Age Differences In Hippocampal Glutamate Modulation During Associative Learning And Memory: A Proton Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1h Fmrs) Study, Chaitali Anand Jan 2020

Age Differences In Hippocampal Glutamate Modulation During Associative Learning And Memory: A Proton Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1h Fmrs) Study, Chaitali Anand

Wayne State University Dissertations

Episodic and associative memory decline is one of the earliest cognitive impairments in normal aging and among the defining cognitive features of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Since, age-related cognitive decline gradually devolves into AD, with neuropathology preceding cognitive changes by many years, the identification of biomarkers of early disease progression is crucial. Reduction in glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter involved in associative memory, in key brain regions such as the hippocampus, has been theorized as one of the cellular mechanisms underlying cognitive decline in aging and AD. A few neuroimaging studies that demonstrated a link between older adults’ weaker cognitive performance …

Testosterone And Interpersonal Attraction: A Placebo-Controlled Design, Stefan M. Goetz Jan 2020

Testosterone And Interpersonal Attraction: A Placebo-Controlled Design, Stefan M. Goetz

Wayne State University Dissertations

Testosterone has long been implicated as a neuroendocrinological mechanism in the expression of reproductive strategies. Humans the world over form and maintain pair-bonds suggesting that pair-bonds may serve to enhance reproductive fitness. However, infidelity is a perennial threat to these bonds. The data in humans suggests that testosterone is associated with mate-seeking but may be detrimental to relationship maintenance. However, past work has relied on correlational studies and additional findings from nonhuman animal models suggest that acute changes rather than baseline concentrations in testosterone may in fact protect extant pair-bonds. The present research sought to test the causal role of …

Development Of Specific Natural Bacterial Beta-Glucuronidase Inhibitors For Reducing Irinotecan-Associated Diarrhea, Fei Yang Jan 2020

Development Of Specific Natural Bacterial Beta-Glucuronidase Inhibitors For Reducing Irinotecan-Associated Diarrhea, Fei Yang

Wayne State University Dissertations

Irinotecan is a derived compound from the plant alkaloid camptothecin (CPT). It specifically inhibits eukaryotic DNA enzyme topoisomerase I. Irinotecan was approved by the FDA as the second-line therapy for metastatic colon or rectal cancer in 1996. However, one of its leading side effects is diarrhea. It has been reported that up to 88% of treated patients were suffering from diarrhea and 31% of cases with grade 3 or 4 diarrhea. Irinotecan is metabolized into SN-38G in the liver, then SN-38G is excreted to the intestinal tract and deconjugated back to SN-38 by bacterial β-glucuronidase. The free SN-38 in the …

Computational Analysis Of Oxidative Stress In Endothelial Dysfunction: Insights On The Role Of Tetrahydrobiopterin, Ascorbate And Glutathione, Sheetal Kedar Panday Jan 2020

Computational Analysis Of Oxidative Stress In Endothelial Dysfunction: Insights On The Role Of Tetrahydrobiopterin, Ascorbate And Glutathione, Sheetal Kedar Panday

Wayne State University Dissertations

Oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction are reported in the cardiovascular and neurovascular diseases. Oxidative stress is caused due to an increase in the generation of reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS) and incapacity of antioxidant systems to eliminate ROS and RNS. Endothelial dysfunction is characterized by a reduction in nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. NO is constitutively produced by enzyme endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). A reduction in tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), which is an essential cofactor of eNOS, can lead to eNOS uncoupling. There is complex interplay between the ROS/RNS and antioxidant system underlying pathophysiologies of vascular diseases, however our quantitative …

The State Of Traditional Albanian Kilims, Their Motifs And Narratives, Alexis Zoto Jan 2020

The State Of Traditional Albanian Kilims, Their Motifs And Narratives, Alexis Zoto

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Albania is a cultural crossroads. Its history is rooted in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. It has been part of the Republic of Venice and part of the Ottoman Empire. It has maintained its own identity and language in spite of many occupiers. Like many of its neighbors, it also has a rich weaving tradition influenced by hundreds of years under Ottoman rule. However, the knowledge of the old ways of this craft is quickly dying out. There are splits in knowledge and documented information between pre-communist Albania and Communist Albania and post-Communist Albania.

