Efficacy Of Yoga-Based Practice In Comparison To A Low-Fodmap Diet In The Treatment Of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (Ibs), Kirby Edsill
Capstone Showcase
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most prevalent gastrointestinal disorder, associated with abdominal pain, changes in stool, and abdominal bloating. IBS is currently linked to dietary triggers, visceral hypersensitivity, nervous system dysfunction, and psychosocial factors, however the exact etiology is unclear. Current first line treatment for IBS is focused on symptomatic management with the implementation of lifestyle modifications, which contribute to IBS symptom control and improved quality of life. This review analyzes the efficacy of regular yoga practice (I) compared to a low-FODMAP diet (C) for symptom management (O) in patients diagnosed with IBS (P).

Abstract
Introduction: Prostate cancer is the leading cancer affecting men of all races in the United States, and the second leading cause of cancer death in men. If caught early, many have had success in combating the disease, but if the cancer metastasizes, the 5-year survival rate drops to only 30%. Current treatment options heavily involve hormone therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. While these treatments can be effective for early stage prostate cancer, they can fall short in preventing the spread of the cancer to other parts of the body. This review analyzes a new potential way of preventing …

Mindfulness Meditation As A Treatment For Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Gad), Punit Patel
Capstone Showcase
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) involves dysregulation of worry for more than 6 months. Symptoms include fatigue, insomnia and irritability. Medications such as SSRIs may cause constipation, lower libido and cause withdrawal symptoms when discontinued. Alternative therapies like mindfulness meditation teach patients breath awareness and to redirect unwanted negative thoughts to positive ones. This paper examines the efficacy of mindfulness meditation treatment (I) for managing symptoms of anxiety (O) in adult patients with mild-moderate GAD (P) in comparison to stress management education (C).

Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries As A Possible Risk Factor For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears In Female High School And College Athletes, Brooke Weyand
Capstone Showcase
Introduction: Both mild traumatic brain injuries (concussions) and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are among two of the most common, and most career-ending sports medicine injuries. Concussions often result from a blow to the head that can cause headaches, difficulty concentrating, photophobia, and memory loss. Concussion recovery often involved brain rest from athletics, screen exposure, reading, lights, and if severe enough, academics. The ACL is a ligament that is detrimental in stabilization of the knee joint. It connects the femur to the tibia within the joint, and can tear suddenly if it undergoes a quick twisting motion. ACL tears often …

Abstract
Introduction: Allogenic red blood cell (RBC) transfusions are used for a number of different reasons. As with any medical procedure, allogenic RBC transfusions are not risk-free. Since the first recorded blood transfusion in 1655, the process has remained relatively unchanged. ABO incompatibility and contamination with infectious diseases are two major complications associated with RBC transfusions. Furthermore, traditional allogenic RBC transfusions have supply and demand issues. These issues, plus several more, could be alleviated with the use of artificial blood. This paper addresses the important clinical question: In patients who require RBC transfusions (P), is there a viable artificial blood …

The Use Of A Gluten-Free Diet As Treatment For Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Grace Mcknight
Capstone Showcase
Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (HT) is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in humans. The current treatment for HT is thyroid hormone supplementation. However, recent research suggests possible treatment of HT with gluten-free diets. This study found several sources testing this hypothesis. The results showed evidence to support that gluten-free diets are associated with, and cause a reduction in thyroid antibodies. Despite the current evidence, more randomized control trials are needed to increase reliability and validity of these findings.

Adapting the Ethnographic Discourse Analysis method developed by Stanton Wortham and Angela Reyes this thesis traces the language employed in the ethno-nationalist web series Murdoch Murdoch. While not as widely known as other examples of the burgeoning landscape of far-right internet content such as news sites like InfoWars or Brietbart, Murdoch Murdoch can still reveal crucial details about how far right propaganda seeks to radicalize its viewers. This thesis argues that Murdoch Murdoch uses its visual and discursive indexicals to present a near absolute dichotomy between a Positive Self that consists of white ethno-nationalism, and a Negative Other that …

