Distribution Of Crickets (Subfamily: Phalangopsinae) In Caves Of Baratang Island, Andaman And Nicobar Islands, India, Amruta Dhamorikar, Dhanusha Kawalkar, Shirish Manchi
International Journal of Speleology
Cave-dwelling organisms share different ecological and evolutionary relationships with caves. Based on these interactions, they are categorized as troglobites, troglophiles, and trogloxenes. In India, caves are meagerly explored, and thus cave study is in its infancy in India. Through the present study, we attempted to understand and model the distribution of crickets (Family Phalangopsidae), a critical group of insects - being the primary consumers in the cave ecosystems. We sampled seven caves using belt transects (N = 184; total area covered = 1294.9 m2) with 1 m width. During the survey, we encountered 818 individual crickets (116.85 ± …

Meat-Eating Justification And Relationship Closeness With Vegetarian Family, Friends, And Romantic Partners, Amy D. Vandehei
Meat-Eating Justification And Relationship Closeness With Vegetarian Family, Friends, And Romantic Partners, Amy D. Vandehei
Walden University Research Conference
Vegetarians/vegans report negative reactions upon disclosing their diets. Meat-eating justification beliefs were hypothesized to relate to negative responses and relationship closeness. Surveys were completed by 190 omnivores (who had vegetarian/vegan relationships). Results showed that denial and dissociation justifications significantly predicted lower closeness. Hierarchical justification significantly predicted higher closeness. Results showed significantly higher closeness (frequency, diversity) before diet change. Strength of influence significantly increased after diet change. A significant interaction showed frequency was significantly lower after diet change for friends and family members, but significantly higher for romantic relationships. The findings may aid in developing therapeutic interventions leading to strengthened relationships. …

Effect Of Ceratonia Siliqua And Cucurbita Pepo Seeds Extracts On Spermatogenesis In Male Mice, Nour Elakhdar, Roweida Bawab, Jamilah Borjac
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
Worldwide, a percentage close to 50% of infertility cases is due to male-related problems including spermatogenesis defects, the process that determines sperm cells’ number and thus male fertility. Spermatogenesis is controlled by different hormones including the luteinizing hormone (LH), the follicle stimulation hormone (FSH), and testosterone. LH stimulates the Leydig cells to synthesize testosterone. FSH acts synergistically with testosterone. There is no current efficient treatment for spermatogenesis defects and people are reverting to natural remedies among which are the pumpkin and carob seeds. This study aims to evaluate the effects of pumpkin and carob seeds’ aqueous extracts on spermatogenesis and …

The urgency to develop a vaccine against the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) has waxed stronger in speed, scale, and scope. However, wisdom dictates that we take a vantage position and start to examine the demographic predictors of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. The objective of this study was to examine the role of health locus of control (HLOC) in the relationship between religiosity and COVID-19 vaccination intention. In a cross-sectional survey (N = 501), we found a significantly negative association between religiosity and COVID-19 vaccination intention. This relationship was partially mediated by external HLOC. Collaborative efforts with religious institutions may influence COVID-19 vaccine …

The Genus Ochodaeus In Italy: Taxonomy And Distribution (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Ochodaeidae), Stefano Ziani
Insecta Mundi
The author provides a taxonomic, nomenclatural and distributional review of the genus Ochodaeus Dejean, 1821 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Ochodaeidae) in Italy. All Italian populations have been confirmed to belong to a single species, O. chrysomeloides (Schrank, 1781). After the study of a syntype, O. cychramoides Reitter, 1892, formerly considered an Italian endemic, is confirmed to be a junior synonym of O. chrysomeloides. Type material of O. chrysomeloides is believed to be destroyed, therefore a neotype is here designated and deposited at the Natural History Museum of Vienna, Austria. A lectotype is here designated for O. cychramoides and deposited in the Hungarian …

The study of long-lived and regenerative animal models has revealed diverse protective responses to stressors such as aging and tissue injury. Spiny mice (Acomys) are a unique mammalian model of skin wound regeneration, but their response to other types of physiological skin damage has not been investigated. In this study, we examine how spiny mouse skin responds to acute UVB damage or chronological aging compared to non-regenerative C57Bl/6 mice (M. musculus). We find that, compared to M. musculus, the skin epidermis in A. cahirinus experiences a similar UVB-induced increase in basal cell …
Patterning A Leaf By Establishing Polarities, Darren Manuela, Mingli Xu
Patterning A Leaf By Establishing Polarities, Darren Manuela, Mingli Xu
Faculty Publications
Leaves are the major organ for photosynthesis in most land plants, and leaf structure is optimized for the maximum capture of sunlight and gas exchange. Three polarity axes, the adaxial–abaxial axis, the proximal-distal axis, and the medial-lateral axis are established during leaf development to give rise to a flattened lamina with a large area for photosynthesis and blades that are extended on petioles for maximum sunlight. Adaxial cells are elongated, tightly packed cells with many chloroplasts, and their fate is specified by HD-ZIP III and related factors. Abaxial cells are rounder and loosely packed cells and their fate is established …
Spatial Stereo Sound Source Localization Optimization And Cnn Based Source Feature Recognition, Cong Xu
Spatial Stereo Sound Source Localization Optimization And Cnn Based Source Feature Recognition, Cong Xu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the process of propagating as a carrier of information in space, in addition to transmitting the information itself, the acoustic signal also contains the position information of the sound source itself and its related physical characteristics. Acoustic signal uses the medium (such as air, water, steel, etc.) in the space to transmit mechanical vibration and longitudinal waves from the sound source to the outside world. The traditional single audio collection device cannot collect position information and sound source characteristic information. Therefore, the signals processed in the audio signal processing process are all mixed source acoustic signals after spatial reverberation. …

