In the United States (U.S.) alone, nearly 10 billion farmed animals are raised and killed for food each year, and approximately 99% of these animals are raised in factory farms, where they are mutilated without anesthetic, confined to cramped and overcrowded cages and sheds, forcibly separated at birth from their mothers, deprived of the opportunity to move freely and engage in species-specific behavior, and killed violently (Sentience Institute 2019). Given the terrible harms that billions of animals endure on U.S. factory farms each year, we must ask: why do so many people repeatedly partake in and support such a morally …

A large number of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) integrase (IN) alterations, referred to as class II substitutions, exhibit pleiotropic effects during virus replication. However, the underlying mechanism for the class II phenotype is not known. Here we demonstrate that all tested class II IN substitutions compromised IN-RNA binding in virions by one of the three distinct mechanisms: (i) markedly reducing IN levels thus precluding the formation of IN complexes with viral RNA; (ii) adversely affecting functional IN multimerization and consequently impairing IN binding to viral RNA; and (iii) directly compromising IN-RNA interactions without substantially affecting IN levels or functional …

Inclusive Vision Versus Special Education Reality, James M. Kauffman, Garry Hornby
More Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Research
The reasons are examined for the disparity between the inclusive vision espoused by Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the reality of the limited extent of inclusion in education systems worldwide. First, the leadership of key senior academics in the field of special education is considered to have been misguided in promoting a vision of full inclusion despite the lack of research evidence for the benefits of inclusive education over traditional special education provision. Second, attitudes toward and the treatment of people with disabilities have a long and complex history, and …

Biomedical prosthetics utilizing electrical stimulation have limited, effective spatial resolution due to spread of electrical currents to surrounding tissue, causing nonselective stimulation. So, precise spatial resolution is not possible for traditional neural prosthetic devices, such as cochlear implants. More recently, alternative methods utilize optical stimulation, mainly infrared, sometimes paired with nanotechnology for stimulating action potentials. Infrared stimulation has its own drawbacks, as it may cause collateral heating of surrounding tissue. In previous work, we employed a plasmonic method for stimulation of an electrically excitable neuroblastoma cell line, which had limited success. Here, we report the development of a hybrid electro-plasmonic …

BACKGROUND: Enhanced diastolic calcium (Ca
METHODS: Western blotting was performed with right atrial biopsies from patients with paroxysmal AF. SPEG atrial knockout mice were generated using adeno-associated virus 9. In mice, AF inducibility was determined using intracardiac programmed electric stimulation, and diastolic Ca
RESULTS: Western blotting revealed decreased SPEG protein levels in atrial biopsies from patients with paroxysmal AF in comparison with patients in sinus rhythm. SPEG atrial-specific knockout mice exhibited increased susceptibility to pacing-induced AF by programmed electric stimulation and enhanced Ca
CONCLUSIONS: Unlike other kinases (PKA, CaMKII) that increase RyR2 activity, SPEG phosphorylation reduces RyR2-mediated sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca

A Review Of Quarantine Period In Relation To Incubation Period Of Sars-Cov-2, Satya Rashmit Durugu, Hammad Tanzeem, Divya Menghani, Zahid Imran, Priya Krishnan
The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
Introduction: The period from exposure to a potential pathogen to the manifestation of symptoms, i.e. the incubation period, is time the virus spends replicating in the host. An estimation of this period and subsequent quarantine of the host can limit potential spread, particularly in asymptomatic carriers. Effective contact tracing, length of self-quarantine, repeat testing, and understanding of disease transmission are all contingent on a true estimation of this incubation period.

