Science And Spirituality As Applied To Od: The Unique Christian Science Perspective: A Qualitative Research Study, Charlotte Booth
Science And Spirituality As Applied To Od: The Unique Christian Science Perspective: A Qualitative Research Study, Charlotte Booth
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study researched Christian Science principles, a blended approach of science and spirituality, and their relevance and contribution to the field of Organization Development. Data was gathered as to whether or not Christian Science principles should be considered a resource for handling business challenges. The 14 individuals who participated in this study were asked 15 questions that correlated to the primary three research questions. Participant's answers were collected and coded in order to analyze and determine reoccurring and prominent points in the data. The study found that some current OD methods and tools are similar in context to Christian …
How Does Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing (Emdr) Work? An Examination Of The Potential Mechanisms Of Action, Sara Forster
How Does Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing (Emdr) Work? An Examination Of The Potential Mechanisms Of Action, Sara Forster
Theses and Dissertations
A mounting body of evidence suggests that Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is successful in reducing the impact of posttraumatic symptoms. Although the exact mechanisms of action remain unknown, theories from the psychological to the neuroscientific continue to emerge, expand, and evolve. This study will examine four of the most prominent theories to date and weigh the evidence for and against each one. It will also review, compare, and contrast the theories, evaluate the research supporting each one, and propose the most likely explanation for EMDR's success given the state of the research. Neurobiological mechanisms and correlates as …

Understanding Gender Roles In The Workplace: A Qualitative Research Study, Andrea Michel
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explored female leaders' experiences with gender norms, implicit bias and microaggressions that they have experienced over the course of their careers. Research questions explored what gender norms exist, how they show up behaviorally in the workplace, and how gender norms, implicit bias and microaggressions impact women. 12 women participated in the study and were asked 12 interview questions. Participants' answers to these questions were coded to highlight themes. Themes were identified as communication diplomacy, leadership style, family commitments, physical appearance, and pink roles for data analysis. Key themes were summarized, and key research findings were discussed. Key …
Assessing The Impacts Of Work-Related Applications Of Improvisation Training On Psychological Safety In Teams, Marne Maykowskyj Nordean
Assessing The Impacts Of Work-Related Applications Of Improvisation Training On Psychological Safety In Teams, Marne Maykowskyj Nordean
Theses and Dissertations
This paper discusses improvisational training (IMPT) and psychological safety and seeks to find if the former impacts the latter. For this study, improvisation has four main tenets: ensemble / co-creating, 'yes, and' / accept and heighten, authenticity / celebrating failure, and listening and communication skills. Psychological safety is defined as the shared belief held by members of a team that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking and a sense of confidence that the team will not embarrass, reject or punish someone for speaking up. This confidence stems from mutual respect and trust among team members. It is described as …

