Compressed Dna Representation For Efficient Amr Classification, John Partee, Robert Hazell, Anjli Solsi, John Santerre Aug 2020

Compressed Dna Representation For Efficient Amr Classification, John Partee, Robert Hazell, Anjli Solsi, John Santerre

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we explore a representation methodology for the compression of DNA isolates. Using lossless string compression via tokenization of frequently repeated segments of DNA, we reduce the length of the isolates to be counted as k-mers for classification. With this new representation, we apply a previously established feature sampling method to dramatically reduce the feature space. In understanding the genetic diversity, we also look at conserving biological function across these spaces. Using a random forest model we were able to predict the resistance or susceptibility of bacteria with 85-90\% accuracy, with a 30-50\% reduction in overall isolate length, …

The increasing concern for food safety has created a need to evaluate novel techniques to eliminate or control pathogens, resulting in safe food. In this study, four bacteriophages of bovine origin, specific to E. coli O157:H7, were successfully isolated and characterized. A microplate reader assay demonstrated the efficacy of the bacteriophage (phage) cocktail against E. coli O157:H7 resulting in a significant reduction (p < 0.01) in the target pathogen population. The phage cocktail demonstrated significant efficacy (p < 0.05) against E. coli O157:H7 in the presence of the most utilized sanitizers in the United States, namely 100 parts per million (ppm) free chlorine and 100-ppm peroxyacetic acid. Survival in the sanitizer concentrations demonstrates the potential …

An Approach To Neutrosophic Dialogue And A Response To Wef's Great Reset: How Dialogue Is Required In Order To Preserve Social Justice With Anger Management, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In recent debates, there are arguments on the role of anger in order to preserve social justice. For instance, in open democracy net, there is promoted phrase: "anger is the language of social justice." Others call for anger fueled with love (Sisonke Msimangs). Is that true? Is it achievable, the so-called "anger with love?"

Detection Of Melamine Based On The Suppressed Anodic Response Of Uric Acid By A Au-Ag Nanoparticles Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode, Yu-Hui Peng, Tsunghsueh Wu, Yang-Wei Lin

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

We demonstrated a sensitive electrochemical method for the determination of non-electroactive melamine (Mel) using a modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE), with uric acid (UA) as the signal reporter. To increase the anodic response of UA, GCE was coated with Au–Ag nanoparticles and a Nafion thin film (Au–Ag/Nafion/GCE). The sensing mechanism was based on the competitive adsorption behavior of Mel on the Au–Ag/Nafion/GCE, which reduces the electroactive surface area of nanoparticles and thus hinders anodic response of UA. Under optimal conditions and the use of an analytical method of differential pulse voltammetry, this modified electrode detected Mel concentrations ranging from 2.5 …

The Effects Of Adolescent Chronic Mild Stress: In Female Wistar-Kyoto Rats, Anna Hallowell Aug 2020

The Effects Of Adolescent Chronic Mild Stress: In Female Wistar-Kyoto Rats, Anna Hallowell

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Despite years of research to understand under-lying mechanisms and develop more effective treatment approaches for mood disorders, numerous challenges exist. Many chronic stress models are used to study mood disorders, how-ever the majority have been established with adult males. This is problematic considering that affective disorders are more common in women, and generally develop during late adolescence. Studies have indicated fundamental behavioral, physiological, and neural differences between males and females in response to the same external stressors, furthering a need to develop sex-specific paradigms to accurately model the etiology of mood disorders in females. The Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rat strain is …

In Search Of Homes: Climate Refugees Meet Walls, Afrikaan Osman

Alfie Scholars Conferences

The United Nations (UN) projects 200 million climate refugees (people displaced by climate change) by the year 2050, which is about 200 times more than the Syrian refugee crisis back in 2011 (UNHCR). All those people will lose their homes and wander around in search of new homes; some of them will become internally displaced people, and others will try to cross borders only to meet walls. The average person lives 17 years in a refugee camp before they relocate to a third country and get resettled. Refugee camps are some of the most populated and overcrowded places in the …

The Migration Of Medical Professionals From Dictatorships To The United States Of America: Why America Resists To Benefit From The Brain Drain, Viktoria Buina Aug 2020

The Migration Of Medical Professionals From Dictatorships To The United States Of America: Why America Resists To Benefit From The Brain Drain, Viktoria Buina

Alfie Scholars Conferences

In the United States, the Migration Policy Institute reported 263,000 immigrants have degrees in health-related fields yet do not hold the positions in the healthcare system due to existing rigid licensing regulations. Despite the growing shortage of doctors which estimates to reach the levels between 54,100 and 139,000 physicians by 2033, these regulations still create an unnecessary timely and costly barrier for already experienced physicians. In the light of the Global COVID-19 pandemic, a number of possible solutions to ease the licensing process came out of the shadow. The main goal of this presentation is to explore the reasoning for …

Early Thoracentesis And Follow-Up In Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients, Jessica Kohler Aug 2020

Early Thoracentesis And Follow-Up In Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients, Jessica Kohler

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery is a high-risk surgical intervention and commonly accounts for hospital readmissions within 30 days of discharge. Pleural effusions that require therapeutic thoracentesis are a reason for many of the readmissions. Studies have examined the adverse clinical effects that large volume pleural effusions have in these patients. However, effusion volume itself may have little influence on patient outcomes. Complications occur without close monitoring and drainage. In this study, we propose a randomized controlled trial to determine whether frequent follow-up and drainage of pleural effusions ≥320 ml can improve the need for rehospitalization and influence 6-minute walk …

Vampire Bats: Preparing For Range Expansion Into The U.S., Michael J. Bodenchuk, David L. Bergman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The common vampire bat apparently is expanding its range northwards in Mexico and seems poised to enter the southern United States. Climate models predict suitable habitat in the U.S. in south Texas and parts of southern Arizona. While vampire bats’ northward range expansion is not unexpected, the fact that this species brings a strain of rabies that impacts livestock and people warrants a strategic response. Annual economic damages from bats are estimated between $7M and $9M, largely associated with deaths of livestock from rabies. To prepare for the emerging rabies issue, USDA Wildlife Services programs in Texas and Arizona have …
