Pillars Of Sustainable Development–Land Capability And Conceptual Project Design, Ian D. Hollingsworth
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Conserving land capability is a pillar of sustainable development strategy. Land units comprising unique combinations of native vegetation, soils, geology, and landforms are used to interpret local environmental processes and land capabilities. An emerging practice is extrapolation modeling of edaphic parameter surfaces in Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) using statistical correlation. Commercial studies of land capability for sustainable development, including a mine closure in a national park, another closure for grazing land restoral, urban stormwater flood mitigation, and wind farm development in plantation forestry, are presented to illustrate applications and review the utility of DSM data. The first case, a mine …

Effects Of Calcination Temperature Of Naturally Occurring Absorbents On Drinking Water Defluoridation, Brenda Mndolwa
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Currently, in Tanzania, fluoride removal from drinking water is treated mostly using the bone char method. The method has poor acceptability in some religious communities and also causes water quality deterioration in taste and odour if the bones are not properly prepared. The use of local natural adsorbents as an alternative is feasible with limitations of high levels of other impurities in treated water. Locally available gypsum, magnesite and bauxite were converted to adsorbents through calcination. The study was conducted to determine the removal efficiency, best calcination temperature and composite ratio of the three adsorbents for the removal of fluoride …

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Two important skills for scientists in developmental and cell biology, as well as in fields such as neurobiology, histology and pathology, are: 1) observation of features and details in microscopic images of cells, and 2) quantification of cellular features observed in microscopic images. However, current training in developmental and cell biology does not emphasize observation and quantitative analysis of microscopic images, and it is unclear how best to teach students these skills. Here, we describe our experiences applying visual artistic approaches to instruct undergraduate and graduate students in how to observe and analyze cellular forms in microscopic images. At Loyola …

Transfer Of Referential Meanings In Literary Translation, Nigora Uralova, Mamasharif Pardayev
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article depicts the main problem that the translator encounters when transferring referential meanings expressed in the source text is the discrepancy between the range of meanings inherent in the FL (first language) and TL (target language) units. The author samples the semantic units - morphemes, stable phrases, that are completely coincide in the entire volume of their referential meanings. The article approves that expressed meanings (“concepts”) themselves are mostly the same, but the ways of expressing them - their grouping, division and unification, combination within one formal unit (several units), as a rule, in different languages diverge more or …

Artificial Intelligence (AI), in general, refers to the machines (or computers) that mimic "cognitive" functions that we associate with our mind, such as "learning" and "solving problem". New biomarkers derived from medical imaging are being discovered and are then fused with non-imaging biomarkers (such as office, laboratory, physiological, genetic, epidemiological, and clinical-based biomarkers) in a big data framework, to develop AI systems. These systems can support risk prediction and monitoring. This perspective narrative shows the powerful methods of AI for tracking cardiovascular risks. We conclude that AI could potentially become an integral part of the COVID-19 disease management system. Countries, …

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse
Let me first of all thank the organizers of this Conference for inviting me to participate in this launch ceremony. Am glad that this Report takes stock of the current status of Islamic Economy and has thematic focus on the state of halal products market.
May I suggest that the report should not be complacent and self-congratulatory but position the Muslim countries against established international benchmarks. For example, what is the share of these countries in global halal products market? What percentage of global financial assets belong to Islamic financial assets? Are we capturing or losing market shares? The analysis …

Detecting Feeding And Estimating The Energetic Costs Of Diving In California Sea Lions (Zalophus Californianus) Using 3-Axis Accelerometers, Mason Russell Cole
Master's Theses
Knowledge of when animals feed and the energetic costs of foraging is key to understanding their foraging ecology and energetic trade-offs. Despite this importance, our ability to collect these data in marine mammals remains limited. In this thesis, I address knowledge gaps in both feeding detection and fine-scale diving energetic costs in a model species, the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus). I first developed and tested an analysis method to accurately detect prey capture using 3-axis accelerometers mounted on the head and back of two trained sea lions. An acceleration signal pattern isolated from a ‘training’ subset of synced video …
