How Palestinian Aid Organizations Adapt To The Possibility Of Further Annexation And Rights Abuses In The Wake Of "The Deal Of The Century", Nadia L. Wiggins Dec 2020

How Palestinian Aid Organizations Adapt To The Possibility Of Further Annexation And Rights Abuses In The Wake Of "The Deal Of The Century", Nadia L. Wiggins

Capstone Collection

This research explores the question, “To what extent has the ‘Deal of the Century’ impacted Palestinian aid organizations, and how might it impact them in the future?” The significance of this question lies in the fact that the “Deal of the Century” claims to solve one of the longest and most complex conflicts, yet it has not been sufficiently analyzed from a Palestinian perspective nor a humanitarian perspective. Furthermore, by presenting scholarly critiques of the deal and aid worker’s concerns, my hope is that an American audience may be convinced of the complicity of our government in devising a failed …

Why Dogs Are Feared, Hannah Ericson Dec 2020

Why Dogs Are Feared, Hannah Ericson

Fall Student Research Symposium 2020

From German Shepherds to Pit bulls, a specific breed of dog is often singled out as being more dangerous than the others. There are stories and myths behind the behavior of such breeds, as well as simply looking scary. In this presentation, I will discuss why certain traits in dogs promote fear (such as dark coloring) and why certain breeds promote fear - such as a modern day prejudice that is quite similar to racism in the human society.

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We explore marine reservoir effects (MREs) in seal bones from the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas regions. Ringed and bearded seals have served as dietary staples in human populations along the coasts of Arctic northeast Asia and North America for several millennia. Radiocarbon (14C) dates on seal bones and terrestrial materials (caribou, plants seeds, wood, and wood charcoal) were compared from archaeological sites in the Bering Strait region of northwestern Alaska to assess MREs in these sea mammals over time. We also compared these results to 14C dates on modern seal specimens collected in AD 1932 and …

Geographic Monitoring For Early Disease Detection (Geomedd), Andrew Curtis, Jayakrishnan Ajayakumar, Jacqueline Curtis, Sorapat Vijitakula, Justin Yax

Faculty Scholarship

Identifying emergent patterns of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at the local level presents a geographic challenge. The need is not only to integrate multiple data streams from different sources, scales, and cadences, but to also identify meaningful spatial patterns in these data, especially in vulnerable settings where even small numbers and low rates are important to pinpoint for early intervention. This paper identifies a gap in current analytical approaches and presents a near-real time assessment of emergent disease that can be used to guide a local intervention strategy: Geographic Monitoring for Early Disease Detection (GeoMEDD). Through integration of a spatial …

The Intersection Of Food Deserts And Food Assistance Deserts In El Paso County, Texas, Jacob Joseph Aun Dec 2020

The Intersection Of Food Deserts And Food Assistance Deserts In El Paso County, Texas, Jacob Joseph Aun

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Although access to both supermarkets and food assistance sites are important for addressing food insecurity, previous studies have not examined how food deserts and food assistance deserts spatially coincide or analyzed their characteristics separately. This thesis sought to address this gap by identifying the locations and socio-demographic characteristics of neighborhoods classified on the basis of multiple food access categories in El Paso County, Texas: food deserts, food assistance deserts, and areas where both food deserts and food assistance deserts overlap. The goal was to determine if racial/ethnic minorities and other socially disadvantaged individuals are more likely to reside in neighborhoods …

Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices Towards Covid-19 Among Pakistani Residents: Information Access And Low Literacy Vulnerabilities, Zafar Fatmi, Shafaq Mahmood, Waqas Hameed, Ibtisam Qazi, Muhammad Siddiqui, Anny Dhanwani, Sameen Siddiqi

Community Health Sciences

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has accentuated the need for speedy access to information. Digital divide and socio-demographic disparity create an information hiatus and therefore unhealthy practices with regard to dealing with COVID-19, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Aims: We assessed knowledge, attitudes, practices and their determinants regarding COVID-19 in Pakistan during March-April 2020.
Methods: 905 adults ≥18 years (males and females) participated: 403 from a web-based survey; 365 from an urban survey; and 137 from a rural survey. Frequency of adequate knowledge, attitudes and practices for the three populations was determined based on available global guidelines. Multivariable logistic regression …

