Rhetorical Criticism In The Classroom Vs. In Competition: A Consideration Of The Impact Of Context On Student Scholarship, Richard E. Paine Oct 2020

Rhetorical Criticism In The Classroom Vs. In Competition: A Consideration Of The Impact Of Context On Student Scholarship, Richard E. Paine

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

A battle has long waged in forensics between those who would define it as an "educational activity" and those who see it first and foremost as a "competitive game." Others have asserted that this dichotomy is a false one, and responded to the question by conflating the two concepts, arguing that competition automatically produces learning while learning paves the road to success. This paper argues that both of these perspectives are flawed, and asserts instead the image of a continuum of choice which is anchored at one end by "pure competition" and at the other by "pure learning." This view …

The Digitisation Of Food Manufacturing To Reduce Waste – Case Study Of A Ready Meal Factory, Sandeep Jagtap Oct 2020

The Digitisation Of Food Manufacturing To Reduce Waste – Case Study Of A Ready Meal Factory, Sandeep Jagtap

Defensive Publications Series

Generation of food waste (FW) continues to be a global challenge and high on the political agenda. One of the main reasons for its generation is the absence of detailed data on the amount, timing and reasons for created waste. This paper discusses the design, the application and investigates the Internet of Things (IoT) based FW monitoring system to capture waste data during manufacturing in real-time and make it available to all the stakeholders in a food supply chain (FSC). A case study of ready-meal factory comprises of design and architecture for tracking FW including both hardware and software, its …

That's My Voice! Participation And Democratic Citizenship In The Early Childhood Classroom, Monica Miller Marsh, Elizabeth A. Kenyon, Terri Cardy, Erin M. West

Democracy & Education

This paper shares a participatory action research study conducted by a team of researchers at a university laboratory school in collaboration with three classroom teachers and 60 preschoolers. The team engaged in this research in order to examine the ways in which school personnel could generate more authentic community service experiences with, rather than simply for, children. Findings illustrate that with the support of adults, children generated ways to address issues, discussed their ideas with adults, reflected on their actions, and understood that their voices were being heard beyond the school community. With this increased participation, young people were able …

An Annotated Atlas Of The Freshwater Fishes Of North Carolina, Bryn H. Tracy, Fred C. Rohde, Gabriela M. Hogue Oct 2020

An Annotated Atlas Of The Freshwater Fishes Of North Carolina, Bryn H. Tracy, Fred C. Rohde, Gabriela M. Hogue

Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings

North Carolina’s first state-specific checklist of freshwater fish species was published in 1709 by John Lawson. Subsequent species lists with descriptions included: Brickell (1737), Cope (1870a), Jordan (1889a), Jordan and Evermann (1896-1900), Smith (1907), Jordan et al. (1930), Fowler (1945), Louder (1962), Ratledge et al. (1966), Menhinick et al. (1974). In 1991, Menhinick published “The Freshwater Fishes of North Carolina”, which is still widely in use because a comprehensive update has not been produced since its publication. The increase in the availability of historical records in globally accessible databases and the surge of collections post-1991 …

Ebola Virus Disease: The Biology, Pathology, Treatments, And Advancements, Dhruvi Patel, Eric Delgado, Peter Nasr

Kean Quest

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is caused by a virulent pathogen, which is a member of the viral family Filoviridae. It is a filamentous viral particle containing a single stranded, negative RNA. It causes extreme fatal hemorrhagic fever in both humans and non-humans. It is mainly found in Africa. Transmission of EVD occurs primarily through contact with infected body fluids. It causes immune suppression that eventually leads to multiple organ failure due to the proliferation. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified the 2013-2016 outbreak and after the current Ebola outbreak on August 1, 2018 in Dominican Republic of Congo (DRC), the …

Modern American Hategroups, Alexander B. Stohler Oct 2020

Modern American Hategroups, Alexander B. Stohler

Kean Quest

I focused my research on modern, American hate groups. I found some criteria for early warning signs of antisemitic, bigoted and genocidal activities. I included a summary of neo-Nazi and white supremacy groups in modern American and then moved to a more specific focus on contemporary and prominent groups like Atomwaffen Division, the Proud Boys, the Vinlanders Social Club, the Base, Rise Against Movement, the Hammerskins, and other prominent antisemitic and hate-driven groups. Trends of hate-speech, acts of vandalism and acts of violence within the past fifty years were examined. Also, how law enforcement and the legal system has responded …

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Genes And Genetic Interactions That Influence Iba Metabolism, Vanessica Jawahir Oct 2020

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Genes And Genetic Interactions That Influence Iba Metabolism, Vanessica Jawahir

Dissertations

Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) is an endogenous storage auxin important for maintaining appropriate indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) levels that influences primary root elongation and lateral root development. IBA is metabolized into free IAA in the peroxisome in a multistep process similar to fatty acid β-oxidation. Although many components specific to IBA metabolism and peroxisome function have been identified, our understanding is incomplete. I sought to identify novel components of IBA metabolism or peroxisome function by conducting a forward genetic screen for Arabidopsis thaliana plants with enhanced resistance to IBA. I identified Long chain acyl-CoA synthetase 4 (LACS4) as a novel gene functioning …

Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center Faculty Publications

All around the world, intestinal helminths constitute one of the most prevalent life-long occurring infections and re-infections affecting all horse age groups. A range of parasite species among strongyles, ascarids, and tapeworms is known to have the potential to cause colic in horses. However, there is a lack of current scientific evidence on the actual relevance of helminth infection levels in the context of colic in horses kept during prevailing epidemiological conditions. Thus, a prospective case-control study on the occurrence of intestinal helminths in a total of 620 mainly adult equine clinic patients was conducted to investigate the association between …

