How Distinctive Should Catholic Law Schools Be?, Robert K. Vischer
How Distinctive Should Catholic Law Schools Be?, Robert K. Vischer
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
I was a teenager in the 1980s, and I was raised in evangelical Christian circles through which I was encouraged to listen to “Christian” rock music, not secular, which sometimes gave rise to some casuistic line drawing:
• Does U2 count as Christian? Yes, because of that line in Sunday Bloody Sunday about the victory Jesus won!
• How about Bob Dylan? Yes, but only during his three-album “born again” period!
• Amy Grant? Definitely, but even after she crossed over into the secular Top 40?
• Does the song need to mention Jesus? What if it mentions Jesus …
Reflections On A More "Catholic" Catholic Legal Education, William Michael Treanor
Reflections On A More "Catholic" Catholic Legal Education, William Michael Treanor
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
I am grateful to Professors Breen and Strang for their thoughtful book about Catholic legal education in the United States. It is an important topic, and their work promises to be a significant contribution to the conversation about the mission of Catholic law schools. My reflections here will focus on Chapter Five.
All of us participating in this symposium are engaged in the collective enterprise of thinking through and implementing what it means to be a Catholic law school. As a historian, personally I am well aware of the value of studying where we have been as part of …

I am very pleased to have an opportunity to offer some reflections on the manuscript for A Light Unseen by Professors John Breen and Lee Strang. It is an extraordinarily comprehensive look at the history of Catholic law schools in the United States. That aspect of the work alone makes it an important contribution to the scholarship on Catholic higher education in this country, and I am sure it will become an essential resource for scholars and educators across a wide range of fields. Nevertheless, A Light Unseen is much more than a history. It also raises a critical …
Teaching Jurisprudence In A Catholic Law School, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski
Teaching Jurisprudence In A Catholic Law School, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
Jurisprudence plays an important role in John Breen and Lee Strang’s history of Catholic legal education and in their prescription for its future. Legal philosophy in general, and the natural law tradition in particular, provide a central justification for the existence of distinctive Catholic law schools. They are right to argue so. As part of the broader Catholic intellectual tradition, which emphasizes the unity of knowledge and the eternal significance of mundane practice, natural law philosophy rejects mere vocationalism. It can provide the animating form and direction of a legal education that is more than one damn thing after …
Persons And The Point Of The Law, Richard W. Garnett
Persons And The Point Of The Law, Richard W. Garnett

(Excerpt)
I interviewed for a law-teaching position at Notre Dame Law School in the Fall of 1997. So far as I know, that visit to Our Lady’s university and to lovely, cosmopolitan South Bend, Indiana, was my first. I had never attended a Catholic school at any level and was not much of a Fighting Irish fan. The circumstances and conversations that resulted in my being on campus for that interview were both unpredicted and unpredictable, although I know now they were providential.
In any event, what struck me most forcefully over that weekend—besides the freezing rain that persisted throughout …

Reflections On Breen & Strang's A Light Unseen: A History Of Catholic Legal Education In The United States, Angela C. Carmella
Journal of Catholic Legal Studies
(Excerpt)
In A Light Unseen: A History of Catholic Legal Education in the United States, Professor John Breen and Professor Lee Strang have undertaken a monumental task and have produced an impressive book, particularly with respect to the fascinating history of the development of Catholic legal education. They provide a thoughtful consideration of how Catholic law schools can be more distinctively Catholic and make a strong case for the critical need for more explicit curricular and scholarly integration of the Catholic intellectual tradition. In this Essay, I make suggestions in three areas: (1) on the record regarding failed efforts …

(Excerpt)
A Light Unseen is an incredibly important work of scholarship that has given me an opportunity to be introspective, to give order to what perhaps has been too intuitive, and to be inspired to think about how to better define, pursue, and measure progress in achieving the mission of being a Catholic law school.

The process by which the impact or quality of an article is assessed by counting the number of times other works mention it in their work can be defined as citation analysis. It involves counting the number of times an article is cited by other works to measure the impact of a publication or an author. The technique of citation analysis is effective and easier among all other technique of Bibliometrics to know the trend of research in a particular field, to know the preference of scholars for various forms of information resources. The present study is conducted in order …

Poly(Homopiperazine−Amide) Thin-Film Composite Membrane For Nanofiltration Of Heavy Metal Ions, Syed Ibrahim, Mahdi Mohammadi Ghaleni, Mona Bavarian
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
The development of membrane-based technologies for the treatment of wastewater streams and resources containing heavy metal ions is in high demand. Among various technologies, nanofiltration (NF) membranes are attractive choices, and the continuous development of novel materials to improve the state-ofthe- art NF membranes is highly desired. Here, we report on the synthesis of poly(homopiperazine−amide) thin-film composite (HTFC)-NF membranes, using homopiperazine (HP) as a monomer. The surface charge, hydrophilicity, morphology, crosslinking density, water permeation, solute rejection, and antifouling properties of the fabricated NF membranes were evaluated. The fabricated HTFC NF membranes demonstrated water permeability of 7.0 ± 0.3 L/(m2 …