“Space For All?”: An Analysis Of Race, Gender, And Society In The Cult Classic Doctor Who., Liron Sussman

Honors Theses

Much like the Doctor, people are constantly growing and evolving, and it is out of a desire for human connection that people strive, always, to improve and as a long-running television program, Doctor Who reflects that desire for connection. This analysis explores race, gender, and society as portrayed in the modern series of Doctor Who (2005-).

Translating Greek Mythology In Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction, Emily Olive Moore Dec 2020

Translating Greek Mythology In Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction, Emily Olive Moore

Theses and Dissertations

Given its early connection to western science fiction, it is not entirely surprising that contemporary Chinese science fiction (csf) frequently references the "west" in general and Greek mythology in particular. The three works that I analyze in this paper are Xia Jia's "Psychology Game," Gu Shi's "Chimera," and Egoyan Zheng's The Dream Devourer. These three texts utilize Greek mythology in different ways, to different degrees, and with different purposes, and yet they all use Greek mythology to visually disrupt their respective texts. Xia Jia ends "Psychology Game" with a direct Greek-language quotation. Throughout "Chimera," Gu Shi quotes Chinese translations of …

Scale Development And Validation Of Anime Tourism Motivations, Shang Liu, Dan Lai, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Zhiyong Li Dec 2020

Scale Development And Validation Of Anime Tourism Motivations, Shang Liu, Dan Lai, Songshan (Sam) Huang, Zhiyong Li

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Anime tourism has emerged as an important form of tourism resulted from both online and offline human activities and interactions. However, investigations into anime tourism motivations remain limited. Using Chinese anime tourists as study subjects and employing a mixed methods approach, this study develops a five-dimension anime tourism motivation scale with sufficient reliability and validity. The five motivational factors are anime authenticity seeking, novelty, escape/relaxation, socialisation, and anime cultural exploration. The results help understand unique anime tourist behaviours, expand the current knowledge of media-induced tourism, and extend contemporary cultural consumption literature. Based on the results, theoretical and managerial implications were …

Intersectionality Shapes Adaptation To Social-Ecological Change, Anna Erwin, Zhao Ma, Ruxandra Popovici, Emma Patricia Salas O'Brien, Jonathan Bauchet, Nelly Ramirez Calderón, Glenn Roberto Arce Larrea

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

People from across the Caylloma Province of Peru are adapting to social-ecological changes, such as decreasing water supplies and rapidly retreating glaciers, in different and unequal ways. In this study, we show how this inequality is intersectional; identities like gender and age compound and interact with systems of power to shape how people adapt to these changes at the individual, household, and district scales. We draw from 130 semi-structured interviews with agricultural actors and participant observations in district and regional meetings across four districts, to demonstrate how intersectionality shapes adaptation to social-ecological change. Our results show (1) what social-ecological changes …

The Rationality Of Motherhood, Genevieve Kineke Dec 2020

The Rationality Of Motherhood, Genevieve Kineke

Theology Graduate Theses

Since both men and women, made in the divine image, bear rational souls, and the Catholic understanding of redemption requires that persons respond freely to the gift of grace, Saint Paul’s comment to Timothy that women can be saved through childbearing (cf. 1 Timothy 2:13-15) indicates that motherhood must be rational. This thesis responds to three different arguments against that premise—those of Simone deBeauvoir, Julia Kristeva, and Gertrude von le Fort—by illustrating that Thomas Aquinas’ application of Aristotelian principles restores both a proper understanding of rationality and how our hylemorphic construct directs us to our supernatural end. Weaving together a …

Symposium Review Of The Lives Of Amish Women—Karen Johnson-Weiner, Gracia Miller, Sheila Petre, Vlatka Škender

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Who should respond to a cultural anthropologist’s monograph about Amish women? In developing a symposium for Karen Johnson-Weiner’s The Lives of Amish Women, the author’s own text provided an answer. Inasmuch as Johnson-Weiner frequently quotes the voices of Amish women, how about an Amish woman offering an unmediated voice? And inasmuch as Johnson-Weiner quotes many plain Anabaptist women authors, how about one of the writers whom she discusses, an opportunity for the spoken about to speak back? And, finally, inasmuch as Johnson-Weiner’s disciplinary home is cultural anthropology, what about a cultural anthropologist who is experienced in Amish research?

