The Role Of Gaba Signaling In Gnrh Neuron Migration And Function, Tyler Mitchell Jan 2020

The Role Of Gaba Signaling In Gnrh Neuron Migration And Function, Tyler Mitchell

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons are key regulators of sexual development and reproduction of animals from ascidians to vertebrates. Gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) has been implicated, in literature, as one of the major players in the regulating GnRH neuronal development and neuronal activity. GABA usually acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, however, in GnRH neurons it has been described as an excitatory stimulus in different animal models. In my master thesis I will present and discuss a series of scientific articles on this topic to summarize the current understanding of how GABA signaling affects GnRH neuronal development and physiological activity in reproduction.

Implicit Sense Of Gratification : A New Lens On Academic Intrinsic Motivation, Haiyang Su Jan 2020

Implicit Sense Of Gratification : A New Lens On Academic Intrinsic Motivation, Haiyang Su

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among key concepts from three motivation theories— mastery and performance goal orientation from Achievement Goal Theory (AGT, Elliot & McGregor, 2001), proximal and distal goal setting from Goal Setting Theory (GST; Locke & Latham, 1990), and academic intrinsic motivation based on the Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985). The study also examined moderating effects by gender and grade level difference on the relationship between proximal goal setting and academic intrinsic motivation. Implicit sense of gratification, a new concept proposed in this study, was used to test the mediation …

Elemental Composition And Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Processed Seafood Products Using Atomic Spectrometric Techniques, Austin A. Roberts

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Arsenic (As) is a widely known toxic element that is highly ubiquitous and has been detected in soil, sediment, naturals waters, the atmosphere, and in organisms of the 5 kingdoms. The toxicity of As however, is dependent on the molecular form in which it takes as well as the route of exposure. For the general population, exposure to As mainly takes place via ingestion of food and water, which have led to numerous studies investigating As and it’s various species in these matrices. Seafood is one of the major sources of dietary exposure to As and has thus led to …

Economy, Exchange, And Political Power At Lomas Entierros, Central Pacific Costa Rica, Yajaira Maria Nunez-Cortes

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Archaeology's focus on long-term transformations in society provides a unique perspective to understand the rise and development of political and economic power and its effects on different groups of society. Comparative archaeological analyses of complex societies have demonstrated that there is a high degree of variability in the expression of such complexity, as well as in the processes that led to its emergence around the world. Within this broader context, this study focuses on intra-site and household economy patterns to gain insight into the sources of political and economic power, and reveal other forms of organization that may differ from …

A Hunger For Justice : Everyday Forms Of Latinx Resistance In New York State's Capital Region, Cassandra Andrusz- Ho Ching Jan 2020

A Hunger For Justice : Everyday Forms Of Latinx Resistance In New York State's Capital Region, Cassandra Andrusz- Ho Ching

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Low-income racialized communities have always disproportionately struggled with food system inequities. However, after the 2008 financial crisis, conditions have become more precarious, especially in Latinx communities. This context has resulted in intensified food system inequities, manifesting as food insecurity, high food pricing, inconsistent and partial food programming, diet related diseases, low wages, worker and environmental rights abuses. This dissertation examines how low-income Latinx communities, respond to these intensified inequities in the New York State Capital Region from 2008-2018. Through qualitative research, interviews and observations, I assess the nature and context of everyday practices that undermine or resist food system inequities, …

The Brain's Large-Scale Electrophysiological Signals : Fundamental Attributes And Neurosurgical Applications, Mohammad Amin N/A Nourmohammadi Jan 2020

The Brain's Large-Scale Electrophysiological Signals : Fundamental Attributes And Neurosurgical Applications, Mohammad Amin N/A Nourmohammadi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Brain’s electrophysiological signals are most certainly the ultimate source for studying the sophisticated neural network inside our cranium. The unparalleled complexity of these biosignalsis the quintessential manifestation of their underlying complicated neurophysiological processes. Studying brain signals on the cellular level provides valuable information regarding the brain’s electrophysiology on the small-scale. However, it is the remarkable network in the large-scale that gives rise to the brain’s extraordinary attributes and exceptional capabilities—perception, cognition, computation, and consciousness are all the emergent byproducts of the dynamic neuronal interactions on the network level. In this sense, the large-scale electrophysiological signals, recorded from the surface of …

The Dysregulation Of Circadian Rhythms And Its Relation To Hippocampal Neurodegenerative Disease, John Patrick Mccauley Jan 2020