One Welfare, The Role Of Health Professionals, And Climate Change, Anne Fawcett
Animal Sentience
Wiebers & Feigin argue that the COVID-19 crisis is a call for humanity to rethink our relationships with animals and the environment. This One Welfare approach has implications for the role of health care professionals and demands that we address climate change.
It Might Not Matter Very Much Whether Insects Are Conscious, Neil Levy
It Might Not Matter Very Much Whether Insects Are Conscious, Neil Levy
Animal Sentience
In common with most other authors, Mikhalevich & Powell assume that phenomenal consciousness is a “precondition” of moral standing. Although the evidence they present makes it much more likely than usually thought that arthropods are phenomenally conscious, scepticism in the face of this evidence remains intellectually respectable. I suggest that we best make progress here by rejecting the notion that phenomenal consciousness is necessary for moral standing. Mental states that may lack phenomenal properties can do a lot of work in grounding moral standing, and there is less room for scepticism about these mental states than about phenomenal consciousness.
Ethical Considerations For Invertebrates, Scarlett R. Howard, Matthew R.E. Symonds
Ethical Considerations For Invertebrates, Scarlett R. Howard, Matthew R.E. Symonds
Animal Sentience
Mikhalevich & Powell (2020) have built on the discussion about which species deserve inclusion in animal ethics and welfare considerations. Here, we raise questions concerning the assessment criteria. We ask how to assess different species for their ability to fulfill the criteria, which criteria are most important, how we quantify them (absolute or on a continuum), and how non-animals such as fungi and plants fit into this paradigm.
Rethinking Rewilding Through Multispecies Justice, Danielle Celermajer
Rethinking Rewilding Through Multispecies Justice, Danielle Celermajer
Animal Sentience
Baker & Winkler’s argument that some humans, especially some Indigenous peoples, neither conceive of themselves as ontologically distinct from nature, nor do they organize their lives as such, is an important one. However, one needs to understand how colonialism and global capitalism have drawn Indigenous peoples and animals into new political economies. The new situation and the constrained opportunities available may have introduced a range of injustices or forms of violence that did not previously exist. This commentary proposes how a multispecies justice lens might assist in evaluating the most just arrangement for all parties, human and non-human.
Storytelling, Spoon-Feeding, And Traditions: Teaching Art History Better, Gay Sweely
Storytelling, Spoon-Feeding, And Traditions: Teaching Art History Better, Gay Sweely
Pedagogicon Conference Proceedings
As an art historian, it is increasingly hard to teach art history to students who have no background or interest in history. This paper definitely does not criticize my university or my state’s educational practices, but I believe that teaching history is very important to all of our students as citizens. I was educated in, have taught in three countries, and have published in four countries. That said, in the past 20 years, it has become more and more difficult to teach the history of art, artists, and stylistic movements. Why? The majority of my students lack any background or …
Panpsychism As An Observational Science, Gregory Matloff
Panpsychism As An Observational Science, Gregory Matloff
Publications and Research
The metaphysical concept of panpsychism defines a field of proto-consciousness that is present at all levels in the universe. An observational indication that this concept might be correct is self-organization on all levels from the molecular to the galactic. In 2011, an investigation into the validity of author Olaf Stapledon’s concept that a portion of stellar motion is volitional led to a consideration of an observational stellar kinematics anomaly dubbed Parenago’s Discontinuity. Data available at the time indicated that cooler, less massive stars (such as the Sun) revolve a bit faster around the center of the Milky Way galaxy than …
Jinping And The Beanstalk: The Tale Of Feuding International Giants And How The Planting Of Agricultural Tariffs Cultivated A Trade War, Amy Jicha
Emory International Law Review
The 2018 Trade War between the United States and China debilitated the world economy. In particular, the Trade War crippled the agricultural industry and resulted in irreversible agricultural waste. Both countries should consult the World Trade Organization (WTO) and use the WTO's dispute resolution process to end the Trade War. In turn, the WTO would likely address the wrongs committed by both countries, the U.S.'s national security defense, China's usurpation of WTO regulations, and China's unusual economic structure.
E-Cigarette Use Among Youth In Iowa, Miranda Kieler
E-Cigarette Use Among Youth In Iowa, Miranda Kieler
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Electronic cigarettes or electronic nicotine delivery products are battery-operated, heating elements that individuals use to inhale nicotine products rather than traditional cigarettes or cigars (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2020). E-cigarettes can also be used to inhale illicit drugs such as marijuana. Electronic cigarettes can resemble traditional cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, while other products may look like pens, USB sticks, or mods (larger tanks) (CDC, 2020). The e-cigarettes have an atomizer or heating element that helps individuals inhale liquid nicotine vapors. Electronic cigarettes were developed as a potential health tobacco cessation product and thought to reduce the health …

The Effect Of Spacing Of Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon Zizanioides) Hedgerows On Hillslope Erosion In Eastern Region, Ghana, Evan R. Lanese
The Effect Of Spacing Of Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon Zizanioides) Hedgerows On Hillslope Erosion In Eastern Region, Ghana, Evan R. Lanese
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Soil erosion in Ghana negatively effects many small holder farmers due to heavy rainfall, continuous land use, and a changing climate. Inexpensive, local, and sustainable practices that can be used to reduce soil movement thus building productive soils would benefit farmers in Ghana. Vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) has been used to this effect worldwide. Its local availability and positive reputation leaves desire to learn about its applicability in Ghana. A field study was conducted on plots of sloping farmland (10ft by 60ft) with three treatments: (1) control with no vetiver grass, (2) two vetiver grass hedgerows, (3) four …

Herbivory Strength Is Similar Or Even Greater In Algal-Compared To Coral-Dominated Habitats On A Recovering Coral Reef, Sarah Joy Bittick
Herbivory Strength Is Similar Or Even Greater In Algal-Compared To Coral-Dominated Habitats On A Recovering Coral Reef, Sarah Joy Bittick
Biology Faculty Works
Coral reefs are increasingly shifting to algal dominance after disturbances. While herbivory that controls algal biomass may influence the stability of coral versus algal states, most reefs are overfished. Despite this, little is known about the contribution of smaller fishes to herbivory, especially in algal versus coral post-disturbance habitats, where differences in structural complexity may also influence herbivory. After coral loss driven by a predator outbreak in Mo’orea, French Polynesia, the benthic community comprised a mosaic patchwork of remnant coral, the brown macroalga Turbinaria ornata on the reef flat, and turf algae (filaments) along the reef slope. We partitioned fish …
Borders By Consent: A Proposal For Reducing Two Kinds Of Violence In Immigration Practice, Richard Delgado, Jean Stefancic
Borders By Consent: A Proposal For Reducing Two Kinds Of Violence In Immigration Practice, Richard Delgado, Jean Stefancic
Essays, Reviews, and Shorter Works
We describe a new consensual theory of borders and immigration that reverses Peter Schuck's and Rogers Smith's notion of citizenship by consent and posits that borders are legitimate and make sense only if they are products of consent on the part of both countries on opposite sides of them. Our approach, in turn, leads to differential borders that address the many sovereignty and federalist problems inherent in border design by a close examination of the policies that different borders for example, the one between California and Mexico-need to serve in light of the populations living nearby. We build on our …

