Comparisons of mammalian gut microbiota across different environmental conditions shed light on the diversity and composition of gut bacteriome and suggest consequences for human and animal health. Gut bacteriome comparisons across different environments diverge in their results, showing no generalizable patterns linking habitat and dietary degradation with bacterial diversity. The challenge in drawing general conclusions from such studies lies in the broad terms describing diverse habitats (“wild”, “captive”, “pristine”). We conducted 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing to characterize intestinal microbiota of free-ranging sympatric chimpanzees and gorillas in southeastern Cameroon and sympatric chimpanzees and gorillas in a European zoo. We conducted …

Functional Review And Macrostructure Of The Caecum In Ardeidae, Lola R. Mildren Nov 2020

Functional Review And Macrostructure Of The Caecum In Ardeidae, Lola R. Mildren

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Situated on the lower digestive tract, caeca typically project cranially from the juncture of the small and large intestine. Recent studies have proposed that the role of caeca in the avian system is to act as fermentation chambers to synthesize vitamins, modulate gut microflora, and absorb nutrients; however, functionality differs with diet. Caeca are a typical characteristic of the avian gastrointestinal tract, with varying sizes and shapes, or even rudimentary or absent in some species. Caeca are notably singular and relatively small in Ardeids. Morphometric consistency in the number and presence of caeca on the lower intestinal tract of Ardeids …

This compendium summarizes regional information on promising practices, emerging practices, and case studies that form part of the response of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its partners to the needs of refugees, internally displaced persons, and host communities in the East and Horn of Africa and Great Lakes region. Documentation of these practices fosters south-south and global exchange, learning, and capacity-building, while inspiring UNHCR and its partner program developers and implementers with fresh ideas for resolving common challenges. The global COVID-19 pandemic makes this compendium even more critical at this time, as operations grapple with meeting …

Regulation Of Mpcs And Kat8 During Adipogenesis And Nutritional Regulation, Jasmine Burrell Nov 2020

Regulation Of Mpcs And Kat8 During Adipogenesis And Nutritional Regulation, Jasmine Burrell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Obesity is a global epidemic characterized by an expansion of adipose tissue. Adipose tissue, composed of adipocytes and a stromal vascular fraction, is an endocrine organ that regulates whole body homeostasis. Obesity leads to the dysregulation of adipocytes and is often associated with increased susceptibility to metabolic diseases such as Type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Understanding the mechanisms by which adipocyte function and development are regulated is crucial. Mitochondrial pyruvate carriers (MPCs) are transmembrane proteins that transport pyruvate from the cytosol into the mitochondrial matrix to generate acetyl CoA. Although MPCs have been studied extensively, their roles in adipocytes are …

Fabrication and optimization of conductive scaffolds capable of inducing proper intercellular connections through electrical signals is critical for neural tissue engineering. In this research, electrospun conductive PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol)/PEDOT(poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)) scaffolds were fabricated in different compositions. Conductivity of electrospinning solutions and electrospun scaffolds were measured. Morphology and topography, mechanical properties and water contact angle of scaffolds were analyzed. Chemistry of scaffolds were studied using FTIR analysis, while biocompatibility and cellular interactions with scaffolds were tested using MTT assay and cellular attachment and spreading testing. Our results show improvements in PEDOT-containing scaffolds, in terms of physiochemical properties, and cell viability compared to …

Every year millions of people die due to fatal waterborne diseases around the world especially in developing countries like India. Sikkim, a northeastern state of India, greatly depends on natural water sources. About 80% of the population of Sikkim depends on natural spring water for domestic as well as agricultural use. Recent waterborne disease outbreaks in the state raises a concerning question on water quality. In this study, we analyzed water quality especially for the detection of Enterobacteriaceae members from four districts of the state. Isolation with selective culture media techniques and taxonomic characterization of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria with 16S rRNA …

White Matter Plasticity In Anxiety: Disruption Of Neural Network Synchronization During Threat-Safety Discrimination, Jia Liu, Ekaterina Likhti, A. Duke Shereen, Tracy A. Dennis-Tiwary, Patricia Casaccia

Advanced Science Research Center

Recent evidence highlighted the importance of white matter tracts in typical and atypical behaviors. White matter dynamically changes in response to learning, stress, and social experiences. Several lines of evidence have reported white matter dysfunction in psychiatric conditions, including depression, stress- and anxiety-related disorders. The mechanistic underpinnings of these associations, however, remain poorly understood. Here, we outline an integrative perspective positing a link between aberrant myelin plasticity and anxiety. Drawing on extant literature and emerging new findings, we suggest that in anxiety, unique changes may occur in response to threat and to safety learning and the ability to discriminate between …