The Dysregulation Of Circadian Rhythms And Its Relation To Hippocampal Neurodegenerative Disease, John Patrick Mccauley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Circadian rhythms modulate body temperature, sleep-wake cycles and cognitive functions like learning and memory. Interestingly, patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer’s disease and brain insults like traumatic brain injury experience dysregulated circadian rhythms and learning and memory deficiencies as a symptom. The core molecular machinery that establishes these rhythms relies on the activation of positive and negative transcriptional-translational feedback loops within the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Subordinate circadian oscillators distributed throughout the peripheral and central nervous system follow the rhythmic activity of the SCN. One of these, the hippocampus, is mostly involved in regulating memory formation and recall. Experimental …

Real Men Don't Get Lipos : Gender, Political Economy, And Biomedicine In Colombia's Male Beauty Industry, Jose Alejandro Arango-Londono

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The last few years in Colombia have seen the rise and expansion of male beauty industry. Such growth seems to suggest a shift from entrenched gendered ideas as well as new markets and economic opportunities to pursue. This dissertation is the result of eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in Cali, Colombia focusing on how the development of male beauty has emerged in a context that is profoundly shaped by the legacy of armed conflict and drug-trafficking. The expansion of male beauty industry flourishes in a political and economic moment in Colombia where neoliberal policies are prevalent in the state’s agenda.

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Within the United States there are over 8,000 farmers markets, that sell directly to consumers. New York State has the second-largest number of markets, at 637, with the capital region host to 114 markets. Over the years the selections of offerings have grown to include not only produce but ready-to-eat foods, eggs, dairy products, crafts, beer, and wine. The increasing popularity of farmers markets coupled with inadequate regulatory oversight of these markets, can contribute to incidences of foodborne illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control identified 95 foodborne illness outbreaks in the United States potentially associated with fairs, festivals, and temporary …

Numerical Study Of Klebanov-Tarnopolsky Models, Nathaniel Avish Jan 2020

Numerical Study Of Klebanov-Tarnopolsky Models, Nathaniel Avish

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In this thesis we perform a numerical study of the $O(N_1)\times O(N_2)\times O(N_3)$ Klebanov-Tarnopolsky (KT) model, whose large-$N$ limit is expected to admit a simple gravitational dual under the AdS/CFT correspondence. We study the $25$ special cases of the KT model which have fewer than $2^{13}$ states. For all such systems we diagonalize the Hamiltonian matrices, identify sectors which have specific charges, and compute the number of singlet states. Our findings support prior evidence that the KT model can be exactly diagonalized and therefore may have an exact analytic solution, which would be helpful in learning more about the AdS/CFT …

The Guardian Of The Genome : Regulation Of The Enhancer Networks Governing The P53-Mediated Stress Response, Allison Catizone Jan 2020

The Guardian Of The Genome : Regulation Of The Enhancer Networks Governing The P53-Mediated Stress Response, Allison Catizone

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

After fertilization in vertebrates, cells work to build organs, tissues and begin to rapidly differentiate and proliferate. This process is the orchestration of finely tuned signals and perfectly timed gene expression patterns. The first step in gene expression, transcription, is governed by proteins known as transcription factors (TF). TFs are responsible for binding to DNA, altering chromatin structure, and driving activation of other genes based on the organism’s needs. Once the process of development is complete, organisms shift their resources to maintaining homeostasis. Humans regularly encounter outside stressors such as UV radiation, pollution, allergens, and drugs. Cells also accumulate mutations …

Statistical Methods To Unravel Cortical Mechanism Of Perception And Response To Auditory Stimuli, Ladan Moheimanian Jan 2020

Statistical Methods To Unravel Cortical Mechanism Of Perception And Response To Auditory Stimuli, Ladan Moheimanian

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Behavioral responses to auditory stimuli have a critical role in our daily activities. The perception of these stimuli and the generation of appropriate behavioral responses requires the interaction of thousands of neurons in the auditory-motor pathways in the brain. Despite their importance, still many neuroscientific questions about these interactions are remained to be answered. This may result from the limitations of brain recordings as well as statistical methods to analyze brain recordings. In this dissertation, I investigated underlying mechanisms that govern these neural interactions in the auditory-motor pathways using novel statistical techniques applied to the brain recordings from the surface …

Development Of Small Molecule Antibiotics Against A Conserved Rna Gene Regulatory Element In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Ville Yrjö Petteri Väre Jan 2020

Development Of Small Molecule Antibiotics Against A Conserved Rna Gene Regulatory Element In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Ville Yrjö Petteri Väre

