Organophosphate Hydrolase Interacts With Ferric-Enterobactin And Promotes Iron Uptake In Association With Tonb-Dependent Transport System, Hari Parapatla, Ramurthy Gudla, Guruprasad Varma Konduru, Elsin Raju Devadasu

Open Access archive

Our previous studies have shown the existence of organophosphate hydrolase (OPH) as a part of the inner membrane associated Ton complex (ExbB/ExbD and TonB) of Sphingobium fuliginis. We now show its involvement in iron uptake by establishing direct interactions with ferric-enterobactin. The interactions between OPH and ferric-enterobactin were not affected even when the active site architecture is altered by substituting active site aspartate with either alanine or asparagine. Protein docking studies further substantiated these findings and predicted the existence of ferric-enterobactin binding site that is different from the catalytic site of OPH. A lysine residue (82K) found at the predicted …

Dysregulation of BCL2 is a pathophysiology observed in haematological malignancies. For implementation of available treatment-options it is preferred to know the relative quantification of BCL2 mRNA with appropriate reference genes. For the choice of reference genes-(i) Reference Genes were selected by assessing variation of >60,000 genes from 4 RNA-seq datasets of haematological malignancies followed by filtering based on their GO biological process annotations and proximity of their chromosomal locations to known disease translocations. Selected genes were experimentally validated across various haematological malignancy samples followed by stability comparison using geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper and RefFinder. (ii) 43 commonly used Reference Genes were …

Lysine-specific demethylase 5B (KDM5B/PLU1/JARID1B) is found to be overexpressed in numerous malignancies, including breast, lung, skin, liver, and prostate cancer. Identification of molecules targeting the KDM5B enzyme could be a potential lead in cancer research. Although many KDM5B inhibitors with promising outcomes have been developed so far, its further application in clinical practice is limited due to toxicity and lack of target specificity. Here, we summarize the significance of targeting KDM5B in anticancer therapy and report the molecular docking studies of some known anti-viral agents, decitabine, entecavir, abacavir, penciclovir, and 3-deazaneplanocin A in the catalytic domain JmjC of KDM5B. These …

Fibrocellular membrane or epiretinal membrane (ERM) forms on the surface of the inner limiting membrane (ILM) in the inner retina and alters the structure and function of the retina. ERM formation is frequently observed in ocular inflammatory conditions, such as proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and retinal detachment (RD). Although peeling of the ERM is used as a surgical intervention, it can inadvertently distort the retina. Our goal is to design alternative strategies to tackle ERMs. As a first step, we sought to determine the composition of the ERMs by identifying the constituent cell-types and gene expression signature in patient samples. …

Three Essays On Ceo Activism, Strategic Choices And Firm Performance, Keshab Acharya Aug 2020

Three Essays On Ceo Activism, Strategic Choices And Firm Performance, Keshab Acharya

Theses and Dissertations

There is a longstanding societal expectation that business leaders refrain from involving in social and political issues and primarily focus on managing their firms. In recent years, however, there is a growing trend of CEOs taking a stance on controversial sociopolitical issues that are not directly related to their company’s core business. This dissertation consists of three essays focusing on this phenomenon of CEO activism.

In my first essay, given that CEO activism represents a nascent phenomenon, I explore the conceptualization of CEO activism. Additionally, I propose three main motives behind CEO activism: intrinsic, instrumental, and stakeholder-focused. In my second …

Development Of Plant Extract-Based Composite Fibers And Aerogels, Raul C. Barbosa

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study is to use the solid templating process of pullulan nanofibers in order to produce biocompatible, biodegradable, and antibacterial aerogels. The developed aerogels were produced using cross-linked pullulan nanofibers, which provide a water-stable structure allowing them to be used as wound dressing material. The morphology, thermal properties, water solubility, and thermal and physical properties of the nanofibers and aerogels were characterized. Furthermore, the antibacterial effect against gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, and the biocompatibility using mouse embryonic fibroblasts (NIH 3T3) were investigated.

