The Road To Human Emancipation - The Moral And Political Foundations Of Markets, William Shi
The Road To Human Emancipation - The Moral And Political Foundations Of Markets, William Shi
CMC Senior Theses
The thesis aims to provide both a real public ideology and the legal and socioeconomic structures to realize Karl Marx’s ideal of human emancipation. Marx argues that in capitalist society, the legal and political superstructure forces the ruling class to represent its interest as the public interest, which legitimizes the massive inequality in resources and social power. To demonstrate how to realize the substantive public interest, the two parts of the thesis have two goals. The first part aims to formulate a rightful candidate to the public ideology of human emancipation, which represents the substantive public interest rather than the …
Biomechanics And Neural Control Of Movement: Cmi's Effects On Downstream Motor Processing And Gait In Forwards And Backwards Walking, Christopher Choi
Biomechanics And Neural Control Of Movement: Cmi's Effects On Downstream Motor Processing And Gait In Forwards And Backwards Walking, Christopher Choi
CMC Senior Theses
Analyzing the effects of cognitive motor interferences (CMI) on walking is usually done in patients with neurological comorbidity or during forward walking (FW). However, there are few studies that examine gait differences between FW and backward walking (BW) under the presence of CMI when speed is kept constant on a treadmill. In this study we examined how CMI would disrupt sensory feedback and affect the descending motor pathway. We hypothesized that subjects that walked backwards and were given a cognitive task would show the greatest differences in gait due to a lack of visual input and the presence of CMI. …
“Going Over The Top” – The Impact Of World War I On Three Leaders Of World War Ii, Nick Sage
“Going Over The Top” – The Impact Of World War I On Three Leaders Of World War Ii, Nick Sage
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis explores the impact that service in the First World War had on three global leaders of the Second World War: Winston Churchill, Adolf Hitler, and Harry Truman. Through analysis of original documents from the Churchill Archive Center, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, and the archives of the National World War I Museum, this project contends that the years 1914-1918 became a common point of reference and reflection for these three leaders—especially in their private musings and public rhetoric during World War II. Additionally, primary evidence reveals that the personal narratives of wartime service that these …
Policies And Politics Of Reform : The Governmentality Of Structural Adjustment In Urban And Rural Egypt, Gabriel Gluskin-Braun
Policies And Politics Of Reform : The Governmentality Of Structural Adjustment In Urban And Rural Egypt, Gabriel Gluskin-Braun
CMC Senior Theses
This analysis explores the unique and tumultuous approach to reform in Egypt and addresses
the effects of the implementation of neoliberal policy tools. These tools included privatization, price
liberalization, deregulation, and land reform in both urban and rural areas. Based on these effects, this
analysis will argue that the benefits accrued by the political-economic elite created opportunities for
new patronage networks that upheld elite economic privilege through the process of liberalization
while a wide swath of Egyptians suffered the loss of limited privileges and protections from the state
established by Nasr and upheld by his successors. Consequently, the socialist-statist ‘social …
Evaluating Interpersonal Problems In Anorexia Nervosa Through The Lens Of Polyvagal Theory, Marika Morelan
Evaluating Interpersonal Problems In Anorexia Nervosa Through The Lens Of Polyvagal Theory, Marika Morelan
CMC Senior Theses
Eating disorders are an increasingly prevalent issue, especially among young women. While they aren’t a new phenomenon, they are historically under-researched, and remain widely misunderstood. Without understanding the causes underlying these disorders or the mechanisms working to maintain them, treating them successfully has proved to be incredibly difficult. This is especially the case with Anorexia Nervosa. Out of the six eating disorders in the DSM-5, it has the lowest treatment success rate and an alarmingly high relapse rate. Treating the disorder through weight restoration and the extinction of compensatory behaviors alone does not fully resolve the disordered pathology; interpersonal problems …
Mistaken Murder And Written Womanhood: The Evolution Of Evelina Edwards In Late Eighteenth-Century And Early Nineteenth-Century Bath, England, Amanda Mell
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis explores the major themes and literary influences of Jane Austen’s novels through the voice of Evelina Edwards, a fictional girl born in Bath, England in 1784. Over the course of nine years, Evelina reconstructs her social world in a series of diary entries and letters, mirroring the anxieties and concerns of real women during the Regency era. Her writing juxtaposes the novel of manners with mystery, both satirizing trivial concerns and confronting emotional trauma in response to death and social isolation. Class hierarchy and gender roles placed heavy restrictions on women’s freedom, forcing them to carefully calibrate the …
The Capabilities Approach To Metaphysical Personhood, Mohnish Shah
The Capabilities Approach To Metaphysical Personhood, Mohnish Shah
CMC Senior Theses
It is accepted that humans are persons, but what does this mean? Society equates personhood with legal rights, moral worth, and metaphysical status. But exactly what makes us persons and distinguishes us from non-persons? What does our conception of this distinction and the value and rights we grant to persons but not to non-persons say about the type of creature that we are?