Missing The Role Of Property In The Regulation Of Insider Trading, Kevin R. Douglas Oct 2020

Missing The Role Of Property In The Regulation Of Insider Trading, Kevin R. Douglas

Catholic University Law Review

For decades, legal scholars have evaluated the law and practice of insider trading through a property lens. Some have debated whether a property rationale is useful for explaining past cases or might make a useful framework for deciding tough cases in the future. Others have explored which market actors should be allocated property rights in inside information in order to increase the efficiency or liquidity of U.S. securities markets. Yet scholars seem to have missed the fact that officials have consistently relied on the violation of some party’s property rights to justify imposing liability for insider trading—including in classical theory …

Meaning, Biology And Identity: The Rights Of Children, Anika Smith Oct 2020

Meaning, Biology And Identity: The Rights Of Children, Anika Smith

Catholic University Law Review

Sperm and egg donation in the United States is only loosely regulated, and the current regime privileges the anonymity of the adult donor over the child’s right to identity. The majority of people conceived through anonymous donation do not support the practice but find their rights abrogated by contracts made by their intentional and biological parents. Donor reliance on the anonymity guaranteed by those contracts is shifting as at-home genetic testing limits their expectation of privacy, with more biological ties being discovered by children conceived through gamete donation. This Comment explores the child’s right to identity in family law cases, …

Stochastic Resonance Reduces Sway And Gait Variability In Individuals With Unilateral Transtibial Amputation: A Pilot Study, Aaron Likens, Jenny A. Kent, C. Ian Sloan, Shane R. Wurdeman, Nicholas Stergiou

Journal Articles

Sub-threshold (imperceptible) vibration, applied to parts of the body, impacts how people move and perceive our world. Could this idea help someone who has lost part of their limb? Sub-threshold vibration was applied to the thigh of the affected limb of 20 people with unilateral transtibial amputation. Vibration conditions tested included two noise structures: pink and white. Center of pressure (COP) excursion (range and root-mean-square displacements) during quiet standing, and speed and spatial stride measures (mean and standard deviations of step length and width) during walking were assessed. Pink noise vibration decreased COP displacements in standing, and white noise vibration …

Welcome to the summary of my M.A. thesis website, DichotomyofFan.com, whose full title is, as you saw on the previous page, Dichotomy of Fan: A Snapshot of Interaction, Participation, and Belonging in Modern Fandom Culture. As I believe it would be a bit much to dump everything on the site—there are 15 interviews and that’s only one section—into this summary, I’ll be including a preview of each main section of the project. Speaking of, there are a lot of ways I can (and have) introduced this project to people. Instead of the default Surprised-Pikachu-meme-How-Do-I-Even-Explain-This awkward pause, allow me to use …

The Fgf8 Subfamily (Fgf8, Fgf17 And Fgf18) Is Required For Closure Of The Embryonic Ventral Body Wall, Michael Boylan, Matthew J Anderson, David M Ornitz, Mark Lewandoski

Open Access Publications

The closure of the embryonic ventral body wall in amniotes is an important morphogenetic event and is essential for life. Defects in human ventral wall closure are a major class of birth defect and a significant health burden. Despite this, very little is understood about how the ventral body wall is formed. Here, we show that fibroblast growth factor (FGF) ligands FGF8, FGF17 and FGF18 are essential for this process. Conditional mouse mutants for these genes display subtle migratory defects in the abdominal muscles of the ventral body wall and an enlarged umbilical ring, through which the internal organs are …

Macrophage-Associated Lipin-1 Promotes Β-Oxidation In Response To Proresolving Stimuli, Robert M Schilke, Cassidy M R Blackburn, Shashanka Rao, David M Krzywanski, Brian N Finck, Matthew D Woolard Oct 2020

Macrophage-Associated Lipin-1 Promotes Β-Oxidation In Response To Proresolving Stimuli, Robert M Schilke, Cassidy M R Blackburn, Shashanka Rao, David M Krzywanski, Brian N Finck, Matthew D Woolard

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Macrophages reprogram their metabolism to promote appropriate responses. Proresolving macrophages primarily use fatty acid oxidation as an energy source. Metabolites generated during the catabolism of fatty acids aid in the resolution of inflammation and tissue repair, but the regulatory mechanisms that control lipid metabolism in macrophages are not fully elucidated. Lipin-1, a phosphatidic acid phosphatase that has transcriptional coregulator activity, regulates lipid metabolism in a variety of cells. In this current study, we show that lipin-1 is required for increased oxidative phosphorylation in IL-4 stimulated mouse (

Ephemera(L) Geopolitics: The Material Cultures Of British Military Recruitment, Mf Rech Oct 2020

Ephemera(L) Geopolitics: The Material Cultures Of British Military Recruitment, Mf Rech

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper explores contemporary cultures of British military recruitment and considers the domestication of geopolitics as matters of the ephemeral (fleeting, sensory encounters), and of ephemera (everyday objects). It employs an auto/ethnographic approach toward spaces critical to recruitment–the airshow, the home and the body. Three central contributions are developed: first, building on a recent turn to the material in political geography, the paper argues that taking seriously materiality, objects, and ‘stuff’ enhances our understanding of the connections between geopolitical, militarised and everyday; second, deploying a notion of the geopolitical social, it explores the geopolitical as it is situated in everyday …
