Rare Event Detection Of Somatic Pdgfrb Activating Variants In A Mosaic And Aneurysm Patient, Daphne Salime Toglia
Rare Event Detection Of Somatic Pdgfrb Activating Variants In A Mosaic And Aneurysm Patient, Daphne Salime Toglia
Theses & ETDs
The role that somatic genetic variants have towards the development of intracranial-aneurysm formation is unknown. The Ferreira lab, at the University of Washington Medical Center, identified a 23-year old man with progressive, right-sided intracranial aneurysms that were lateralized and who had pigmentation of his skin localized to his right side. He underwent a succession of genetic evaluations for known connective-tissue disorders, but these were unrevealing. Initial paired-sample exome sequencing between blood and fibroblasts derived from the patient’s affected areas detected a gain-of-function mutation predicted to cause a p.Tyr562Cys change within the platelet-derived growth factor receptor b gene (PDGFRB). Initial variant-allele …
On The Outside: International Travel, Self-Transformation, And Alienation In Film And Literature, John Sapp
On The Outside: International Travel, Self-Transformation, And Alienation In Film And Literature, John Sapp
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the trope of the “alienated character” as it appears in film and litera ture, and makes proposals regarding how this character type would function in a scenario where international travel and fetishized perceptions of the Other are seen as solutions to the character’s alienation. It demonstrates the application of this scenario to this character type through the creation of a novella draft, while later proposing how the draft can be expanded upon to make the themes of tourism and globalization more meaningful. Ex amples from post-war existentialist literature are used, as well as pieces of travel litera …
Judging With A Sniff: Can Horses Associate Scents With Trained Behaviors?, Aiden Juge
Judging With A Sniff: Can Horses Associate Scents With Trained Behaviors?, Aiden Juge
Theses & ETDs
Past research has shown that horses are able to learn via positive reinforcement-based training and can discriminate between a variety of olfactory stimuli. This study investigates whether horses can learn to respond to olfactory cues with trained behaviors. It was expected that horses would learn to produce specific behaviors in response to olfactory stimuli. Using positive reinforcement, three horses were trained in a set of four head movement behaviors, each associated with a different scent, and subsequently tested via presentation of the scent cues. Results indicated that horses did not learn to associate scents with specific behaviors, but did learn …
Epistemic Limitations And Academic Disciplines: A Virtue Based Approach, Hannah Sine
Epistemic Limitations And Academic Disciplines: A Virtue Based Approach, Hannah Sine
Theses & ETDs
This thesis describes the ways that epistemic limitations shape disciplinary perspectives and demonstrates their effect on interdisciplinary collaboration. I begin by establishing the concept of epistemic limitations as an inevitable force in our cognitive lives. Given that our epistemic capacities will always be confined by some set of limitations, it is important—and in fact, virtuous—to acknowledge them and understand their character. In the existing literature, there are models offered for the virtuous navigation of one’s limitations, specifically dealing with those that are imposed by social standpoints. To give an account of virtue in the academic context, I gather my conceptual …
A Study On The Viability Of 3d Clinorotation As An Accurate Simulator Of Microgravity In Triticum Aestivum L. Cv. Usu Apogee, Matthew Brickhouse
A Study On The Viability Of 3d Clinorotation As An Accurate Simulator Of Microgravity In Triticum Aestivum L. Cv. Usu Apogee, Matthew Brickhouse
Theses & ETDs
The International Space Station (ISS) is a research station where astronauts live and conduct cutting edge space research. While many think the ISS exists in a state of “zero-g”, the station and its inhabitants are actually exposed to “microgravity”, which is broadly defined as, “less than 1 g.” Gravitropism is defined as the growth of a plant in response to the pull of gravity. There is evidence that the standard gravitropic pathway is altered in plants exposed to microgravity. A 3D clinostat is a device consisting of two frames with motors that rotate in perpendicular directions at random, disparate rates. …
A Multispecies Approach To The Intersection Of Hacktivism And Performance Art, Jimi Depriest
A Multispecies Approach To The Intersection Of Hacktivism And Performance Art, Jimi Depriest
Theses & ETDs
The purpose of this thesis is to critique the neoliberal exploitation of science, technology, and media while conceptualizing how hacktivism can be used to disrupt the operations of neoliberal institutions. I will explore how the proletariat can use DIY and decentralized forms of techno scientific creations to fight and dismantle imperialism and devising how these creations can function as tools for catalyzing a post-capitalist society. I will also examine how the relationship between human and nonhuman organisms is continually redefined by abrasive technologies and digital media. I address how hacktivist actions framed as insurrectionary ritualistic practice can alter the digital …
Jrag And Jrop: A Java Design Tool For Determining The Effect Aesthetic Properties Have On User Perceived Professionalism, Kyle Dennison
Jrag And Jrop: A Java Design Tool For Determining The Effect Aesthetic Properties Have On User Perceived Professionalism, Kyle Dennison
