Idiopathic Gastroparesis: Lifestyle Modifications Versus Pharmacotherapy, Rebecca K. Schieffer
Idiopathic Gastroparesis: Lifestyle Modifications Versus Pharmacotherapy, Rebecca K. Schieffer
Theses and Graduate Projects
Idiopathic gastroparesis is a chronic symptomatic motility disorder of the stomach of unknown cause characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction, with the majority of gastroparesis cases being classified as idiopathic. Idiopathic gastroparesis continues to be a challenging diagnosis to manage and difficulty remains in treating associated symptoms that result in decreased quality of life. Current non-invasive recommendations for the treatment of idiopathic gastroparesis are lifestyle modifications, including dietary adjustments to follow a gastroparesis diet, and pharmacotherapy prescribed for symptomatic relief. Metoclopramide is currently the only medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in …

Joint attention, where a caregiver and an infant follow each other’s eye gaze plays an important role in the learning of language for new-born infants. To study joint attention, it is required to record and analyze the joint attention in a naturalistic environment. For this, we can use the head-mounted eye tracker. However, natural interaction involves the body movement which a?ects the accuracy of the measurement. In this work, I evaluated the accuracy of the eye-tracking system in the three di?erent scenarios: when the subject is sitting still in front of the target when the subject looks at the target …
In Situ Sensor Calibration Using Noise Consistency, Shriiesh Var Sharma
In Situ Sensor Calibration Using Noise Consistency, Shriiesh Var Sharma
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Robots rely on sensors to map their surroundings. As a result, the accuracy of the map depends heavily on the sensor noise and in particular on accurate knowledge of it. The common way to minimize the impact of sensor noise is to use filtering algorithms. Accuracy of these filtering algorithms (like the Kalman filter) relies on the accuracy of the user supplied measurement noise model. Inaccurate noise models lead to higher residual noise in state estimates and errors in the estimate of the precision of the state estimate. It is therefore important to have precise noise models and thus accurately …

Microchannel Technology In Cancer Cell Confined-Migration Study And Its Application In Drug Screening, Qionghua Shen
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
PDMS-based microchannel device has been explored to extend the basic platform for three-dimensional (3D) culture models of cell motility study because of its relevant stiffness and designable shape. Moreover, it is easy to add multi-functions (physical cures and biochemical cures) to one single device and provide a more physiologically relevant context to cells migrating inside channels. As recent cell motility studies have proved that cells show different migration strategies in physiologically confined three-dimensional (3D) space compared to a two-dimensional (2D) culture system. Besides, far from unique, when cancer cells are underling the migrating stage, they show increased resistance to chemo- …
In Vivo Ultrasound-Switchable Fluorescence Imaging And Its Applications, Tingfeng Yao
In Vivo Ultrasound-Switchable Fluorescence Imaging And Its Applications, Tingfeng Yao
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
The conventional fluorescence imaging has limited spatial resolution in centimeters-deep tissue because of the tissue’s high scattering property. Ultrasound-switchable fluorescence (USF) imaging, a new imaging technique, was recently proposed to realize high-resolution fluorescence imaging in centimeters-deep tissue. Although promising results were achieved in tissue-mimic phantoms or tissue samples, the in vivo USF imaging had not been realized so far. There were two major challenges in realizing in vivo USF imaging. First, the lack of stable near-infrared (NIR) USF contrast agents in a biological environment and the lack of data about their biodistributions. Second, the previous USF imaging systems adopted a …

Targeting The Oligomannose Biomarker Present On Distinct Subsets Of Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas, Butaek Lim
Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive
Subtypes of B cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, including follicular lymphomas, have shown a unique high oligomannose presentation on their immunoglobulins that will interact with natural receptors of the innate immunity, reportedly causing stimulation and proliferation. From next generation deep sequencing of the variable heavy and light chain sequences of follicular lymphoma involved tissue sections, we identified the consensus variable sequences possessing glycosylation sites at the complementarity determining region. Using this information, we developed a cell line, referred to here as BZ, which displays the consensus variable segments as part of a surface antibody (IgM) and confirmed its presentation of high oligomannose …

Sorption-Mediated Chemical Processes For The Versatile Treatment Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In Complex Media, Naomi Gevaerd De Souza
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In recent years, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have gained notoriety due to environmental and health concerns. These molecules are chemically stable which contributes to their persistence in biological systems and their increased detections in surface waters. Treatment of highly persistent PFAS has been a challenging but significant task. The most practical technique for removal of PFAS is through adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC) or other novel materials. Meanwhile, PFAS are resistant to simple oxidation, and although decomposition of specific PFAS has been reported through advanced oxidation technologies, often energy-intense technologies capable of generating electrons such as ultraviolet radiation, …