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Bacterial infections and the rise of antibiotic resistance, especially multidrug resistant strains, have generated a clear need for discovery of novel therapeutics. Most antibiotics in use today are derivatives of previous antibiotics to which resistance mechanisms already exist, and traditionally they have a single target: either a protein or rRNA. Gram-positive bacteria regulate the expression of several essential genes or operons using a mechanism called the T-box. The T-box is a structurally conserved riboswitch-like gene regulator in the 5’-untranslated region (UTR) of numerous essential genes of Gram-positive bacteria. T-boxes are stabilized by cognate, unacylated tRNA ligands, allowing the formation of …

Knowing Totality : Capitalism Across Consciousness And Community In Kim, Nostromo, Sons And Lovers, And Ulysses, Jessica Manry Jan 2020

Knowing Totality : Capitalism Across Consciousness And Community In Kim, Nostromo, Sons And Lovers, And Ulysses, Jessica Manry

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Knowing Totality reads literary portraits of consciousness at the level of capitalist totality. The largest level of the project argues that there is a formal discord in certain twentieth-century novels between “knowability,” or an accepted community narrative, and character “consciousness,” which reaches beyond it. I locate within these formal breaks social and historical contradictions that characterize capital, where seemingly content-based issues in the texts—Rudyard Kipling’s Kim, Joseph Conrad’s Nostromo, D.H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers, and James Joyce’s Ulysses—manifest themselves at the level of form. The pairings place the novels in dialectical conversation, highlighting characters on the periphery of communities that …

Dynamical Downscaling Of Near-Term Climate Variability And Change For The Main Hawaiian Islands Using Wrf, Katrina Marie Fandrich Jan 2020

Dynamical Downscaling Of Near-Term Climate Variability And Change For The Main Hawaiian Islands Using Wrf, Katrina Marie Fandrich

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

As climate models continue to improve, the demand from resource managers and decision-makers for more accurate climate projections is increasing. However, natural climate variability poses a limit to the confidence in regional climate change projections, particularly for the mid-21st century. The unique geographic location of the Hawaiian Islands and its regional climate provide a challenging opportunity for climate modelers. The goal of this project is to examine both the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and anthropogenic climate change for their impacts on near-term rainfall and temperature projections for the Hawaiian Islands. Of primary interest are the questions 1) is there a …

Effects Of Neuronal Glutamate Transporters On Repetitive And Time Sensitive Reward-Based Learning And Behavior, Benjamin Andrew Bennink Jan 2020

Effects Of Neuronal Glutamate Transporters On Repetitive And Time Sensitive Reward-Based Learning And Behavior, Benjamin Andrew Bennink

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The basal ganglia are a collection of subcortical nuclei responsible for action selection. The striatum is the primary input of the basal ganglia and forms two distinct feedback loops with the motor cortex. Within the striatum, projection neurons receive cortical inputs via glutamatergic synapses, and modulation via cholinergic synapses and dopaminergic projections. These projection neurons create two separate pathways to the principal output of the basal ganglia, the substantia nigra pars reticulata. The striatum uses these two pathways to filter cortical motor inputs and integrate those inputs with dopaminergic motor and reward inputs to determine action selection output. The GABAergic …

Big, Black, And Strong : Does Identification With The Strong Black Woman Archetype Strengthen The Association Between Racism-Related Stress And Emotional Eating?, Shantel Lorraine Powell

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Despite extensive research on the adverse impact of racism-related stressors on the health and well-being of people of color (Broman, Mavaddat, & Hsu, 2000; Carter, 2007; Klonoff, Landrine, & Ullman, 1999; Noh & Kaspar, 2003; Pieterse, Carter, & Ray, 2013; Utsey & Payne, 2000), little is known about the influence of racism-related stressors on the eating behaviors of Black women. The present study extended the limited literature on this topic by examining the possible contribution of cultural attitudes associated with the Strong Black Women archetype on the relation between racism-related stressors and emotional eating behaviors.

Haemoparasite Infection And Immunogenetic Diversity In A Clade Of North American Songbirds, Naima Starkloff Jan 2020

Haemoparasite Infection And Immunogenetic Diversity In A Clade Of North American Songbirds, Naima Starkloff

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The persistence of an organism in a particular habitat is mediated by a complex interplay of abiotic and biotic interactions. These interactions become especially complicated for a vector-transmitted parasite as its persistence relies on its ability to colonize both ectothermic and endothermic host organisms. Host factors, rather than environmental factors, have been highlighted as key predictors of the diversity and prevalence of avian haemosporidians (malaria parasites and relatives) globally. The range of a parasite is limited by its host specificity as well as the community of hosts present. In addition, as haemosporidian infections typically have negative fitness consequences on hosts, …

