Characterization And Use Of Pathogen Specific Bacteriophages To Reduce The Viability Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Contamination On Fresh Produce, Badrinath Vengarai Jagannathan
Characterization And Use Of Pathogen Specific Bacteriophages To Reduce The Viability Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Contamination On Fresh Produce, Badrinath Vengarai Jagannathan
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Fresh produce is one of the most common sources of food-borne outbreaks, involving various pathogenic microorganisms such as Escherichia coli. Recent outbreaks have clearly shown that post-harvest washing has limited effectiveness on decontaminating produce and may contribute to cross-contamination of produce due to various limitations. Excessive use of sanitizers and antibiotics has also led to the development of many antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that have made the food industry more vulnerable.
Bacteriophages are a bacterial viruses that can selectively infect and replicate within bacteria leading to cell lyse and death. Bacteriophages have become widely recognized due to their ability …
The Economics Of Milk Quality Management Practices And Milk Pricing In Simulated United States Dairy Herds, Derek Thomas Nolan
The Economics Of Milk Quality Management Practices And Milk Pricing In Simulated United States Dairy Herds, Derek Thomas Nolan
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Mastitis is considered one of the most common and costly diseases in the dairy industry. Intramammary infection status at a herd level is measured using somatic cell count (SCC). Understanding the total cost of an elevated somatic cell count can help influence dairy farmers to lower SCC and select management practices to produce higher quality milk. The first objective of our research was to determine if the cost of an elevated somatic cell count to farms can be decreased through the adoption of management practices with varying expenses. Using stochastic simulation modeling, the adoption of three differently priced management practices …
Pop-Up Potential: The Effect Of Regulatory Laws On The Innovation Of Pop-Up Restaurants, Alexandra Lizano
Pop-Up Potential: The Effect Of Regulatory Laws On The Innovation Of Pop-Up Restaurants, Alexandra Lizano
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
Pop-up restaurants have risen in popularity over the past decade in the United States. As used in this Comment, a pop-up restaurant is when an existing restaurant space temporarily loans that space to another chef or restaurant for a limited period of time. This Comment seeks to explore the potential benefits and exploit the drawbacks of pop-up restaurants as property solutions in large cities. Pop-up restaurants thrive in the landscape of the sharing economy, and as such, legal scholars pose that it is imperative to understand this new type of economic scheme to efficiently regulate the entities within it. The …

Of Mosquitoes And "Moral Convictions" In The Age Of Zika: How The Trump Administration's Gutting Of The Affordable Care Act's Contraceptive Mandate Jeopardizes Women's And Children's Health, Linda C. Fentiman
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
The Trump Administration’s efforts to undo the contraceptive mandate, a key component of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), threaten a major public health emergency, as well as the rule of law and separation of powers. The Trump Administration’s Rules greatly expand the grounds for exemption from the contraceptive mandate: they allow even publicly traded corporations to assert religious beliefs as a ground for exemption and exempt all employers except publicly traded corporations from compliance with the contraceptive mandate if they hold “moral convictions” in opposition to contraception. By denying women access to effective, affordable contraception, these Rules increase the odds …
Securities Regulation And Social Media, Seth C. Oranburg
Securities Regulation And Social Media, Seth C. Oranburg
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
Federal securities regulation originally divided corporate finance into two neat categories, public and private. In 1933, private financing was limited to “sophisticated” investors but otherwise lightly regulated. Public financing became heavily regulated. In 1982, the SEC introduced Reg D, which introduced the concept of “general solicitation” to clarify the distinction between public and private offerings. Reg D is well understood to prohibit newspaper advertisements and permit direct solicitations to venture capital investors. This enabled great wealth consolidation in regions like Silicon Valley while effectively banning general solicitations in private offerings.
Now, social media communication challenges the definition of “general solicitation.” …