Predictive Insights For Improving The Resilience Of Global Food Security Using Artificial Intelligence, Meng Leong How, Yong Jiet Chan, Sin Mei Cheah
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Unabated pressures on food systems affect food security on a global scale. A human-centric artificial intelligence-based probabilistic approach is used in this paper to perform a unified analysis of data from the Global Food Security Index (GFSI). The significance of this intuitive probabilistic reasoning approach for predictive forecasting lies in its simplicity and user-friendliness to people who may not be trained in classical computer science or in software programming. In this approach, predictive modeling using a counterfactual probabilistic reasoning analysis of the GFSI dataset can be utilized to reveal the interplay and tensions between the variables that underlie food affordability, …
Patterns And Drivers In Counts Of Migratory Raptors At Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Usa, Patricia Kaye Tahura Dumandan
Patterns And Drivers In Counts Of Migratory Raptors At Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Usa, Patricia Kaye Tahura Dumandan
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the mechanisms driving biodiversity patterns amidst an era of global environmental change is the core of modern ecological research. The magnitude of biodiversity losses associated with anthropogenic activities has prompted resource managers and ecologists alike to identify strategies to address conservation issues. Broadly, two types of approaches are employed to answer ecological research questions: 1) single-species and 2) ecosystem-based approach. Single-species approaches are often useful to elucidate mechanisms driving population trajectories of individual species. On the other hand, ecosystem-based approaches can help in identifying general patterns that may be useful for multi-species management.
Here, I used both approaches in …
Towards Unifying Grounded And Distributional Semantics Using The Words-As-Classifiers Model Of Lexical Semantics, Stacy Black
Towards Unifying Grounded And Distributional Semantics Using The Words-As-Classifiers Model Of Lexical Semantics, Stacy Black
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Automated systems that make use of language, such as personal assistants, need some means of representing words such that 1) the representation is computable and 2) captures form and meaning. Recent advancements in the field of natural language processing have resulted in useful approaches to representing computable word meanings. In this thesis, I consider two such approaches: distributional embeddings and grounded models. Distributional embeddings are represented as high-dimensional vectors; words with similar meanings tend to cluster together in embedding space. Embeddings are easily learned using large amounts of text data. However, embeddings suffer from a lack of "real world" knowledge; …

Movements Of White-Headed And White-Backed Vultures, Teague K. Scott
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Vultures are the only obligate vertebrate scavengers, and as such provide crucial services as keystone species and support the health and function of ecosystems in which they live. African vultures are a diverse group, with nine species found throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, many with overlapping distributions. Unfortunately, African vultures are faced with numerous threats throughout their range that have led to significant population declines, some greater than 90%, in only three generations. Four of these species are currently listed as critically endangered, and three as endangered.
Despite the significant perils faced by African vultures, there are still significant knowledge gaps and, …

Dissertations
Americans have embraced craft beer, and the ensuing demand has resulted in an ever-increasing number of craft breweries opening over the past 20 years. Craft brewers are generally small employers and, as such, lack the resources necessary to address the safety and health of their employees adequately. Brewers face many safety and health hazards in their work environment. These hazards include exposures to carbon dioxide (CO2), workload demand, and MSD risk. It is essential to evaluate these hazards in craft breweries as they handle carbon dioxide (CO2) differently than large breweries by having the CO2 …

We conducted a survey to assess parasite control programs used by three groups of horse owners. The majority of those surveyed indicated that they received information on parasite control from veterinarians, with only 6% indicating reliance on Extension materials for such information. Most participants did not use fecal egg counts as part of their parasite control programs, and most were not aware of parasite resistance to anthelmintics. Our survey results highlight areas in which education for horse owners may be needed.

Attraction, Transport And Release Of Water Fleas’ Ephippia For Migration, Xiang Wang
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Planktonic crustaceans of the genus Daphnia live in aquatic environments. Although they are lack of walking and flying capabilities, they have developed adaptations that facilitate the dispersal of their dormant forms, ephippia to cross terrestrial barriers and reach neighborhood waterbodies. It increases the survival rate of their species. A possible way for this spread to occur is the transport of their ephippia through waterfowls’ legs. Yet, little is known about the key role of the legs in the dispersal and the main mechanisms. The ephippia first get attached to the waterfowls’ legs. The waterfowls may then carry these ephippia to …

The sympathetic nervous system dynamically regulates blood pressure (BP), primarily through the modification of peripheral vascular tone. Our lab has developed a methodology for quantifying resting sympathetic vascular transduction wherein bursts of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) act as a trigger and ensuing changes in BP and leg vascular conductance (LVC) are signal-averaged over the subsequent 15 cardiac cycles to produce characteristic (mean) responses. These previous investigations have focused on the effect of net sympathetic outflow (e.g, burst sequences and burst amplitudes) on the BP and LVC responses to spontaneous bursts of MSNA. The recent development of methods to identify …