Theses & ETDs
This study builds off of the previous academic research for creating professional graphical user interfaces by answering the following two questions. Which aesthetic design elements are perceived as the most professional and can they be used to increase the perceived professionalism of a user interface. Designing for usability is a common practice by companies but they fail to account for the changing perspective of professionalism in computer science oriented users. In this study, participants rated a series of aesthetic element examples in four categories: Font, Shape, Texture, and Feature. They rated each element based on the scales Fun to Technical, …

Better You, Better Us, Better Today: How To Be Good, Not Bad, Jesus Olive
Theses & ETDs
The act of assigning value and judgement towards the things we come across is and always has been an inescapable component of the human experience. Without our judgement, we are totally inept, we would be stuck in directionless states of indecision and random choices. However, when we inappropriately judge and misjudge on others, it can and often does result in immense suffering for those under scrutiny. While our tendency to judge others is assuredly a potential hazard, we still depend on it completely. Therefore, rather than abandon the practice altogether, we should refine it to diminish the harm it can …
Potential For A 'Greener Sense Of Self' : An Exploration Of The Photocatalytic Degradation Of Water Pollutants Via Tio2 Nanoparticles Through A Citizen Science Framework And Its Impact On Environmental Stewardship Attitudes And Scientific Agency, Kristen Patterson
Theses & ETDs
Citizen science is a volunteer framework that has proven itself to be a powerful guide for environmental research, but has often limited volunteer participation to data collection. This thesis explores the potential of developing the citizen science framework in conducting water quality treatment. Chemically, the aim was to determine whether dye sensitization of titanium dioxide nanoparticles could increase their photocatalytic pollutant degradation efficiency. In this, a citizen science initiative was created around this tool and introduced to the Meadows Community Association in Sarasota, Florida, where we partnered to develop the methodology of and collect data for the project to speak …
Exploring The “Phenomenon” Of Female Dominance In Malagasy Lemurs: The World’S Most Endangered Mammalian Group, Maya Owitz Greenberg
Exploring The “Phenomenon” Of Female Dominance In Malagasy Lemurs: The World’S Most Endangered Mammalian Group, Maya Owitz Greenberg
Theses & ETDs
Literature on sex-biased power in nonhuman primates typically portrays male dominance as the baseline assumption, perhaps due to human cultural biases. Yet recent research incorporating a broader range of taxa and a more inclusive framework of social power increasingly sheds light on the true diversity of intersexual power dynamics across species. For example, female-biased power structures are widespread across Malagasy lemurs, representing nearly 30% of all primate species. To expand research into female power in lemurs, the present study investigated patterns of intersexual interactions in two small, captive groups of Mongoose lemurs (Eulemur mongoz), an Adult Group (two males and …
“How Do You Experience Language, Art, And The Body?”: An Exploration Of Trauma And Individualized Therapeutic Possibilities, Cait Matthews
“How Do You Experience Language, Art, And The Body?”: An Exploration Of Trauma And Individualized Therapeutic Possibilities, Cait Matthews
Theses & ETDs
People commonly experience traumatic events that have lasting harmful impressions on the brain and body, yet the mental health care system is structured in a way that does not always easily provide accessible and effective individualized treatments. This study was interested in the relationship between survey participant preferences towards different therapy types and perceptions of experiencing language, art, and the body. Sixty-eight participants in total engaged with the survey; 57 completed up through the therapeutic preferences section; 45 completed the entire survey. The participants were asked if they had ever experienced therapy before, then if they had experienced trauma that …
Bounce For Your Ward: A Grounded Theory Approach Investigating The Role Cultural Intermediation Plays In The Development Of Local Sensibilities In New Orleans Bounce Music, Rosemary Demarco
Theses & ETDs
In this project I consider what role cultural intermediation plays in the development of local sensibilities. I investigated the latent messages in New Orleans Bounce rap through a mixed methods approach of a content analysis and grounded theory. Using a playlist curated specifically for this project by a well-known Bounce DJ in New Orleans, I conducted interviews with him to substantiate my findings from the data analysis and provide a more holistic view of Bounce rap. By applying a mixed methods approach to a traditional content analysis, I triangulated interviews, journal notes, and lyrical data to make sense of messages …

Analysis Of Papain Contents In Over-The-Counter Papaya Enzyme Supplements, Chau Ngo
Theses & ETDs
Over-the-counter (OTC) digestive enzyme supplements containing the papaya protease papain are neither approved nor regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This work aimed to analyze the papain contents and determine the effectiveness of OTC papaya enzyme supplements. Based on the labeled amounts on the packaging of five different products, 4 mg mL-1 and 10 mg mL-1 papain extractions were prepared using a method adapted from a published study by Muharram and Abdel-Kader (2017). Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and a Bradford assay were performed to examine the purity and protein concentration in the supplements. Standard …
