Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a prevalent, painful side effect which arises due to a number of chemotherapy agents. CIPN can have a prolonged effect on quality of life. Chemotherapy treatment is often reduced or stopped altogether because of the severe pain. Currently, there are no FDA-approved treatments for CIPN partially due to its complex pathogenesis in multiple pathways involving a variety of channels, specifically, voltage-gated ion channels. One aspect of neuropathic pain in vitro is hyperexcitability in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) peripheral sensory neurons. Our study employs bifurcation theory to investigate the role of voltage-gated ion channels in inducing …

Given the recent trend towards establishing very large marine protected areas (MPAs) and the high potential of these to contribute to global conservation targets, we review outcomes of the last decade of marine conservation research in the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), one of the largest MPAs in the world. The BIOT MPA consists of the atolls of the Chagos Archipelago, interspersed with and surrounded by deep oceanic waters. Islands around the atoll rims serve as nesting grounds for sea birds. Extensive and diverse shallow and mesophotic reef habitats provide essential habitat and feeding grounds for all marine life, and …

Arthropod Intelligence? The Case For Portia, Fiona R. Cross, Georgina E. Carvell, Robert R. Jackson, Randolph C. Grace Oct 2020

Arthropod Intelligence? The Case For Portia, Fiona R. Cross, Georgina E. Carvell, Robert R. Jackson, Randolph C. Grace

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Macphail’s “null hypothesis,” that there are no differences in intelligence, qualitative, or quantitative, between non-human vertebrates has been controversial. This controversy can be useful if it encourages interest in acquiring a detailed understanding of how non-human animals express flexible problem-solving capacity (“intelligence”), but limiting the discussion to vertebrates is too arbitrary. As an example, we focus here on Portia, a spider with an especially intricate predatory strategy and a preference for other spiders as prey. We review research on pre-planned detours, expectancy violation, and a capacity to solve confinement problems where, in each of these three contexts, there is experimental …

Far, Far, Away… In Ireland: Reading “Eveline” As A Fairytale, Anne Pino Oct 2020

Far, Far, Away… In Ireland: Reading “Eveline” As A Fairytale, Anne Pino

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper gives a fresh new perspective on James Joyce’s classic short story "Eveline". "Eveline" is read and analyzed through a fairytale lens and compared to the classic Disney princess Cinderella. This comparison provides perspective on gender roles, Irish oppression, and the purpose of Eveline’s ultimate paralysis. Garnering support from critics Gary Leonard, Margot Norris, and Maxwell Uphaus, this paper serves to evaluate the importance of symbols and allegory in the text. The most important symbols that relate "Eveline" to a dejected Irish princess are the lack of parental support, dust, and prince charming meant to rescue the main character. …

Can Virtual Reality Mimic Prism Adaptation?, Taylor Heuer

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

Prism adaptation therapy is a commonly-used treatment for the neurological disorder, spatial neglect, in which patients are unable to attend to or interact with one side of their visual field. Prism adaptation induces a sensory mismatch between patients’ motor movements and visual input through the use of prisms which shift the visual field either to the left or right. Patients have to adjust their motor movements to align with their shifted visual input. This process results in aftereffects that alleviate the symptoms of neglect. The goal of this research is to determine whether a virtual reality version of prism adaptation …

Sin And The Hacker Ethic: The Tragedy Of Techno-Utopian Ideology In Cyberspace Business Cultures, Bruce D. Baker Oct 2020

Sin And The Hacker Ethic: The Tragedy Of Techno-Utopian Ideology In Cyberspace Business Cultures, Bruce D. Baker

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This article traces the course of idealistic thinking in the “hacker ethic” of the computer industry, with the aim of diagnosing the unfortunate lapses in business ethics that can ensue from idealistic thinking. Several Silicon Valley companies are mentioned, but Facebook is the prime example, simply because they are the biggest target and clearest example of bad ethics. The original “hacker ethic” was founded on admirable ideals, but the problem occurs when these ideals are used to rationalize a self-serving ideology. Facebook’s history shows how idealistic thinking can become embedded in a business culture. As an antidote to the ethical …

تأثير الجيل الثالث للثورة الرقميةعلى صياغة تشكيل الكتل المعمارية والعمرانية المعاصرة, محمد وهبه إبراهيم

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Since the earliest beginning of history, architectural fortresses have acquired varied forms and masses. It was possible to interpret justifications for using many of them; however, usage of some of these forms and masses is still considered as a perplexing mystery for scholars, analysts and interested persons in the topic of mass formulation in architecture. For example, the Giza Pyramids in Egypt which were built 4500 years ago, whose pyramidal mass, which was the output of several astronomic and mathematical relations in the pyramid form, the world is still till our present day analyzing the inherent ideas beyond them. Throughout …

