Ephemeroptera (Insecta) In Cuba, Carlos Naranjo L., Janice G. Peters, Pedro López Del Castillo

Insecta Mundi

Systematic, faunistic and ecological aspects of the six families and 34 species and subspecies in the order Ephemeroptera currently recorded from Cuba are reviewed based primarily on a reference collection located at the Universidad de Oriente (Santiago de Cuba), collections at the Institute of Ecology and Systematics (Havana) and historic literature. A key to nymphs is included with photographs of significant features of many species. An annotated list of species is presented with comments on type localities, species ecology and distribution. The morpho- ecological types of the nymphs are updated according to current taxonomic changes, and indicator species of organic …

Insecta Mundi

The host plant and life history observations of Plesioclytus morrisi Wappes and Skelley and Plesioclytus relictus Giesbert (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Plesioclytini) are described for the first time. The host for both species is shown to be Polygonum polygamum Vent. (Polygonaceae). Observations also indicate that plants chosen for oviposition occur in open sand areas of scrub habitat.

Lepidoptera Pests Of Sapodilla (Manilkara Zapota (L.) Van Royen) In South Florida, With Some Comments On Life History And Natural Control, Jose I. Martinez, Jonathan H. Crane, Jeff Wasielewski, Jacqueline Y. Miller, Daniel Carrillo

Insecta Mundi

Sapodilla (Manilkara zapota (L.) van Royen) is originally from the Neotropics, and has become one of the most important tropical crops in the last few decades. The major producers include India, Mexico, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Venezuela and Guatemala. It is also a minor crop in the United States, specifically South Florida. In 2015, it was reported that Florida growers suffered a loss of up to 80% of their production due to lepidopteran pests. We surveyed two sapodilla orchards weekly in South Florida for about six months. We collected 1,070 lepidopteran individuals (i.e., larvae, pupae and adults) belonging to seven …

Aesthetics Of Things, Aseel Dammas

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Life in all its details is full of aesthetic. There might be beauty in those small things, which we do not pay attention to - if we stood there and analyzed for a moment we would be able to touch the meanings and aesthetic aspects of things. Therefore, I chose the (Aesthetic of things) as the general theme of my work, because I believe it's important way to achieving a stage of peace and tranquility internally and externally.

Analysis Of Shock Wave Unsteadiness Using Space And Time Correlations Applied To Shadowgraph Flow Visualization Data, Shannon Marko, Phillip M. Ligrani Dec 2019

Analysis Of Shock Wave Unsteadiness Using Space And Time Correlations Applied To Shadowgraph Flow Visualization Data, Shannon Marko, Phillip M. Ligrani

PRC-Affiliated Research

Unsteady flow characteristics of a normal shock wave, a lambda foot, and a separated turbulent boundary layer are investigated within a unique test section with supersonic inlet flow. The supersonic wind tunnel facility, containing this test section, provides a Mach number of approximately 1.54 at the test section entrance. Digitized shadowgraph flow visualization data are employed to visualize shock wave structure within the test section. These data are analyzed to determine shock wave unsteadiness characteristics, including grayscale spectral energy variations with frequency, as well as time and space correlations, which give coherence and time lag properties associated with perturbations associated …

Simulation Of Skull Fracture Due To Falls, Anthony Vicini, Tarun Goswami Dec 2019

Simulation Of Skull Fracture Due To Falls, Anthony Vicini, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

This study presents novel predictive equations for von Mises stress values of bones in the frontal and lateral regions of the skull. The equations were developed based on results of a finite element model developed during this research. The model was validated for frontal and lateral loading conditions with input values mimetic to fall scenarios. Using neural network processing of the information derived from the model achieved R2 values of 0.9990 for both the stress and deflection. Based on the outcome of the fall victims, a threshold von Mises stress of 40.9 to 46.6 MPa was found to indicate skull …

The cross sections of nuclear reactions between the radioisotope Be7 and deuterium, a possible mechanism of reducing the production of mass-7 nuclides in big-bang nucleosynthesis, were measured at center-of-mass energies between 0.2 and 1.5 MeV. The measured cross sections are dominated by the (d,a) reaction channel, towards which prior experiments were mostly insensitive. A new resonance at 0.36(5) MeV with a strength of ωγ=1.7(5) keV was observed inside the relevant Gamow window. Calculations of nucleosynthesis outcomes based on the experimental cross section show that the resonance reduces the predicted abundance of primordial Li7, but not sufficiently to solve the primordial …
