Preclinical Studies On Intranasal Npy And Selective Npy Receptor Agonists In Rodent Ptsd Model: Focus On Locus Coeruleus Noradrenergic System, Chiso Nwokafor

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychological disorder that develops in a subset of individuals after exposure to a traumatic stress. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) an endogenous 36 amino acid neuropeptide expressed in many areas of the brain and periphery especially those involved in stress may confer resilience to the harmful effect of stress. We demonstrated changes in the Single Prolonged Stress (SPS) PTSD model and potential for their modulation by delivery of intranasal NPY to the brain. There was a progressive worsening of anxiety symptoms at two weeks compared to one week after SPS. Previously we showed that 150µg …

A Novel Mucosal Vaccine Platform For Immunization Against Plague, Christina D'Arco

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, has killed millions throughout human history. Today, it remains a significant threat for use as a bioweapon. Naturally occurring antibiotic resistance has been observed in Y. pestis isolates, and resistant strains have been engineered for use in biological warfare. Vaccines remain our best means of protection against plague, as well as countless other global contagions. We have developed a vaccine consisting of two Y. pestis virulence proteins, LcrV (V) and F1, conjugated to Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV), a safe, non-replicating plant virus that can be administered mucosally, providing complete protection against pneumonic plague, …

Exploring The Relationship Between Children’S Vocabulary And Their Understanding Of Cardinality: A Methodological Approach, Justin Slifer, Emily Carrigan, Kristin Walker, Marie Coppola

Honors Scholar Theses

Is there a relationship between vocabulary and children’s understanding of cardinality? Does the way in which we classify cardinality data as tested by the Give-a-Number task affect finding such a relationship? This thesis explored these questions using a methodological approach, by testing the relationship between children’s receptive vocabulary scores and Give-a-Number scores classified in two different ways, the traditional knower-level assessment, as well as by calculating the proportion of trials answered correctly. A significant correlation was found between participants’ receptive vocabulary scores and Give-a-Number scores using both manners of classification, independent of the children’s ages. The results were compared with …

Western North American Naturalist

Predation affects the demography and population dynamics of prey species. Because predators commonly stalk prey from concealed routes, attack quickly, and frequently avoid areas with human observers, documenting predation under natural conditions is often difficult. An adult female American badger (Taxidea taxus) with offspring moved into a colony of Gunnison’s prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni) living under natural conditions at Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico, United States, and provided an excellent opportunity to record predations over a period of 33 consecutive days in June–July 2018. Badgers are commonly nocturnal, but the badger at our study …

Membrane-Based Removal Of Ammonia From A Waste Stream And Its Recovery, Philip A. Aligwe Aug 2020

Membrane-Based Removal Of Ammonia From A Waste Stream And Its Recovery, Philip A. Aligwe

Dissertations

At neutral pH levels, ammonia in aqueous streams exists in two forms: ammonium ion (NH4+) and dissolved ammonia gas molecules (NH3). Membrane separation serves as a viable option for treatment of ammonia containing effluents. This can be achieved via by stripping NH3 from an ammonia feed solution at feed solution pH > 11 via hollow fiber supported gas membrane (SGM) or removing NH4+ from an ammonia feed solution at feed solution pH < 7 via liquid or polymeric membranes.

The first study reported here examines the influence of feed volumetric flow rates on outlet NH3 concentrations in parallel flow …

Identifying Fox Squirrels And Their Damage In Your Yard, S. Nicole Frey, Jessica Tegt Aug 2020

Identifying Fox Squirrels And Their Damage In Your Yard, S. Nicole Frey, Jessica Tegt

All Current Publications

Native to the eastern United States, fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) were first documented in Utah in 2011. It is unknown how fox squirrels made their way into Utah; however, it is possible they followed riparian corridors (areas along rivers, where trees often grow) through Colorado into Utah and were only detected once their populations grew in number. Since the Utah Natural Heritage Program began tracking them, there have been over 500 observations of this species, predominantly around Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Front. Fox squirrels are the largest tree squirrel in the U.S. (17–28 inches, and 17.5–37.5 ounces). This …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

In this study, effects of capsaicin, an active ingredient of the capsicum plant, were investigated on human 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptors. Capsaicin reversibly inhibited serotonin (5-HT)-induced currents recorded by two-electrode voltage clamp method in Xenopus oocytes. The inhibition was time- and concentration-dependent with an IC50 = 62 μM. The effect of capsaicin was not altered in the presence of capsazepine, and by intracellular BAPTA injections or trans-membrane potential changes. In radio-ligand binding studies, capsaicin did not change the specific binding of the 5-HT3 antagonist [3H]GR65630, indicating that it is a noncompetitive inhibitor of …

Novel Perspectives On Due Process Symposium: Do Foreign Nations Have Constitutional Rights?, Robert J. Pushaw Jr. Aug 2020

Novel Perspectives On Due Process Symposium: Do Foreign Nations Have Constitutional Rights?, Robert J. Pushaw Jr.

Fordham Law Review Online

Clarity would be promoted by treating Article III—which primarily concerns subject matter jurisdiction over three categories of “Cases” and six types of “Controversies”— separately from Due Process issues such as personal jurisdiction. Moreover, Article III’s text and history indicate that its drafters included “Controversies . . . between a State, or the Citizens thereof, and foreign States, Citizens or Subjects” to ensure that such disputes would be resolved impartially by federal judges who, unlike their state counterparts, enjoyed tenure and salary guarantees that insulated them from political pressure.

Novel Perspectives On Due Process Symposium: Punishment Without Process: “Victim Impact” Proceedings For Dead Defendants, Bruce A. Green, Rebecca Roiphe

Fordham Law Review Online

When women accuse powerful men of sexual assault, there is increasing public pressure to resolve any doubts in the accusers’ favor before the criminal process is over, if not from the outset. Private individuals and institutions often do so without worrying about due process, but it is different for the trial court, where the presumption of innocence is supposed to apply. This is especially true where public shaming and the accompanying reputational consequences already constitute a kind of punishment. Although they may be sympathetic to accusers, especially those whose cause is championed by a strong and popular social movement, courts …

The Transcript Profile Changes With Developmental Maturation Of Fetal Lung Type 2 Cells: An Analysis Of Rnaseq Data, Heber C. Nielsen, Volodymyr Orlov, Rebecca Holsapple, Monnie Mcgee

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we utilize next-generation sequencing (NGS) data from the LungMap project to identify and characterize the developmental RNA transcriptome in alveolar epithelial type II cells of embryonic mouse lungs of gestational ages embryonic days 16 (E16) and 18 (E18). Late gestation lung cellular maturation is necessary for survival at birth. Using R and the BioConductor packages for RNAseq analysis, we analyze changes in the mouse lung RNA transcriptome as this maturation process takes place. We particularly identify the cluster of genes whose expression changes markedly between immature (E16) and mature (E18) lungs which can be used to define …