And …

An Indian Burial Site At Crystal River, Florida, F. G. Rainey Dec 2020

An Indian Burial Site At Crystal River, Florida, F. G. Rainey

Florida Historical Quarterly

Crystal river rises in a group of large springs a few miles south of the Withlacoochee river on the west coast of Florida and flows westward for eight miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Fish are abundant in the river and the small town of Crystal River situated at the source owes its existence to an extensive fishing industry carried on in the region. Large oyster beds lie just off the mouth of the river and supply oysters to many cities in Florida.

Anthropology In Florida, Rhea M. Smith Dec 2020

Anthropology In Florida, Rhea M. Smith

Florida Historical Quarterly

Any attempt to investigate the origin and customs of the aborigines of Florida through reliance on written materials is almost immediately frustrated by the paucity of such material and the scantiness of data available. Even an attempt to summarize the work done by field investigators leads to the baffling task of trying to reconcile conflicting theories, a condition that arises from the fact that the conclusions reached as to the origin, antiquity, and life of the early peoples of Florida are so indefinite. Yet there are few regions in the United States more abundantly supplied with mounds that call for …

Farmers’ Place-Based Discourse About Water Relations: Ways Of Knowing Water And Multispecies Survival, Jeffrey Alan Hoffmann Dec 2020

Farmers’ Place-Based Discourse About Water Relations: Ways Of Knowing Water And Multispecies Survival, Jeffrey Alan Hoffmann

Communication ETDs

The present study looks at farmers’ discourse about water and water relations. Through qualitative interviews using the method of cultural discourse analysis (CuDA), and the framework of ecocultural dialectics, the study reveals how, as farmers talk about water, they also make explicit and implicit arguments about specific cultural relations with the biosphere, as well as the role of identity, place, and power in designing and implementing agricultural solutions to ecological and social problems. I argue that the contradictions in how farmers discursively envision the problems of water pollution and scarcity, as well as solutions to those problems in their farming …

Impact Of The Covid-19 On Religious Practices Of Muslim Students In Higher Education, Amir Duric Dec 2020

Impact Of The Covid-19 On Religious Practices Of Muslim Students In Higher Education, Amir Duric

Muslim Student Life

Implications of religious practices in Islam go far beyond religiosity, and this paper analyzed the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic and religious practices of Muslim students in higher education. The analyzed data is from the survey of the Muslim Student Life at Syracuse University and the Center for Islam in Contemporary World at Shenandoah University. The survey was conducted through a non-random convenience sampling from March 30th through April 10th of 2020 and had 498 responders. For this study, I analyzed 272 who provided their demographic information. The paper hypothesized and confirmed an overall increase in the engagement with the …

Quantitative Description Of The Pastoral Economy Of Western Tuvan Nomads, Paul L. Hooper Dec 2020

Quantitative Description Of The Pastoral Economy Of Western Tuvan Nomads, Paul L. Hooper

ESI Publications

Nomadic pastoralism persists at a substantial scale in Tuva and neighboring regions of Inner Asia. Tuvan pastoral lifeways reflect adaptations to both local environments and current economic realities. Much of our quantitative understanding of the economics of Tuvan nomads is derived from data collected in the first half of the 20th century. Accordingly, this paper provides an updated picture of the inner workings of nomadic households using data collected in Barun-Khemchik and Bai-Taiga provinces in 2013–2015. It analyzes herd composition and size, and compares the frequency of different animals kept today with values recorded in Tuva in 1916 and 1931. …