In the mid twentieth century …

Ashfall Fossil Beds: From Waterhole To Rhino Barn, Sandy Mosel Jan 2020

Ashfall Fossil Beds: From Waterhole To Rhino Barn, Sandy Mosel

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

Twelve million years ago a volcanic super-eruption in what is now southwestern Idaho created an enormous ashfall that blanketed the Great Plains with several inches of volcanic ash, devastating the local wildlife. Evidence of this geologic event lies within the hills of the Niobrara River Valley in northeast Nebraska, at a place aptly named the Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park. Located near the tiny village of Royal, the Ashfall Park has been developed around a waterhole where animals succumbed after breathing in the volcanic dust. Buried deeply by windblown volcanic ash in the weeks following the eruption, the skeletons …

Local Government Law, Russell A. Britt, Michael C. Pruett, Jennifer D. Herzog, Brittanie Browning, Jacob Stalvey O'Neal, Pearson Cunningham

Mercer Law Review

Another banner year for local governments. A gubernatorial veto preserves, for now, the Georgia Supreme Court’s decision in Lathrop v. Deal that held sovereign immunity bars declaratory and injunctive relief claims against the state, including challenges to constitutionality under the state constitution. In the world of tax, some clarification on appraisal methodologies feature alongside cases notable for their unique procedural postures. A Georgia Supreme Court decision fleshes out what is required for a “meaningful” hearing to be afforded under zoning procedures law. Last year’s developments in the Open Meetings and Open Records Acts continue to bear fruit, and statutory construction …

Toward A Symbiotic Perspective On Public Health: Recognizing The Ambivalence Of Microbes In The Anthropocene, S. Sariola, Scott F. Gilbert

Biology Faculty Works

Microbes evolve in complex environments that are often fashioned, in part, by human desires. In a global perspective, public health has played major roles in structuring how microbes are perceived, cultivated, and destroyed. The germ theory of disease cast microbes as enemies of the body and the body politic. Antibiotics have altered microbial development by providing stringent natural selection on bacterial species, and this has led to the formation of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. Public health perspectives such as “Precision Public Health” and “One Health” have recently been proposed to further manage microbial populations. However, neither of these take into account …

Nanoparticle-Mediated Controlled Myocardial Drug Delivery: A New Treatment For Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Michelle Katherine Mcgrath Copeland Jan 2020

Nanoparticle-Mediated Controlled Myocardial Drug Delivery: A New Treatment For Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Michelle Katherine Mcgrath Copeland

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a genetic disease of the sarcomere, resulting in overgrowth of the septum that separates the left and right ventricles. HCM can affect as many as 1/200 people, making it the most common genetic cardiomyopathy in the general population, as well as the most common cause of sudden cardiac death (SCD). In severe HCM cases, cardiothoracic surgeons perform septal myectomy to remove the excess tissue. However, many patients are poor surgical candidates and require another, less invasive treatment option. In these cases, alcohol septal ablation (ASA) is performed. With ASA, cardiologists deliver pure alcohol through a catheter …

Price Determinants Of Stock-Type Horses Sold At Public Online Auctions, Michelle Kibler, Jada M. Thompson Jan 2020

Price Determinants Of Stock-Type Horses Sold At Public Online Auctions, Michelle Kibler, Jada M. Thompson

Faculty Publications - Agriculture

There is a shift in livestock auction sales in consolidation of live markets and movement toward virtual marketplaces. We examine buyer preferences for nonracing stock-type horses sold through virtual auctions to better understand how animals are sold and their valuation. A shift towards online sales of equine has impacted the number of potential buyers through increased exposure to sale horses. Using data collected from online auctions, we estimate factors influencing propensity to sell as well as price determinants in this market platform. We find many factors contribute to the likelihood of a horse selling and to the final sale price.

In this paper we outline the stakeholder-led approaches in the development of biological data products to support effective conservation, management and policy development. The requirements of a broad range of stakeholders and iterative, structured processes framed the development of tools, models and maps that support the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles. By structuring the resultant data products around the emerging biological Essential Ocean Variables, and through the engagement with a broad range of end-users, the EMODnet (European Marine Observation and Data Network) Biology project has delivered a suite of demonstration data products. These products are presented in the …

Climate warming is expected to intensify hypoxia in the California Current System (CCS), threatening its diverse and productive marine ecosystem. We analyzed past regional variability and future changes in the Metabolic Index (Φ), a species-specific measure of the environment’s capacity to meet temperature-dependent organismal oxygen demand. Across the traits of diverse animals, Φ exhibits strong seasonal to interdecadal variations throughout the CCS, implying that resident species already experience large fluctuations in available aerobic habitat. For a key CCS species, northern anchovy, the long-term biogeographic distribution and decadal fluctuations in abundance are both highly coherent with aerobic habitat volume. Ocean warming …