Examining The Efficacy Of Cover Crops As An Integrated Pest Management Tool In Organic Farms In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Lili M. Martinez Aug 2020

Examining The Efficacy Of Cover Crops As An Integrated Pest Management Tool In Organic Farms In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Lili M. Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

The Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) consists of a mix in subtropical and costal habitats, a combination that provides a favorable environment for the animals and plants that inhabit it. This is a problem for organic farmers as they refrain from using synthetic chemicals and therefore led them to seek other methods of dealing with insect herbivory. Of the many alternative methods available, we looked specifically at integrated pest management methods (IPM) to determine their efficacy in reducing insect herbivory among cash crops. Chapter II discusses an experiment performed in an organic farm in Edinburg, Texas consisting of a two-year …

The Impact Of Racial Identity In College Planning Resources For African American Students Considering Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcu), Camille Franklin Aug 2020

The Impact Of Racial Identity In College Planning Resources For African American Students Considering Historically Black Colleges And Universities (Hbcu), Camille Franklin

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) have always impacted the education of African Americans. Their mission was always grounded in educating Black Americans during a time when laws and segregation prevented that from happening. HBCUs have a historic responsibility as the primary providers of post-secondary education for African Americans in a social environment of racial discrimination (Johnson, 2019). By the turn of the century, there was a shift in blacks being educated solely by HBCU’s. In 1950 most, black students attended an HBCU but by 1975 it was only 25%, and in 2015 only 9% of black students were enrolled …

Surface Levels, Keisha Brathwaite Aug 2020

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Surface Levels are depictions of unobserved and imperceptible realities of many phytoplankton exteriors. The exhibition explores various structures, textures, and repetitious forms from microscopic surfaces of objects that cannot be seen with unaided eyes. Electron microscopy is used to perceive and analyze these otherwise unseeable surfaces in depth. Magnifications provide a reference in creating three- and two-dimensional works that are minimalistic and abstract at a visible level. This abstract 3D/2D image collection is translated into material expressions using acrylic sheets, acrylic ink, and wood as the main media for construction of individual works. Collectively, they serve to make the invisible …

Eagle Creek Post-Fire Monitoring For Water Temperature & Water Stage, Sylas Daughtrey Aug 2020

Eagle Creek Post-Fire Monitoring For Water Temperature & Water Stage, Sylas Daughtrey

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

When investigating forested watersheds devastated by wildfire, the wide range of disturbance can lead to altering hydrological effects through the loss in ground cover vegetation, canopy cover, while also disrupting soil characteristics. Within the Pacific Northwest, forested drainages affected by post-fire disturbance are further altered in areas that experience seasonal rainfall and snow melt events. When looking at the post-fire sloped areas of Eagle Creek and Tanner Creek within the Columbia Gorge of Oregon, the loss of ground cover and organic matter throughout these two watersheds pose a legitimate concern for erosion events as well as hydrological changes due to …

One In The Hand Worth Two In The Bush? Reproductive Effort Of Young Males Is Not Affected By The Presence Of Adult Males, Kevin L. Monteith, Kyle B. Monteith, Jonathan A. Jenks, Rhiannon P. Jakopak Aug 2020

One In The Hand Worth Two In The Bush? Reproductive Effort Of Young Males Is Not Affected By The Presence Of Adult Males, Kevin L. Monteith, Kyle B. Monteith, Jonathan A. Jenks, Rhiannon P. Jakopak

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Reproduction is a costly endeavor, and most large, long-lived, and iteroparous mammals exhibit conservative life-history tactics wherein an individual may forego or abandon a reproduction event for the sake of survival. Nevertheless, risks and benefits associated with reproduction are not equal across males and females, nor across their life. Whereas expenditure for females is associated with rearing young (e.g., lactation), expenditure for males occurs with securing mating opportunities. Young males may be more successful when dominant males are lacking, but it is less clear whether—and at what cost—young males will expend effort when those opportunities arise. We designed an experiment …

Causal Explanations For The Evolution Of ‘Low Gear’ Locomotion In Insular Ruminants, Roberto Rozzi, Sara Varela, Pere Bover, Jeff Martin

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Aim: Mammals on islands often undergo remarkable evolutionary changes. The acquisition of ‘low gear’ locomotion, namely short and robust limb elements, has been typically associated with the island syndrome in large mammals and, especially, ruminants. Here we provide an investigative framework to examine biotic and abiotic selective factors hypothesized to influence evolution of this peculiar type of gait. Location: Islands worldwide.
Taxon: Bovidae.
Methods: We calculated response variables associated with ‘low gear’ locomotion in 21 extinct and extant insular bovids. We assembled data on the physiography of 11 islands and on life history and ecological traits of the focal taxa. …

Collective Spectral Density Estimation And Clustering For Spatially-Correlated Data, Tianbo Chen, Ying Sun, Mehdi Maadooliat Aug 2020

Collective Spectral Density Estimation And Clustering For Spatially-Correlated Data, Tianbo Chen, Ying Sun, Mehdi Maadooliat

