Corporate Governance, Bankruptcy Waivers, And Consolidation In Bankruptcy, Daniel J. Bussel
Corporate Governance, Bankruptcy Waivers, And Consolidation In Bankruptcy, Daniel J. Bussel
Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal
This outstanding Article by Daniel J. Bussel examines bankruptcy’s ability to override corporate law formalities and provide effective relief consistent with the underlying policies of the Bankruptcy Code. Recent scholarship and case law tend to support the legitimacy of entity partitions and contractual barriers to voluntary bankruptcy relief found in corporate charters. The author persuasively contends that bankruptcy law should return to the basics by refocusing on substance over form in order for corporate formalities to again yield to substantive bankruptcy policy.
Retrieval Practice And Word Learning In Children With Specific Language Impairment And Their Typically Developing Peers, Laurence B. Leonard, Patricia Deevy
Retrieval Practice And Word Learning In Children With Specific Language Impairment And Their Typically Developing Peers, Laurence B. Leonard, Patricia Deevy
Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications
Purpose
In this article, we review the role of retrieval practice on the word learning and retention of children with specific language impairment (SLI).
Method
Following a brief review of earlier findings on word learning in children with SLI and the assumptions behind retrieval practice, four experiments are described that compared novel words learned in a repeated spaced retrieval condition and those learned in either a repeated study condition or a repeated immediate retrieval condition. Preschool-age children with SLI and their same-age peers with typical language development were the participants in all experiments. The effects of repeated spaced retrieval were …

Prevention Of Harmful Algal Blooms By The Mitigation Of Phosphorus Nutrient Loading Via Filtration By Steel Wool And Activated Carbon, Samantha Zidd, Sara Kidd, Ronald Simpson
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are a devastating ecological and economic consequence of the abundance of nutrient-rich agricultural runoff entering aquatic ecosystems (Baker et al. 2014). Bioavailable phosphorus from synthetic fertilizers is one of the major nutrients contributing to this global issue. Preliminary studies indicate that dissolved phosphorus can be removed from an aqueous environment when passed through a composite mixture of granular steel wool particles and activated carbon (Erickson, Gulliver, and Weiss (2007). Further research was conducted using higher quality concentration measurements to determine what grades of steel wool (0000, 000, 00) and types of activated carbon (GAC, PAC, EAC) …

Microtubule-based structures are an essential part of eukaryotic cells as they are involved in a number of processes such as phagocytosis, chromosome separation, intracellular transport, and cell motility. Transport along microtubules is accomplished by kinesin superfamily proteins (KIFs), which are motor proteins that bind cargo and use ATPase activity to move along microtubules in an anterograde fashion. One of the most common kinesin complexes is the heterotrimeric Kinesin 2 complex which is composed of KIF3 subunit dimers and the Kinesin Associated Protein 3 (KAP3). This complex is known as the KIF3 complex and functions along microtubules in cilia and flagella. …

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the use of light at an appropriate wavelength acting on a photosensitizing chemical to cause cell death via generation of reactive oxygen species. PDT has been useful in the management of skin conditions (like acne, psoriasis) and cancers like superficial skin, esophageal and non-small cell lung cancers. In addition to these therapeutic effects, previous murine studies from our group have demonstrated that topical PDT induces immunosuppression in vivo. Thus, topical PDT of skin can generate systemic effects through unknown mechanisms. Our group showed that PDT induces an immunosuppressive effect which occurs partly via Platelet-Activating Factor Receptor …

Optical imaging has demonstrated potential as a medical imaging modality for measuring tissue functionality. Recently, interest in fluorescence guided surgery has emerged from improvements in optical imaging that have allowed real-time feedback. Of the optical imaging modalities, spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) has gained a lot of interest. Unlike spectroscopic techniques, such as functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and frequency domain spectroscopy that measure bulk tissue properties, SFDI quantifies tissue functionality locally and wide field making it practical for clinical applications. Unfortunately, traditional SFDI systems use multi-pixel detectors, which may not exhibit ideal spectral characteristics, have limited sensitivity, be expensive, …
Medical Device For Loading Of Knee At Differing Angles, Alex Dragota
Medical Device For Loading Of Knee At Differing Angles, Alex Dragota
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Abstract
This was a design report for a device that would be used in patellar instability research. The device would be used inside an MRI machine and allow the patient to adjust the angle of their knee to the desired position.
Methods: Solidworks was used in the design process to model and to simulate the strength of the components used. The Solidworks simulation software allowed for a better understanding of the strength of individual components and the strength of the full device. Complexity of operating the device while inside an MRI machine were taken into account by using animations of …
Determination Of Iron-Reducing Bacterial Activities In Lake Sediments., Alexandra Kahn
Determination Of Iron-Reducing Bacterial Activities In Lake Sediments., Alexandra Kahn
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Algal blooms are growing rampantly in lacustrine systems due to an increase of phosphorus, a nutrient for algae. Phosphorus is being released into the environment causing overpopulation and eutrophication which damages the ecosystem. The availability of phosphorus is affected by the solubility of iron which is regulated through iron reducing and iron oxidizing bacteria. Phosphorus adheres to insoluble Fe(III), which prohibits algae from utilizing it, while phosphorus does not attach to soluble Fe(II) and therefore it remains available to algae. The purpose of this study was to determine how bacteria influence iron solubility and what are the ideal environmental conditions …
Claw Morphology Impacts Clinging Performance On Rough Substrates, Alexandra Pamfilie
Claw Morphology Impacts Clinging Performance On Rough Substrates, Alexandra Pamfilie
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The digits of anoles and geckos have been extensively investigated for their adhesive pads, which allow them to adhere effectively to smooth surfaces. Many pad-bearing lizards also possess claws, which have been posited as the principal contributor to clinging on rough surfaces. Previous studies have found correlations between habitat use and claw morphology, but whether variation in claw morphology impacts function or not has remained relatively understudied. In addition, it is reasonable to suggest that abrasive wear of the claws may impact clinging ability. I examined both natural and induced variation in the claw morphology of Cuban knight anoles ( …
