Seeing In Color: How Are Teachers Perceiving Our Diverse Autistic Students?, Merida Lang Dec 2019

Seeing In Color: How Are Teachers Perceiving Our Diverse Autistic Students?, Merida Lang

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

Although the discipline gap between Black and White students is well documented and the discipline gap between students with disabilities and those without has also been researched, the discipline gap between autistic students of color and White students has received very little attention. This essay asks educators to consider the ways in which autistic students of color exist in a specific cross section of double-discrimination and considers what can be done to reduce unconscious bias, including developing a broader and more diverse understanding of autistic culture.

Truffaut’S L’Enfant Sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970): Evoking Autism And The Nascent “Eugenic Atlantic”, Joy C. Schaefer

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

This essay analyzes François Truffaut’s L’Enfant sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970) as an early representation of autism that metaphorizes the neurodiverse child as the colonial subject. The film takes place in 1798, only a decade after the French Revolution, and depicts the true events of the “wild boy of Aveyron,” a feral child found in the Southern French forest when he was twelve years old. Before the film’s production, Truffaut—who also plays the boy’s teacher, Dr. Jean-Marc Itard—collected articles and books on autism and viewed videos of autistic children to create his main character’s behavioral patterns. The film …

Process Of Using Small Unmanned Aerial Systems Using Photogrammetry For Preservation, Daniel Lee Dec 2019

Process Of Using Small Unmanned Aerial Systems Using Photogrammetry For Preservation, Daniel Lee

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

When conducting photogrammetry using aircraft, there are limits as to where it can go and what it can do. After visiting the Republic of Kosovo and working with a Cultural Heritage without Borders, the process in which one should collect images and scans for preservation purposes was brought clear. Using small unmanned aerial systems proved to be a much better alternative when compared with traditional aircraft. Using multiple UAS over a variety of different terrains, it was discovered that UAS were a much more feasible option. The purpose of this research is to help cultural heritage organizations collect images for …

Career Competencies: More Than Students, More Than Athletes, Melanie Canfield, Sydney Jones, Christian Pierre, Olivia Roa

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The ability for student-athletes to translate athletic experiences into career competencies is valuable, but student-athletes may not know how to leverage the career competencies they have gained through sports participation. In addition, student-athlete’s time demands may limit access to career support services. This project summarizes the perceived career competencies of student-athletes at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). Embry-Riddle student-athletes compete in the Sunshine State Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division II. Findings from one-on-one interviews with 16 current or past ERAU student-athletes led to the creation of an infographic, containing five word clouds. Among ERAU student-athletes, the word …

Chemical Abundances For Sirius Using Erau's Supercomputer Vega, Allison Acosta, Jason P. Aufdenberg, Peter H. Hauschildt Dec 2019

Chemical Abundances For Sirius Using Erau's Supercomputer Vega, Allison Acosta, Jason P. Aufdenberg, Peter H. Hauschildt

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Elemental abundances in the atmosphere of Sirius A reveal a history of nucleosynthesis. Sirius A, the brightest star in the night sky, has tightly constrained fundamental parameters due to its orbit with Sirius B, a measured interferometric diameter, and a precise parallax. Its slow rotation and apparent lack of atmospheric convection suggest one-dimensional model atmospheres should be a good approximation. Recent abundance analyses of Sirius A from Landstreet (2011) and Cowley et al. (2016) have employed local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) models in comparison to high-resolution spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS), the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS), …

Investigating The Correlation Between Gnss Signal Scintillation And Thunderstorms, Marissa Priore, Julian Herrera Tenorio, Danayit Mekonnen, Chintan Thakrar

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have wide application in multiple sectors from daily life to industrial use. These sectors include navigation, timing, and positioning which all require a constant stream of accurate data. One aspect of maintaining the accuracy involves a deep understanding of the ionosphere and how it affects radio signals. This project takes into account an element that might impact the ionosphere: thunderstorms and their high-altitude lightning. Structures created in the ionosphere can cause scintillations, but finding if thunderstorms could initiate these structures is the main goal. Scintillation refers to fluctuations in the phase and amplitude of GNSS …

The Effectiveness Of Augmented Reality For Astronauts On Lunar Missions, Godfrey V. D'Souza Dec 2019

The Effectiveness Of Augmented Reality For Astronauts On Lunar Missions, Godfrey V. D'Souza

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The uses of Augmented Reality (AR) and Head-Up Displays (HUDs) are becoming more prominent in industries such as aviation, automotive and medicine. An AR device such as the Microsoft Hololens can project holograms onto the user’s natural field of view to assist with completion of a variety of tasks. Unfortunately, only a little research and development has begun in the space sector for astronauts using these HUDs. Future lunar missions could incorporate AR for astronauts to ease task load and improve accuracy. The study evaluated the usability, subjective workload, and task performance of 22 participants using the Microsoft HoloLens to …