Carousel: Performance And Ritual Of A Child's Play, Erik Maniscalco
Theses and Dissertations
Carousel is a series of oil paintings inspired by my seven year old
daughter, as well as my work towards becoming a childhood educator. My
aim with this project is to explore the performative and ritualistic nature of
children’s play: focusing on the creative ways children stretch and reshape
their reality through imagined play narratives. Upon the carousel’s stage,
children select a character and take part in a performed ritual. I’ve long felt
connected to the visual vocabulary found within baroque and renaissance
styles, and I am fascinated by the mixture of amusement, tradition,
religion, and distortion imbued within the …

Performance Evaluation And Community Needs Of Spay Our Strays Organization, Elizabeth Adams
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Free-roaming cat populations have been linked to public health concerns and negative impacts on animal shelter resources. Trap-neuter-return has gained popularity in the last few decades as a humane and effective approach to decrease the population of community cats and address these concerns. Spay Our Strays advocates for trap-neuter-return practices in Lexington, Kentucky, by providing services to the local community and surrounding counties. Strategic planning techniques and comparative analysis are used to develop recommended strategic actions the organization can use to improve their impact. Findings showed a need to invest in board development, diversify funding sources, focus on community-level targeting, …

Killing With Kindness: When Hunters Want To Let You Know They Care, Erica Von Essen, Michael Allen
ETSU Faculty Works
‘Care’ is a term that hunters increasingly apply to diverse practices pertaining to their interactions with wildlife. In this article, we investigated the extent and durability of hunters’ use of care language, including appeals made to sentiment, relation, compassion, embodiedness and situated morality. After establishing the use of such language in contemporary hunting media, we discuss two case studies of contemporary sport hunting that tease out dimensions of care. These case studies show how hunters’ appeal to care is deeply problematic and oppositely, how these hunting forms bring out new relations and scopes of care with wildlife unanticipated by critics. …

Neural ordinary differential equations (ODEs) have recently emerged as a novel ap- proach to deep learning, leveraging the knowledge of two previously separate domains, neural networks and differential equations. In this paper, we first examine the back- ground and lay the foundation for traditional artificial neural networks. We then present neural ODEs from a rigorous mathematical perspective, and explore their advantages and trade-offs compared to traditional neural nets.

The spiritual chasm of status that exists between man and beast is daily put to the test by the very beasts kept in our homes. Human beings have a long history of keeping animals for one reason or another, but it has only been recently that the concept of animals purely maintained for companionship has taken center stage. The Middle Ages in particular served as a transformative moment in the history of the “pet,” where not only was the role of the animal within man’s existence re-examined, but so, too, were the specific animals preferred by different cultures more solidly …

Luce Irigaray, a French feminist theorist, used her writing as a tool to further the postmodern feminist movement and her theory of sexual difference. Her work highlights the divergence from traditional, modernist thought and the dream of a well rounded western society that is grounded in the recognition of sexual difference. The #MeToo Movement, the defining feminist movement of present day, proves Irigaray’s point of a need for the recognition of sexual difference. The importance of women being able to speak their mind is one the foundations of Irigaray’s work and a pillar of the #MeToo Movement. Moving beyond the …

Abstract
Introduction
Epinephrine administration during cardiac arrest has been the standard of care for decades. In the United States, epinephrine administration has been recommended by the American Heart Association since the first cardiac arrest guidelines were published in 1974. However, epinephrine use became the standard of care with strong medical rational but with limited data on outcomes. The intent of this research is to review available literature and determine if in (P) an adult population in non-traumatic out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (I) treatment with epinephrine administration (C) compared to cardiac care without the administration of epinephrine (O) results in improved survival …

The idea of using animals and, in some cases, service animals, for therapeutic services has been becoming more popular recently. The definition of a service animal states that any dog who is trained to complete tasks in order to benefit a person who has a disability, however, all kinds of animals such as dogs, cats, and even horses have been used in therapeutic settings to help patients with different mental illnesses such as PTSD, and also have been known to improve the mood of certain people. Another therapeutic usage for animals that has much more room for research is using …

This essay discusses some difficulties of teaching Renaissance engagements with race, class, and gender in diverse twenty-first-century classrooms and looks to contemporary romance—science fiction and fantasy—for examples of humane and reparative pedagogy. Ursula K. Le Guin’s feminist revisioning of her Earthsea trilogy in the late story “Dragonfly” both models the humility required to make change and stages a teaching practice that welcomes the disruptive and uncomfortable questions posed by a university’s first female student.