Guided by the investment policy statement, our team's focus was on making appropriate investment decisions based on the portfolio's overarching objectives. This year, we were mindful of protecting the value of the portfolio during periods of economic decline. Achieving this objective will allow us to generate cash to support on-going donations to Crummer's scholarship program. In a time of unprecedented economic uncertainty, we have created an economic outlook for the rest of 2020 through Q1 2021. We gathered information, studied economic indicators, and carefully watched the …
Finding The Growth Rate Of A Tumor, Christine Staat
Finding The Growth Rate Of A Tumor, Christine Staat
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The Gompertz method is used to analyze the growing glioblastoma data and estimate how accurate the results of growth over time are. The Gompertz curve is expressed as V(t) = αe-βe-γt. The data from the tumor is graphed in Excel along with the values from the Gompertz equation. Excel solver is used to assist in determining the constant values of α, β, and γ. The data of the tumor is overall very close to the outcome of the Gompertz model following a sigmoidal “S” curve.
Role Of Paleomagnetism In The Construction Of Earth’S Geographic Past, Stephanie Robinson
Role Of Paleomagnetism In The Construction Of Earth’S Geographic Past, Stephanie Robinson
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
Rocks have the ability to preserve magnetic information used in determining past geographic formations. The purpose of this report is to determine the past location of a site from a given data set’s magnetic information and the calculations found through their application to paleomagnetism. Magnetic information includes the rock sample’s location and concentration of trace magnetic particles which were used to find declination and inclination on site. The sample’s paleolatitude and paleolongitude are calculated using trigonometric equations that are derived using calculus. After a statistical analysis, these results are compared to the present day’s magnetic poles to determine the past …

Empress Theophanu: The Politics Of Power At The Intersection Of Byzantium And The Ottonian Empire, Harper J. Norris
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis seeks to theorize the rhetoric, power dynamics, agency, and rulership of Theophanu and contextualize it through the frame of an intersection of the Byzantine and Ottonian political culture. By analyzing the unique sources surrounding Theophanu – from charters written during her consortship to chronicles written about her posthumously – this thesis seeks to push scholarship to examining Theophanu at the intersection of these two hegemonic cultures. This thesis will analyze the rhetoric of transgression surrounding the empress, the politics of power in the Ottonian court, as well as the gender of Theophanu to bring a nuanced frame of …

The Eyes And Ears Of The Nation: America's First Spy Ring, Eric Topolewski
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the early and smaller espionage tactics during the American Revolution and compare them to the established Culper Ring. George Washington, the American general and later president, and Benjamin Tallmadge, the Director of Military Intelligence during the war, looked for a way to revolutionize espionage at the time. Prior to the Culper Ring, espionage was done on a small scale. Single spies were the most common form of espionage. Washington and Tallmadge knew they needed something new and worked to create something that would last and become sustainable. They were able to create …

Representation In The Story: The Social Impact Of Diversity In Transmedia, Tiffany S. Tanaka-Cooper
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to take a more profound and nuanced look into the effects of diversity in transmedia storytelling (also known as transmedia narrative or multiplatform storytelling) on society, more specifically, how the representation in these stories affect the minority groups that interact with transmedia. This thesis investigates the depiction of minority groups in transmedia storytelling and the influence of identifiable characters and plotlines. The research and following interviews I have engaged in will encapsulate into a screenplay set in a fictional court that offers the discourse of "forced diversity" within the transmedia narrative: whether or not …

Macho Remixes: A Collection Of Writings, Daniel A. Hernandez
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Macho Remixes: A Collection of Writings is a thesis containing short stories, poetry, and a personal essay that discuss the matter of toxic masculinity through the representations of male and macho sexuality in the Latinx culture. It covers depictions of how Latinx men have been stereotyped in today’s society. The works included here are my own perspectives of what masculinity means to me as a young multicultural male navigating life. Throughout these texts, I—my speakers and narrators—grapple with understanding the conflicting and oppressive expectations drawn from my roots, particularly those based in Latinx culture. The purpose is considering the negative …
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Echoes: Digital Political Discourse And Vectors Of Ideological Propagation, Devon Razey
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Echoes: Digital Political Discourse And Vectors Of Ideological Propagation, Devon Razey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This study analyzes the discursive strategies used by participants in online non-political spaces to negotiate and propagate political ideologies. Through the use of Critical Discourse Analysis in rhetorical studies (Huckin et. al.), this study produced a theory of political ideological vectors in digitally connective social network platforms. The analysis uses discussions taken from Twitter and Reddit surrounding the introduction of an Asian female character, Nagini, in the Fantastic Beats: Crimes of Grindelwald trailer immediately following its release in September 2018. Ultimately, this study found that participants are less likely to isolate themselves within politically congenial echo chambers than previously theorized …

