Murine Flexor Tendon Repair Model With Noninvasive Assessment Of Healing With Ultrasound, Fei Rost
Murine Flexor Tendon Repair Model With Noninvasive Assessment Of Healing With Ultrasound, Fei Rost
Theses
Flexor tendon injuries in the hands are relatively common, significantly disabling more than 100,000 people in the United States per year (Nichols 2019). The majority of flexor tendon injuries require surgical repair, but despite the advancement of technology and medicine, current treatments still yield poor outcomes. Even with prevailing treatments to improve or restore function to the affected digit(s), patients often suffer psychologically and financially in the long-term. A recent study gave a conservative estimate that flexor tendon lacerations cost the American healthcare system and taxpayers between US $240.8-409.1 million per year and emphasized the need to “focus our efforts …

Alcohol And Smoking Mediated Modulations In Adaptive Immunity In Pancreatitis, Rakesh Bhatia, Christopher Thompson, Koelina Ganguly, Shailender K. Singh, Surinder K. Batra, Sushil Kumar
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Pancreatitis is a condition of pancreatic inflammation driven by injury to the pancreatic parenchyma. The extent of acinar insult, intensity, and type of immune response determines the severity of the disease. Smoking, alcohol and autoimmune pancreatitis are some of the predominant risk factors that increase the risk of pancreatitis by differentially influencing the adaptive immune system. The overall decrease in peripheral lymphocyte (T-, B- and (natural killer T-) NKT-cell) count and increased infiltration into the damaged pancreatic tissue highlight the contribution of adaptive immunity in the disease pathology. Smoking and alcohol modulate the responsiveness and apoptosis of T- and B-cells …

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers
Drugs targeting heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) have been extensively explored for their anticancer potential in advanced clinical trials. Nanoformulations have been an important drug delivery platform for the anticancer molecules like Hsp90 inhibitors. It has been reported that bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles (NPs) serve as carriers for anticancer drugs, which have been extensively explored for their therapeutic efficacy against cancers. Luminespib (also known as NVP-AUY922) is a new generation Hsp90 inhibitor that was introduced recently. It is one of the most studied Hsp90 inhibitors for a variety of cancers in Phase I and II clinical trials and is …
Humanities Discourse In Games Classroom: Research Through Design With Games4impact, Sam Yang, Aslihan Tece Bayrak
Humanities Discourse In Games Classroom: Research Through Design With Games4impact, Sam Yang, Aslihan Tece Bayrak
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Game development education is commonly considered to focus on game production with branching areas of game design, game programming or game art; nonetheless, developing games include more than what these three disciplines—design, software development, art— bring to the table. Acknowledging the transdisciplinary nature of games, we present a classroom approach that explores the social, cultural and humanistic identity of games via research through design while also encouraging students to leverage the expressive power of games. The merit of this approach is using game making as a space to ignite inquiry on socio-cultural contexts and facilitate an exploration for complex topics …
Educating For Design Character In Higher Education: Challenges In Studio Pedagogy, Elizabeth Boling, Colin M. Gray, Kennon M. Smith
Educating For Design Character In Higher Education: Challenges In Studio Pedagogy, Elizabeth Boling, Colin M. Gray, Kennon M. Smith
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Some particular challenges in studio pedagogy arise from teaching for design character versus focusing solely on skills, knowledge or the cognitive processes of our students. In this paper, three authors with extensive combined experience in studio learning, teaching, and scholarship address these challenges via reflection on our own experiences of research and teaching and in-depth discussion with each other. We adopt a co/autoethnographic approach (Coia & Taylor, 2009), identifying a range of challenges we have faced ourselves across three established and emergent design disciplines. These challenges are grouped in relationship to students, to curriculum, to our colleagues, and to ourselves. …
Design Languages In The Design Space: Silicon Valley, Tarja Pääkkönen, Melanie Sarantou, Satu Miettinen
Design Languages In The Design Space: Silicon Valley, Tarja Pääkkönen, Melanie Sarantou, Satu Miettinen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This interdisciplinary article explores the nature of language in design managers´ strategic contexts. Taken-for-granted assumptions behind language influence the way cues are selected and elaborated on through actors´ frames to ultimately become meanings. Language suggests and passes on cues and frames through which strategizing evolves. The design space is depicted as an entanglement of in-betweens where actors are immersed in language and materiality in their ongoing sensemaking. The hermeneutic analysis revealed that design languages partly extend managerial concepts, thus broadening horizons. Designers´ sensemaking in this longitudinal research showed traits of normalising and denormalising language use balancing between frame adoption and …

