Accountable Witchcraft: A Story-Theory Account Of The Witch As A Site Of Disruption For Whiteness And Colonialism, Alex Rae Hillen

Theses - ALL

In this thesis, I seek to wed my experiences of activism, scholarship, and Pagan witchcraft community together through storied theory, in order to give an honest account of my own transformation through both scholarship and community action. I do this for many reasons. Because I want to honor the Queer interracial organizing community who saw me, built me up, opened my eyes and inspired in me an ethic of accountability and critical analysis of the world around me. Because I want to heed the call of scholars like Lisa Flores, Langford and Speight, Nakayama and Krizek to engage in reflexive …

Theses - ALL

Għana (pronounced A-na) is a rhyming conversational music form created on the island country of Malta, a country situated between southern Italy and Northern Africa. Hip-Hop was birthed in black and Latino urban communities in New York, where street cultures were isolated from white neighborhoods. Hip-Hop has had an overwhelming influence on the Black American community, as well as the entire U.S. society. Over the past three decades, Hip-Hop has influenced and uplifted the world by speaking up for generations and providing the voice for a group of people trying to deliver a message. This thesis explores how artists on …

Untitled, Eric Mowen

Theses - ALL

This thesis is a product of my attempt to discover why I make art. The intent is not to define a specific work or body of work, but rather to explore the personal context that informs my decision-making process. The writing style and tone are as much a reflection of my artistic inclinations as are the actual topics I have chosen to address. Much of this thesis is not serious, because much of the time I am not a serious person. A portion of this thesis is quite serious, and I hereby formally apologize for that fact.

Yours Truly: And Other Ways Of Saying I'M Still Here Under The Rubble Of This Exploded Building, Stephen James Farrell

Theses - ALL

In my digital painting, Mount Culling, 2019, a mound of objects sits on a pile of white rocks that protrudes from a watery plane. The surface of the plane stretches back to the horizon. The head of a bull in the center, a broken-down van with its rear end ripped off sits as if crashed on the rocks. A man’s head, eyes closed in restful repose is large and sculpture like, making the other objects seem like toys. The head is an industrial hue of orange-yellow on the edge of the rocks half sunk into a black and oil slick, …

Cell-Adhesion Activities Responding To Nano-Dynamic Substrate, Huaiyu Shi Aug 2020

Cell-Adhesion Activities Responding To Nano-Dynamic Substrate, Huaiyu Shi

Theses - ALL

Focal adhesions are the large molecular complexes that anchor cells to the ECM, which is involved in cell spreading, migration, and proliferation. In our previous work, the study of cardiomyocyte morphological changes and myofibril remodeling, responding to the dynamic nano-topographic substrate, have been accomplished. The results showed focal adhesion experienced disassembly and reassembly in the first 12 hours. In this study, the hiPSC-CMs were seeded on the SMP substrates with the flat-to-wrinkle dynamic surface. Paxillin, vinculin, and zyxin from different layers of focal adhesive architectures were co-stained with F-actin. The fluorescent images were analyzed to investigate the details of focal …

Earth’S Oceanic Oxygen History From Phanerozoic To Pleistocene Glacial Cycles: Insights From The Carbonate Iodine-To-Calcium Proxy, Wanyi Lu

Dissertations - ALL

Oxygen in the oceans is an important part of the significant and complex evolution of Earth’s climate, with great significance for the evolution of life in the oceans. My PhD research has been primarily driven by three major questions: (1) How can we reliably reconstruct oxygen levels in ancient oceans? (2) How did oceanic oxygen levels evolve throughout Earth’s history? (3) How did oceanic oxygen levels affect habitability of the Earth? Most studies of the Earth’s oxygen history have focused on the atmosphere and deep oceans, but in contrast, I focused on the upper ocean (the top tens to a …

Using A Token System To Increase Compliance And Avoid Satiation During Reinforcer Preference Assessments, Samantha Sallade Aug 2020

Using A Token System To Increase Compliance And Avoid Satiation During Reinforcer Preference Assessments, Samantha Sallade

Dissertations - ALL

Preference assessments are commonly administered to identify potential reinforcers for use in behavioral interventions. This study examined the effectiveness of a token intervention for increasing compliance during paired-stimulus preference assessments. Three male preschool children with hypothesized tangible-motivated problem behavior participated. For Experiment 1, an ABAB reversal design was used to evaluate the effects of tokens on students’ compliance and problem behaviors. Experiment 2 used a concurrent-operants design to compare children’s choice of concurrent VI-15s schedules of token delivery and exchange at the end of each session versus immediate access to a highly-preferred item. Results demonstrated that two of the three …

Fluidization And Segregation In Confluent Models For Biological Tissues, Preeti Sahu Aug 2020

Fluidization And Segregation In Confluent Models For Biological Tissues, Preeti Sahu

Dissertations - ALL

Collective tissue dynamics, more specifically a tissue's ability to fluidize and segregate, is imperative for proper embryonic development and normal physiological functioning. In this thesis, I use vertex models to understand how cell-scale properties govern large-scale collective behavior. I begin with the process of fluidization in ordered monolayers. By perturbing beyond the linear regime, I show that in confluent tissues the linear response does not correctly predict the non-linear behavior, which, in this case, is the ability to exchange neighbors and fluidize. We also construct a simple analytic ansatz that can predict the non-linear behaviour responsible for cellular motion in …

Spectroscopy Versus Turbidity: Non-Invasive In Vivo Monitoring Of Living Systems, Seth Fillioe Aug 2020

