Mosquito Diversity And Positive Pools For The West Nile Virus In Forested Versus Non-Forested Areas, Elizabeth C. Paul Dec 2019

Mosquito Diversity And Positive Pools For The West Nile Virus In Forested Versus Non-Forested Areas, Elizabeth C. Paul

Honors Projects

The West Nile virus (WNV) is one of the leading causes of mosquito borne illness in the United States (CDC, 2018). This virus is a neurotropic pathogen that can cause fever and encephalitis. It is known that the Culex species is the primary vector for WNV. Humans infected with the WNV are typically asymptomatic. There is a small portion of individuals that experience West Nile fever which could include symptoms like high fever, vision loss, and coma (CDC, 2018). Previous studies have shown that mosquitoes tend to favor forests and wetlands (Hay et al., 1998), however, it is unknown if …

A New Age Of Evolution: Protecting The Consumer’S Moral And Legal Right To Know Through The Clear And Transparent Labeling Of All Genetically Modified Foods, Halie M. Evans

Journal of Law and Health

The United States government, until recently, did not require the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). On July 29, 2016, President Barack Obama signed into law the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (NBFDS). This law directs the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to create regulations that require manufacturers to disclose certain bioengineered products on food labels. On December 20, 2018, the USDA released the final regulations for the NBFDS, which requires food manufactures, importers, and certain retailers to ensure bioengineered foods are appropriately disclosed. The final regulations include provisions that will leave the majority of GMO derived foods unlabeled. …

Parens Patriae And Parental Rights: When Should The State Override Parental Medical Decisions?, Elchanan G. Stern

Journal of Law and Health

Alfie Evans was a terminally ill British child whose parents, clinging to hope, were desperately trying to save his life. Hospital authorities disagreed and petitioned the court to enjoin the parents from removing him and taking him elsewhere for treatment. The court stepped in and compelled the hospital to discontinue life support and claimed that further treatment was not in the child’s best interest. This note discusses the heartbreaking stories of Alfie and two other children whose parents’ medical decisions on their behalf were overridden by the court. It argues that courts should never decide that death is in a …

The correlation between undergraduate majors/colleges and their corresponding levels of physical activity was investigated at the University of Texas at Arlington. The relationship between the two subjects of research was determined by the method of a survey, as inspired by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The IPAQ serves to analyze data through a series of questions that determine an individual’s weekly average of vigorous to moderate exercise based on their job, major, leisure activity, and time spent sedentary. Pie charts and tables are presented to depict the survey’s findings of undergraduate major, college, and times of physical and sedentary …

Solid-State Marx Generator Utilizing Igbts And An Isolated Gate Driver System, Benjamin Barnett Dec 2019

Solid-State Marx Generator Utilizing Igbts And An Isolated Gate Driver System, Benjamin Barnett

2019 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Marx generators are pulsed power generators useful for applications such as particle accelerators, agricultural food treatment, medical research and treatments, flashed x-rays, laser welding and ablation, and high-power microwaves. This type of generator is often high voltage, and provides short (nanosecond – microsecond long) pulses of power. Many well-documented designs utilize spark gap switches, but recent advancements in solid-state power electronics components like IGBTs make high-power transistor switching possible. Although limited to low voltage (<10kV) by the current transistor technology, there are clear benefits to this design, namely precise switching timing, allowing for pulse shaping, and RLC ringing reduction. The aim of this Senior engineering project was to build a five-stage solid-state Marx generator that could generate a 100us, 50V, 2500W output pulse. The design discussed in this work details implementation of IGBTs and isolated gate drivers to achieve this goal. The design has been demonstrated to generate the specified pulse with experimentally acceptable losses. In addition, a microcontroller was utilized to control pulse timing to achieve not only the project specifications but to attempt output pulse shaping and display information to a user.

Depression variables were measured via a one-item rating scale for prenatal depression and the Edinburg Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS). A composite variable of this data defined perinatal depression. Adverse infant outcomes included …

Zombie Firms And The Interest Rate Channel, Ismael Guzman-Diaz Dec 2019

Zombie Firms And The Interest Rate Channel, Ismael Guzman-Diaz

2019 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

In this paper we investigate the interaction between interest rates and the prevalence of so called ‘Zombie’ firms. Zombie firms are relatively unproductive, insolvent firms, who nevertheless remain in the market. The past several decades have witnessed a steady rise in the prevalence of these firms across advanced economies. Significant evidence now exists of their detrimental effects on healthy firms within their industries and on the economy as a whole through allocative inefficiencies and drags on productivity growth. Notably, this zombie phenomenon coincides with the long-term lowering trend in benchmark interest rates, providing a theoretical life-support mechanism through which zombie …

Sexual Assault By Federal Actors, #Metoo, And Civil Rights, Julie Goldscheid Dec 2019

