Urbanization Impacts On Campus Cypress Domes, Jennifer Bennett, Ashley Boggs, Nathan Colonna, Angela Ferebee, Bruno Kallas Aug 2020

Urbanization Impacts On Campus Cypress Domes, Jennifer Bennett, Ashley Boggs, Nathan Colonna, Angela Ferebee, Bruno Kallas

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Cypress domes are terrestrial freshwater ecosystems characterized by the presence of cypress trees (Taxodium spp.) growing in well-defined, dome-shaped clusters throughout the southeastern United States. These systems are one of many ecosystems in Florida facing increasing threats from human expansion and urbanization including fire suppression, logging, and hydrological alterations. This study sought to examine the impacts of urbanization on three cypress domes located on the University of Central Florida Orlando campus. To do this, we measured the defining traits, dendrochronology of Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium, and soil characteristics in each of the three selected domes. The cypress …

Essential Work, Education, And Human Values, Rachel Robinson-Greene Aug 2020

Essential Work, Education, And Human Values, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

On August 21st, the White House released guidance that designated teachers as “essential workers.” One of the things that this means is that teachers can return to work even if they know they’ve been exposed to the virus, provided that they remain asymptomatic. This is not the first time that the Trump administration has declared certain workers or, more accurately, certain work to be essential. Early in the pandemic, as the country experienced decline in the availability of meat, President Trump issued an executive order proclaiming that slaughterhouses were essential businesses. The result was that they did not have to …

Estimating Global Injuries Morbidity And Mortality: Methods And Data Used In The Global Burden Of Disease 2017 Study, Spencer L. James, Veincent Christian F. Pepito, 536 Co-Authors Aug 2020

Estimating Global Injuries Morbidity And Mortality: Methods And Data Used In The Global Burden Of Disease 2017 Study, Spencer L. James, Veincent Christian F. Pepito, 536 Co-Authors

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Background While there is a long history of measuring death and disability from injuries, modern research methods must account for the wide spectrum of disability that can occur in an injury, and must provide estimates with sufficient demographic, geographical and temporal detail to be useful for policy makers. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 study used methods to provide highly detailed estimates of global injury burden that meet these criteria.

Methods In this study, we report and discuss the methods used in GBD 2017 for injury morbidity and mortality burden estimation. In summary, these methods included estimating cause-specific mortality …

Dietary Behaviours Among Han, Tujia And Miao Primary School Students: A Cross-Sectional Survey In Chongqing, China, Zhengjie Cai, Jinli Xian, Xianglong Xu, Ziwei Zhang, Camila Araujo, Manoj Sharma, Yong Zhao Aug 2020

Dietary Behaviours Among Han, Tujia And Miao Primary School Students: A Cross-Sectional Survey In Chongqing, China, Zhengjie Cai, Jinli Xian, Xianglong Xu, Ziwei Zhang, Camila Araujo, Manoj Sharma, Yong Zhao

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Background and Purpose: Exploring the differences of children’s dietary behaviours from different nationalities could provide a reference for targeted nutritional interventions. This study aims to assess the dietary behaviours among Han, Tujia and Miao primary school students and the differences among the ethnic groups. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional survey included 556 primary school students (249 Han, 76 Tujia and 231 Miao students) aged 6– 13 years from the representative minority areas of Chongqing, China. Data were collected with a self-administered or one-on-one interview-based questionnaire encompassing questions on sociodemographics, eating habits and dietary intake. Eating habits and dietary intake were …

The Effects Of Radical Containing Combustion Derived Particulate Matter In Adult Mouse Respiratory System, Jeffrey Harding Aug 2020

The Effects Of Radical Containing Combustion Derived Particulate Matter In Adult Mouse Respiratory System, Jeffrey Harding

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Epidemiological data associates high levels of combustion-derived particulate matter (PM) with deleterious respiratory outcomes, but the mechanism underlying those outcomes remains elusive. It has been acknowledged by the World Health Organization that PM exposure contributes to more than 4.2 million all-cause mortalities worldwide each year. Current literature demonstrates that PM exacerbates respiratory diseases, impairs lung function, results in chronic respiratory illnesses, and is associated with increased mortality. The proposed mechanisms revolve around oxidative stress and inflammation promoting pulmonary physiological remodeling. Our data demonstrate that environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) stabilized on the surface of PM are capable of inducing oxidative …

Taxonomic Revision Of The Afrotropical Agabus Raffrayi Species Group With The Description Of Four New Species (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae), William F. Englund, Laban Njoroge, Olof Biström, Kelly B. Miller, David T. Bilton, Johannes Bergsten Aug 2020

Taxonomic Revision Of The Afrotropical Agabus Raffrayi Species Group With The Description Of Four New Species (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae), William F. Englund, Laban Njoroge, Olof Biström, Kelly B. Miller, David T. Bilton, Johannes Bergsten

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

We revise the Afrotropical Agabus raffrayi species group, motivated by the discovery of new diversity in Kenya and South Africa. Whilst Agabus is mainly a holarctic genus, the Agabus raffrayi group is restricted to high altitude regions of eastern Africa and temperate parts of South Africa, from where we describe the southernmost Agabus in the world. The following new species are introduced: Agabus anguluverpus sp. nov. from Mount Kenya in central Kenya, Agabus austellus sp. nov. a widespread species in South Africa, Agabus riberae sp. nov. from the Kamiesberg and northeastern Cederberg ranges in the Northern and Western Cape Provinces …

A Multimedia Approach To Improving Retention In Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Peperone Aug 2020

A Multimedia Approach To Improving Retention In Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Peperone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This research compared differences in grades among students who utilized an adaptive instructional system (AIS) to study for their undergraduate anatomy and physiology exams. The AIS implemented multimedia techniques by combining machine-generated cloze questions with images drawn from the A&P textbook, specifically chapters 9 (musculature) and 10 (nervous system). The AIS adapted to the performance of each student and optimally chose which question they should see next. Participants studied using this AIS before the exam and were given extra credit for participation. I hypothesized that students who practiced using the AIS will perform better on their exams than those that …
