Vulnerability Of High-Elevation Endemic Salamanders To Climate Change: A Case Study With The Cow Knob Salamander (Plethodon Punctatus), Carl D. Jacobsen, Donald J. Brown, William D. Flint, Thomas K. Pauley, Kurt A. Buhlmann, Joseph C. Mitchell Jan 2020

Vulnerability Of High-Elevation Endemic Salamanders To Climate Change: A Case Study With The Cow Knob Salamander (Plethodon Punctatus), Carl D. Jacobsen, Donald J. Brown, William D. Flint, Thomas K. Pauley, Kurt A. Buhlmann, Joseph C. Mitchell

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Rapid contemporary climate change is a potential threat to long-term persistence of montane wildlife species because they often have narrow thermal tolerances and have limited potential to shift their distributions. The Appalachian Mountain region in the eastern United States is a global biodiversity hotspot for woodland salamanders (genus Plethodon), many of which are high-elevation endemic species. Robust assessments of the vulnerability of high-elevation endemic salamanders to climate change, including delineation of future potential climate refugia, are needed to guide climate change adaptations strategies. The Cow Knob Salamander (Plethodon punctatus) is a species of conservation concern found at …

Extended breastfeeding through infancy confers benefits on neurocognitive performance and intelligence tests, though few have examined the biological basis of these effects. To investigate correlations with breastfeeding, we examined the major white matter tracts in 4–8 year-old children using diffusion tensor imaging and volumetric measurements of the corpus callosum. We found a significant correlation between the duration of infant breastfeeding and fractional anisotropy scores in left-lateralized white matter tracts, including the left superior longitudinal fasciculus and left angular bundle, which is indicative of greater intrahemispheric connectivity. However, in contrast to expectations from earlier studies, no correlations were observed with corpus …

The Transition From Planar To En Echelon Morphology In A Single Vein In Shale: Insights From X-Ray Computed Tomography Scanning, Graham Dm Andrews, Sarah R. Brown, Johnathan Moore, Dustin Crandall, Paige Mackey Jan 2020

The Transition From Planar To En Echelon Morphology In A Single Vein In Shale: Insights From X-Ray Computed Tomography Scanning, Graham Dm Andrews, Sarah R. Brown, Johnathan Moore, Dustin Crandall, Paige Mackey

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

En echelon fractures and veins are among the most common and distinctive geological structures, yet their three-dimensional forms and relationships to surrounding structures are commonly unclear. X-ray computed tomography (CT) offers an unrivaled ability to examine structures within rocks in three dimensions, and it is applied here to a sample of drill core from the Marcellus Shale of southwestern Pennsylvania (USA). CT images yield qualitative and quantitative data on the transition from a pyrite-rich planar vein to an en echelon veinlet array, and on the heterogeneity of veinlets within the array. Using a combination of three- and two-dimensional images, geometric …

Time Series Analysis Of Water Use And Indirect Reusewithin A Huc-4 Basin (Wabash) Over A Nine Year Period, M. Julia Wiener, Sebastian Moreno, Chad T. Jafvert, Loring F. Nies Jan 2020

Time Series Analysis Of Water Use And Indirect Reusewithin A Huc-4 Basin (Wabash) Over A Nine Year Period, M. Julia Wiener, Sebastian Moreno, Chad T. Jafvert, Loring F. Nies

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic water use and reuse represent major components of the water cycle. In the context of climate change, water reuse and recycling are considered necessary components for an integrated water management approach. Unplanned, or de facto, indirect water reuse occurs in most of the U.S. river systems, however, there is little real-time documentation of it. Despite the fact that there are national and state agencies that systematically collect data on water withdrawals and wastewater discharges, their databases are organized and managed in a way that makes it challenging to use them for water resource management analysis. The ability to combine …

Experiments In Materiality And Representation: The London Film-Makers' Co-Operative 1968 – 1979, Charlotte Reardon Jan 2020

Experiments In Materiality And Representation: The London Film-Makers' Co-Operative 1968 – 1979, Charlotte Reardon

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

My thesis is centered around the experimental films of the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative. Through the shared workshop spaces and the vision to defy conventional mainstream cinema, the self-led collective was influential in creating new directions of filmic techniques. Placed within a wider discourse of 1970’s experimental film, the aim of my research is to draw on the complexity of processes, narratives, and structures inherent in the Co-op films from 1968 – 1979. Through a technique-based examination, this project will focus on the shifts between abstracted and representational forms, and in turn how the dominant materialist practice began to be replaced …

Fundamental Understanding And Applications Of Nanoemulsions For Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Analysis, Shashika Gunathilaka Sabaragamuwe Jayasundarakorale

Open Access Master's Theses

We demonstrate a new electroanalytical approach for the ultrasensitive electrochemical analysis using nanoemulsions (NEs) uniquely combined with single entity electrochemistry (SEE). First, we investigate the relationship between the structure and relevant electrochemical activity of NEs. We employ SEE to elucidate the interfacial structure of NEs and their corresponding electrochemical activities, which cannot be unequivocally defined by general microscopic techniques. Throughout this work on nanostructural effect of NEs, we could optimize the most suitable composition of NEs, showing facile electron transfer kinetics across the NE interface as well as a high monodispersity. Particularly, the application of SEE for optimized NEs allowed …

Spike Frequency Adaptation In Motor Neurons And Joint Resistance In Rabbit Model Of Cerebral Palsy, Preston Steele Jan 2020

