Implementing Screening To Assess Readiness To Change In Overweight And Obese Patients At A Patient-Centered Medical Home, Jarrod Edward Gant
Implementing Screening To Assess Readiness To Change In Overweight And Obese Patients At A Patient-Centered Medical Home, Jarrod Edward Gant
Dissertations
Obesity is at epidemic levels within the United States (U.S.), but the Southern U.S. has some of the most obese states. Mississippi (MS) is the most obese state in the country (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2018). Factors such as diet, sedentary lifestyle, cultural influences, and socioeconomic status contribute to the state's citizens being overweight and obese. Contributing to the state's obesity is the fact that MS has more people living in poverty than any other state (Center for American Progress [CAP], 2018). Lacking the ability to afford healthy foods and the ability to afford quality healthcare adds to the state's …

Developing A Scale To Measure Responses Of Clients With Actual Or Potential Myocardial Infarctions, Karen Rae Robinson
Developing A Scale To Measure Responses Of Clients With Actual Or Potential Myocardial Infarctions, Karen Rae Robinson
Dissertations
An assumption in Modeling and Role-Modeling theory is that meeting instinctive needs promotes growth and development across the life span (Erickson, Tomlin, & Swain, 1988). The need for object attachments is one type of need. Loss of an attachment results in the grief process with denial and shock as the first stage. For the coronary client, an acute episode of chest pain may threaten the loss of an attachment object (one's heart function). Determining a coronary client's level of denial is important data and is needed before the nurse can develop individualized interventions to facilitate the client's adaptation. The purpose …

A Fuzzy‐Based Risk Assessment Framework For Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Under‐Ice Missions, Ty Loh, Mp Brito, N Bose, J Xu, K Tenekedjiev
Plymouth Business School
The use of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for various scientific, commercial, and military applications has become more common with maturing technology and improved accessibility. One relatively new development lies in the use of AUVs for under-ice marine science research in the Antarctic. The extreme environment, ice cover, and inaccessibility as compared to open-water missions can result in a higher risk of loss. Therefore, having an effective assessment of risks before undertaking any Antarctic under-ice missions is crucial to ensure an AUV's survival. Existing risk assessment approaches predominantly focused on the use of historical fault log data of an AUV and …

Vertical, Thermal, And Geographic Habitats Of Whale Sharks (Rhincodon Typus) Tagged Along Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, Rachel Steinberg
Theses
Though whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are the largest fish in the ocean there is little known about the species’ life history. Juvenile males are often observed at a number of locations world-wide but adult females, adult males, and neonates are rarely seen. Consequently, important issues like where whale sharks mate and give birth are unknown. Similarly, what geographic and vertical habitats whale sharks use to forage in are similarly poorly known. Seventeen juvenile whale sharks (10 female, 7 male) were outfitted with satellite tags off Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia between 2003 and 2009, and subsequently monitored for 1920 …

Reconsidering Nondemocratic Political Regimes, Richard Arneson
Reconsidering Nondemocratic Political Regimes, Richard Arneson
San Diego Law Review
Asking what the best feasible political governance system for a country at a time is admits of different interpretations, depending on the gloss we are placing on “feasible.” We might be thinking of the best feasible system as the best system that could be installed, in present circumstances, if a set of people sufficient to bring about the shift could be convinced to team up to effect it. A more restricted feasibility question would be posed if we asked instead, taking for granted the actual beliefs and attitudes and their entrenchment in the present members of society now, what is …

In 2014, the State Council of the Chinese Communist Party announced the institution of a social credit system by 2020, a follow-up to a similar statement on the creation of a social credit system issued by the State Council in 2007. Social credit ratings of the type being developed by the State Council in partnership with Chinese companies go beyond existing financial credit ratings in an attempt to project less-tangible personal characteristics like trustworthiness, criminal tendencies, and group loyalty onto a single scale. The emergence of personal credit ratings is enabled by Big Data, automated decision-making processes, machine learning, and …

In this study, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of VERU-111 in vitro and in vivo model systems of cervical cancer. VERU-111 treatment inhibited cell proliferation and, clonogenic potential, induce accumulation of p53 and down regulated the expression of HPV E6/E7 expression in cervical cancer cells. In addition, VERU-111 treatment also decreased the expression of phosphorylation of Jak2 (TyR1007/1008) and STAT3 at Tyr705 and Ser727. VERU-111 treatment arrested cell cycle in the G2/M phase and modulated cell cycle regulatory proteins (cyclin B1, p21 p34cdc2 and pcdk1). Moreover, VERU-111 treatment induced apoptosis and modulated the expression of Bid, Bcl-xl, Survivin, Bax, Bcl2 …

