Making Our Voices Heard: Viewpoints Of Staff And Students At Chilton Bridge School, Emma Etherington

Plymouth Interdisciplinary Education Open Journal

Shared at the Power of Us Conference, this reflection explores my work as a Horticulture Practitioner at Chilton Bridge School, where I support SEN students through hands-on, nature-based learning. From planting trees to gaining qualifications in conservation, students are encouraged to learn in ways that suit them — practical, flexible, and rooted in the real world. This approach builds their confidence, self-esteem and sense of achievement. By listening to students and adapting to their individual needs, we create an environment where they feel included, valued, and capable, and where their voices are heard.

Is “Pre-Sepsis” The New Sepsis? A Narrative Review, Rémy Gerard, Antoine Dewitte, Fridolin Gross, Thomas Pradeu, Maël Lemoine, Julien Goret, Maria Mamani-Matsuda

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by a dysregulated immune response to infection, leading to organ dysfunction and high mortality. Despite advances in treatment, sepsis remains difficult to manage. Historically, the concept of sepsis evolved from ancient observations of infection-related decay to the germ theory of the 19th century. The latest Sepsis-3 definition describes sepsis as life-threatening organ dysfunction due to a dysregulated host response. However, this clinical characterization may be too late for effective intervention. The concept of endotypes and the ontological data applied to sepsis highlight the substantial heterogeneity in pathophysiological pathways leading to this endpoint. We propose …

Identification Of Crustose Coralline Algae Species In Florida And Their Ability To Induce Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Danielle Macias Jul 2025

Identification Of Crustose Coralline Algae Species In Florida And Their Ability To Induce Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Danielle Macias

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are a diverse, globally spread and yet poorly studied group of benthic organisms. They act as settlement cues for coral larvae, but this interaction is often species-specific, as CCA species can be either inducers or inhibitors to larval settlement and metamorphosis. Despite this importance, information on Caribbean CCA distribution, diversity, and impact on coral species is limited due to the difficulty in identifying them. In the present study, CCA samples were collected from seven different reef sites in the southeastern region of Florida’s Coral Reef and genetically identified using molecular analyses. Some of the samples collected …

Animal Interiority: Sentience And Spatial Perception, Raymund Königk Jul 2025

Animal Interiority: Sentience And Spatial Perception, Raymund Königk

Interiority

Interior design has traditionally prioritised human experiences, often neglecting ecological and nonhuman perspectives on interiority. This anthropocentric focus limits the discipline's ability to address the spatial and sensory needs of nonhuman persons, including teleost fishes. It overlooks interiority as a universal and relational phenomenon shared by all living beings. This research challenges these boundaries by proposing a biosemiotic framework that integrates the body, interiority, and inhabitation as interdependent constructs shaped by physiological, mental, and environmental interactions. By developing Jakob von Uexküll's (1982) biosemiotic schema, the study investigates the sentient experiences of teleost fishes to establish interiority as a capability inherent …

BACKGROUND: Radiological imaging plays an indispensable role in both preclinical and clinical studies of multiple myeloma (MM). However, manual quantification in longitudinal small animal PET/CT is limited by annotator bias, signal artifacts from urinary/fecal excretion, and voxel misalignment due to non-rigid registration. To address these challenges and improve characterization of tumor biology, we developed a semi-automated PET/CT quantification pipeline targeting defined regions of interest (ROIs) within the bone marrow-rich mouse skeleton, achieving sub-organ spatial resolution, including in anatomically complex sites such as the pelvis. We applied this MM-specific preclinical pipeline to analyze tumor distribution in a longitudinal molecular PET study …

The Influence Of Rhodolith Algae On Life History Of The Painted Urchin, Lytechinus Pictus, Celine X. De Jong Jul 2025

The Influence Of Rhodolith Algae On Life History Of The Painted Urchin, Lytechinus Pictus, Celine X. De Jong

Master's Theses

Rhodolith beds are globally distributed hotspots of diversity and productivity and serve as nursery habitats for some marine invertebrates. Poorly understood is whether rhodolith beds are nurseries because invertebrate larvae actively select them for settlement or migrate to them at later life stages. We studied the nursery role of rhodolith beds for the painted urchin, Lytechinus pictus at Santa Catalina Island, CA, USA. Subtidal surveys showed that in areas with greater live rhodolith cover, urchin density increased as well as mean urchin size. In caged substrate choice experiments, urchins selected rhodolith substrate relative to carbonate sand, supporting the notion that …

Influences Of The Western Press On News Framing Of Global Events In Developing Countries: Examining Covid-19 And Climate Coverage In A Bangladeshi News Organization, Arif Md Tareque Habib

Communication ETDs

This study shows that a small number of Western news organizations (e.g., Reuters, The New York Times) may influence how local news organizations in developing countries frame global crises and that this influence may lead local news organizations to ignore locally relevant aspects of those crises. To test this thesis, two studies were conducted on the coverage of two crises -- COVID-19 and climate change -- by a news organization in Bangladesh, a developing country in South Asia. The news organization, www.bdnews24.com, serves both as a news agency or news supplier for local newspapers and an online newspaper for users. …

Characterizing Host And Viral Factors Relevant To Turkey Hemorrhagic Enteritis Virus-Induced Immunosuppression, Abraham Quaye Jul 2025

Characterizing Host And Viral Factors Relevant To Turkey Hemorrhagic Enteritis Virus-Induced Immunosuppression, Abraham Quaye

Theses and Dissertations

Turkey hemorrhagic enteritis virus (THEV) is an adenovirus (AdV) that causes hemorrhagic enteritis (HE) in turkeys, a debilitating disease affecting predominantly 6-12-week-old turkey poults characterized by immunosuppression (IMS) and intestinal lesions leading to bloody diarrhea. Although a naturally-occurring avirulent THEV strain has been adopted as live vaccine and has proven effective at preventing HE in turkeys, it still retains its immunosuppressive ability. Thus, vaccinated birds are rendered more susceptible to opportunistic infections and death than unvaccinated cohorts, leading to substantial economic losses. This dissertation focuses on elucidating both host and viral factors mediating THEV-induced IMS in turkeys. As THEV gene …

Characterizing Gastric Cancer Tumor Immune Microenvironment Through Extracellular Vesicles, Claire Elizabeth Bruno

Theses and Dissertations

The tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) critically influences cancer progression and determining therapeutic response. As immunotherapies continue to improve and reshape cancer treatments, there is a need for tools that can more efficiently and accurately assess and monitor the TIME. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), especially small EVs (sEVs), are lipid-bound nanoparticles that carry proteins, DNA, and RNA reflective of their cell of origin, offering a novel, non-invasive biomarker of the TIME. This makes them a promising candidate for immune profiling and treatment monitoring in cancer. This thesis investigates the potential of EVs as biomarkers for TIME composition and immune activity. An analysis …

Effective And Eco-Friendly Strategies To Control Birds In Industrial Estate, Jasti Rahayu, Upik K. Hadi, Susi Soviana

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Bird infestations in industrial areas can cause infrastructure damage, contamination, and health risks. Despite these impacts, they are rarely addressed in environmental management strategies. At the Kaltim Industrial Estate (KIE) in Bontang, East Kalimantan, synanthropic bird species that thrive in human-altered environments have become persistent nuisances, particularly because of structural opportunities for roosting and altered ecological conditions. To address this issue, this study applied Integrated Pest Bird Management (IPBM), a non-lethal and environmentally friendly approach that combines species identification, behavior analysis, and targeted deterrents. IPBM was selected for its adaptability to industrial settings and its alignment with sustainable development goals. …
