College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Purpose: Nucleic acid-based therapies are a promising therapeutic tool. The major obstacle in their clinical translation is their efficient delivery to the desired tissue. We developed a novel nanosized delivery system composed of conjugates of α-tocopherol, polyethyleneimine, and polyethylene glycol (TPP) to deliver nucleic acids.
Methods: We synthesized a panel of TPP molecules using different molecular weights of PEG and PEI and analyzed with various analytical approaches. The optimized version of TPP (TPP
Results: Through a panel of synthesized molecules, TPP
Conclusion: These results indicate that we successfully synthesized the TPP

Comparing Profitability And Management Factors Across Operation Type: Independent Vs. Contract Growing, Elliott James Dennis
Extension Farm and Ranch Management News
First paragraph:
There is strong local and national interest in adding hog barns to existing row crop operations. Declining on farm income over the past several years has accelerated this interest. Grain operations cite diversifying farm income, adding another family to the farm operation, and/or replacing commercial fertilizer expense as the primary reasons for adding a hog barn.

Call Of The Wild: A Qualitative Analysis Of Goal-Setting Among Biology Undergraduates At A Regional Zoo, Ashley Barbara Heim, Emily A. Holt
Call Of The Wild: A Qualitative Analysis Of Goal-Setting Among Biology Undergraduates At A Regional Zoo, Ashley Barbara Heim, Emily A. Holt
Teaching & Assessment Symposium Recordings
Free-choice learning at informal settings among undergraduates is relatively understudied. The purpose of the current study was to qualitatively describe what goals biology students set for themselves during an intervention at a regional zoo, and to describe what types of goals students were able to fulfill during this learning opportunity. Based on student responses on this assessment administered in Fall 2018, we aimed to refine the Goal-Setting Assessment, and give context to our initial findings. Specifically, we intended to refine this assessment so that the items are broad enough to be used both in formal classrooms and out-of-school environments.

We Studied What Happens When Guys Add Their Cats To Their Dating App Profiles, Lori Kogan, Shelly Volsche
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
If you’ve used a dating app, you’ll know the importance of choosing good profile pics.
These photos don’t just relay attractiveness; a recent study suggested that 43% of people think they can get a sense of someone’s personality by their picture. You might guess that someone who has included a photo of themselves hiking is an outdoorsy type of person.
But as scientists who study human-animal interactions, we wanted to know what this meant for pet owners – in particular, male cat owners.
If you’re a guy who owns a cat, what kind of effect does it have on suitors …

2019-20 Survey Of Applied Legal Education, Robert R. Kuehn, Margaret Reuter, David A. Santacroce
Faculty Works
This report presents the results of the 2019-20 Center for the Study of Applied Legal Education (CSALE) Survey of Applied Legal Education. The survey was composed of two parts – a Master Survey directed to ABA accredited U.S. law schools and a Sub-Survey distributed to each person teaching in a law clinic or field placement course. Ninety-five percent of law schools and over 1,300 clinical teachers participated in the survey. The results provide valuable insight into clinical programs and law clinic and field placement courses in areas such as design, capacity, administration, funding, and pedagogy, and into the role and …
Smoke From Wildfires Can Worsen Covid-19 Risk, Putting Firefighters In Even More Danger, Luke Montrose
Smoke From Wildfires Can Worsen Covid-19 Risk, Putting Firefighters In Even More Danger, Luke Montrose
Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Two forces of nature are colliding in the western United States, and wildland firefighters are caught in the middle.
Emerging research suggests that the smoke firefighters breathe on the front lines of wildfires is putting them at greater risk from the new coronavirus, with potentially lethal effects.
At the same time, firefighting conditions make precautions such as social distancing and hand-washing difficult, increasing the chance that, once the virus enters a fire camp, it could quickly spread.
As an environmental toxicologist, I have spent the last decade expanding our understanding of how wood smoke exposure impacts human health. Much of …

Feasibility Of An Animated Video Combined With Standard Education: Breast Radiotherapy Video Education (Brave), Michelle F. Pembroke, Lynne S. Nemeth, Martina Mueller, Michelle Mollica, Julie A. Bradley
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
This interventional study explored the feasibility and preliminary impact of combining an animated educational video with standard of care education for patients with breast cancer referred for radiation therapy. Feasibility was determined and preliminary data showed a change in scores for patient reported anxiety, distress, and radiotherapy treatment concerns.

Mechanism And Chemoselectivity For Hocl-Mediated Oxidation Of Zinc-Bound Thiolates, Lindsay Zumwalt, Arden Perkins, O. Maduka Ogba
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Quantum mechanical calculations reveal the preferred mechanism and origins of chemoselectivity for HOCl‐mediated oxidation of zinc‐bound thiolates implicated in bacterial redox sensing. Distortion/interaction models show that minimizing geometric distortion at the zinc complex during the rate‐limiting nucleophilic substitution step controls the mechanistic preference for OH over Cl transfer with HOCl and the chemoselectivity for HOCl over H2O2.

Holstein steers (n = 16) were used to determine if a synthetic alkaloid, bromocriptine, would alter the transcriptome of the small intestine and adjacent mesenteric adipose. On d 0, steers were assigned to one of two treatments: control (CON; saline only) or bromocriptine (BROMO; 0.1 mg/kg BW bromocriptine mesylate injected intramuscularly every 3 d for 30 d). Steers were slaughtered and midpoint sections of jejunal epithelium and associated mesenteric fat were collected for RNA isolation. Transcriptome analysis was completed via RNA-Seq to determine if BROMO differed compared with CON within intestinal epithelium or mesenteric adipose mRNA isolates. Differential expression …

Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), specifically ecoroofs, is increasingly seen as an effective stormwater management tool in urban planning strategies. However, the literature suggests that ecoroofs can be sources of certain metals and nutrients. The goal of our study was to address two research questions: 1) How does ecoroof runoff compare to conventional roof runoff chemically: do ecoroofs retain certain chemicals and leach others? and 2) what are the roof characteristics and environmental variables that affect runoff quality? For 10 months, runoff events from an ecoroof were compared to those of a conventional roof; water samples were collected with autosamplers, and …

Recombinant bacterial cocaine esterase (CocE) represents a potential protein therapeutic for cocaine use disorder treatment. Unfortunately, the native enzyme was highly unstable and the corresponding mutagenized derivatives, RBP-8000 and E196-301, although improving in vitro thermo-stability and in vivo half-life, were a partial solution to the problem. For cocaine use disorder treatment, an efficient cocaine-metabolizing enzyme with a longer residence time in circulation would be needed. We investigated in vitro the possibility of developing red blood cells (RBCs) loaded with RBP-8000 and E196-301 as a biocompatible system to metabolize cocaine for a longer period of time. RBP 8000 stability within human …