Sustainable Urban Development In Historical Areas Using The Tourist Trail Approach: A Case Study Of The Cultural Heritage And Urban Development (Chud) Project In Saida, Lebanon., Khaled Al Hagla

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Cultural assets are vital aspects for any urban development process. Their importance increases considerably in historical areas, where the richness of cultural heritage has the ability to motivate cultural tourism. This paper emphasizes the sustainable development of urban historical areas based on their potential as cultural tourism sites. It argues that to guarantee the sustainability of any development intervention in these areas, a master planning process must be undertaken to balance all of the aspects of development. It tackles the interconnectedness of these aspects as an approach to their simultaneous development. As a focus of study, this paper raises a …

Do Pets Improve Mental Health During Covid Lockdowns?, Harold Herzog

Herzog - Companion Animals and Health

During Covid lockdowns, shelters and pet stores have reported an increased demand for pets to adopt or buy. It has been suggested that pets might help address loneliness during periods of social isolation. A new study in the UK found that there was a small positive effect of pet ownership during Covid lockdowns but there were also associated worries such as what might happen to the pet if the owner became ill.

Poverty, Literacy, And Race: A Middle School Teacher's Iterative Investigative Journey, Rebecca Tuttle

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

This study describes an iterative design process that helped me gain a better understanding of the problems (how motivation affects learning and gaining the trust of children that I worked with) I was inquiring about. The design process chronicles three iterations before reaching my final research question focused on building relationships with children of minoritized communities within their learning environment and integrating culturally relevant pedagogy into their learning. By combining these two strategies, the children in this study seemed to embrace being part of a culturally relevant experiment. The components of these iterations include pre-reading activities, read alouds, group discussions, …

Effects Of Low-Level Artificial Light At Night On Kentucky Bluegrass And Introduced Herbivore, Morgan Crump, Cassandra Brown, Robert J. Griffin-Nolan, Lisa Angeloni, Nathan P. Lemoine, Brett Seymoure

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Increasing evidence suggests that artificial light at night (ALAN) can negatively impact organisms. However, most studies examine the impacts of ALAN on a single species or under high levels of artificial light that are infrequent or unrealistic in urban environments. We currently have little information on how low levels of artificial light emanating from urban skyglow affect plants and their interactions with herbivores. We examined how low levels of ALAN affect grass and insects, including growth rate, photosynthesis, and stomatal conductance in grass, and foraging behavior and survival in crickets. We compared growth and leaf-level gas exchange of Kentucky Bluegrass …

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Dysregulated signaling in neurons and astrocytes participates in pathophysiological alterations seen in the Alzheimer's disease brain, including increases in amyloid-β, hyperphosphorylated tau, inflammation, calcium dysregulation, and oxidative stress. These are often noted prior to the development of behavioral, cognitive, and non-cognitive deficits. However, the extent to which these pathological changes function together or independently is unclear.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the temporal relationship between calcium dysregulation and oxidative stress, as some reports suggest that dysregulated calcium promotes increased formation of reactive oxygen species, while others support the opposite. Prior work has quantified several key outcome measures associated with …

Not Remotely Familiar: How Covid-19 Is Reshaping Teachers’ Work And The Implications For Teacher Education, Alisun Thompson, Lina Darwich, Lora Bartlett

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the teacher workforce into distance teaching essentially overnight. This educational migration, necessitated by the public health emergency, has dramatically altered and diversified the realities of teachers’ working lives and the conditions in which they teach. This changing environment has important implications for teacher education. This paper presents five assumptions about teacher education and the uncertain work of preparing culturally responsive and social –justice oriented teachers for a rapidly evolving teaching environment. We seek to animate questions and concerns about teacher education in the context of COVID-19 and the implications for social justice teacher preparation.

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

AIM: Hyperthermia (HT) has been shown to improve clinical response to radiation therapy (RT) for cancer. Synergism is dramatically enhanced if HT and RT are combined simultaneously, but appropriate technology to apply treatments together does not exist. This study investigates the feasibility of delivering HT with RT to a 5-10mm annular rim of at-risk tissue around a tumor resection cavity using a temporary thermobrachytherapy (TBT) balloon implant.

METHODS: A balloon catheter was designed to deliver radiation from High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy concurrent with HT delivered by filling the balloon with magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) and immersing it in a radiofrequency …

Iuu Fishing As A National Security Threat: Revisiting India’S Domestic Framework And Compliance With International Regimes, Pooja Bhatt

International Law Studies

Within India, illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing typically has been viewed as a non-traditional security concern that includes food and economic security, as well as broader societal and political issues. This article argues for understanding IUU fishing in a broader and deeper way and to view this issue as a traditional security threat. Several developments merit this approach, including the threat posed by foreign fishing vessels near Indian waters. Such distant water fishing vessels have been found fishing illegally around the world. On several occasions, these vessels are present near the exclusive economic zone of other states, raising serious …