Spectroscopy Versus Turbidity: Non-Invasive In Vivo Monitoring Of Living Systems, Seth Fillioe

Book Review: Reconnecting To The Source By Ervin Laszlo, Elizabeth W. Szatmari Krasnoff Aug 2020

Book Review: Reconnecting To The Source By Ervin Laszlo, Elizabeth W. Szatmari Krasnoff

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Quantum philosopher Ervin Laszlo has taken one step further outside of the contemporary mainstream scientific view, which believes in a reductive “scientific” method primarily of highly controlled experiments to determine truth. In this visionary work, Laszlo proposes that the true laws of nature can also be accessed and felt experientially. Here he argues that the new quantum science can support this view, and even assist us as we heal the rift between mind and spirit and reconnect to our source. Laszlo proposes a new paradigm, a holotropic worldview with love as the core attracting force of wholeness. Indeed, as the …

Book Review: The Intelligence Of The Cosmos: Why Are We Here? By Ervin Laszlo, Elizabeth W. Szatmari Krasnoff Aug 2020

Book Review: The Intelligence Of The Cosmos: Why Are We Here? By Ervin Laszlo, Elizabeth W. Szatmari Krasnoff

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Ervin Laszlo breaks down his theory of everything into a credo of 8 statements. This review looks in some detail at Laszlo’s theories and also touches on the other writers who have been invited to participate. It is noteworthy that Laszlo breaks with the current scientific belief that we are without purpose, and that evolution has no purpose. He believes that compassion, love, and expansion are our purposes for being here.

Effects Of Differential Reinforcer Magnitude For An Alternative Response On The Resurgence Of Academic Responding, Emily Lynn Baxter Aug 2020

Effects Of Differential Reinforcer Magnitude For An Alternative Response On The Resurgence Of Academic Responding, Emily Lynn Baxter

Dissertations - ALL

Several studies have looked at ways to mitigate resurgence of challenging behavior by manipulating dimensions of reinforcement for an alternative behavior. To date, only one study has examined differences in resurgence following different magnitudes of reinforcement for an alternative behavior, and only one study has addressed resurgence in an academic setting. The current study evaluated the magnitude of resurgence of a target academic response when large- or small-magnitude reinforcement for an alternative behavior was provided and then all responses were placed on extinction in a subsequent phase. Four students, not receiving academic or behavioral services, were recruited from a suburban …

Structural And Functional Insights Into Ghrelin Acylation By Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase, Maria Campana Aug 2020

Structural And Functional Insights Into Ghrelin Acylation By Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase, Maria Campana

Dissertations - ALL

Ghrelin is a peptide hormone primarily secreted by the stomach that acts as the endogenous ligand for the GHSR1a G-protein-coupled receptor. This 28 amino acid peptide stimulates appetite and has been associated with the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neuroendocrine, and immune systems. Ghrelin requires a unique posttranslational modification to be biological active. Ghrelin O-acyltransferase (GOAT) is responsible for catalyzing octanoylation of the 3rd serine side chain of ghrelin to generate the active form of this hormone. Thus, GOAT is considered as a potential therapeutic target for treatment of obesity and other disorders linked to the peptide. Yet, the active site architecture and …

Investigating The Relationships Between Disorder, Structure, And Dynamics In Amorphous Systems, Ethan Stanifer Aug 2020

Investigating The Relationships Between Disorder, Structure, And Dynamics In Amorphous Systems, Ethan Stanifer

Dissertations - ALL

In this thesis, we investigate the relationships between the disorder, structure, and deformation in amorphous materials. First, to understand the surprising low-frequency vibrational modes in structural glasses, and how it arises from the microscopic disorder in the system, we study the spectra of a large ensemble of sparse random matrices where disorder is controlled by the distribution of bond weights and network coordination. When there is a finite probability density of infinitesimal bond weights, we find a region in the vibrational density of states that is consistent with the low-frequency behavior in structural glasses. Next, in order to investigate structural …

Being In Transit: Life, Death, And The Politics Of Migrant Journeys From Central America To The United States, Jared Patrick Van Ramshorst

Dissertations - ALL

Every year, hundreds of thousands of migrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua risk their lives traveling to and toward the U.S. Long before reaching the U.S.-Mexico border, however, they travel thousands of miles across Central America and Mexico, often stopping off in migrant shelters scattered along the way. Whether travelling by foot or riding atop large freight trains known as “the Beast,” migrants spend weeks, months, and even years in transit, navigating a dense landscape of hardening borders and immigration enforcement in Mexico and the U.S. while encountering incredible dangers along the way, such as assault, extortion, kidnapping, …

Kinetics Of Methyl Ketone And Levulinic Acid Oxidative Scission Over Supported Vanadium Oxide Catalysts, Ran Zhu Aug 2020

Kinetics Of Methyl Ketone And Levulinic Acid Oxidative Scission Over Supported Vanadium Oxide Catalysts, Ran Zhu

Dissertations - ALL

Levulinic acid (LA) is a platform chemical derived from lignocellulosic biomass. Among the various applications LA has in industrial commodities and specialty chemicals, we previously reported a novel pathway that converts LA to maleic anhydride (MA) in high yields through methyl a-carbon oxidative scission over supported vanadium oxide catalysts. However, the high selectivity of methyl scission during LA oxidation appears to be unexpected according to the trends observed during the analogous oxidative scission of methyl ketones (e.g., 2-butanone and 2-pentanone). The impacts of vanadium oxide structures, metal oxide substrates, and methyl ketone molecular structures on both selectivity and reactivity of …
