Going Green: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design In Dubai, Maya Mcelwaine Dec 2019

Going Green: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design In Dubai, Maya Mcelwaine

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a 21st century approach to integrating various methods of crime-reducing physical and perceived security enhancement measures into a given environment. A taxonomy of CPTED measures was developed based on broader patterns identified by a guiding text in the field, 21st Century Security and CPTED (Atlas, 2008). This taxonomy was utilized as a rubric for field observations of CPTED instances in Dubai, U.A.E. Photographic record and 13 points of data were collected for each instance of CPTED over the course of 26 days, resulting in a matrix of over 700 data …

Design Of A Hardware-In-The-Loop (Hil) Simulation Of A Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Suav) For Self Autonomous Mission Capability, Gregory Enriquez Dec 2019

Design Of A Hardware-In-The-Loop (Hil) Simulation Of A Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (Suav) For Self Autonomous Mission Capability, Gregory Enriquez

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The purpose for this project is to design a HIL simulation architecture in validating a small quadcopter’s flight operation functionality with self-autonomous mission integration using a ground control station (GCS) software called Qgroundcontrol. HIL simulation is where the hardware’s functionality is simulated by various simulation modeling techniques. To design the HIL simulation architecture, the hardware of the airframe and the flight dynamic model (FDM) of the airframe must be determined. The airframe will be a QWinOut drone with a 4-axle quadcopter configuration, and the hardware will be the Pixhawk PX4 flight controller which will be analyzed through HIL simulations before …

Trihydroxybenzoic Acid Analogs As A Potential Drug Formulation For Inflammatory Diseases, Haleema Irfan, Foram Madiyar Dec 2019

Trihydroxybenzoic Acid Analogs As A Potential Drug Formulation For Inflammatory Diseases, Haleema Irfan, Foram Madiyar

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The project seeks to establish the link between toll-like receptors (TLR) in the pathogenesis of inflammation and formulate a trihydroxy benzoic acid (THBA) analog as a potential drug formulation for inflammatory diseases.

We aim to develop a stable drug-polymer complex of THBA using pH-sensitive polymers that will target inflammation. Various analogs of THBA will be synthesized with nano-co-precipitation experimentation for optimization using a variety of polymers, solvents, and stabilizers to increase the solubility in aqueous conditions and determine the most effective combination. The particle size, drug loading, and dissolution profile under various pH are discussed with various polymers. The formulated …

Photo-Double Ionization Of Water, Conner L. Penson, Giorgio Turri Dec 2019

Photo-Double Ionization Of Water, Conner L. Penson, Giorgio Turri

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The goal of this experiment was to measure coincident 2-electron emissions from water molecules with unequal energies to analyze the direct emission processes of H20. The ELETTRA Synchrotron was utilized for its highly tunable photon selection and its coincidence measurement capabilities. A photon flux of specific energy was fired into a thin stream of water vapor in near-perfect vacuum and electron detectors at known angles in the plane of emission were scanned through different energy and emission angles. The detectors only recorded a measurement if it was in coincidence with the measurement of another detector to ensure that …

The Rohingyan Genocide And The Anti-Nation, Hailee Clark Dec 2019

The Rohingyan Genocide And The Anti-Nation, Hailee Clark

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

This research project evaluates the Rohingyan genocide through the lens of Murray’s theory of the anti-nation. Murray (2015) states that the anti-nation is defined by five characteristics- homeland claims, religion, alliances, range of economic and social backgrounds, and historical animosity. This research shows that the case of the Rohingyan genocide supports Murray’s theory and proves it continues to fit in twenty-first century genocide. This research was conducted through an evaluation of articles and interviews detailing Burmese culture, victim accounts of the genocide, state laws, and extremist speeches delivered by Buddhist monks. Along with supporting Murray’s theory, this study will connect …

Product Development From Apple, Grapes And Berries Food Waste: Market Research, Industry Analysis And Opportunity Assessment, Sahil Ghate, Siddharth S. Kesharwani Ph.D, Foram Madiyar, Sonali R. Pandey Ph.D

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

This study focuses on the apples, berries, and grapes wastage produced by the population of North America and Europe. The research is aims to conduct in-depth comparison between these two regions based on volume and monetary value of fruit waste produced. The research was conducted by an inquiry based primary research with industry experts product development scientist and good waste management companies, and secondary research was conducted by collecting information from company’s websites, annual reports, white papers, and financial reports. This research open the reusability opportunity of fruit waste, optimize the food processing and manufacturing industry. The waste from apples, …

Project Valhalla, Ryan Kressler, Benjamin Chaback, Cristina Viana, Shashwat Acharya, Nick Butler, Michael Pope Iii

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Project VALHALLA (Vertical Air Lifted High Altitude Light Launch Apparatus) is a high altitude launch platform with the objective of providing a cost efficient option for collegiate rocket organizations to perform high altitude research.

This project primarily consists of a platform that will be lifted to 100,000 feet using several clusters of high altitude balloons that will be inflated using Helium. From 100,000 feet, the rocket will be launched and the platform will then descend to the ground by retrieving the helium and absorbing it back into storage tanks while pressurizing it.

Currently, the project is on phase two which …

Exploration Of Transportation In Nordic Countries: Observations Of Accessibility, Design, And Ease, Janel Ingraham Dec 2019

Exploration Of Transportation In Nordic Countries: Observations Of Accessibility, Design, And Ease, Janel Ingraham

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Exploration of Transportation in Nordic Countries: Observations of Accessibility, Design, and Ease

Commuter satisfaction is an under-represented topic in transportation research. The purpose of this paper is to highlight applications of user-oriented design in Nordic countries that are used to improve commuter usability, satisfaction and safety. The researcher wanted to answer questions relating to what urban planning designs provide ease for those commuting in this region and to those that need extra assistance; and what is implemented to ensure safety for commuters. To answer these questions, an observational methodology was used to obtain and code data from imagery and notes …

Establishing A Presumption Of Competence In The Ela Classroom: One Teacher’S Story Of Creating Space For Autistic Culture, Christopher Bass Dec 2019

Establishing A Presumption Of Competence In The Ela Classroom: One Teacher’S Story Of Creating Space For Autistic Culture, Christopher Bass

Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture

Much has been written about the exclusive nature of inclusive teaching (Allan 2015; Owen & Gabriel, 2010; Smith 2010; Ware, 2004). Many general educators approach neurodiversity with a deficit approach (Smagorinsky, Tobin and Lee, 2019; Myers, 2019) As an active ELA teacher, I argue that teachers must first establish a presumption of competence (Biklen, 2005), then model and promote asset-based rhetoric around ability. Once students engage with asset-based rhetoric, the classroom may become more inclusive of autistic culture. This article shares the story of my attempt to establish a presumption of competence through student tattoos.
