Truth Is A Potato: A Journey Into Tolstoy's Resurrection, Ryan Adam Sep 2020

Truth Is A Potato: A Journey Into Tolstoy's Resurrection, Ryan Adam

Global Insight

The over-intellecualization of the questions of Truth and Justice only muddy the challenge of living correctly and alienate us from actual practicable answers, answers which have been here, Tolstoy argues, for millenia. Tolstoy, through the character of Prince Nekhlyudov in Resurrection, oppose simplicity and hard-scrabble peasant wisdom to the labyrinths and mountains of intellectualism and state-sanctioned correctness. This article explores Tolstoy's ideas regarding the nature and substance of Truth, pursing them through the author's biography as well as the experiences of the Prince. It concludes that, for any flaws in his reasoning, his beliefs still offer a viable solution to …

Exploration Of The Neisseria Resistome Reveals Resistance Mechanisms In Commensals That May Be Acquired By N. Gonorrhoeae Through Horizontal Gene Transfer, Michael A. Fiore, Jordan C. Raisman, Narayan H. Wong, André O. Hudson, Crista B. Wadsworth

Articles

Nonpathogenic Neisseria transfer mutations encoding antibiotic resistance to their pathogenic relative Neisseria gonorrhoeae. However, the resistance genotypes and subsequent phenotypes of nonpathogens within the genus have been described infrequently. Here, we characterize the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of a panel of Neisseria (n = 26)—including several commensal species—to a suite of diverse antibiotics. We furthermore use whole genome sequencing and the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database Resistance Gene Identifier (RGI) platform to predict putative resistance-encoding mutations. Resistant isolates to all tested antimicrobials including penicillin (n = 5/26), ceftriaxone (n = 2/26), cefixime (n = 3/26), tetracycline (n = 10/26), azithromycin (n …

Assessment Of Soil Properties Under Different Land Use Types In Olokemeji Forest Reserves In Ogun State Southwestern Nigeria, Oluwatoyin Opeyemi Akintola, Adewunmi Idayat Bodede, Michael Smart, Ayodeji Gideon Adebayo, Olawale Nurean Sulaiman

Journal of Bioresource Management

Knowledge of soil properties is essential for environmental sustainability for any forest reserve or plantation. The physical and chemical properties of soil under three different land uses was investigated to assess the nutrient and fertility status of the soils. Fifteen soil samples, each collected from different locations within the natural forest, plantation and farm land were analyzed for soil texture, bulk density, porosity, pH, organic carbon, organic matter content, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn. Texturally, the soils were loamy, loamy sand and sandy loamy in the natural forest, plantation and farmland respectively. …

The Zika Virus Individual Participant Data Consortium: A Global Initiative To Estimate The Effects Of Exposure To Zika Virus During Pregnancy On Adverse Fetal, Infant, And Child Health Outcomes, Yinghui Wei

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This commentary describes the creation of the Zika Virus Individual Participant Data Consortium, a global collaboration to address outstanding questions in Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemiology through conducting an individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA). The aims of the IPD-MA are to (1) estimate the absolute and relative risks of miscarriage, fetal loss, and short- and long-term sequelae of fetal exposure; (2) identify and quantify the relative importance of different sources of heterogeneity (e.g., immune profiles, concurrent flavivirus infection) for the risk of adverse fetal, infant, and child outcomes among infants exposed to ZIKV in utero; and (3) develop and validate a …

Remote Cameras Versus Visual And Auditory Methods For Surveying The Colorado Chipmunk (Neotamias Quadrivittatus), Ian E. Perkins-Taylor, Jennifer K. Frey Sep 2020

Remote Cameras Versus Visual And Auditory Methods For Surveying The Colorado Chipmunk (Neotamias Quadrivittatus), Ian E. Perkins-Taylor, Jennifer K. Frey

Western North American Naturalist

Noninvasive survey methods may be necessary when studying rare species or when site conditions are likely to result in unintended mortalities during conventional live trapping. Traditional noninvasive methods based on visual and auditory observations, such as stationary point and roaming, time-constrained area surveys, may be prone to error. Remote cameras are primarily used with large mammals but have increasingly been applied to small mammals. We compared survey methods for a rare subspecies of the Colorado chipmunk (Neotamias quadrivittatus oscuraensis) occurring in a remote mountain range in New Mexico using stationary point surveys; roaming, time-constrained area surveys; and remote-camera …

