Happy Feet In A Rural Clinic: A Diabetic Foot Education Intervention, Carmencita S. Abood Dec 2019

Happy Feet In A Rural Clinic: A Diabetic Foot Education Intervention, Carmencita S. Abood

Dissertations

Rural Healthy People 2010 report indicated that diabetes was more pervasive in non-metropolitan areas than in central cities and more commonplace in the Southeast and the Southwest regions of the United States due to complex set of factors such as low socioeconomic status among many rural residents, a high proportion of racial or ethnic minorities, and aging populations that were predominant in rural areas. The need for innovative, low literacy education material that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in a rural clinic is imperative. The purpose of the capstone project was to determine the effectiveness of a patient-centered diabetes …

Stop Talking About Sorrow: Nixon’S Communications Strategy After Lam Son 719, Dominic K. So

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

March 1971 was tough for President Richard Nixon. The American people were tired of the Vietnam War, with many still recovering from the violent anti-war protests of 1970. Congress had just passed an amendment prohibiting U.S. ground troops from operating outside of the borders of South Vietnam. Both the public and secret negotiations with Hanoi were stalled. Confidential channels with Beijing and Moscow about diplomatic initiatives had gone cold. Moreover, Lam Son 719, the joint U.S. and South Vietnamese incursion into Laos that began in February, was turning out to be a failure. The operation, Nixon’s military gamble to prove …

What, If Anything, Is Wrong With Gerrymandering?, Niko Kolodny Dec 2019

What, If Anything, Is Wrong With Gerrymandering?, Niko Kolodny

San Diego Law Review

…While some of the concern about gerrymandering is concern about the results that it leads to, some of the concern is that it is itself somehow objectionable—that it is undemocratic or unfair or foul play or what have you. If there is such an objection to incumbent protection gerrymandering, my best guess is that it violates conditions of proper representation or that it is corrupt. If there is such an objection to racial gerrymandering, my best guess is that it is wrongfully discriminatory. And if there is such an objection to partisan gerrymandering, my best guess is that it exploits …

Design And Construction Of A Pilot Scale Mbbr For Tertiary Nitrification, Jeffrey Crandall, Dylan Ellis, Brayden Llewellyn

Biological Engineering

Harmful algal blooms are a growing concern in the US, they are caused by nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) accumulation in bodies of water. As a result, stricter effluent restrictions are being placed on nutrient point sources, including wastewater treatment plants. Tertiary nitrification is a solution to meet these new restrictions.

The Efficacy Of Comedy, Mark Anthony Castricone Dec 2019

The Efficacy Of Comedy, Mark Anthony Castricone

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Efficacy of Comedy: Focusing on the efficacy of comedy as a genre, utilizing Aristotle, Nietzsche, and Heidegger’s philosophy. It begins with a historical analysis of the efficacy of comedy in Ancient 4th and 5th century Athens focusing on Aristotle’s conceptions of comedy. It analyses what Aristotle wrote about comedy and attempts a reconstruction of what his book on comedy from the poetics may have said. It then examines the shift to aesthetics rather than the Philosophy of Art with a focus on Kant and the Critique of Judgment. Comedy here is used as an interpretive tool in order to …

Peninsula Medical School

Abstract Huntington’s disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by an expanded polyglutamine (polyQ) tract in the huntingtin (HTT) protein. Mutant HTT (mHTT) toxicity is caused by its aggregation/oligomerisation. The striatum is the most vulnerable region, although all brain regions undergo neuronal degeneration in the disease. Here we show that the levels of Bim, a BH3-only protein, are significantly increased in HD human post-mortem and HD mouse striata, correlating with neuronal death. Bim reduction ameliorates mHTT neurotoxicity in HD cells. In the HD mouse model, heterozygous Bim knockout significantly mitigates mHTT accumulation and neuronal death, ameliorating disease-associated phenotypes and lifespan. …

Computing General Observables In Lattice Models With Complex Actions, O Francesconi, M Holzmann, B Lucini, A Rago, J Rantaharju Dec 2019

Computing General Observables In Lattice Models With Complex Actions, O Francesconi, M Holzmann, B Lucini, A Rago, J Rantaharju

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The study of QFTs at finite density is hindered by the presence of the so-called sign problem. The action definition of such systems is, in fact, complex-valued making standard importance sampling Monte Carlo methods ineffective. In this work, we shall review the generalized density of states method for complex action systems and the Linear Logarithmic Relaxation algorithm (LLR). We will focus on the recent developments regarding the bias control of the LLR method and the evaluation of general observables in the DoS+LLR framework. Recent results on the well-known relativistic Bose gas will be presented, proving that in our approach the …

Evaluation Of An Elk Detection Probability Model In The Black Hills, South Dakota, Evan C. Phillips, Chadwick P. Lehman, Robert W. Klaver, Angela R. Jarding, Susan P. Rupp, Jonathan A. Jenks, Christopher N. Jacques Dec 2019

Evaluation Of An Elk Detection Probability Model In The Black Hills, South Dakota, Evan C. Phillips, Chadwick P. Lehman, Robert W. Klaver, Angela R. Jarding, Susan P. Rupp, Jonathan A. Jenks, Christopher N. Jacques

Western North American Naturalist

Since 1993, elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni) abundance in the Black Hills of South Dakota has been estimated using a detection probability model previously developed in Idaho, though it is likely biased because of a failure to account for visibility biases under local conditions. To correct for this bias, we evaluated the current detection probability across the Black Hills during January and February 2009–2011 using radio-collared elk. We used logistic regression to evaluate topographic features, habitat characteristics, and group characteristics relative to their influence on detection probability of elk. Elk detection probability increased with less vegetation cover (%), increased …