Mathematical and Statistical Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we develop a method for estimating and clustering two-dimensional spectral density functions (2D-SDFs) for spatial data from multiple subregions. We use a common set of adaptive basis functions to explain the similarities among the 2D-SDFs in a low-dimensional space and estimate the basis coefficients by maximizing the Whittle likelihood with two penalties. We apply these penalties to impose the smoothness of the estimated 2D-SDFs and the spatial dependence of the spatially-correlated subregions. The proposed technique provides a score matrix, that is comprised of the estimated coefficients associated with the common set of basis functions representing the 2D-SDFs. …

The Role Of Masculinity In The Development Of Capability For Suicide, Claire Houtsma Aug 2020

The Role Of Masculinity In The Development Of Capability For Suicide, Claire Houtsma

Dissertations

Males account for over two-thirds of suicide deaths annually. Additionally, more than 50% of American suicide deaths annually are firearm-related. Suicide risk is elevated within firearm owning households and men are more likely to own firearms, which suggests that male firearm owners are at disproportionate risk for suicide. Prior research has argued that certain stereotypically male traits (e.g., lack of help-seeking) may explain sex differences in suicide death; however, this remains a poorly understood phenomenon. Male gender norms (e.g. physical toughness, self-reliance) may contribute to the development or expression of capability for suicide, primarily through their impact on behavior. The …

The Roles Of Violence Exposure And Gender On The Relationship Between Adolescent Psychopathic And Conduct Disorder Traits And The Capability For Suicide, Tiffany Harrop Aug 2020

The Roles Of Violence Exposure And Gender On The Relationship Between Adolescent Psychopathic And Conduct Disorder Traits And The Capability For Suicide, Tiffany Harrop

Dissertations

Suicide represents one of the leading causes of mortality for adolescents. Externalizing behaviors, such as psychopathic and conduct disorder traits, represent risk factors for adolescent suicide. Investigation of suicide capability is especially important, as it is theorized to distinguish individuals who evince suicide ideation from those who progress to making a suicide attempt. Currently, associations between psychopathic and conduct disorder traits and capability in youth are understudied, as well as factors that may potentiate these associations, such as exposure to violence and gender. The aim of this study was to explore the interactive nature of psychopathic and conduct disorder traits, …

Radiotherapy is a commonly used conditioning regimen for bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Cytotoxicity limits the use of this life-saving therapy, but the underlying mechanisms remain poorly defined. Here, we use the syngeneic mouse BMT model to test the hypothesis that lethal radiation damages tissues, thereby unleashing signals that indiscriminately activate the inflammasome pathways in host and transplanted cells. We find that a clinically relevant high dose of radiation causes severe damage to bones and the spleen through mechanisms involving the NLRP3 and AIM2 inflammasomes but not the NLRC4 inflammasome. Downstream, we demonstrate that gasdermin D (GSDMD), the common effector of …

Dopamine D2 Receptor Signaling On Imsns Is Required For Initiation And Vigor Of Learned Actions, Shana M Augustin, Gabriel C Loewinger, Timothy J O'Neal, Alexxai V Kravitz, David M Lovinger

Open Access Publications

Striatal dopamine D2 receptors (D2Rs) are important for motor output. Selective deletion of D2Rs from indirect pathway-projecting medium spiny neurons (iMSNs) impairs locomotor activities in a task-specific manner. However, the role of D2Rs in the initiation of motor actions in reward seeking and taking is not fully understood, and there is little information about how receptors contribute under different task demands and with different outcome types. The iMSN-D2Rs modulate neuronal activity and synaptic transmission, exerting control on circuit functions that may play distinct roles in action learning and performance. Selective deletion of D2Rs on iMSNs resulted in slower action initiation …

Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) expression is increased on hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and enhanced TLR2 signaling is thought to contribute to MDS pathogenesis. Notably, TLR2 heterodimerizes with TLR1 or TLR6, and while high TLR2 is associated with lower-risk disease, high TLR6, but not TLR1, correlates with higher-risk disease. This raises the possibility of heterodimer-specific effects of TLR2 signaling in MDS, and in the work described here, we tested the effects of specific modulation of TLR1/2 versus TLR2/6 signaling on premalignant HSPCs. Indeed, chronic stimulation of TLR2/6, but not TLR1/2, accelerates leukemic transformation …

The Role Of Skeletal Muscle-Synthesized Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor In The Maintenance Of Motor Neuron Mitochondrial Populations, Mikel Cawley Aug 2020

The Role Of Skeletal Muscle-Synthesized Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor In The Maintenance Of Motor Neuron Mitochondrial Populations, Mikel Cawley