Swipe, Scroll, Add-To-Cart: A Case Study Of E-Commerce Gallery Designs For Small Screen Devices, Nicholas Vanderschantz, Nicole Sijnja
DRS Biennial Conference Series
With significant increase in mobile online shopping the design of user experiences that promote purchaser decisions and increase sales is highly desirable to retailers and their marketing and digital production companies. Surprisingly little investigation into the usability of product galleries is available to guide the design of product listing pages for e-commerce websites, especially those websites viewed on small screen devices. Our research takes a synergistic view of the design and usability literature and provides a visually guided case study of e-commerce websites on mobile devices. We offer initial guidance to designers based on the insights from a heuristic analysis …
The Context And Experience Of Mobility Among Urban Marginalized Women In New Delhi, India, Krity Gera, Peter Hasdell
The Context And Experience Of Mobility Among Urban Marginalized Women In New Delhi, India, Krity Gera, Peter Hasdell
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Gender and mobility are two different yet complex themes that intersect to reveal the impact of the latter on practices related to gender. Indian women experience restriction on their movement because of social, cultural and economic issues. In such contexts, the informal modes of transport emerge as bottom-up solutions to fill in the voids left by public transportation system. Transportation is not just a means for geographical mobility but impacts social mobility of women resulting in enhancement of their overall quality of life. This research takes a descriptive approach to reveal the experience of mobility among urban marginalized women residing …
Putting The Trans* Into Design For Transition: Reflections On Gender, Technology And Natureculture, Sarah Elsie Baker
Putting The Trans* Into Design For Transition: Reflections On Gender, Technology And Natureculture, Sarah Elsie Baker
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Over the last five years, design for transition has emerged as a prominent critical paradigm in designing for sustainable futures. Transition design approaches are united in their aim of reorienting design practices to address global environmental catastrophe and societal inequality. Nevertheless, the discussion of gender and sexuality is notable for its absence. One exception is Arturo Escobar’s (2018) Designs for the Pluriverse. In this paper, I take Escobar’s discussion of gender as my starting point. I suggest that by utilising the concept of “Mother Earth” Escobar risks essentializing gender and biology and limiting the transformative potential of technology. I argue …
A Tarot Of Things: A Supernatural Approach To Designing For Iot, Haider Ali Akmal, Paul Coulton
A Tarot Of Things: A Supernatural Approach To Designing For Iot, Haider Ali Akmal, Paul Coulton
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper looks at an alternative approach to design research for IoT, through a practical engagement with philosophy; based on the concept of Carpentry, introduced by design philosopher Ian Bogost. It presents this exploration through the design of a bespoke digital Tarot deck, rooted in Object-Oriented Ontology. This branch of philosophical inquiry withdraws from conventional perceptions of objects and people. Viewing them as equally important ‘things’, operating with a range of independent and interdependent perspectives; which have been described as “constellations”. Through our philosophical carpentry we present a Tarot of Things, which acts as boundary object, for understanding how taking …
Open-Source Philosophy In Fashion Design: Contesting Authorship Conventions And Professionalism, Natalia Särmäkari, Annamari Vänskä
Open-Source Philosophy In Fashion Design: Contesting Authorship Conventions And Professionalism, Natalia Särmäkari, Annamari Vänskä
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper investigates open-source fashion approach as a design philosophy and a phenomenon that demonstrates an alternative to the concept of authorship of fashion designers. We argue that the concept contests traditional professionalism in fashion design in today’s digitalized, data-driven culture. Investigating open-source philosophy in fashion design as a dimension of professional fashion designers’ authorship, the paper presents three case studies with different ways of applying open-source principles to existing fashion design practices. The article builds on multiple-case-study research conducted during 2018–2019. The case studies were analyzed from the perspective of authorship and professionalism. We ask whether, how, why and …

Advanced technologies, including automation, Artificial Intelligence, ubiquitous computing, and smart products are influencing our everyday lives. Their complex nature brings new challenges and opportunities for all users, especially the older generations. This paper presents an ongoing PhD project that investigates the social context of older users (aged 50+) interacting with new emerging smart products using an emotional design theoretical perspective. The data is multimodal user research consisting of pre-interaction interviews, observation of first-time interactions, extended user experience of ten participants interacting with social robots in their home environments, and post-interaction interviews. In this paper, we present and discuss some of …
What’S It Like To Be Alexa? An Exploration Of Artificial Intelligence As A Material For Design., Franziska Louise Pilling, Paul Coulton
What’S It Like To Be Alexa? An Exploration Of Artificial Intelligence As A Material For Design., Franziska Louise Pilling, Paul Coulton
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Technology is a material, though we don’t often perceive it as something we can easily manipulate with sensuous knowledge. In particular, we don’t consider digital algorithms within Artificial-Intelligence (AI) as a material we can design with as we generally lack the intimate knowledge a carpenter has of the grain of wood and the chisel in hand. Despite this lack of understanding, designers are contributing to the rapid implementation of AI in diverse areas, having a profound effect on the lives of millions. If designers lack a material knowledge of AI, how are they to adequately consider the desirability of its …

