Understanding Stem Faculty Members' Decisions About Evidence-Based Instructional Practices, Rebecca Louise Sansom Dec 2019

Understanding Stem Faculty Members' Decisions About Evidence-Based Instructional Practices, Rebecca Louise Sansom

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional teaching practices in undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses have failed to support student success, causing many students to leave STEM fields and disproportionately affecting women and students of color. Although much is known about effective STEM teaching practices, many faculty continue to adhere to traditional methods, such as lecture. In this study, we investigated the factors that affect STEM faculty members' instructional decisions about evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs). We performed a qualitative analysis of semistructured interviews with faculty members from the Colleges of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Engineering who took part in the …

Reading Instruction For Students With Intellectual Disabilities:Inservice Teachers' Perceptions, Agatha Lee Gibbons Dec 2019

Reading Instruction For Students With Intellectual Disabilities:Inservice Teachers' Perceptions, Agatha Lee Gibbons

Theses and Dissertations

Students with intellectual disabilities have at times been overlooked and denied effective reading instruction. Teachers tasked with instructing such students are often limited in the training, resources, and support necessary to effectively instruct these students in reading. These problems are further compounded by the fact that students with intellectual disabilities have historically been misperceived, often by the very educators tasked with instructing them, as either being unable to learn to read or that the prospect of teaching them to read is simply too daunting and complicated to be of sufficient worth (Aldridge, 2014; Kluth & Chandler-Olcott, 2008). Such misperception may …

The Terms, Logan Bicknell, Namhee Kim

Theses

Society as a whole isn’t aware of how their personal data on social media is being used and collected after clicking agree to the Terms and Conditions.

Although many Americans claim they care about protecting their personal and private information, many readily agree to the terms and conditions without realizing the implications of such actions. "A Deloitte survey of 2,000 consumers in the U.S found that 91% of people consent to legal terms and services conditions without reading them. For younger people, ages 18-34 the rate is even higher with 97% agreeing to conditions before reading," (Cakebread, 2017). In readily …

Intermediate C∗-Algebras Of Cartan Embeddings, Jonathan H. Brown, Ruy Exel, Adam H. Fuller, David R. Pitts, Sarah A. Reznikoff

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Let A be a C*-algebra and let D be a Cartan subalgebra of A. We study the following question: if B is a C*-algebra such that D B A, is D a Cartan subalgebra of B? We give a positive answer in two cases: the case when there is a faithful conditional expectation from A onto B, and the case when A is nuclear and D is a C*-diagonal of A. In both cases there is a one-to-one correspondence between the intermediate C*-algebras B, and a class of open subgroupoids of the groupoid G, where ! G is the twist …

Optimal Management Of Virtual Infrastructures Under Flexible Cloud Service Agreements, Zhiling Guo, Jin Li, Ram Ramesh Dec 2019

Optimal Management Of Virtual Infrastructures Under Flexible Cloud Service Agreements, Zhiling Guo, Jin Li, Ram Ramesh

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A cloud service agreement entails the provisioning of a required set of virtual infrastructure resources at a specified level of availability to a client. The agreement also lays out the price charged to the client and a penalty to the provider when the assured availability is not met. The availability assurance involves backup resource provisioning, and the provider needs to allocate backups cost-effectively by balancing the resource-provisioning costs with the potential penalty costs. We develop stochastic dynamic optimization models of the backup resource-provisioning problem, leading to cost-effective resource-management policies in different practical settings. We present two sets of dynamic provisioning …

Bringing Statistical Learning Machines Together For Hydro-Climatological Predictions - Case Study For Sacramento San Joaquin River Basin, California, Balbhadra Thakur, Ajay Kalra, Sajjad Ahmad, Kenneth W. Lamb, Venkat Lakshmi

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Study region: Sacramento San Joaquin River Basin, California Study focus: The study forecasts the streamflow at a regional scale within SSJ river basin with largescale climate variables. The proposed approach eliminates the bias resulting from predefined indices at regional scale. The study was performed for eight unimpaired streamflow stations from 1962–2016. First, the Singular Valued Decomposition (SVD) teleconnections of the streamflow corresponding to 500 mbar geopotential height, sea surface temperature, 500 mbar specific humidity (SHUM500), and 500 mbar U-wind (U500) were obtained. Second, the skillful SVD teleconnections were screened non-parametrically. Finally, the screened teleconnections were used as the streamflow predictors …