Curie Temperature Engineering In A Novel 2d Analog Of Iron Ore (Hematene) Via Strain, Renu Singla, Timothy A. Hackett, Sarvesh Kumar, Jyotsna Sharma, Manish K. Kashyap
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
As a newly exfoliated magnetic 2D material from hematite, hematene is the most far-reaching ultrathin magnetic indirect bandgap semiconductor. We have carried out a detailed structural analysis of hematene via prefacing strain by means of first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Hematene in the pristine form emerges out to be a magnetic semiconductor with a bandgap of 1.0/2.0 eV for the majority/minority spin channel. The dependence of magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE), TC, and the bandgap on compressive and tensile strains has been scanned exclusively. It is examined that TC depends firmly on the compressive strain …

We have previously demonstrated hippocampal hyperglutamatergic signaling occurs prior to plaque accumulation in AβPP/PS1 mice. Here, we evaluate 2-Amino-6-(trifluoromethoxy) benzothiazole (riluzole) as an early intervention strategy for Alzheimer's disease (AD), aimed at restoring glutamate neurotransmission prior to substantial Beta amyloid (Aβ) plaque accumulation and cognitive decline. Male AβPP/PS1 mice, a model of progressive cerebral amyloidosis, were treated with riluzole from 2-6 months of age. Morris water maze, in vivo electrochemistry, and immunofluorescence were performed to assess cognition, glutamatergic neurotransmission, and pathology, respectively, at 12 months. Four months of prodromal riluzole treatment in AβPP/PS1 mice resulted in long-lasting procognitive effects and …

Inheritability Of Ciprofloxacin-Induced Mitochondrial Mutations From Parental To Offspring Generation Using Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction, Rose Mccoy
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In all eukaryotes, mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell (Siekevitz, 1957). In plants, however, their mitochondrial genome is especially strange. Plant mitochondrial genomes are extremely large and contain both linear and circular subgenomic DNA fragments. Plant mitochondrial genomes undergo a significant amount of mutations in the form of rearrangements. However, it is not known how often these rearrangements are inherited by the next generation. It is thought that plant cells that are still dividing have higher rates of DNA repair, such as double-strand break repair, to ensure the quality of that plant lineage. As follows, it is …
Anthropogenic Change On The Distribution Of Marine Megafauna And Their Prey, Baylie Fadool
Anthropogenic Change On The Distribution Of Marine Megafauna And Their Prey, Baylie Fadool
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Anthropogenic change is impacting the distribution and survival of marine megafauna and their prey. Humans are changing every aspect of the marine environment, with effects reaching as large as changing the composition of marine environments to directly overexploiting species through the fishing industry. The role that marine megafauna play in balancing ecosystems, including as top apex predators, leads to detrimental results in the absences and population declines of these species. Migrations and declines due to threats on marine apex predator species will alter their environments by causing mesopredator release and changes in community structure, which is often associated with reduced …

Designing A Week-Long Biomedical Engineering Summer Camp To Increase Young Students’ Interest And Self-Efficacy In Stem, Kayla Ney
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In order to combat the negative feelings many young students have towards STEM, I designed a week-long summer camp that teaches students about biomedical engineering as well as collaboration, communication, and confidence with STEM subjects. This work includes a literature review outlining what STEM is and current issues in STEM education, including disinterest in STEM and attrition in STEM degree programs. The literature review outlines current methods and ideas being utilized to combat these issues, namely, inclusive pedagogical strategies, and how some of these concepts can be applied to the summer camp. The curriculum document included outlines each activity, its …
Two Journeys Of The Spirit: Comparing Plato's Republic And Ibn Tufayl's Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, Zeina Abdallah Jehama
Two Journeys Of The Spirit: Comparing Plato's Republic And Ibn Tufayl's Hayy Ibn Yaqzan, Zeina Abdallah Jehama
Theses and Dissertations
Both Plato’s Republic and Ibn Tufayl’s Hayy Ibn Yaqzan explain to the reader how a spiritual journey can bring about an understanding of the Divine. However, both works also show us that the spiritual journey depends on an inquiry into the nature of the human soul as it engages in the process of learning. In the first chapter of the thesis, Plato’s Republic is explored, particularly in terms of the Allegory of the Cave, which suggests how the notion the Divine goes beyond everyday life experience. In the second chapter, Hayy Ibn Yaqzan is presented as a spiritual narrative that …

Feeding Specificity Of The Photosynthetic Sacoglossan Sea Slug Elysia Papillosa, Kourtney Sui Barber
Feeding Specificity Of The Photosynthetic Sacoglossan Sea Slug Elysia Papillosa, Kourtney Sui Barber
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The sacoglossan sea slug, Elysia papillosa is associated with two species of the siphonaceous green alga, Penicillus, which co-occur in mixed macrophyte beds at Tarpon Springs, FL, USA. Field collections revealed that Elysia papillosa is frequently collected from the alga, P. capitatus, but is also present in much lower abundance on P. lamourouxii. Past studies have shown that some species of sacoglossans consume algal species that differ from the algae from which they are collected so, in order to determine whether E. papillosa was consuming either or both species of Penicillus, total DNA was extracted from individual slugs collected from …
