International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 13(2): 1366-1381, 2020. The study tested the hypothesis that a high protein diet based on isolated whey protein (IWP) associated with strength training improves performance and reduces body fat without promoting health damage. Male Wistar rats, 45 days old, were divided into four groups (n = 8 / group): normoprotein sedentary (IWP 14%; NS); hyperprotein sedentary (IWP 35%; HS); normoprotein trained (IWP 14%; NT) and hyperprotein trained (IWP 35%; HT). All groups performed the maximum load test at the beginning and after the vertical ladder training protocol for 6 weeks (3x/week). The performance improved …

Uncertainties Abound In Nebraska Livestock Market Forecasts, Elliott James Dennis Sep 2020

Uncertainties Abound In Nebraska Livestock Market Forecasts, Elliott James Dennis

Extension Farm and Ranch Management News

About one of the only things certain about forecasts this year has been the great deal of uncertainty. Numerous “novel” situations have confronted the industry making it difficult to estimate price magnitudes rather than just price direction. Clustered plant closures, government quarantine restrictions, and increasing at home phone consumption are just a few of the major issues the beef industry has had to tackle in the last six to eight months. Some things have returned to “normal” such as packing plant capacity and food service demand. Others are still in ongoing recovery.

Who knows what “normal” or “standard operating procedure” …

Influence Of Woodsmoke Exposure On Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Alzheimer’S Disease: Existing Literature And Gaps In Our Understanding, Adam Schuller, Luke Montrose Sep 2020

Influence Of Woodsmoke Exposure On Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Alzheimer’S Disease: Existing Literature And Gaps In Our Understanding, Adam Schuller, Luke Montrose

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Woodsmoke poses a significant health risk as a growing component of ambient air pollution in the United States. While there is a long history of association between woodsmoke exposure and diseases of the respiratory, circulatory, and cardiovascular systems, recent evidence has linked woodsmoke exposure to cognitive dysfunction, including Alzheimer’s disease dementia. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with largely idiopathic origins and no known cure. Here, we explore the growing body of literature which relates woodsmoke-generated and ambient air pollution particulate matter exposure to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) onset or exacerbation, in the context of an inflammation-centric view of AD. …

Can The One Health Approach Save Us From The Emergence And Reemergence Of Infectious Pathogens In The Era Of Climate Change: Implications For Antimicrobial Resistance?, Smitha Gudipati, Marcus J. Zervos, Erica Herc

Infectious Diseases Articles

Climate change has become a controversial topic in today's media despite decades of warnings from climate scientists and has influenced human health significantly with the increasing prevalence of infectious pathogens and contribution to antimicrobial resistance. Elevated temperatures lead to rising sea and carbon dioxide levels, changing environments and interactions between humans and other species. These changes have led to the emergence and reemergence of infectious pathogens that have already developed significant antimicrobial resistance. Although these new infectious pathogens are alarming, we can still reduce the burden of infectious diseases in the era of climate change if we focus on One …

The data is based on semi-structured household interviews conducted in Noatak (n = 12), Noorvik (n = 11), and Brevig Mission (n = 12) in the March of 2017. Information gathered consists of individuals use of technology, perceptions about how technology has helped or hindered their ability to do subsistence and address the changing climate, and the role of technology in the community. Demographic information includes gender, race, education, household size, and employment status. Individuals who were particularly knowledgeable and amendable participated in a q-sort exercise to assess values and beliefs regarding technology in their community. Andrew Dickson White And America’S Unfinished (French) Revolution, Gregory S. Brown Sep 2020

Andrew Dickson White And America’S Unfinished (French) Revolution, Gregory S. Brown

History Faculty Research

Andrew Dickson White is not considered a canonical author in the French Revolution's historiography, but rather is known as the founding president of both Cornell University and the American Historical Association (AHA). His best-known published historical writings, when referenced at all, are often derided. Yet in his intellectually formative years, as an earnest abolitionist and amibtious Republican, eager to enter the arena of American political life and anticipating what he would later call "the great revolution" of the Civil War, White made the topic his central academic pursuit - and effectively invented a distinctly American tradition of historiography.

Investigating Dark Net Criminals And The Resulting Legal Consequences, Alec Kirschenbaum Sep 2020

Investigating Dark Net Criminals And The Resulting Legal Consequences, Alec Kirschenbaum

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog

When most people think of the Internet, what they are referring to is what is known as the “Surface Web.” The Surface Web is made up of websites that are indexed by traditional search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Firefox. For instance, when an individual searches for something on Google, he or she is using and accessing the information through the Surface Web. A majority of traditional Internet users believe that they have full access to all of the information available on the Web, but this belief is erroneous. In fact, it has been suggested and estimated by researchers, …

Introducing The Self-Cleaning Filtration For Water Quality Sensors (Sc-Flawless) System, Aashish Sanjay Khandelwal Sep 2020

Introducing The Self-Cleaning Filtration For Water Quality Sensors (Sc-Flawless) System, Aashish Sanjay Khandelwal

Civil Engineering ETDs

Sensor-based, semi-continuous observations of water quality parameters have become critical to understanding how changes in land use, management, and rainfall-runoff processes impact water quality at diurnal to multi-decadal scales. While some commercially available water quality sensors function adequately under a range of turbidity conditions, other instruments, including those used to measure nutrient concentrations, cease to function in high turbidity waters (> 100 NTU) commonly found in large rivers, arid-land rivers, and coastal areas. This is particularly true during storm events, when increases in turbidity are often concurrent with increases in nutrient transport. Here, we present the development and validation of …
