Therapeutic Strategies, Health Status And Quality Of Life Among Persons With Asthma: A Meta-Analysis, Catherine B. Bailey Dec 2019

Therapeutic Strategies, Health Status And Quality Of Life Among Persons With Asthma: A Meta-Analysis, Catherine B. Bailey

Dissertations

Asthma is a major health problem that affects approximately 17 million people in the United States. Unique circumstances associated with a patient's health status have made evaluations of the management of asthma difficult. The purposes of the study were to assemble information on therapeutic strategies, health status factors and Quality of Life among persons with asthma and make empirical generalizations about the selected variables from a universe of studies. This meta-analytical investigation consisted of fifteen subject studies that used experimental strategies and the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire on asthmatic subjects. Four research questions asked: (a) What are the substantive …

The Philosophy Of Michael Polanyi: From The Discoveries Of Science To The Contemplation Of God, Vincent M. Smiles Dec 2019

The Philosophy Of Michael Polanyi: From The Discoveries Of Science To The Contemplation Of God, Vincent M. Smiles

Forum Lectures

Human uniqueness revolves around our knowing. All knowing is "tacit" (Michael Polanyi) and leads to "indwelling" of mind in reality, as of reality in mind. This is why we always "know more than we can tell," which corresponds with another old adage, "the whole is more than the sum of the parts." This presentation will try to show that the vast spectrum of knowing is continuous, running from discoveries of the inanimate world, through biology and the humanities and arts, and even to "the face of God."

Exploring The Relationship Between Vocabulary Scaling And Algorithmic Performance In Text Classification For Large Datasets, Wilson Murray Fearn Dec 2019

Exploring The Relationship Between Vocabulary Scaling And Algorithmic Performance In Text Classification For Large Datasets, Wilson Murray Fearn

Theses and Dissertations

Text analysis is a significant branch of natural language processing, and includes manydifferent sub-fields such as topic modeling, document classification, and sentiment analysis.Unsurprisingly, those who do text analysis are concerned with the runtime of their algorithmsSome of these algorithms have runtimes that depend jointly on the size of the corpus beinganalyzed, as well as the size of that corpus's vocabulary. Trivially, a user may reduce theamount of data they feed into their model to speed it up, but we assume that users will behesitant to do this as more data tends to lead to better model quality. On the other …

Reply—And Gentle Dissent—To Michael Blake’S “Democracy And Deference”, Maimon Schwarzschild Dec 2019

Reply—And Gentle Dissent—To Michael Blake’S “Democracy And Deference”, Maimon Schwarzschild

San Diego Law Review

Michael Blake’s interesting and obviously heartfelt Article expresses the apprehension that many, if not most, of us feel that democratic life and institutions are under stress, even in danger of failing; and Blake wants to be fair, or at least to gesture at fairness, in accounting for the problems and in his prescriptions for what to do about it. Yet, his suggestions are deeply at odds, I believe, with any viable democratic future, and—a little sadly —they illustrate how wide the gap is now, or the gulf, between the political cultures or tribes within our very divided society. One thing …

Composition Effect On The Carrier Dynamics And Catalytic Performance Of Cuins2/Zns Quantum Dots For Light Driven Hydrogen Generation, Wenhui Hu, Sizhuo Yang, Jier Huang Dec 2019

Composition Effect On The Carrier Dynamics And Catalytic Performance Of Cuins2/Zns Quantum Dots For Light Driven Hydrogen Generation, Wenhui Hu, Sizhuo Yang, Jier Huang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Water soluble CuInS2/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) represent one of the most promising single component photocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, we report the effect of cation composition in CuInS2/ZnS QDs on the carrier relaxation and charge separation dynamics as well as their photocatalytic performance for the HER. With decreasing Cu to In ratio (increasing Cu deficiency), we observed slightly faster electron trapping and carrier recombination but significantly improved photocatalytic activity for the HER. This can be attributed to the enhanced electron transfer (ET) from the sacrificial donor to CuInS2/ZnS QDs …

Determination Of Global Mean Eddy Diffusive Transport In The Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere From Atomic Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide Climatologies, G. R. Swenson, C. C. J. H. Salinas, F. Vargas, Y. Zhu, M. Kaufmann, M. Jones Jr., A. Liu, Et Al. Dec 2019

Determination Of Global Mean Eddy Diffusive Transport In The Mesosphere And Lower Thermosphere From Atomic Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide Climatologies, G. R. Swenson, C. C. J. H. Salinas, F. Vargas, Y. Zhu, M. Kaufmann, M. Jones Jr., A. Liu, Et Al.

