Litigating Welfare Rights: Medicaid, Snap, And The Legacy Of The New Property, Andrew Hammond Oct 2020

Litigating Welfare Rights: Medicaid, Snap, And The Legacy Of The New Property, Andrew Hammond

Northwestern University Law Review

In 2017, the Republican-controlled Congress was poised to make deep cuts to the nation’s two largest anti-poverty programs: Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as “food stamps.” Yet, despite a unified, GOP-led federal government for the first time in over a decade, those efforts failed. Meanwhile, the Trump Administration and its allies in state government continue to pursue different strategies to roll back entitlements to medical and food assistance. As public interest lawyers challenge these agency actions in federal court, roughly five million Americans’ health insurance and food assistance hang in the balance. This Article asks …

Development Of A Bionic Interactive Interface For Owl Robot Using Stereo Vision Algorithms, James Rogers, Philip Culverhouse, Benjamin Wickenden, Chunxu Li Oct 2020

Development Of A Bionic Interactive Interface For Owl Robot Using Stereo Vision Algorithms, James Rogers, Philip Culverhouse, Benjamin Wickenden, Chunxu Li

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

With the requirements for improving life quality, companion robots have gradually become hotspot of application for healthy home living. In this article, a novel bionic human-robot interaction (HRI) strategy using stereo vision algorithms has been developed to imitate the animal vision system on the Owl robot. Depth information of a target is found via two methods, vergence and disparity. Vergence requires physical tracking of the target, moving each camera to align with a chosen object, and through successive camera movements (saccades) a sparse depth map of the scene can be built up. Disparity however requires the cameras to be fixed …

Introgression Of The Afila Gene Into Climbing Garden Pea (Pisum Sativum L.), Oscar Eduardo Checa, Marino Rodriguez, Xingbo Wu, Matthew Wohlgemuth Blair

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

The pea (Pisum sativum L.) is one of the most important crops in temperate agriculture around the world. In the tropics, highland production is also common with multiple harvests of nearly mature seeds from climbing plant types on trellises. While the leafless variant caused by the afila gene is widely used in developing row-cropped field peas in Europe, its use for trellised garden peas has not been reported. In this study we describe a pea breeding program for a high-elevation tropical environment in the Department of Nariño in Colombia, where over 16,000 hectares of the crop are produced. The most …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Although endometrial cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive tract, we have little understanding of what controls endometrial cancer beyond the transcriptional effects of steroid hormones such as estrogen. As a result, we have limited therapeutic options for the ~62,000 women diagnosed with endometrial cancer each year in the United States. Here, in an attempt to identify new prognostic and therapeutic targets, we focused on a new area for this cancer-alternative mRNA splicing-and investigated whether splicing factor, SF3B1, plays an important role in endometrial cancer pathogenesis. Using a tissue microarray, we found that human endometrial tumors expressed …

Beauty In The Grotesque; Review Of Hayden's Ferry Review, Spring/Summer 2008, Zachary Boissonneau

The Review Review

Hayden's Ferry Review is a biannual publication of Arizona State University's creative writing department. The Spring/Summer 2008 issue--themed "The Grotesque"--features poetry, fiction, and visual art from over sixty contributors, and includes an international section. It seems to be split evenly between poetry and prose as far as page count goes, and the only obvious continuity of set up is the entire international section sandwiched between the scattered poetry, prose, and visual art.

Esteemed Lit Mag Charts Wide Experience Of Human Nature; Review Of Five Points, Winter 2015 - 2016, Tripp Reade

The Review Review

Shall I begin with the Five Points 17.1 contributor’s list? Will you want to know that these pages are spangled with NEA, Guggenheim, and Rockefeller fellowships, Pushcart, Library of Congress, and AWP prizes, magazine editors, professors, and poets-in residence? That the list of their published chapbooks, collections, short stories, and novels would consume the rest of this review if I let it? Or will it be better to turn aside, into a consideration of the issue itself? The latter? By all means, then.