Project Thetis, Grace Robertson Dec 2019

Project Thetis, Grace Robertson

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Project Thetis is a 35-member team comprised of 4 sub-teams including design, software, electrical and logistics. Our project aims to reduce the commonality of micro-plastics by extracting them from anhydrous sand samples. Micro-plastics are the most common form of pollutant in marine systems, but in the last year have been reported in every tested ecosystem including mountain ranges around the globe, freshwater systems, and the atmosphere. We have chosen to focus on micro-plastic extraction from anhydrous sand as it is a neglected ecosystem in current efforts to remove micro-plastics from the environment. Extraction will be done using electric force attraction …

The Polar Cloud Satellite: The First Cubesat Mission To Study Noctilucent Clouds, Benjamin Banner, Ethan Deweese, Austin Gleydura, Christian Junio, Ryan Kressler, John Olafson, Michael Pope, Michael Weinhoffer, Timeo Williams

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Members of the Spaceflight Sciences, Policy, and Operations Club (SSPOC) are designing a 1U CubeSat, the Polar Cloud Satellite, that will host an ultraviolet instrument that will image noctilucent clouds. Noctilucent clouds, formally called polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs), are clouds made of ice particles and water vapor that form in the polar regions of the Earth at altitudes ranging from 76 to 85 kilometers. The formation of PMCs at much lower latitudes than usual since their discovery in the 1980s can possibly be linked to increased carbon dioxide output by humans. NASA’s Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite …

Interdependency Of Port Clusters During Regional Disasters, Fanny Kristiansson, Hannah Thomas Dec 2019

Interdependency Of Port Clusters During Regional Disasters, Fanny Kristiansson, Hannah Thomas

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Ports play a vital role in the economy of nations and provide a critical link in the supply chain. Ports form the gateway by which essential goods are received within large geographic regions. Because of their function, ports are exposed to substantial risk of flooding, storm events, sea-level-rise, and climate change. The resiliency of ports is essential for the economy, the people, and national readiness. The contribution of this research work is in providing a methodology to quantify port resiliency that is applicable at the individual port level and regionally. The research approach first defines a quantifiable measure of systematic …

How Vulnerable Are Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (Suas) To Cyber Attack?, Derian Bautista Dec 2019

How Vulnerable Are Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (Suas) To Cyber Attack?, Derian Bautista

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The FAA predicts that there will be ~3.4M consumer drones and ~327K commercial sUAS (sUAS, or commonly known as drones) operating in the U.S. by 2020. Drones are increasingly used by law enforcement, emergency services, utility companies, large agricultural providers, and many other economic sectors. A drone’s components align closely with that of small computing devices, with the addition of aeronautical hardware. As such, they may be susceptible to the same forms of attacks that are increasingly common among computing devices.

To test this theory, we conducted a study to identify cyber-related vulnerabilities against a consumer model drone. We conducted …

Naomi Shihab Nye’S Sitti’S Secrets: Poetics Of Homeland, Lama Al-Mahadin

Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات

Sitti’s Secrets (SS) was published in 1994, one year after the Oslo Accords, which saw the Palestinians sign peace agreements with Israel. The Accords, which led to the creation of the Palestinian Authority, an interim entity to govern the West Bank and Gaza, “promised much, though in reality delivered very little that was tangible” (Hastedt & Lybeck, 2014,p. 71). But Nye was writing at a time when the Accords still exercised a hold on the global imagination with the promise of lasting peace in the region. This paper seeks to examine the story as an affective articulation of Nye’s vision …

The Aesthetics Of Jerusalem Butterflies And The Illusion Of Resistance, Hanan Ibrahim Dec 2019

The Aesthetics Of Jerusalem Butterflies And The Illusion Of Resistance, Hanan Ibrahim

Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات

In Sonata for Jerusalem Ghost (SJG) (2009), Waciny Laredj, the Algerian-French novelist, engages with one of the most, if not the most, pivotal cases that have dominated the Arab political and socio- cultural scene for more than seventy decades, namely: the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Laredj utilizes an interdisciplinary approach informed by postmodern, psychoanalytical, postcolonial, and ecological rhetoric to deal with issues pertaining to occupation, displacement, the nostalgia for the homeland, the problem of hybrid identity, and others. Elemental ecology operates as a discursive proxy that links up the different disciplines in SJG. Exploring the dynamics of this operation, I …