Spike Frequency Adaptation In Motor Neurons And Joint Resistance In Rabbit Model Of Cerebral Palsy, Preston Steele

Open Access Master's Theses

Cerebral palsy (CP) is caused by a variety of factors attributed to early brain damage, resulting in permanently impaired motor control, marked by weakness and muscle stiffness. To find out if altered physiology of spinal motoneurons (MNs) could contribute to movement deficits, we performed whole cell patch clamp in neonatal rabbit spinal cord slices after developmental injury at 79% gestation. After preterm hypoxia-ischemia (HI), rabbits are born with motor deficits consistent with a spastic phenotype including hypertonia and hyperreflexia. There is a range in severity, thus kits are classified as severely affected, mildly affected, or unaffected based on modified Ashworth …

Trophic Niche Overlap Of Atlantic Cod And Black Sea Bass In Relation To Warming Southern New England Waters, Nina Santos Jan 2020

Trophic Niche Overlap Of Atlantic Cod And Black Sea Bass In Relation To Warming Southern New England Waters, Nina Santos

Open Access Master's Theses

In southern New England (SNE), a new ecological interaction is occurring as temperate black sea bass abundance increases in the home range of the iconic Atlantic cod as a result of climate-induced ocean warming. In this study, we examined the diet and trophic dynamics of both SNE Atlantic cod and black sea bass using a multi-tracer approach of stomach content analysis as well as bulk and compound-specific amino acid isotope analyses. We reveal a highly selective diet (0.01-0.43 Levin’s index) with decapod crustaceans occurring in 82-89% of stomachs and making up 72-79% of the total wet weight for both species, …

Taxonomic Profiling Of Metagenomic Reads Using Deep Learning, Cecile Cres

Open Access Master's Theses

The field of metagenomics studies microbes from environmental samples in a process generating millions of short DNA sequences called reads. The final outcome is to discover the diversity as well as the function of complex microbial communities using computational tools. The general idea adopted by most taxonomic classifiers, which aim to assign taxonomic groups to individual reads, is to compare the target DNA sequences to a reference database and identify the taxon of the best match. This method has many disadvantages including the necessity for large computing resources in order to process large sequence databases. The current project aims to …

Over the past few years, the use of electronic cigarettes and other vaping related products has spiked. This has quickly become an epidemic amongst the younger generations. These people did not smoke cigarettes before but are now addicted to nicotine. In an attempt to fight off the companies that are marketing these devices to teens and young adults, various anti-vaping campaigns have been launched. Two of the most notable and prevalent campaigns are the FDA’s “The Real Cost” and the Truth Initiative’s “Truth”. Using previously tested methods, this study compares and attempts to account for the short-term effectiveness, or lack …

School of Psychology

Psychological scientists have become increasingly concerned with issues related to methodology and replicability, and infancy researchers in particular face specific challenges related to replicability: For example, high-powered studies are difficult to conduct, testing conditions vary across labs, and different labs have access to different infant populations. Addressing these concerns, we report on a large-scale, multisite study aimed at (a) assessing the overall replicability of a single theoretically important phenomenon and (b) examining methodological, cultural, and developmental moderators. We focus on infants’ preference for infant-directed speech (IDS) over adult-directed speech (ADS). Stimuli of mothers speaking to their infants and to an …

Elastic fibers (90% elastin, 10% fibrillin-rich microfibrils) are synthesized only in early life and adolescence mainly by the vascular smooth muscle cells through the cross-linking of its soluble precursor, tropoelastin. Elastic fibers endow the large elastic arteries with resilience and elasticity. Normal vascular aging is associated with arterial remodeling and stiffening, especially due to the end of production and degradation of elastic fibers, leading to altered cardiovascular function. Several pharmacological treatments stimulate the production of elastin and elastic fibers. In particular, dill extract (DE) has been demonstrated to stimulate elastin production in vitro in dermal equivalent models and in skin …

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common disorder characterized by repeated episodes of upper airways collapse during the sleep. The following intermittent hypoxia triggers a state of chronic inflammation, which also interests the nervous system leading to neuronal damage and increased risk of cognitive impairment. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a growth factor often associated with neuroplasticity and neuroprotection whose levels increase in several condition associated with neuronal damage. However, whether patients affected by OSAS have altered BDNF levels and whether such alteration may be reflective of their cognitive impairment is still controversial. Here we show that, when …

BACKGROUND: The development of conotruncal heart defects (CTDs) involves a complex relationship among genetic variants and maternal lifestyle factors. In this article, we focused on the interactions between 13 candidate genes within folate, homocysteine, and transsulfuration pathways for potential association with CTD risk.

METHODS: Targeted sequencing was used for 328 case-parental triads enrolled in the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS). To evaluate the interaction of two genes, we applied a conditional logistic regression model for all possible SNP pairs within two respective genes by contrasting the affected infants with their pseudo-controls. The findings were replicated in an independent sample …

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) are key regulators of tissue development, homeostasis and repair, and abnormal FGF signalling is associated with various human diseases. In human and murine epidermis, FGF receptor 3 (FGFR3) activation causes benign skin tumours, but the consequences of FGFR3 deficiency in this tissue have not been determined. Here, we show that FGFR3 in keratinocytes is dispensable for mouse skin development, homeostasis and wound repair. However, the defect in the epidermal barrier and the resulting inflammatory skin disease that develops in mice lacking FGFR1 and FGFR2 in keratinocytes were further aggravated upon additional loss of FGFR3. This caused …