The Use Of Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate As A Partial Replacement For Sand On The Mechanical Properties Of Structural Concrete, Jacob Black Oct 2020

The Use Of Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate As A Partial Replacement For Sand On The Mechanical Properties Of Structural Concrete, Jacob Black

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Negative environmental impacts caused by the over-extraction of sand have arisen due to the high demand of global concrete production. Subsequently, the need to find an adequate replacement for sand in concrete production is paramount. Additionally, the mismanagement of plastic waste in Southeast Asia has resulted in large quantities being sent to landfill. This could otherwise be used as a viable alternative. Several studies have investigated the effect of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) aggregate as a partial replacement for sand on the mechanical, durability and physical properties of concrete. Nevertheless, due to the broad number of variables affecting the properties of …

Social Networks Differ Depending On Aggressive And Affiliative Interactions Of Captive Ring-Tailed Lemurs (Lemur Catta), Kerry Marcus Oct 2020

Social Networks Differ Depending On Aggressive And Affiliative Interactions Of Captive Ring-Tailed Lemurs (Lemur Catta), Kerry Marcus

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Social network analysis provides a deeper understanding of the dynamic social relationships within a social group through identifying centrality, subgroups, isolated individuals and preferred or avoided dyads which have shown effective for the study of dominance hierarchies (Funkhouser et al., 2018). However, this is rarely used in captive environments despite showing promise for its management. In this study, social network analysis was used to investigate the dominance hierarchy, dyadic and group-level social relationships in a captive group of 11 ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at Bristol Zoo Gardens. Focal-animal and instantaneous scan sampling were used to collect 90 total hours of …

Investigation Into The Process Of Cured-In-Place Pipe Sewer Rehabilitation, Caitlin Mitchell Oct 2020

Investigation Into The Process Of Cured-In-Place Pipe Sewer Rehabilitation, Caitlin Mitchell

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Sewer networks affect the entire world with the ability to bring clean streets to cities which may otherwise be completely disease-ridden. Ageing sewer networks present a problem, but new technologies are paving the way for rehabilitation. Trenchless repair options such as CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) liners are one such option. This paper aims to evaluate the full process that precedes and proceeds the installation of a CIPP liner for the rehabilitation of a defective sewer with the aim of finding potential solutions to the current concerns and to streamline the full CIPP method. Further inspection was conducted into the testing practises …

Developing A Common Language Of Ethical Engagement In Teaching: Lessons For And From A Time Of Crisis, Richard D. Sawyer

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This article explores how educators may develop and contribute to a common language of ethical engagement, a language that rises above specific actions but is grounded in ethical practice and scholarship. Questions are raised about how online education may further the patterns educational inequities in the United States. An ethics framework is explored through a comparison. The author explores the educational principles--not standards—that educators can surface in their teaching practice. A discussion is included of recent dilemmas and problems with online teaching environments, underscoring the need for ethical principles helping to frame practice.

Defying Dementia: An Exploration Of Recovery, Deb Miller, Corey W. Johnson Oct 2020

Defying Dementia: An Exploration Of Recovery, Deb Miller, Corey W. Johnson

The Qualitative Report

Exploring the human side of dementia helps put a face on this fast-growing affliction. This study reflects one elderly woman’s story of recovery from dementia that arose following a stroke. Painting a portrait of life with dementia can help us conceptualize the experience, how people live and how they would like to live. The woman is Marcia, my mom, and this is a qualitative inquiry with a collaborative narrative design to explore her experiences and to document my own. This study may help dementia patients and their support teams better understand the process of living with dementia and can perhaps …

Acute Kidney Injury Pathology And Pathophysiology: A Retrospective Review, Joseph P. Gaut, Helen Liapis Oct 2020

Acute Kidney Injury Pathology And Pathophysiology: A Retrospective Review, Joseph P. Gaut, Helen Liapis

Open Access Publications

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the clinical term used for decline or loss of renal function. It is associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and high morbidity and mortality. However, not all causes of AKI lead to severe consequences and some are reversible. The underlying pathology can be a guide for treatment and assessment of prognosis. The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes guidelines recommend that the cause of AKI should be identified if possible. Renal biopsy can distinguish specific AKI entities and assist in patient management. This review aims to show the pathology of AKI, including glomerular and tubular diseases.

Relationship-Enhancing Transcendent Religious Experiences Encourage Relational Meaning, Depth, Healing, And Action, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks, Alyssa Banford Witting, Ashley B. Lebaron, Kaity Peal Young, Joe M. Chelladurai

Faculty Publications

Research on the relationship between religion, spirituality, and health suggests that religious involvement can help people deal with various kinds of adversity. Although there has been a great deal of work on the influence of religious involvement and religious and spiritual practices on physical, mental, and relational health, there exists a gap in the theoretical and empirical literature about the potential benefits of transcendent religious experiences on marriage and family relationships. We report some findings from a study of in-depth interviews with 198 religious American exemplar families from diverse religious, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds. The religious-ethnic make-up of the sample …