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections
Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 has been strongly associated with respiratory illnesses; however the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection of the gastrointestinal tract is not fully clear. We examined the frequency of positive stool SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in COVID-19 patients, duration of stool viral shedding after the viral clearance of respiratory samples, and the association of SARS-CoV-2 infection with gastrointestinal symptoms.
Methods: We did a search in PubMed and Google Scholar of studies published in the English language before June 30th, 2020. Search queries included: “COVID-19”, “SARS-CoV-2”, and “stool SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR”. We excluded studies with less than 8 patients from our …

Purpose—In 2007 the two senior authors wrote a review on the structure and function of the endothelial glycocalyx layer (Weinbaum in Annu Rev Biomed Eng 9:121–167, 2007). Since then there has been an explosion of interest in this hydrated gel-like structure that coats the luminal surface of endothelial cells that line our vasculature due to its important functions in (A) basic vascular physiology and (B) vascular related diseases. This review will highlight the major advances that have occurred since our 2007 paper.
Methods—A literature search mainly focusing on the role of the glycocalyx in the two major areas described above …

Establishing Topological Data Analysis: A Comparison Of Visualization Techniques, Tanmay J. Kotha
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When visualizing data, we would like to convey both the data and the uncertainty associated with it. There are many incentives to do this, ranging from hurricane path projection to geographical surveys. Important decision making tasks rely upon humans perceiving a clear picture of the data and having confidence in their decisions. Topological Data Analysis has the potential to visualize the data as features or hierarchies in ways that are familiar to human intuition, and thus could help us convey the variation associated with uncertainty.
In this thesis, we evaluate four visualization techniques: color maps, isocontours, Reeb graphs, and persistence …

Sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) stimulation has been shown to reversibly alter blood-brainbarrier (BBB) permeability. It is widely used for the treatment of cluster headaches in Europe and iswell tolerated in humans. The therapeutic potential for SPG stimulation in other central nervoussystem (CNS) diseases has yet to be explored. Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) remains one of themost difficult primary CNS neoplasms to treat, with an average survival of approximately 18 months atthe time of diagnosis. Since 2004, the gold standard of treatment for GBM in the United States includessurgery followed by treatment with temozolomide (TMZ) and radiation. We sought to determine ifSPG stimulation …
Degradation Of Transcriptional Repressor Atf4 During Late-Phase Long-Term Potentiation, Spencer Smith
Degradation Of Transcriptional Repressor Atf4 During Late-Phase Long-Term Potentiation, Spencer Smith
Biology Theses
Maintenance of long-term synaptic plasticity requires gene expression mediated by cAMP-responsive element binding protein (CREB). Gene expression driven by CREB can commence only if the inhibition by a transcriptional repressor ATF4 (activating transcription factor 4; aka CREB2) is relieved. Previous research showed that the removal of ATF4 occurs through ubiquitin-proteasome-mediated proteolysis. Using chemically induced hippocampal long-term potentiation (cLTP) as a model system, we investigated the mechanisms that control ATF4 degradation. We observed that ATF4 phosphorylated at Serine-219 increases upon induction of cLTP and decreases by about 30 min thereafter. Proteasome inhibitor β-lactone prevents the decrease in ATF4. We found that …
Preparation Characterization And Tribological Behavior Of Lube Oil With Nanoparticles Additives, Waleed Alghani
Preparation Characterization And Tribological Behavior Of Lube Oil With Nanoparticles Additives, Waleed Alghani
Student Works (2020-2029)
There are many companies worldwide that would like to improve and upgrade the lube oil and enhance its performance. There is a big concern for the enhancement of lube oil by using nanotechnology and more precisely with using nanomaterial additives. Much work has made to explore and develop new sorts of lubricating oil nano-additives to diminish wear and friction in tribological configurations and to enhance surface morphology. It has noted that the use of dual nano-additives should examine the lubricating capacity and durability of lubricant. (TiO2 Anatase + Graphene) and (ZnO + Graphene) nanoparticles have selected to formulate nano-additives that …

In Vitro Susceptibility Of Treponema Pallidum Subsp Pallidum To Doxycycline, Diane G Edmondson, Gary P Wormser, Steven J Norris
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Doxycycline is regarded as an effective therapy for early syphilis, and there is increasing interest in using doxycycline for prophylaxis of this infection. However, the MIC of doxycycline for Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum has not been reported previously. In this study, an in vitro culture system was utilized to determine that the MIC of doxycycline is 0.06 to 0.10 μg/ml for four strains of T. pallidum subsp. pallidum (Nichols, SS14, UW231B, and UW249B). The Nichols strain cultured in vitro with doxycycline was also tested for infectivity in rabbits, and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was found to be ≤0.1 μg/ml …