Sexual Assault By Federal Actors, #Metoo, And Civil Rights, Julie Goldscheid

Washington Law Review

Calls for accountability for gender violence have permeated public discourse in the aftermath of the #MeToo movement. While much attention has focused on high profile individuals accused of harassment, less attention has been paid to sexual assaults of more vulnerable and marginalized people, including low wage workers, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender non-conforming people, and immigrants. In addition, at the same time that calls for accountability have targeted Hollywood, employers, universities, and even the Catholic church, relatively little outcry has focused on the longstanding and under-recognized problem of sexual assaults by government actors. This Article focuses on sexual assault …

Addiction-Informed Immigration Reform, Rebecca Sharpless Dec 2019

Addiction-Informed Immigration Reform, Rebecca Sharpless

Washington Law Review

Immigration law fails to align with the contemporary understanding of substance addiction as a medical condition. The Immigration and Nationality Act regards noncitizens who suffer from drug or alcohol substance use disorder as immoral and undesirable. Addiction is a ground of exclusion and deportation and can prevent the finding of “good moral character” needed for certain immigration applications. Substance use disorder can lead to criminal behavior that lands noncitizens, including lawful permanent residents, in removal proceedings with no defense. The time has come for immigration law to catch up to today’s understanding of addiction. The damage done by failing to …

Piecing Together Precedent: Fragmented Decisions From The Washington State Supreme Court, Rachael Clark Dec 2019

Piecing Together Precedent: Fragmented Decisions From The Washington State Supreme Court, Rachael Clark

Washington Law Review

For decades, countless jurisdictions have grappled with the ambiguous precedential weight of court decisions that lack a majority opinion. In American jurisprudence, applying a “majority,” “lead,” “concurrence,” or “dissent” label to an appellate court opinion indicates agreement or disagreement with the judgment of the case. When a decision is fragmented (that is, there is no majority opinion), courts often express the judgment of the court with one opinion labeled as the “plurality” or “lead” opinion. Traditionally, labeling an opinion as a “lead opinion” indicates that the reasoning expressed within the opinion has more support than the other opinions written for …

A Proposal To Improve Washington's Rules On Ex Parte Contact, Connor Rowinski Dec 2019

A Proposal To Improve Washington's Rules On Ex Parte Contact, Connor Rowinski

Washington Law Review

Privilege doctrines play an important role in allowing clients to confide in their trusted attorneys and doctors. The intersection of two privilege doctrines in medical malpractice litigation—physician-patient privilege and attorney-client privilege—places physicians working at corporate hospitals in a catch-22 of allegiances. On one hand, physicians cannot disclose patient information, whereas on the other, they must assist their employer in defending the case. These concerns are heightened when attorneys seek to communicate with non-party physicians ex parte—that is, unsupervised. In Youngs v. Peacehealth, the Washington State Supreme Court allowed corporate defendants to communicate ex parte with the plaintiff’s treating physician under …

Between You, Me, And Alexa: On The Legality Of Virtual Assistant Devices In Two-Party Consent States, Ria Kuruvilla

Washington Law Review

When an Amazon Echo is activated, the device is constantly recording and sending those recordings to Amazon’s cloud. For an always recording device such as the Echo, getting consent from every person subject to a recording proves difficult. An Echo-owner consents to the recordings when they purchase and register the device, but when does a guest in an Echo-owner’s home consent to being recorded? This Comment uses Amazon’s Echo and Washington’s privacy statute to illustrate the tension between speech-activated devices and two-party consent laws—which require that all parties subject to a recording consent to being recorded. This Comment argues that …

Cinematographic Landscapes Of Blackness In Mexico: (Re)Framing Afro-Mexican Lives & Futures, Talia Weltman-Cisneros Dec 2019

Cinematographic Landscapes Of Blackness In Mexico: (Re)Framing Afro-Mexican Lives & Futures, Talia Weltman-Cisneros

PALARA: Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association

The legacy of historical invisibility and socio-cultural marginalization and rejection have marred contemporary Afro-Mexican lives, silencing their stories, customs, traditions, and cosmologies, while also denying them a sense of belonging and place within the visions of the present and futures of Mexican landscapes. Mexican films have often echoed this estranged relationship between blackness and Mexicanidad, portraying black characters as stereotyped figures who have most often been marked as exotic, primitive, and alien or anachronic in Mexico. However, these subaltern imaginaries of blackness and of Afro-Mexicanidad are challenged in the recent films La negrada (2018) and Artemio (2017). This article …

Black Agency And Aesthetic Innovation In Sergio Giral's El Otro Francisco, Philip Kaisary Dec 2019

Black Agency And Aesthetic Innovation In Sergio Giral's El Otro Francisco, Philip Kaisary

PALARA: Publication of the Afro-Latin/American Research Association

In 2013, Henry Louis Gates lamented the tradition of whitewashing and the passing over of slave stories which has become commonplace throughout cinematic history: “there have been all too few films that have captured, or even attempted to convey, the truth of the experience of slavery, from the slave’s point of view” and even fewer “worthy of recognition.” While it is true that there have been some high-profile films produced in the last decade – 12 Years a Slave, Django Unchained, and Birth of a Nation, among others – that have endeavored to represent slavery from the …