Intelligent Transport System (ITS) applications rely on efficient forwarding or routing ofthe packet. However, routing or forwarding packet in Connected Vehicles is a challenging task and data retrieval rate can be very low due to highly dynamic topology andintermittent connectivity. Most of the routing solutions in the literature are location-based accompanied with limited flooding when location information is not available. For efficient communication and data retrieval in the vehicular network, we propose a hybrid forwarding solution, called CCLF. CCLF takes into account content-based connectivity information, i.e., Interest satisfaction ratio for each name prefix, in its forwarding decisions. To overcome the …

Porosity causes cracks and many other defects in materials. The understanding of how pores affect the kinetics and material solidification remains largely lacking. Phase field crystal (PFC) modeling is a continuum approach that has been used to study phase behaviors and kinetics of many processes over wide ranges of length scales and over diffusive timescales. This thesis focuses on the development of a PFC model for materials with circular pores. From the model’s free energy functional, a Langevin equation for the density field is derived and integrated numerically over a wide range of system parameters. We found that the pore's …

Improvements To Psync: Distributed Full Dataset Synchronization In Named-Data Networking, Ashlesh Gawande
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
TCP/IP is ill-suited for modern many-to-many and distributed applications such as content distribution and IoT. Named-Data Networking (NDN) is a future Internet architecture design based on the primitive of publishing and fetching authenticated named data objects/chunks. NDN’s name-based retrieval, stateful forwarding, data-centric security, and in-network caching overcome many shortcomings of today's TCP/IP networks due to their host-centric data delivery and channel-based security models. Applications in NDN, such as chat, require distributed synchronization of all published data. This thesis evaluates PSync, a distributed dataset synchronization protocol for NDN, and proposes a set of improvements to PSync. ChronoSync is an existing synchronization …

Limitations with existing methods and materials used for nerve repair shows the significant interest to keep researching new materials for nerve implants. Recent studies show the importance of material properties to cell behavior. This body of work focuses on understanding the effect of material properties on the behavior of PC12 neurons. The first part of the work attemepts to quantify the relationships between cell parameters and substrate properties. Based on this study, random topographies with surface roughness of 0.5 µm and Young’s modulus of 2MPa are the optimum substrates for neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells. The second part investigates the …

This thesis intends to show how the field of British midwifery changed through the rise of male-midwives during the eighteenth-century in London. Midwifery, which had previously been a women-only profession in that era, came to be dominated by male-midwives who argued that men should be in charge of this field due to the inherent "weakness" of women and therefore the supposed inadequate training of midwives. In this thesis, I will argue that male-midwives succeeding in asserting their dominance through the development of tools such as the forceps, through the establishment of courses about midwifery, and through the publication of treatises …

A duality exists within the experience of architecture. For many years, architects have privileged the intellectual or conceptual dimensions of design over the haptic experience of architecture, compounding a split between mind and body within our highly technologized society. We need an architecture that brings us back to the present moment. By uniting haptic experience with intellectual understanding of place, an Architecture of Presence can create a complete human experience. Explored through the design of an ecological research field laboratory in Shelby Forest, thoughtful crafting of spatial experience using material and light, modulated by contrast, leads to increased awareness and …

Bone mineral density (BMD) in the pectoral flipper of the common bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, was examined to address the need to define a comprehensive target site for clinical osteodensitometric assessment and to establish ranges of observed bone density values for this species. Radii were analyzed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the accepted standard in human medical studies. Multiple loci within the radius were identified and assessed for their correlation to BMD of the entire bone. Radii BMD were also examined for differences based on sex, age, total body length, handedness, geographical affinity, and nutritional status at time …

Optimizing On-Street Parking Supply With Analytical Models, Chawalit Tipagornwong
Dissertations and Theses
Commercial vehicles are crucial for the urban economy, but they generate negative impacts as well. This leads to restrictions such as a reduction in the number of loading zones. The result is that commercial drivers spend a significant amount of time searching for available loading zones. To avoid searching for parking, some commercial drivers double park, which causes traffic congestion. Therefore, the number of loading zones should be set properly. Since a curb is allocated between both loading zones and parking spaces, both parking types have to be considered. Many on-street parking management strategies have been implemented, including pricing meter …
Evaluating Preventative Care And Post-Hospitalization Primary Care Follow-Up In Adults With Intellectual And/Or Developmental Disabilities, Jason Xenakis