All NMU Master's Theses

Mitochondria are essential for the high energy demands of the neuromuscular junction and, as a consequence, leave motorneurons susceptible to dysfunction. A potential origin of progressive pathology may be a reduction in brain-derived neurotrophic-factor (BDNF) signaling at the motor unit. We have shown that mice deficient in skeletal muscle-synthesized BDNF (msBDNF) demonstrate progressive motorneuron and muscle pathology at 120d. We hypothesize mitochondrial populations will be altered in motorneurons of msBDNF deficient-mice. At 117d, msBDNF deficient-mice received intramuscular injections of MitoTracker™ dye targeting the right gastrocnemius muscle. At 120d experimental groups underwent a gastrocnemius harvest or a sciatic nerve ligation protocol …

Ecological Factors Influencing Infection Rates Of The Birch Polypore Inonotus Obliquus In The Laurentian Mixed Forest Province, Anna R. Slowik Aug 2020

Ecological Factors Influencing Infection Rates Of The Birch Polypore Inonotus Obliquus In The Laurentian Mixed Forest Province, Anna R. Slowik

All NMU Master's Theses

Inonotus obliquus, a conk forming polypore parasitic to birch (Betula spp.) trees in northern hardwood forests around the world, has been harvested intensively in recent years for its potentially medicinal properties. However, there is a dearth of ecological understanding of this fungus; even basic infection rates tend to be anecdotal or lack statistical rigor to guide new research and provide management guidelines ensuring sustainable harvest. Here I determine factors influencing conk formation at tree level by constructing a generalized linear mixed-effects model to predict host infection status, estimate infection rates in a variety of forest types and …

An Investigation Into Multi-View Error Correcting Output Code Classifiers Applied To Organ Tissue Classification, Daniel Alvarez Aug 2020

An Investigation Into Multi-View Error Correcting Output Code Classifiers Applied To Organ Tissue Classification, Daniel Alvarez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Large amounts of data is being generated constantly each day, so much data that it is difficult to find patterns in order to predict outcomes and make decisions for both humans and machines alike. It would be useful if this data could be simplified using machine learning techniques. For example, biological cell identity is dependent on many factors tied to genetic processes. Such factors include proteins, gene transcription, and gene methylation. Each of these factors are highly complex mechanism with immense amounts of data. Simplifying these can then be helpful in finding patterns in them. Error-Correcting Output Codes (ECOC) does …

Spectral Fingerprints Predict Functional Phenotypes Of A Native Shrub, Brecken Cherice Robb Aug 2020

Spectral Fingerprints Predict Functional Phenotypes Of A Native Shrub, Brecken Cherice Robb

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Landscapes are rapidly changing. To understand these changes and how they may influence coexisting herbivores, it is critical that we improve the ways in which we monitor changes in plant species, populations, and functional phenotypic traits over space and time. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is proving to be a valuable tool when it comes to this goal. NIRS is noninvasive and can provide high-resolution temporal information, including structural and chemical characteristics, on objects that are otherwise expansive, inaccessible, or imperceptible. We used the threatened sagebrush-steppe ecosystem, which spans over 43 million hectares of the Western United States, as a case …

Mxenes As Flow Electrodes For Capacitive Deionization Of Wastewater, Naqsh E. Mansoor Aug 2020

Mxenes As Flow Electrodes For Capacitive Deionization Of Wastewater, Naqsh E. Mansoor

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The energy-water nexus poses an integrated research challenge, while opening up an opportunity space for the development of energy efficient technologies for water remediation. Capacitive Deionization (CDI) is an upcoming reclamation technology that uses a small applied voltage applied across electrodes to electrophoretically remove dissolved ionic impurities from wastewater streams. Similar to a supercapacitor, the ions are stored in the electric double layer of the electrodes. Reversing the polarity of applied voltage enables recovery of the removed ionic impurities, allowing for recycling and reuse. Simultaneous materials recovery and water reclamation makes CDI energy efficient and resource conservative, with potential to …

Phenological Mismatch Is Correlated With Fitness Outcomes And Adaptive Behavior In A Generalist Avian Predator Distributed Across North America, Kathleen R. Callery Aug 2020

Phenological Mismatch Is Correlated With Fitness Outcomes And Adaptive Behavior In A Generalist Avian Predator Distributed Across North America, Kathleen R. Callery

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Climate-driven advances in the start of spring may result in a phenological mismatch between peak-prey abundance and the breeding season of secondary consumers. Phenological mismatch has been well-studied in insectivorous birds for which reproductive productivity is strongly linked to caterpillar abundance. The effects of mismatch on the productivity of dietary generalists, that forage on several types of prey, are less well-understood. Further, few studies have addressed questions about the effects of mismatch on survival, an important component of fitness that can be affected by breeding in sub-optimal conditions. We examined the relationship between phenological mismatch and fitness for a widespread …