This study analyzed the effects that the well known antidepressant Wellbutrin (Bupropion) has on risk taking behavior, suicidal behavior, social behavior, and motivation. Despite Bupropion’s ability to improve motivation it has been associated with numerous suicides. There have been reports that state that Bupropion is the worst antidepressant for treating suicidal behaviors and may even play a part in increasing suicidal tendencies among users. This research question will be tested in a sample of 32 Sprague-Dawley rats. 16 …

There has been much debate surrounding the over- or under- diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). One reason for this debate is that ADHD is a commonly misdiagnosed disorder. This leads to negative consequences for those who have been misdiagnosed and receive stimulant medication management. Misdiagnosis of ADHD is likely due to the interaction of four main factors. First, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) has a lower validity for ADHD diagnosis than previous editions. Second, primary care physicians (PCPs) are responsible for the vast majority of ADHD diagnoses but have a …

The Integration Of Lidar And Legacy Datasets Provides Improved Explanations For The Spatial Patterning Of Shell Rings In The American Southeast, Dylan S. Davis, Robert Dinapoli, Matthew Sanger, Carl Lipo
Anthropology Datasets
Archaeologists have struggled to combine remotely sensed datasets with preexisting information for landscape-level analyses. In the American Southeast, for example, analyses of lidar data using automated feature extraction algorithms have led to the identification of over 40 potential new pre-European-contact Native American shell ring deposits in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Such datasets are vital for understanding settlement distributions, yet a comprehensive assessment requires remotely sensed and previously surveyed archaeological data. Here, we use legacy data and airborne lidar-derived information to conduct a series of point pattern analyses using spatial models that we designed to assess the factors that best explain …
Sinorhizobium Meliloti Changes Motility Phenotypes In The Presence Of Serum, Eris K. Bisal
Sinorhizobium Meliloti Changes Motility Phenotypes In The Presence Of Serum, Eris K. Bisal
Theses and Dissertations
Sinorhizobium meliloti is a nitrogen-fixing flagellated soil bacterium that engages in a mutual symbiotic relationship with the legume Medicago sativa. Using its flagella, S. meliloti is chemotactic in response to varying environmental cues thereby directed to a target, which is typically the root hairs of M. sativa. Lu et al, 2012 suggested that a signal from the plant can switch S. meliloti from a free-living flagellated microbe to a host-invading non-flagellated microbe, although this signal has not been identified. This switch is thought to occur inside curled root hairs of the plant, and after becoming non-flagellated, S. …

Traditional Knowledge In Taiwan: A Call For Greater Participation Of Indigenous Peoples In The Global Intellectual Property Marketplace, James M. Cooper
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article explores the plight of the Aborigines of Taiwan and the legal protections that exist for their Traditional Knowledge. While Taiwan continues to face international isolation with a diminished number of states recognizing the Republic of China as the seat of China, the island's government has taken limited steps to recognize language, cultural, and economic rights of its Indigenous peoples. International law has not been helpful in protecting Traditional Knowledge, but Taiwan could use its vast economic resources and positive track record in protecting some of these rights to further its goals of international recognition. This Article details the …
Fintech And International Financial Regulation, Yesha Yadav
Fintech And International Financial Regulation, Yesha Yadav
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article shows that Fintech exacerbates the difficulties of standard setting in international financial regulation. Earlier work introduced the "Innovation Trilemma" (the Trilemma). When seeking to balance the goals of achieving market integrity and innovation through clear and simple rulemaking, regulators can--at best--achieve only two out of these three objectives. Fintech's unique characteristics--a reliance on automation and artificial intelligence, novel types of big data, as well as the use of disintermediating financial supply chains comprising a mix of traditional firms as well as technology specialists and newcomers--complicates the application of the Trilemma. Rulemaking struggles to achieve needed clarity where innovative …