Studying Material Interactions To Facilitate A Sense Of Being With The World, Bilge Merve Aktas, Camilla Groth
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Material interactions are fundamental to design and craft education; however, they might also provide opportunities to reflect on sustainable behaviour in general. In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary undergraduate course in which students interacted with clay and wool. By engaging novices in material-based craft processes, we examined renewed ways of experiencing the materials to reconsider our everyday material interactions and our dependency and responsibilities in regard to materials in general. Through this example, we discuss the potential of craft practice as an educational platform to discuss materiality and to facilitate a deeper and more holistic understanding of the consequences …
Product Standards As A Barrier To Innovation: The Case Of Jockey’S Safety Vests, Lisa Giusti Gestri, Carolyn Barnes
Product Standards As A Barrier To Innovation: The Case Of Jockey’S Safety Vests, Lisa Giusti Gestri, Carolyn Barnes
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Innovation is key to enhancing product performance and customer benefits, with designers having a core role in conceiving and actioning innovations in response to evolving conditions of use and customer needs. This paper discusses the scope for innovation in jockey’s safety vests in relation to the constraint of official product standards. The Australian standard for jockey’s safety vests, ARB 1.1998, has not been appreciably updated since the early 2000s despite a consistent rate of serious injuries to jockeys, grown in the number of females and the rise of smart wearable technologies in other sports and health. For this product category, …
Phantom Volume: A Spatial Explanation For Domestic Clutter, Heidi Ellis Overhill
Phantom Volume: A Spatial Explanation For Domestic Clutter, Heidi Ellis Overhill
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Philosophical assumptions influence empirical design. For example, physical shape is typically described in terms of ‘positive form and ‘negative space.’ Here, a third type of shape is proposed, called “phantom volume,” comprised of the geometrically-predictable forms delineated by movements of a product, its parts, accessories, the user’s body, and the cone of vision. Phantom volumes are critical to product function, because things cannot be used if access is blocked. This observation suggests that domestic “clutter” may be defined as the physical effect created when the phantom volume of one object is obstructed by the positive form of another — proposing …
Designing In Virtual Environments: The Integration Of Virtual Reality Tools Into Industrial Design Research And Education, Sarah Roberts, Rowan Page, Mark Richardson
Designing In Virtual Environments: The Integration Of Virtual Reality Tools Into Industrial Design Research And Education, Sarah Roberts, Rowan Page, Mark Richardson
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Virtual reality (VR) has become an increasingly common tool in consumer and professional settings. While there are many documented applications of industrial designers using VR in large corporations, there is limited literature detailing applications in studio-based education. This paper shares learnings from three case-studies across undergraduate, postgraduate, and design research projects. These projects share some of the possibilities and limitations of VR tools for future industrial design practitioners. The application of these tools spans across the product development process, from virtual 3D sketching and CAD modelling, visualization, usability testing to co-design workshops with members of the public. VR has moved …
Over The Rainbow: Sharing A Cross-Disciplinary Philosophy Of Waste Through Spectrum Visualisation, Manuela Taboada, Alice Payne
Over The Rainbow: Sharing A Cross-Disciplinary Philosophy Of Waste Through Spectrum Visualisation, Manuela Taboada, Alice Payne
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Waste is a material problem and a cultural condition. Many philosophies and visualisation resources exist for addressing waste such as waste hierarchies and circular economy diagrams. These diagrams, however, are not always enough to represent the intrinsic complexities related to waste systems or the interactions that exist between current and potential interventions. In this paper we contribute an original framework for understanding waste and propose a visualisation of waste as a spectrum of possibilities rather than as a series of discrete, disconnected interventions. The Waste Rainbow invites users to “plot” interventions and to think about these interventions and their relationships …