Jaguars And Roads In The Calakmul Region, Evidence Of Road Crossing And Collisions With Vehicles, Edwin L. Hernández-Pérez, Joaquín López Sosa, Diana Friedeberg, Fernando M. Contreras-Moreno, Mircea G. Hidalgo-Mihart

Western North American Naturalist

Jaguars (Panthera onca) suffer from the negative effects of roads, mostly significant habitat fragmentation and increased risk of mortality due to vehicle collisions. In Mexico records of jaguars killed on roads are scarce and mostly anecdotal. The Calakmul-Balam-Kú jaguar population is the most important jaguar population in Mexico, but it is threatened by an extensive road network in which Federal Highway 186 Escárcega–Chetumal (hereafter called Hwy. 186) serves as the main road in the region. As part of a study to determine the diversity and abundance of medium- and large-sized mammals around Hwy. 186, we set 47 camera …

Tobacco Hornworm (Manduca Sexta) Oral Secretion Elicits Reactive Oxygen Species In Isolated Tomato Protoplasts, Akanksha Gandhi, Rupesh R. Kariyat, Cruz Chappa, Mandeep Tayal, Nirakar Sahoo

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Plants are under constant attack by a suite of insect herbivores. Over millions of years of coexistence, plants have evolved the ability to sense insect feeding via herbivore-associated elicitors in oral secretions, which can mobilize defense responses. However, herbivore-associated elicitors and the intrinsic downstream modulator of such interactions remain less understood. In this study, we show that tobacco hornworm caterpillar (Manduca sexta) oral secretion (OS) induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) protoplasts. By using a dye-based ROS imaging approach, our study shows that application of plant-fed (PF) M. sexta OS generates significantly higher ROS while artificial diet-fed …

Although TP53 is the most commonly mutated gene in human cancers, the p53-dependent transcriptional programs mediating tumor suppression remain incompletely understood. Here, to uncover critical components downstream of p53 in tumor suppression, we perform unbiased RNAi and CRISPR-Cas9-based genetic screens in vivo. These screens converge upon the p53-inducible gene Zmat3, encoding an RNA-binding protein, and we demonstrate that ZMAT3 is an important tumor suppressor downstream of p53 in mouse Kras

Barnacle Geese And Sky Burials: Relativism In The Travels Of Sir John Mandeville, Akasha L. Khalsa Nov 2020

Barnacle Geese And Sky Burials: Relativism In The Travels Of Sir John Mandeville, Akasha L. Khalsa

Conspectus Borealis

As a medieval travel narrative, The Travels of Sir John Mandeville was immensely popular for everyone from bookworms to world travelers in 14th and 15th century Europe. Given its popularity, and the period in which it was produced, one might expect the fictitious travelogue to display an incredible level of intolerance towards the various peoples and cultures it depicts. However, the Travels frequently surprises modern readers with its message of tolerance towards greater humanity, and its recognition of the universality of human experience as it is mirrored in the lives of people of different ethnic and cultural groups. In order …

Evaluation Of Dental Parameters Perception By Lebanese Prosthodontists, Orthodontists And Aesthetic Doctors, Celine Kamel, Nadine Nachabé, Nada El Osta, Carina Mehanna Zogheib

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of varying smile parameters with respect to three indices between Lebanese dentists (prosthodontists and orthodontists) and medical doctors. 245 participants were divided into 3 groups. A photograph of the smile that conforms to a woman’s aesthetic standards has been digitally altered to provide a reference image. Next, images where modified then evaluated. The collected data was analyzed. Dental professionals critically judged dental aesthetics by focusing on the gingivo-dental characteristics that make the smile less pleasant. Dental professionals detected minimal dental discrepancies in a smile, unlike doctors who assessed the smile …

The Long-Term Effects Of Japan’S Traumatic Experience In The Second World War And Its Implications For Peace In Northeast Asia, Eugen Koh, Tadashi Takeshima Nov 2020

The Long-Term Effects Of Japan’S Traumatic Experience In The Second World War And Its Implications For Peace In Northeast Asia, Eugen Koh, Tadashi Takeshima

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article is an introductory report on the work of a Japanese study group whose primary aim is peacemaking, which it seeks by promoting a greater understanding of the long-term effects of their country’s traumatic experience of the Second World War. The group does not adopt a position of victimhood but seeks to understand the full picture of Japan’s role in the war, including its role as perpetrator. We came together with the shared assumption that the country’s inability to take responsibility for its role of the war is inextricably tied to its own traumatization. If this assumption is true, …