Ocean Deoxygenation And Copepods: Coping With Oxygen Minimum Zone Variability, Karen F. Wishner, Brad Seibel, Dawn Outram

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Increasing deoxygenation (loss of oxygen) of the ocean, including expansion of oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), is a potentially important consequence of global warming. We examined present-day variability of vertical distributions of 23 calanoid copepod species in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) living in locations with different water column oxygen profiles and OMZ intensity (lowest oxygen concentration and its vertical extent in a profile). Copepods and hydrographic data were collected in vertically stratified day and night MOCNESS (Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System) tows (0–1000 m) during four cruises over a decade (2007–2017) that sampled four ETNP locations: Costa …

Shellfish Cytogenetics To Domesticate Oysters And Other Shellfish, Michael A. Rice Jan 2020

Shellfish Cytogenetics To Domesticate Oysters And Other Shellfish, Michael A. Rice

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

One of the key problems faced by oyster farmers in temperate regions of the world is that the condition of the oysters, or the relative ‘fatness’ of the meat, changes throughout the growing season in response to changes in water temperature and the seasonal availability of phytoplankton in the water as food for the oysters.

Crying Out Together: Forming A Hermeneutic Of Powerful Suffering, Harley Burgess Jan 2020

Crying Out Together: Forming A Hermeneutic Of Powerful Suffering, Harley Burgess

MA in Religion Theses

Process theology, along with its connection to questions of suffering and theodicy, presents a perspective that is largely absent within biblical scholarship. Similarly, a lack of clear cohesion with the biblical text is an evident critique of process theology. A hermeneutic that is directly informed by process-oriented passibilism meets a need that is present in both biblical scholarship and process theology, allowing for a deeper understanding of biblical depictions of suffering. This thesis aims to incorporate the theological conclusions of passibilist process theology into a new hermeneutical strategy that will allow for a more comprehensive examination of suffering in the …

Coastal wetlands, such as saltmarshes and mangroves that fringe transitional waters, deliver important ecosystem services that support human development. Coastal wetlands are complex social-ecological systems that occur at all latitudes, from polar regions to the tropics. This overview covers wetlands in five continents. The wetlands are of varying size, catchment size, human population and stages of economic development. Economic sectors and activities in and around the coastal wetlands and their catchments exert multiple, direct pressures. These pressures affect the state of the wetland environment, ecology and valuable ecosystem services. All the coastal wetlands were found to be affected in some …

Ticks On Lizards: Parasite-Host Interactions Of The Southern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria Multicarinata) In Washington State, Emma Houghton Jan 2020

Ticks On Lizards: Parasite-Host Interactions Of The Southern Alligator Lizard (Elgaria Multicarinata) In Washington State, Emma Houghton

Undergraduate Honors Theses

I investigated interactions between ectoparasites (ticks) and their host, the southern alligator lizard (Elgaria multicarinata). Alligator lizards are capable of complement-mediated killing of the Lyme disease spirochete carried by ticks and may potentially reduce Lyme disease prevalence by cleansing pathogenic organisms from ticks. Despite this, little is known about host-parasite dynamics in alligator lizards. My goals were to 1) assess patterns of tick presence (i.e. parasite load) on alligator lizards and 2) investigate potential negative effects of ticks on alligator lizards. I sampled lizards during the summer of 2019 near Catherine Creek, along the Columbia River Gorge in southern Washington. …

Escaping Suburbia: A Study In Film Auteur Pertaining To Tim Burton And The Coen Brothers, Morgan Bedard

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This project will focus on the concept of “Auteur Theory” which is a particular film theory branch that emphasizes the filmmaker as the “author” of their work. “Auteur” is a French word meaning “author” in the sense of a person holding complete creative control. Studying Auteur Theory allows for viewers to better understand the filmmaker as a person by connecting visual patterns to the auteurs’ own life. The “filmmaker” in Auteur Theory is defined as the director and they must exercise almost or complete control of all aspects of a film. Distinct visual characteristics as well as repeated casting of …

Investigating The Avian Species Composition, Diversity, And Abundance Of Engelhorn Pond, Kiana Rose

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Central Washington University’s Engelhorn Pond contains important habitats for many organisms, particularly migratory birds, and is a valuable resource for students. However, little information is available about the wildlife inhabiting the pond. The pond’s discrete location means that many people are unaware of its existence. In addition, the pond is threatened by a number of anthropogenic sources, including chemical runoff, garbage, and feral cats. By using point counts, a common ornithological survey technique, I recorded the bird species present at the pond during all seasons of the year. I collected data using point counts during 13 visits from June of …