R. V. Comeau: A Crack In The Wall?, Christopher D. Bredt, Ewa Krajewska, Ben Shakinovsky
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
In 2012, one man’s journey from New Brunswick to Quebec in pursuit of cheap beer sparked a fierce constitutional debate about the role of interprovincial trade in Canada. In a booze run that has since made Canadian legal history, G rard Comeau drove from his home in Tracadie, New Brunswick to the Listiguj First Nation Indian Reserve in Quebec, where alcohol is sold at a cheap price. While there, he stocked up on 15 cases of beer and three bottles of liquor, purchased from three different stores. Unbeknownst to him, Mr. Comeau had been under surveillance in his sojourn into …
Whose Right Is It Anyway? Adjudicating Charter Rights In The Context Of Multiple Rights Holders, Ryan Liss
Whose Right Is It Anyway? Adjudicating Charter Rights In The Context Of Multiple Rights Holders, Ryan Liss
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
Many of the rights and freedoms prescribed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Charter) protect aspects of life that rights holders engage in collaboratively, rather than in isolation. Our protection from unreasonable search and seizure extends to houses that we may inhabit with family members or roommates. Our freedom of expression and religion prohibits state censorship of novels co-written by multiple authors and prohibits restriction on religious rites practised as a community. Our freedom of association guarantees the rights of multiple members of a union to collectively bargain together. Our right to a speedy trial applies to the …
Sequential Design As A Tool For Exploration: Perception Of The Unknown, Emily Eskanos
Sequential Design As A Tool For Exploration: Perception Of The Unknown, Emily Eskanos
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The purpose of this piece is to use narrative design to explore academic and philosophical concepts effectively. Unlike written papers, or graphs and models, the visual aspects of this piece are not merely carriers of the concept, but are integral parts of the process of exploring them, so I sought out to create piece of work that put that idea to the test. The research delved into the realms of both philosophy and design. Philosophy because, like a goblet without wine, my medium was empty without an idea to explore. Yet without design, the concept was merely stagnant information, instead …
Human Immunodeficiency Virus: A Literary Review On Gene Editing, Cytotherapy, And Medicinal Marijuana As Therapies For Hiv., Paula Moreno
Human Immunodeficiency Virus: A Literary Review On Gene Editing, Cytotherapy, And Medicinal Marijuana As Therapies For Hiv., Paula Moreno
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) affects about 40 million people world-wide; there is currently no cure for HIV or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This paper will begin by explaining viruses/retroviruses and HIV infection/progression at the molecular, cellular, and organismal level. Common drug therapy will be mentioned, followed by in-depth discussions on the processes of three different therapies that combat HIV-1 at either the molecular, cellular, or organismal level. Once the virus has been integrated in the genome, antiretroviral therapies (ART) begin. At the molecular level, gene silencing has the power to essentially “shut down” or “cut out” genes from the integrated …

This study measures methane fluxes in tropical agroforestry soils with relation to rainfall and temperature to determine agroforestry’s uses as a potential methane sink within the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) program. Agroforestry is a sustainable agriculture method which uses the intermingling of crops and trees for eventual timber harvesting. Agroforestry is known to provide carbon sequestration benefits and food security to small communities, while maximizing soil health. Belize is participating in the REDD+ program, where the role of methane is currently unclear. Methane samples from Maya Mountain Research Farm were collected several times per week during …
Adult Environmental Education: Active Vs. Passive Learning Pedagogy, Kelly Mckenna
Adult Environmental Education: Active Vs. Passive Learning Pedagogy, Kelly Mckenna
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
From wildfires to coral bleaching, the global effects of climate change are difficult to ignore. Unfortunately, the number of environmental education (EE) programs that target adults in the United States is lacking. Adults have the biggest impact on the environment and the greatest ability to make positive environmental changes and therefore, the need to expand environmental education for adults is imperative. In order to contribute to improved environmental quality, adults need to be exposed to environmental problems and to be taught ways to reduce their environmental impacts. Existing research highlights the difficulties when attempting to include adults in environmental education …
