a particular vision of a transformed America, …

Jetsam ambergris, found on beaches worldwide, has always been assumed to originate as a natural product of sperm whales (Physeteroidea). However, only indirect evidence has ever been produced for this, such as the presence of whale prey remains in ambergris. Here, we extracted and analysed DNA sequences from jetsam ambergris from beaches in New Zealand and Sri Lanka, and sequences from ambergris of a sperm whale beached in The Netherlands. The lipid-rich composition of ambergris facilitated high preservation-quality of endogenous DNA, upon which we performed shotgun Illumina sequencing. Alignment of mitochondrial and nuclear genome sequences with open-access reference data for …

Basalt Leaching in Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Rock Gardens Favours Agricultural Surplus Production

Elisabeth Burns, Depts. of Anthropology and Gender, Sexuality, & Women’s Studies, with Dr. Christopher Stevenson, Dept. of Anthropology

In an effort to provide evidential support for the process of basaltic mineral dissolution replenishing soil fertility and enabling productive plant growth in Rapa Nui rock gardens, a simulated leaching experiment was conducted to determine the elemental release rates from the basalt matrix, and the availability of these elements for plant absorption. The dissolution experiment modeled Rapa Nui soil conditions and rainwater with a pH of 6.3. Basalt leaching …

The Relationship Between Enslaved Individuals And Plantation Architecture In 18th And 19th Century Virginia

Emma Clark, Depts. of History and Anthropology, with Dr. Bernard K. Means, Dept. of Anthropology

Enslaved labor built the physical environment of 18th and 19th century plantations from slave quarters to plantation houses. These built environments were designed in a way to showcase the stratification between enslavers and the enslaved. An analysis of plantation archaeology on three significant Virginian plantations can reveal two aspects of the relationship between enslaved individuals and plantation architecture. First, it can reveal the physical process of construction (brickmaking, building development). Second, …

The Stages of Justice: Sketching the Sculpture of William Rush

Jae Ricketts, with Dr. Bernard Means, Dept. of Anthropology

This poster displays a portion of the illustrative work that I did for Dr. Bernard Means at VCU’s Virtual Curation Lab (VCL). Using 3D scans procured by Dr. Means, I was able to create sketches of the work of William Rush, an American neoclassical sculptor. My poster focuses specifically on the illustrative process that I went through when drawing Rush’s sculpture called Justice. Dr. Means’ scans of Justice, made publicly available on the VCL’s Sketchfab site, allowed me to complete this …

Storytelling Through Play

Allison Heerwagen, Depts. of Graphic Design and Anthropology, with Dr. Bernard K. Means, Dept. of Anthropology

As children interpret and build on narratives with their own imagination, storytelling as a cultural practice involves even the youngest of a community. Children raised with folktales, myths, legends, and more can bring the stories to life through play inspired by the characters, setting, and stories shared with them. The most accessible tools for children to share and build stories are toys that can be used to interpret the beliefs, practices, and imagination of their culture. In addition, many children’s toys …

"The limbs of soldiers are in as much danger from the ardor of young surgeons as from the missiles of the enemy."

-Surgeon Julian John Chisholm, 1864

Civil War medicine was highly dependent on the profession and education of those practicing medicine on the battlefield. Throughout the states that were involved with the war are burial grounds of soldiers or partial remains post amputation. Are there indicators of differing probabilities of survival of amputees at field hospitals or (traditional) established hospitals? Were soldiers …