Footprints In The Atmosphere: Quantitative Analysis Of Carbon Emissions To Identify The Potential Of Community Climate Action, Meredith Todd
Footprints In The Atmosphere: Quantitative Analysis Of Carbon Emissions To Identify The Potential Of Community Climate Action, Meredith Todd
Theses & ETDs
With the challenges to development presented by the increasing causes and effects of climate change, an important piece to focus on it allowing all people to join the conversation and create a community to solve it. Where the idea of carbon emissions makes limited sense to average people and cannot convey a responsibility to act, carbon footprint measurement can overcome that obstacle and convey the impact of individual habits by distributing carbon emissions on a per capita scale. By comparing the carbon footprints of ecovillages, intentional-ecological communities, to national and global carbon footprints, it is possible to communicate a level …

Galileo once said, “You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him find it within himself.” (Goodreads, 2020). I have often pondered upon how best I could use this advice. I have been an educator for 24 years and have loved every minute of it. During this time, I have seen students of all cadres come and go, but they all have one thing in common - their innate fear of written assessments. In general, students in high school tend to have a different perspective on education than their adult counterparts - they tend to procrastinate, are usually …
Dysfunctional Mitochondrial Biogenesis: A Potential Underlying Cause For Metabolic Diseases, Caroline Ann Hunter
Dysfunctional Mitochondrial Biogenesis: A Potential Underlying Cause For Metabolic Diseases, Caroline Ann Hunter
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Mitochondria are essential organelles that play crucial roles in many aspects of cellular homeostasis. More importantly, the mitochondria are home to the majority of the metabolic pathways within the cell and are responsible for producing most of the cell’s useable energy in the form of adenine triphosphate (ATP) through oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). In mammals, the majority of OXPHOS complex subunits are encoded by nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA); however, 13 core subunits essential for the function of OXPHOS complexes I, III, IV, and V are encoded in the mitochondrial (mt) DNA (mtDNA) and are synthesized within the mitochondria by its own …
Engineering And Optimization Of Phosphate-Responsive Phytase Expression In Pichia Pastoris Yeast For Phytate Hydrolysis, Paul Wai Kei Tsang
Engineering And Optimization Of Phosphate-Responsive Phytase Expression In Pichia Pastoris Yeast For Phytate Hydrolysis, Paul Wai Kei Tsang
School of General Education & Languages (THEi)
Phytate is the major storage form of phosphorus in plants. It is present in cereals and raw materials of vegetable origin used in animal and human diets. However, non-ruminant animals have little phytase activity in their guts and, therefore, cannot digest phytate. As a result, almost all dietary phytate is discharged into the environment, causing phosphorus pollution. Phytate is also considered as an “antinutrient” for its ability to form insoluble and stable complexes with metal ions, thus reducing dietary absorption of essential minerals. It is a dire need to develop sustainable approaches for environmentally-friendly utilization for this valuable and abundant …
The Need For Action: Understanding The Environmental Warnings In Princess Mononoke And Oryx And Crake, Dylan Gregor
The Need For Action: Understanding The Environmental Warnings In Princess Mononoke And Oryx And Crake, Dylan Gregor
Undergraduate Review
In both Margaret Atwood’s novel Oryx and Crake and Hayao Miyazaki’s film Princess Mononoke, we see the fall of humanity and civilization at the hands of humankind, and through them we are able to assess our present and future circumstances, as well as understand our desperate need for a solution. When looking at Atwood’s novel and Miyazaki’s film and assessing their respective genres and the events that take place within their worlds, each one speaks about our own relationship with nature. Princess Mononoke, from the ecocinema genre, sprinkled with dystopian aspects, portrays our current relationship with the natural world and …
Who Is In Your Classroom Library? An Exploration Of Early Childhood Educators’ Usage Of Multicultural Literature In The Classroom, Camille Holts
Who Is In Your Classroom Library? An Exploration Of Early Childhood Educators’ Usage Of Multicultural Literature In The Classroom, Camille Holts
Undergraduate Review
In 2018 it was reported that 27% of children’s books published were about animals, trucks, and other objects and that 50% were based around white characters. This left room for only 1% of published books to be focused on American Indians/First Nations, 5% on Latinx, 7% on Asian Pacific Islanders/ Asian Pacific Americans, and 10% on African/ American characters (University of Wisconsin- Madison School of Education Cooperative Children’s Book Center, 2019). These statistics are alarming considering that books are the cornerstone of our children’s early education. Young children learn through what they see and what is read to them. Through …