Understanding Interactivity For The Strength-Training Needs Of The Elderly At Nursing Homes In Indonesia, Elizabeth Wianto, Chien-Hsu Chen, Irma Ruslina Defi, Erwani Merry Sartika, Aan Darmawan Hangkawidjaja, Yang-Cheng Lin
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Regular exercise has been shown to be beneficial for the elderly. However, the prevalence of the elderly doing exercise is low, and muscle-strengthening exercise is even lower. Therefore, physical inactivity has been reported as a significant health problem worldwide. Many assistive devices have been developed to overcome the problems of lack of engagement. This study explores opinions from the elderly regarding an acceptable and affordable technology-based design that focuses on the strength training specific to the elderly in two middle-class nursing homes in Indonesia. This paper presents qualitative findings from 37 participants who are part of an ongoing study. The …
Optimizing Sources Of Inspiration For Innovation: A Case Study In Concept Generation Process, Jeff Feng
Optimizing Sources Of Inspiration For Innovation: A Case Study In Concept Generation Process, Jeff Feng
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The conceptual distance between the inspiration source and the design subject affects the performance of idea generation. Despite many studies about the significance of distant or near sources of inspiration to boost design creativity, which source of inspiration plays a greater role remains unclear. This paper explores the benefit of incorporating both distant and near sources of inspiration in concept generation in a design studio context. An idea-generation process is implemented in a third-year industrial design studio for three years. The project outcome indicates a potential advantage in guiding students to collect and organize diverse inspirational sources to improve their …
Materialising Weaving: Embedding A Narrative Of Construction Time Within Experimental Woven Textiles, Jessica Lynne Priemus
Materialising Weaving: Embedding A Narrative Of Construction Time Within Experimental Woven Textiles, Jessica Lynne Priemus
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper responds to the theme of processes, and poses the question: what methods and tools of design could be utilised in order to connect the user to textile making processes, in particular, the time involved in hand weaving? I share insights that I have gained from my own creative practice and postgraduate research, and draw on diverse literature including the work of Bauhaus designer and weaver Anni Albers. I reflect on how by attempting to aesthetically capture my own processes in cloth, the weaving act is revealed as a sometimes-flawed marker of time. The potential outcome of this research …

Emphasis is placed on different sensory …
Graphic Design Studies: What Can It Be? Following In Victor Margolin’S Footsteps For Possible Answers, Robert George Harland
Graphic Design Studies: What Can It Be? Following In Victor Margolin’S Footsteps For Possible Answers, Robert George Harland
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Graphic design studies is proposed as a new way to differentiate practice in graphic design from reflection on that practice. Previous attempts to link design studies and graphic design have fallen short of arguing for graphic design studies, and consequently has not been explicit about how graphic design studies may contribute to better understanding the nature of graphic design practice. This has not been helped by the abstruse nomenclature that confuses graphic design’s relationship to and distinction from other visual practices. Victor Margolin called this ‘narrative problems.’ This paper explores the potential to differentiate graphic design practice from graphic design …
Design Science Approach To Nature Inspired Product Forms: Studies On Processes And Products, Shiv Kumar Verma, Ravi Mokashi Punekar
Design Science Approach To Nature Inspired Product Forms: Studies On Processes And Products, Shiv Kumar Verma, Ravi Mokashi Punekar
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper follows a design science approach to inquire into the act of creation of nature-inspired product forms. Structured on Nigel Cross taxonomy, it considers three aspects for design research: Processes, Products, and People. In this paper, we discuss two aspects of the framework examining Processes & Methods by undertaking a comparative study of methods in the published literature on the generation of product forms inspired by nature. The second aspect, the study of Products is a qualitative study of visual elements of product form inspired by nature. The paper explores the possibilities of developing i) systematic design research and …

A Theoretical Model Of Similarity Judgment Based On Ideas Of Form And Spirit, Yifeng Wen, Ding-Bang Luh, Chi-Hua Wu
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Similarity is demonstrably important across many areas of cognition. At present, the main idea is that the similarity of a pair of objects increase with its commonalities and decrease with its difference. However, it’s difficult to reasonably explain some counterintuitive situations that often occur. For example, people might find that someone looks similar with a dog, even though most shared features are dissimilar. Inspired by the ideas of form and spirit, we speculate that some key features of objects may have a greater impact on similarity judgment than the others. Therefore, this paper proposed a theoretical model of similarity judgment …

Signaling lipid mediators released from 5 lipoxygenase (5LO) pathways influence both bone and muscle cells, interfering in their proliferation and differentiation capacities. A major limitation to studying inflammatory signaling pathways in bone and muscle healing is the inadequacy of available animal models. We developed a surgical injury model in the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle and femur in 129/SvEv littermates mice to study simultaneous musculoskeletal (MSK) healing in male and female, young (3 months) and aged (18 months) WT mice compared to mice lacking 5LO (5LOKO). MSK defects were surgically created using a 1-mm punch device in the VA muscle followed …