Many philosophers have tried to define metaphysical personhood. However, this thesis argues that current accounts of metaphysical personhood are inadequate. Next, this thesis borrows and modifies Martha Nussbaum’s capabilities approach to human dignity in order to construct …
Il Contrapasso Nell’Inferno Di Dante Alighieri: Un’Analisi Del Contrapasso Attraverso Francesca Da Rimini, Conte Ugolino, E Lucifero, Liv Allegra Baker
Il Contrapasso Nell’Inferno Di Dante Alighieri: Un’Analisi Del Contrapasso Attraverso Francesca Da Rimini, Conte Ugolino, E Lucifero, Liv Allegra Baker
CMC Senior Theses
In his Divina Commedia, Dante Alighieri uses the contrapasso as an instrument to administer justice to the sinners in Inferno. The law of the contrapasso mandates that the punishments inflicted upon the sinners in Inferno respect the nature of the sins that they committed on earth. In Dante’s afterlife, the contrapasso is the means to fulfill the sinners’ ultimate destinies, as determined by their terrestrial choices and actions. Though he explicitly uses the term contrapasso only once, the poet invites its application in every circle of the Inferno. This thesis explores the law of the contrapasso in …
Determining The Antibacterial Activity And Mode Of Action Of Tirandamycin, Hailey Bouchard
Determining The Antibacterial Activity And Mode Of Action Of Tirandamycin, Hailey Bouchard
CMC Senior Theses
Tirandamycin is a small molecule natural product that has been isolated from various species of marine and terrestrial Streptomyces. The natural product has shown antibacterial activity against an array of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, showing promise as a pharmaceutical drug. Tirandamycin has 14 known derivatives, many of which have been created synthetically. Some of its derivatives are particularly potent against the high-risk bacteria vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. However, the antibacterial potency of these derivatives has not been tested systematically leading to the possibility of discovering more potent …
Women With High Functioning Asd: Relationships And Sexual Health, Isabelle Taylor
Women With High Functioning Asd: Relationships And Sexual Health, Isabelle Taylor
CMC Senior Theses
Women with high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are disproportionately less represented in research in comparison to their male counterparts. Some propose that this is as a result of more men having ASD and therefore the diagnostic criteria being further indicative of their gender, but regardless, it remains apparent that the need for supporting women with Autism Spectrum Disorder is just as crucial (Kreiser & White, 2014). For both genders, though, deficits in social skills and the presence of repetitive and restrictive behaviors often lend themselves to conduct seen as inappropriate or awkward within the neurotypical dating world (Hodges et …
Dark Tourism In The Midwest, Rachel Walden
Dark Tourism In The Midwest, Rachel Walden
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Dark tourism, or the study of the act of travel to sites associated with death, suffering, and the seemingly macabre, is becoming increasingly popular. The administrative staff who run these sites carry the responsibility of bridging the gap between tourist and community. Administrative perspectives on a business level as well as a personal level reflect a deeper understanding of dark tourism in the Midwest. Six case studies were conducted via interview: Saloon No. 10; the Villisca Axe Murder House; Oakland Cemetery; the Glensheen Mansion; Ohio State Reformatory; and Molly Stark Park. The administrative structures of these sites and their correlation …

Characterization Of Deiodinase Expression In The Hypothyroid Developing Cochlea, Maria A. Uscategui Calderon
Characterization Of Deiodinase Expression In The Hypothyroid Developing Cochlea, Maria A. Uscategui Calderon
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Thyroid hormone (TH) is essential for cochlear development and normal auditory function. Considering the importance of TH in mediating cochlear development, understanding the degree to which developing tissues can adapt to perturbations in thyroid hormone signaling is extremely important. The deiodinases (D2 and D3) are enzymes that tightly control TH availability at the tissue level and have been proposed to function as adaptive mechanisms that maintain tissue TH homeostasis. D2 converts thyroxine (T4) to a biologically active ligand triiodothyronine (T3); locally amplifying a T3 signal. Conversely, Dio3 inactivates T3 and T4 by converting these iodothyronines to the inactive metabolites diiodothyronine …
Symmetry’S Mandate: Constraining The Politicization Of American Administrative Law, Daniel Walters
Symmetry’S Mandate: Constraining The Politicization Of American Administrative Law, Daniel Walters
Faculty Scholarship
Recent years have seen the rise of pointed and influential critiques of deference
doctrines in administrative law. What many of these critiques have in
common is a view that judges, not agencies, should resolve interpretive disputes
over the meaning of statutes—disputes the critics take to be purely legal
and almost always resolvable using lawyerly tools of statutory construction.