Publications

Quantifying the eddy diffusion coefficient profile in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) is critical to the constituent density distributions in the upper mesosphere and thermosphere. Previous work by Swenson et al. (2018, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jastp.2018.05.014) estimated the global mean eddy diffusion (kzz) values in the upper mesosphere using atomic oxygen (O), derived from Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) hydroxyl (OH). In this study, vertical eddy diffusive transport velocities of O were determined from continuity of mass in the mesopause region (80–97 km), primarily via the HOx chemistry. Global average constituent climatology from previously deduced SABER ozone (O3) …

An Exploration Of Neural Networks In Enhanced Resolution Remote Sensing Products, Jordan Paul Brown Dec 2019

An Exploration Of Neural Networks In Enhanced Resolution Remote Sensing Products, Jordan Paul Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Scatterometry and radiometry are used to obtain measurements of Earth properties with extensive spatial coverage at daily or near-daily temporal resolution. Their measurements are used in many climate studies and weather applications, such as iceberg tracking, ocean wind estimation, and volumetric soil moisture measurements. The spatial resolution of these data products ranges from a few kilometers to tens of kilometers. Techniques to enhance the spatial resolution of these products help reveal finer scale features, but come at the cost of increased noise. This thesis explores the application of neural networks as a possible method to handle the noise and uncertainty …

Understanding the regulation of development can help elucidate the pathogenesis behind many developmental defects found in humans and other vertebrates. Evidence has shown that alternative splicing of messenger RNA (mRNA) plays a role in developmental regulation, but our knowledge of the underlying mechanisms that regulate alternative splicing are incomplete. Notably, a subset of small noncoding RNAs known as scaRNAs (small cajal body associated RNAs) contribute to spliceosome maturation and function through guiding covalent modification of spliceosomal RNAs with either methylation or pseudouridylation on specific nucleotides, but the developmental significance of these modifications is not well understood. Our focus is on …

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) has been directly detecting gravitational waves from compact binary mergers since 2015. We report on the first use of squeezed vacuum states in the direct measurement of gravitational waves with the Advanced LIGO H1 and L1 detectors. This achievement is the culmination of decades of research to implement squeezed states in gravitational-wave detectors. During the ongoing O3 observation run, squeezed states are improving the sensitivity of the LIGO interferometers to signals above 50 Hz by up to 3 dB, thereby increasing the expected detection rate by 40% (H1) and 50% (L1).

Resonance Study Of Su(2) Model With 2 Fundamental Flavours Of Fermions., T Janowski, V Drach, S Prelovsek

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Composite Higgs models are promising candidate models to address the long-standing naturalness problem in the Standard Model. Among them, the most minimal one is the SU(2) with 2 flavours of fermions in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. An important prediction in these models is the existence of resonance spectrum in vector boson scattering. Here we study the lowest such resonance, which is the equivalent of rho resonance in QCD. We describe the scan of the parameter space using the clover-improved Wilson fermions with Symanzik improved gauge action and then show the first results for the mass and width …

Numerical Simulations Of The Hall–Petch Relationship In Aluminium Using Gradient-Enhanced Plasticity Model, Yooseob Song, Jaeheum Yeon, Byoungjoon Na Dec 2019

Numerical Simulations Of The Hall–Petch Relationship In Aluminium Using Gradient-Enhanced Plasticity Model, Yooseob Song, Jaeheum Yeon, Byoungjoon Na

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

+e Hall-Petch relation in aluminium is discussed based on the strain gradient plasticity framework. +e thermodynamically consistent gradient-enhanced flow rules for bulk and grain boundaries are developed using the concepts of thermal activation energy and dislocation interaction mechanisms. It is assumed that the thermodynamic microstresses for bulk and grain boundaries have dissipative and energetic contributions, and in turn, both dissipative and energetic material length scale parameters are existent. Accordingly, two-dimensional finite element simulations are performed to analyse characteristics of the Hall–Petch strengthening and the Hall–Petch constants. +e proposed flow rules for the grain boundary are validated using the existing experimental …

Exploring The Development Of A Hybrid And Synthetic Meaning Of Citizenship At A British University Law School, P Von Berg Dec 2019

Exploring The Development Of A Hybrid And Synthetic Meaning Of Citizenship At A British University Law School, P Von Berg

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This study uncovers a previously underappreciated role of the social experience of university in shaping undergraduates’ civic identities. A multidisciplinary theoretical approach to citizenship is used to understand an individual’s attempts to negotiate meaning along with a qualitative methodology that allowed students a voice in the data collection and analysis. The findings show that some of the most formative experiences in a student’s civic identity is their interaction with peers and friends in a diverse student community. There is also a strong influence of a culture of performativity and credentialism on students’ attitudes to learning about citizenship. Both combine in …