Research Methods For Education With Technology: Four Concerns, Examples, And Recommendations, Daniel B. Wright Dec 2019

Research Methods For Education With Technology: Four Concerns, Examples, And Recommendations, Daniel B. Wright

Educational Psychology, Leadership, and Higher Education Faculty Research

The success of education with technology research is in part because the field draws upon theories and methods from multiple disciplines. However, drawing upon multiple disciplines has drawbacks because sometimes the methodological expertise of each discipline is not applied when researchers conduct studies outside of their research training. The focus here is on research using methods drawn largely from psychology, for example, evaluating the impact of different systems on how students perform. The methodological concerns discussed are: low power; not using multilevel modeling; dichotomization; and inaccurate reporting of the numeric statistics. Examples are drawn from a recent set of proceedings. …

With the number of individuals becoming gamers on the rise, it has become ever so important to understand the underlying motivations and social interactions that occur within this video game medium. Research has revealed that player motivation and relatedness within a game setting can be affected by the interpersonal relationships that develop from in game social interactions. This specific study was interested in how interpersonal touch and relatedness gestures, more specifically positive or negative touch conditions within a gameplay experience, can impact both player motivations, as well as inter-player impressions. Additionally, observational data measuring the quality of interaction between the …

Head direction (HD) cells, which fire action potentials whenever an animal points its head in a particular direction, are thought to subserve the animal’s sense of spatial orientation. HD cells are found prominently in several thalamo-cortical regions including anterior thalamic nuclei, postsubiculum, medial entorhinal cortex, parasubiculum, and the parietal cortex. While a number of methods in neural decoding have been developed to assess the dynamics of spatial signals within thalamo-cortical regions, studies conducting a quantitative comparison of machine learning and statistical model-based decoding methods on HD cell activity are currently lacking. Here, we compare statistical model-based and machine learning approaches …

Navigating Uncharted Territory: Experiences Of Families When A Child Has A Neurodegenerative Life Threatening Illness, Rose G. Steele

Dissertations

Children with neurodegenerative, life-threatening illnesses account for a significant proportion of children requiring palliative care. Most of their care is provided at home by their families. Yet, there is a paucity of research that examines families' experiences when a child is dying at home. This grounded theory study generated a contextually-grounded description of families' experiences of living with a child who has a neurodegenerative, life-threatening illness, and how those experiences changed over time; the impact on families; and families' perceptions of factors that influenced their ability to care for their children.

Measuring L2 (Russian) Reading Proficiency Across Various Levels Using Eye Tracking, Anastasiia Nikol Rybakova

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years interest in L2 reading research has focused largely on word frequency, sentence level, word recognition, and several researchers have begun to use eye tracking to better study reading behaviors. Parshina et al. (under review) have found that high proficiency heritage speakers of Russian read faster in terms of gaze duration and total time and had fewer regressions than low proficiency heritage speakers. The current study focuses on the establishment of benchmarks for L2 Russian readers in terms of first fixation duration, gaze duration, and total time when reading a complete passage, and compares these variables among different …

Let-7 Micrornas Regulate Microglial Function And Suppress Glioma Growth Through Toll-Like Receptor 7, Alice Buonfiglioli, David H Gutmann, Et Al

Open Access Publications

Microglia express Toll-like receptors (TLRs) that sense pathogen- and host-derived factors, including single-stranded RNA. In the brain, let-7 microRNA (miRNA) family members are abundantly expressed, and some have recently been shown to serve as TLR7 ligands. We investigated whether let-7 miRNA family members differentially control microglia biology in health and disease. We found that a subset of let-7 miRNA family members function as signaling molecules to induce microglial release of inflammatory cytokines, modulate antigen presentation, and attenuate cell migration in a TLR7-dependent manner. The capability of the let-7 miRNAs to control microglial function is sequence specific, mapping to a let-7 …