In this Article, I take these critiques, and the relatively formalist assumptions
behind them, seriously and show that the critics have not acknowledged or
advocated the full reform vision implied by their theoretical premises. Specifically,
critics have extended their critique of judicial …

Tim Edgar: The Accidental Comparatist, Kim Brooks
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
This paper focuses on the contributions of Tim Edgar as a major comparative law scholar. It reviews the major debates and theoretical directions in comparative law scholarship and offers a case study of Edgar's contributions in the light of the major debates in comparative law. Edgar's development as a comparatist is traced through three defined phases. His identification of the policy problem to be resolved is highlighted as a major feature of his contribution.
The Ethical Tax Judge, Kim Brooks
The Ethical Tax Judge, Kim Brooks
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
This chapter advances the claim that judges have an ethical obligation of competence that requires them to enhance their knowledge about language (in the context of statutory interpretation) and income tax law design and policy. It articulates some of the foundational understandings that support that competence and provides a simple hierarchy of approaches to interpreting income tax law. It concludes by contending that greater competence is not only more ethical but also advances other important societal goals fulfilled by the imposition of income tax systems.

From Discovery To Delivery: Public Sector Development Of The Rvsv-Zebov Ebola Vaccine, Matthew Herder, Janice Graham, Richard Gold
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
The discovery and development of the Ebola rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine challenge the common assumption that the research and development for innovative therapeutic products and vaccines is best carried out by the private sector. Using internal government documents obtained through an access to information request, we analyze the development of rVSV-ZEBOV by researchers at Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory beyond its patenting and licensing to a biotech company in the United States in 2010. According to government documentation, the company failed to make any progress toward a phase 1 clinical trial until after the WHO Public Health Emergency of International Concern freed substantial …
Religious Accommodation, The Establishment Clause, And Third-Party Harm, Mark Storslee
Religious Accommodation, The Establishment Clause, And Third-Party Harm, Mark Storslee
Faculty Scholarship
In the wake of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, religious accommodation has become increasingly controversial. That controversy has given rise to a new legal theory gaining popularity among academics and possibly a few Supreme Court justices: the idea that the First Amendment's Establishment Clause condemns accommodations whenever they generate anything beyond a minimal cost for third parties.