There’S An App For That? Ethical Consumption In The Fight Against Trafficking For Labour Exploitation, Stephanie A. Limoncelli
There’S An App For That? Ethical Consumption In The Fight Against Trafficking For Labour Exploitation, Stephanie A. Limoncelli
Sociology Faculty Works
Among the market-based strategies being used to fight trafficking for labour exploitation are apps aimed at encouraging ethical consumption. Such apps have surfaced in tandem with the increased involvement of businesses in anti-trafficking efforts and the promotion of social entrepreneurism. In this article, I describe and critically analyse three apps aimed at individual consumers, arguing that they do little to actually address labour exploitation. They rest on questionable assumptions about consumption, employ problematic assessment methodologies, and rely on business models that do more to provide opportunities for social entrepreneurs in the burgeoning anti-trafficking field than solutions for labour exploitation in …

Genome Size Confirms The Presence Of Artemisia Verlotiorum (Asteraceae) In Lebanon, Filip Verloove, Attila Mesterházy, Marc El Beyrouthy, Ben Zonneveld
Turkish Journal of Botany
The Far Eastern weed Artemisia verlotiorum was formerly reported from Lebanon. However, for a number of reasons this record was questionable. In 2019, the genuine presence of this species was confirmed based on macromorphology and strengthened by assessing the somatic nuclear DNA content (genome size or 2C-value) of the Lebanese populations.
Standardized Knowledge And Behavior Of Food-Protection Staff To Help Reduce The Potential For Incidences Of Foodborne Illness, Joshua A. Dufresne
Standardized Knowledge And Behavior Of Food-Protection Staff To Help Reduce The Potential For Incidences Of Foodborne Illness, Joshua A. Dufresne
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Background: Environmental public health has always been at the forefront of issues that affect the health and wellbeing of the general public when it comes to food safety. However, with the workforce moving from one of technological laggards toward faster progress toward new and improved systems in performing food service, the question becomes: What are the needs of the environmental health and food safety workforce, and how does one get there? Logically, another question follows: are our current training programs helping to make a difference in the number of foodborne-illness risk-factor violations being issued?
Purpose: This study was to …
The Lady At The Horizon: Egyptian Tree Goddess Iconography And Sacred Trees In Israelite Scripture And Temple Theology, John S. Thompson
The Lady At The Horizon: Egyptian Tree Goddess Iconography And Sacred Trees In Israelite Scripture And Temple Theology, John S. Thompson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
John S. Thompson explores scholarly discussions about the relationship of the Egyptian tree goddess to sacred trees in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and the temple. He describes related iconography and its symbolism in the Egyptian literature in great detail. He highlights parallels with Jewish, Christian, and Latter-day Saint teachings, suggesting that, as in Egyptian culture, symbolic encounters with two trees of life — one in the courtyard and one in the temple itself — are part of Israelite temple theology and may shed light on the difference between Lehi’s vision of the path of initial contact with Tree …

Creating And Conveying A Christlike Culture: More Than A Job, Elder Dale G. Renlund
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Thank you, Sister Johnson, Sister Evans, and Sister Haws for singing and accompanying the hymn “Savior, Redeemer of My Soul.” I am here to declare what Sister Johnson just sang, those remarkable words by Elder Orson F. Whitney: that our Savior and Redeemer is the only One whose mighty hand can make us whole. He is the only one who can fill with sweet a bitter cup. Our united prayer is that we all can come to be in perfect harmony with Him and be fit for the life above. That is what I would like to talk about.

Critical Thinking In A Service-Learning Course: Impacts Of Information Literacy Instruction, Heather R. Kennedy, Anne Marie H. Gruber
Critical Thinking In A Service-Learning Course: Impacts Of Information Literacy Instruction, Heather R. Kennedy, Anne Marie H. Gruber
Library Faculty/Staff Publications
It is well demonstrated that service-learning positively impacts a variety of student outcomes. However, methodological limitations have contributed to a lack of clear understanding of the mechanisms through which these effects occur. Additionally, little research has connected information literacy instruction explicitly with outcomes in service-learning courses. The present study used a pre-/post-test design to investigate cognitive outcomes, including critical thinking, using the Problem-Solving Analysis Protocol (P-SAP). Fifty-nine students from an undergraduate family services course participated. Results highlight the importance of library instruction to students’ critical thinking skills and suggest implications for collaborations between discipline faculty and library faculty in service-learning …

Investigation On The Human Coronaviruses Origin (Bats And Pangolins): A Review, James Blackar Mawolo, Caselia Akiti, Harris Kollie Momo
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A coronavirus related to SARS-CoV-2 has been isolated from Malayan pangolins illegally imported into Guangdong Province. It is not the precursor of SARS-CoV-2, but a comparison of viral genome sequences provides further evidence that the virus currently infecting humans. Bats and pangolins have been suggested as the natural reservoirs of a large variety of viruses. Some researchers have given attention to other species as the origin of coronaviruses and none have referred to bats and pangolins as the two emerging coronaviruses origin, which have caused unexpected human disease outbreaks recently. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the Middle East …