Meir’s (2010) Double Mapping Constraint (DMC) states the use of iconic signs in metaphors is restricted to signs that preserve the structural correspondence between the articulators and the concrete source domain and between the concrete and metaphorical domains. We investigated ASL signers’ comprehension of English metaphors whose translations complied with the DMC (Communication collapsed during the meeting) or violated the DMC (The acid ate the metal). Metaphors were preceded by the ASL translation of the English verb, an unrelated sign, or a still video. Participants made sensibility judgments. Response times (RTs) were faster for DMC-Compliant sentences …

Assessment And Integration Of Socioeconomic And Demographic Factors In The Implementation Of Integrated Water Resources Management In The Lake Chad Basin, Nodjidoumde Mbaigoto
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Most developing countries have responded to the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) call to implement Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in their national water policy to reach water sustainability and socioeconomic welfare. Despite the Lake Chad Basin Commission's adoption of the IWRM principles, the basin experiences a massive humanitarian crisis driven by the lake's shrinkage, the water shortage for food production, the rapid population growth, and the terrorist attacks perpetrated by Boko Haram. This study sought to assess the socioeconomic and demographic status of people living upstream of Lake Chad in order to understand the challenges associated with …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a multifactorial, age-related neurological disease characterized by complex pathophysiological dynamics taking place at multiple biological levels, including molecular, genetic, epigenetic, cellular and large-scale brain networks. These alterations account for multiple pathophysiological mechanisms such as brain protein accumulation, neuroinflammatory/neuro-immune processes, synaptic dysfunction, and neurodegeneration that eventually lead to cognitive and behavioral decline. Alterations in microRNA (miRNA) signaling have been implicated in the epigenetics and molecular genetics of all neurobiological processes associated with AD pathophysiology. These changes encompass altered miRNA abundance, speciation and complexity in anatomical regions of the CNS targeted by the disease, including modified miRNA expression …

Indonesian Journal of Public Health Nutrition (IJPHN)
Poor complementary feeding practices can lead to malnutrition in infants and young children. Minimum dietary diversity (MDD) is one of the determinants of children’s nutritional status and has been found to predict stunting. This study examined factors associated with MDD achievement among breastfed children aged 6-23 months based on Indonesia’s Demographic and Health Survey 2017. This study used chi-square and multiple logistic regression to analyze the data. Among 2,976 children only around 53% children met MDD recommendation. Multivariate analysis found that the diversity of diet is better among older children than younger children. Children aged 18-23 months have possibility of …

A late Middle Pleistocene mandible from Baishiya Karst Cave (BKC) on the Tibetan Plateau has been inferred to be from a Denisovan, an Asian hominin related to Neanderthals, on the basis of an amino acid substitution in its collagen. Here we describe the stratigraphy, chronology, and mitochondrial DNA extracted from the sediments in BKC. We recover Denisovan mitochondrial DNA from sediments deposited ~100 thousand and ~60 thousand years ago (ka) and possibly as recently as ~45 ka. The long-term occupation of BKC by Denisovans suggests that they may have adapted to life at high altitudes and may have contributed such …

Novel effective treatment is direly needed for patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Therapeutics that target the driver mutations, especially the KRAS oncoprotein and its effector cascades, have been ineffective. It is increasing clear that the extensive fibro-inflammatory stroma (or desmoplasia) of PDAC plays an active role in the progression and therapeutic resistance of PDAC. The desmoplastic stroma is composed of dense extracellular matrix (ECM) deposited mainly by the cancer-associated-fibroblasts (CAFs) and infiltrated with various types of immune cells. The dense ECM functions as a physical barrier that limits tumor vasculatures and distribution of therapeutics to PDAC cells. In addition, …

Cob is a vernacular raw earth building technique common in Europe and especially in the north-west of France and the south-west of England (Figure 1). This mixture of often siltyclayey soils and plant fibres used in a plastic state, generally with the help of simple tools and without formwork, made it possible to build the thick load-bearing walls of thousands of buildings. Apart from the archaeological remains from Roman, Gaulish and medieval times, most of the present heritage was built between the 16th and 19th centuries. This technique, along with other earth materials was subsequently abandoned in favour of industrial …

In An Intersectional Critique of Tiers of Scrutiny, Professors Devon Carbado and Kimberlé Crenshaw infuse affirmative action with an overdue dose of intersectionality theory. Their intervention, which highlights the disfavored remedial status of Black women, exposes equality law as an unmarked intersectional project that “privileges the intersectional identities of white antidiscrimination claimants.”
This latent racial privilege rests on two doctrinal pillars. First, single-axis tiers of scrutiny, which force claimants and courts to view discrimination in either/or terms (that is, race-based or gender-based or class-based), contravene intersectionality’s core insight that “people live their lives co-constitutively as ‘both/and,’ rather than fragmentarily …