The Method In The Madwoman : Functions Of Female Madness And Feminized Liminality In Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, And "The Yellow Wallpaper", Ivy Elizabeth Poitras

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This critical thesis explores how three literary portrayals of “madness” in female characters of the mid-to-late 19th century written by women writers (Bertha Mason of Jane Eyre, Catherine Earnshaw of Wuthering Heights, and the Narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper”) operate as instruments within their work to provide commentary on the anxieties, fears, and ideological stereotypes of women and femininity of the era, as well as contradictions and concepts pertaining to confinement, the female body, gendered Gothic tropes, and societal oppression. The significance of this analysis lies in the consistency and endurance of these issues as they withstand modern development, making …

Single-Domain Alpaca Antibodies That Disrupt Ricin Toxin Uptake And Trafficking In Mammalian Cells, Amanda Yee Poon Jan 2020

Single-Domain Alpaca Antibodies That Disrupt Ricin Toxin Uptake And Trafficking In Mammalian Cells, Amanda Yee Poon

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Ricin is a member of the ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) family of toxins found throughout the plant and microbial worlds. In its mature form, ricin is a 65 kDa glycoprotein consisting of two subunits, RTA and RTB, joined by a single disulfide bond. RTA (267 amino acids) is an RNA N-glycosidase that mediates the depurination of a universally conserved residue within the Sarcin-ricin loop (SRL) ribosomal RNA element. RTB is a galactose-/N-acetylgalactosamine-specific lectin that facilitates attachment, endocytosis, and intracellular trafficking of ricin in mammalian cells. Following endocytosis, ricin is routed to the trans-Golgi network (TGN) and then shuttled to the endoplasmic …

The Obligation Of Promises, Toan Tran Jan 2020

The Obligation Of Promises, Toan Tran

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In my dissertation I discuss the historical and philosophical significance of the commonplace moral phenomenon of promising and I lay out the essential features of a promise. I claim that promises have five features; they produce a moral obligation, they are directed toward another individual who holds the right to demand action and is the one wronged in case of failure, they are successful only if there is uptake, and finally that they are self-imposed. My discussion of the puzzle created by these features starts in David Hume and extends into David Owens. The need to resolve this puzzle in …

Idealist And Materialist Approaches To Abolition In Uncle Tom's Cabin And The Daughter Of Adoption, Jillian Shea Jan 2020

Idealist And Materialist Approaches To Abolition In Uncle Tom's Cabin And The Daughter Of Adoption, Jillian Shea

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Sentimentalism was a popular aesthetic, moral, political, and literary movement in the 18th and 19th centuries in the United States and England, and both Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) and John Thelwall’s The Daughter of Adoption (1801) use sentimentalism in their attempts to advocate for the abolition of slavery. Scholars such as Lauren Berlant critique sentimentalism, specifically Stowe’s use of sentimentalism, for its potential to make structural problems appear as if they can be assuaged by personal change, and I situate this understanding of sentimentalism within an idealist framework, or a framework that primarily emphasizes subjectivity’s role in …

Interactions Between Jefferson County Iroquoian Women And Men As Explored Through Social Network Analysis Of Pottery And Pipe Decorative Motif Traits, Jessica L. Vavrasek

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Pottery and pipe decorative motifs are generally thought to change across time, space, and group affiliation. While pipes and pottery have been extensively study using various methods, they have only recently been studied in present-day New York, southern Ontario, and Quebec (Northern Iroquoia) using social network analysis. Analyses to date have primarily focused on Pan-Iroquoian networks rather than on regions within Northern Iroquoia. To better understand the Jefferson County Iroquoians living in and around present-day Jefferson County, New York, social network analysis methods have begun to be utilized to analyze pottery and pipe decorative motifs to elucidate village interactions within …

Toxic Trace Elements In Follicular Fluid, Oxidative Stress, And In Vitro Fertilization (Ivf) Outcomes, Celeste Danielle Butts Jan 2020

Toxic Trace Elements In Follicular Fluid, Oxidative Stress, And In Vitro Fertilization (Ivf) Outcomes, Celeste Danielle Butts

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Exposures to environmental contaminants, including non-essential toxic trace elements, may be associated with in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. Follicular fluid (FF) envelops the developing oocyte, offering a “snapshot” of the oocyte microenvironment. FF may better estimate trace element concentrations associated with IVF outcomes than more commonly employed blood and urine biomarkers of exposure. Hence, FF concentrations of four widespread non-essential toxic trace elements (arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead) were investigated in relation to a spectrum of IVF endpoints in n=56 women undergoing IVF. Antioxidant activity was explored as an intervening variable and dietary exposure sources of non-essential toxic trace elements …