The third-party thesis is appealing. But this Article argues that there are good reasons to believe it falls short as an interpretation of the Establishment Clause. In its place, the Article offers a new theory for understanding the relationship between costly accommodations and the …
Taxing Local Energy Externalities, Hannah Jacobs Wiseman
Taxing Local Energy Externalities, Hannah Jacobs Wiseman
Faculty Scholarship
There is a fundamental problem of scale in the governance of industrial development. For some of the fastest-growing U.S. industries, the negative impacts of development fall primarily at the local level, and the benefits tend to accrue more broadly to states and the federal government. These governments accordingly have inadequate incentives to address the very localized negative externalities of development. Yet states also increasingly preempt most local control over some forms of development. This creates a regulatory void, in which state and federal regulations are inadequate, and local governments lack the power to use traditional Pigouvian tools such as regulation, …
Günter Frankenberg's Comparative Constitutional Studies: Between Magic And Deceit, Jud Mathews
Günter Frankenberg's Comparative Constitutional Studies: Between Magic And Deceit, Jud Mathews
Faculty Scholarship
Constitutions traffic in magic and deceit, argues Günter Frankenberg, promising freedom and democracy even as they underwrite the exercise of coercive power on a massive scale. Scholars should approach constitutions with a healthy skepticism, but, Frankenberg contends, most mainstream scholars are too credulous, especially regarding the claims of liberal constitutionalism. Comparative Constitutional Studies serves as his corrective to the perceived blind spots and predilections of mainstream comparative constitutional scholarship, and it gives attention to little-known constitutions, forgotten histories, and alternatives to liberal constitutionalism. It’s a rich, challenging, and valuable book, one that takes the reader to some off the beaten …
Identity Manipulation: Responding To Advances In Artificial Intelligence And Robotics, Suzie Dunn
Identity Manipulation: Responding To Advances In Artificial Intelligence And Robotics, Suzie Dunn
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technologies have destabilized our ability to control our identity. Today, it is increasingly accessible for the average person to appropriate the voice, image, and body of another individual through the use of technology. Deepfake videos swap new faces into existing videos, facial re-enactment allows for the face of one person to be superimposed on the face of someone else in a real time video, artificial speech synthesis can clone another person’s voice, and 3D printing and modern robotics can reproduce life-size copies of living people. These are all examples of the ways technology …
Novel Roles Of Rip2 In Inflammation And Resolution, Michael Shehat
Novel Roles Of Rip2 In Inflammation And Resolution, Michael Shehat
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Receptor-interacting protein 2 (RIP2) is a kinase which mediates signaling downstream of the bacterial peptidoglycan sensors Nucleotide-binding Oligomerization Domain (NOD) 1 and 2. Genetic loss or pharmaceutical inhibition of RIP2 has been shown to be beneficial in multiple inflammatory disease models with the effects largely attributed to reducing pro-inflammatory signaling downstream of peptidoglycan recognition. However, given the widespread expression of this kinase and its reported interactions with numerous other proteins, it is possible that RIP2 has many other unappreciated roles. In this work, we report the involvement of RIP2 in two novel pathways. First, we demonstrate a NOD2 dependent role …
Unless The Lord Build The House, Alicia L. Maimone
Unless The Lord Build The House, Alicia L. Maimone
Honors Theses and Capstones
"Unless the Lord Builds the House" is a work of creative nonfiction about two years of my life as my chronic Lyme disease altered how I had to live and how I thought about my life . There are three major threads that I explore.
The first theme is about losing my old self. There was an old Alicia and a new Alicia, and I explore my frustration at losing the old Alicia. I explore this by talking about building. I see myself as a house under renovation, and I write about my struggle to let go of my past …
The Role Of Socio-Economic Status On The Language Output Of 3-6 Year Old's During A Naturalistic Museum Study, Serena K. Mueller
The Role Of Socio-Economic Status On The Language Output Of 3-6 Year Old's During A Naturalistic Museum Study, Serena K. Mueller
Honors Theses and Capstones
Over the past 50 years, the lexical nature of young children’s multi-word utterances has been disputed. We ask how socioeconomic status (SES) impacts content and function word usage, and how function word use impacts MLU. Findings show that SES positively correlates with content word production and MLU, which contributes to our knowledge on how SES shapes language and highlights the need for its consideration across settings.
A Hitchhikers' Guide To Comparative Tax Scholarship, Kim Brooks
A Hitchhikers' Guide To Comparative Tax Scholarship, Kim Brooks
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Comparative law offers scholars a fascinating lens through which to dis- cover new insights about the world, but only if we take on comparative law projects. Few legal scholars devote a substantial strand of their research to comparative study, and so their work fails to benefit from the active and prolonged debates in comparative law. This Article makes a singular, but hopefully substantial, contribution: it seeks to render more accessible the comparative law scholarship with the aim of facilitating easier access to comparative law insights for tax (and hopefully other) law scholars. Put another way, the Article seeks to engage …

The Perils Of Pandemic Exceptionalism, Julian Arato, Kathleen Claussen, J. Benton Heath
The Perils Of Pandemic Exceptionalism, Julian Arato, Kathleen Claussen, J. Benton Heath
Articles
In response to the pandemic, most states have enacted special measures to protect national economies and public health. Many of these measures would likely violate trade and investment disciplines unless they qualify for one of several exceptions. This Essay examines the structural implications of widespread anticipated defenses premised on the idea of “exceptionalism.” It argues that the pandemic reveals the structural weakness of the exceptions-oriented paradigm of justification in international economic law.
