Hemp: Connecting Kentucky’S Past With Its Future, Ryan Quarles Dec 2019

Hemp: Connecting Kentucky’S Past With Its Future, Ryan Quarles

Journal of Agricultural Hemp Research

The story of hemp is as much as a legal history as it is a story about cultivation. Hemp has been in the news frequently of late, especially since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, which included The Hemp Farming Act of 2018. As one can imagine, legal issues abound when discussing the laws and regulations governing cannabis cultivation and marketing in the United States. Now that hemp surpasses a new legal milestone, much work is left to be done to truly commercialize this historic crop to 21st century farming. Despite these many challenges that remain before …

Enhancing Rooting Of Vegetatively Propagated Cannabis Sativa ‘Baox’ Cuttings, Paul Cockson, Gabby Barajas, Brian Whipker Dec 2019

Enhancing Rooting Of Vegetatively Propagated Cannabis Sativa ‘Baox’ Cuttings, Paul Cockson, Gabby Barajas, Brian Whipker

Journal of Agricultural Hemp Research

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) has recently become legalized in the United States (U.S.). To grow hemp, often propagation occurs via asexual means through rooting vegetative tip cuttings. To produce plants, meristems are excised from stock plants and propagated to produce transplants for greenhouse or field-production. Successfully rooting vegetative cuttings can vary widely among growers due to greenhouse propagation environmental conditions, cultural inputs and practices, and vegetative cutting quality. To overcome rooting challenges, the impact of cutting stem caliper (diameter) and the use of root-zone heating (RZH) on rhizogenesis were investigated. Results indicated that large (2.9 – 3.2 mm) caliper …

Combination Of Pembrolizumab And Bcg Treatment After Endoscopic Ablation Of High-Risk Superficial Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma In Patients Not Candidates For Radical Nephroureterectomy: Protocol For Phase-Ii Study, Marcus L. Jamil, Mustafa Deebajah, Akshay Sood, Shaheen Alanee Dec 2019

Jamil, Mustafa Deebajah, Akshay Sood, Shaheen Alanee

Urology Articles

INTRODUCTION: The treatment standard for high-risk upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UUTUC) is radical nephroureterectomy. However, some patients may be unfit or unwilling, and in such patients the available alternatives are suboptimal. Therapies targeting the programmed death (PD) pathway have shown promise in urothelial carcinom (UC). We designed the current study to determine the safety and efficacy of administering MK-3475 (a monoclonal antibody targeting interaction between PD-1 and its ligand) in combination with bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) in high-risk non-muscle invasive UUTUC patients.

METHODS: This represents a single-centre phase-II efficacy study of MK-3475 therapy in combination with BCG for subjects, 18 …

Despite the use of Hymenolepis diminuta as a model organism in experimental parasitology, a full genome description has not yet been published. Here we present a hybrid de novo genome assembly based on complementary sequencing technologies and methods. The combination of Illumina pairedend, Illumina mate-pair and Oxford Nanopore Technology reads greatly improved the assembly of the H. diminuta genome. Our results indicate that the hybrid sequencing approach is the method of choice for obtaining high-quality data. The fnal genome assembly is 177Mbp with contig N50 size of 75kbp and a scafold N50 size of 2.3Mbp. We obtained one of the …

The Rise Of Nationalism In International Finance: The Perennial Lure Of Populism In International Financial Relations, Federico Lupo-Pasini Dec 2019

The Rise Of Nationalism In International Finance: The Perennial Lure Of Populism In International Financial Relations, Federico Lupo-Pasini

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

Populism and nationalism are key drivers of current international economic relations, affecting almost all aspects of foreign economic policy. After almost four decades of cooperation in international financial relations, recent events suggest that we are now potentially entering a new phase of progressive disengagement. This new era would be dominated by the explicit need to safeguard domestic interests, in which regulatory barriers to cross-border finance will be more pronounced and curtailing the expansion of global financial markets will no longer be considered a policy taboo. This Article presents a brief history of financial nationalism and discusses some of its more …

Sargassum Infauna Community Structure In The Florida Straits And Gulf Stream, Dayna S. Hunn Dec 2019

Sargassum Infauna Community Structure In The Florida Straits And Gulf Stream, Dayna S. Hunn

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Community structure of Sargassum-associated organisms was examined from 11 sampling locations in the Florida Straits and Gulf Stream from May—September 2018 using a combination of modified shrimp trawls and dip nets. A total of 5413 organisms were collected from Sargassumhabitat representing 14 species from 10 families. A core group of organisms (Platynereis dumerilii, Litiopa melanostoma, Portunus sayi, Portunus spinimanus, Leander tenuicornis, and Latreutes fucorum) were found throughout the entirety of the geographic range surveyed. This core community was not found to vary significantly with increasing distance to shore (P=0.217) and latitude …

Faculty Research 2019

Human genetic studies implicate interleukin-27 (IL-27) in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D), but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. To further define the role of IL-27 in T1D, we generated non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice deficient in IL-27 or IL-27Rα. In contrast to wild-type NOD mice, both NOD.Il27-/- and NOD.Il27ra-/- strains are completely resistant to T1D. IL-27 from myeloid cells and IL-27 signaling in T cells are critical for T1D development. IL-27 directly alters the balance of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and T helper 1 (Th1) cells in pancreatic islets, which in turn modulates the diabetogenic activity …

Faculty Research 2019

Typically, estimating genetic parameters, such as disease heritability and between-disease genetic correlations, demands large datasets containing all relevant phenotypic measures and detailed knowledge of family relationships or, alternatively, genotypic and phenotypic data for numerous unrelated individuals. Here, we suggest an alternative, efficient estimation approach through the construction of two disease metrics from large health datasets: temporal disease prevalence curves and low-dimensional disease embeddings. We present eleven thousand heritability estimates corresponding to five study types: twins, traditional family studies, health records-based family studies, single nucleotide polymorphisms, and polygenic risk scores. We also compute over six hundred thousand estimates of genetic, environmental …