Esophageal Baseline Impedance From High-Resolution Impedance Manometry Correlates With Mean Nocturnal Baseline Impedance From Ph-Impedance Monitoring, Anthony Horton, Brian Sullivan, Katie Charles, Thasha Mcintosh, Andrea Davis, Ziad Gellad, Rahul Shimpi, C Prakash Gyawali, Amit Patel Sep 2020

Esophageal Baseline Impedance From High-Resolution Impedance Manometry Correlates With Mean Nocturnal Baseline Impedance From Ph-Impedance Monitoring, Anthony Horton, Brian Sullivan, Katie Charles, Thasha Mcintosh, Andrea Davis, Ziad Gellad, Rahul Shimpi, C Prakash Gyawali, Amit Patel

Open Access Publications

Background/Aims: Esophageal baseline impedance (BI) can be extracted from pH-impedance tracings as mean nocturnal baseline impedance (MNBI), and from high-resolution impedance manometry (HRIM), but it is unknown if values are similar between acquisition methods across HRIM manufacturers. We aim to assess correlations between MNBI and BI from HRIM (BI-HRIM) from 2 HRIM manufacturers in the setting of physiologic acid exposure time (AET).

Methods: HRIM and pH-impedance monitoring demonstrating physiologic AET (< 4%) off proton pump inhibitors were required. BI-HRIM was extracted as the average from 5 cm and 10 cm above the lower esophageal sphincter. Distal BI-HRIM (DBI-HRIM) was also extracted from the most distal channel (Medtronic studies). MNBI was extracted from 6 channels. Concordance between BI-HRIM across manufacturers with MNBI was analyzed.

Results: Thirty-six patients met the inclusion criteria (59.6 ± 1.7 years; 22% female; body mass index 30.5 ± 0.7; AET 1.6 ± 0.2%). Although MNBI was similar at all …

The survey results in Indonesia in 2017 showed that the diarrhea morbidity rate for all age groups was 6.897.463. In Indonesia, unripe wooden banana has been used empirically as an antidiarrheal by the people in Senduro village, Lumajang, East Java. The study aimed to prove the antidiarrheal effect of ethanol extract of unripe wooden banana (Musa paradisiaca L) in male Balb-C/mice induced by Escherichia coli bacteria. This study was a laboratory experimental study with post-test only control group design that used 40 micedivided into 8 groups, namely 1group without treatment (normal mice) and 7 groups induced by Escherichia coli(1negative controlgroup given …

Terms Of Endearment: The Displacement Of Inday, Hazel T. Biana, Ruel M. Nalam Sep 2020

Terms Of Endearment: The Displacement Of Inday, Hazel T. Biana, Ruel M. Nalam

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The term inday implies two possible meanings depending on where one is in the Philippines. In the Luzon group of islands, more specifically in Metro Manila, inday refers to the female help, usually of Visayan descent. On the other hand, in the Visayas and Mindanao group of islands, inday is a term used for endearment and respect for female family members, friends, and women of influence. What this paper aims to do is to provide a theoretical grounding, through oppositional gazing, of why the term inday oscillates between varied definitions in the context of placism or discrimination of people based …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Arthropod pests and vectors constrain the livelihood opportunities of people in Africa by debilitating production of crops and livestock and through transmission of vector-borne diseases. In the absence of effective alternative management options to tackle these pests and vectors, there is extensive dependence on synthetic pesticides for their management on crop and livestock systems, with significant negative impacts on animal and human health, and the environment. Biopesticides are effective and environmentally sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. At the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), the Arthropod Pathology Unit (APU) was established for effective biopesticide research-for-development (R4D), underpinned by …

Fixing Social Media: Toward A Democratic Digital Commons, Michael Kwet Sep 2020

Fixing Social Media: Toward A Democratic Digital Commons, Michael Kwet

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

In the past few years, big Social Media networks like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have received intense scrutiny from the intellectual classes. This article critiques the dominant strain of criticism, the neo-Brandeisian School of antitrust, for its narrow focus on “regulated competition” as an appropriate means to “fix social media”. This essay calls for a socialist alternative: a democratic social media commons based on free and open source technology, decentralization, and democratic socialist legal solutions. It reviews how existing solutions like the Fediverse and LibreSocial work, and how they may provide answers for a better way forward.
