Design Of Efgr Kinase Domain Inhibitors For The Potential Treatment Of Lung And Other Cancers, Jodie Meng '20
Design Of Efgr Kinase Domain Inhibitors For The Potential Treatment Of Lung And Other Cancers, Jodie Meng '20
Student Publications & Research
In 2018 alone, over 18 million cancer-related cases were diagnosed and 9.5 million cancer-related deaths occurred worldwide. As a small-molecule drug orally administered for the treatment of lung and pancreatic cancer, erlotinib (Tarceva®) inhibits the phosphorylation of the tyrosine kinase domain in the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR). Inhibition of EGFR reduces the bioactivity of tumor-associated endothelial cells and interferes with signal pathways involved in metastasis and development of angiogenesis. Increase in drug concentration leads to adverse effects, ranging from rash and nausea to gastrointestinal bleeding, perforation, hepatic failure, among others. Therefore, it is desirable to reduce the toxicity and …
Computer-Aided Drug Design For The Potential Treatment Against Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Alyssa Daniels '20, Rebecca Ellington '19
Computer-Aided Drug Design For The Potential Treatment Against Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Alyssa Daniels '20, Rebecca Ellington '19
Student Publications & Research
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease that can infect any part of the body, but most often infects the lungs. About 9 million people are infected with TB each year, and left untreated, TB is deadly. However, even when treated, Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (MTB), the pathogenic bacteria responsible for TB, can become drug-resistant and patients will need a much more rigorous treatment. Isocitrate lyase (ICL) is an enzyme that allows tuberculosis (and other pathogens) to survive in the body. ICL is an enzyme in the glyoxylate cycle that catalyzes the cleavage of isocitrate to succinate and glyoxylate. MTB is facilitated by this …

Understanding Large Strain Deformation Behavior Of Physically Assembled Triblock [Aba] Copolymer Gels In B-Selective Solvents, Satish Mishra
Understanding Large Strain Deformation Behavior Of Physically Assembled Triblock [Aba] Copolymer Gels In B-Selective Solvents, Satish Mishra
Theses and Dissertations
Physically assembled gels are widely applicable in the food industry, biomedical devices, drug delivery, and soft robotics due to their tunable mechanical properties and thermoreversibility. The mechanical responses of these gels originate from their microstructure. Therefore, factors affecting the gel microstructure like polymer molecular weight, solvent quality, and polymer concentration play a significant role in determining their mechanical behavior. Gel microstructure also changes during the deformations resulting in a deviation from the structure-property relationship established for the low deformations. During large deformations, other factors like stress relaxation, poroelasticity, and polymer chain entanglement contribute significantly to the gel response. This complexity …

The Impact Of Callous-Unemotional Traits And Externalizing Tendencies On Neural Responsivity To Reward And Punishment In Healthy Adolescents, Yonglin Huang, Tingting Wu, Yu Gao, Yuyang Luo, Ziyan Wu, Shawn Fagan, Stephanie Leung, Xiaobo Li
Publications and Research
Both externalizing behavior and callous-unemotional (CU) traits in youth are precursors to later criminal offending in adulthood. It is posited that disruptions in reward and punishment processes may engender problematic behavior, such that CU traits and externalizing behavior may be linked to a dominant reward response style (e.g., heightened responsivity to rewards) and deficient punishment-processing. However, prior research has generated mixed findings and work examining both the sole and joint contribution of CU traits and externalizing problems related to functional brain alterations is lacking. In this pilot functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we measured externalizing behavior and CU traits in …

The improved method runs well and the result is accurate when it is added to the …
Visual Modulation Of Resting State Α Oscillations, Kelly Webster, Tony Ro
Visual Modulation Of Resting State Α Oscillations, Kelly Webster, Tony Ro
Publications and Research
Once thought to simply reflect passive cortical idling, recent studies have demonstrated that α oscillations play a causal role in cognition and perception. However, whether and how cognitive or sensory processes modulate various components of the α rhythm is poorly understood. Sensory input and resting states were manipulated in human subjects while electroencephalography (EEG) activity was recorded in three conditions: eyes-open fixating on a visual stimulus, eyes-open without visual input (darkness), and eyes-closed without visual input (darkness). We show that α power and peak frequency increase when visual input is reduced compared to the eyes open, fixating condition. These results …
Interpreting The Speech Of A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Discourse Analysis: A Qualitative Study Of An Asd Idiolect, Eleni Riris
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This study uses a one-subject, in-depth analysis model to investigate how a 13-year-old child with autism communicates, using the analytical lens of discourse analysis. Using data from five 20-40 minute-long recordings of natural speech, the research subject's use of language in unique or unexpected ways came to be understood as a systematic, consistent, and rich idiolect. These findings challenge pervasive prejudices about individuals with autism and indicate that the most interesting aspects of autistic speech are overlooked by neurotypical listeners. They also demonstrate the importance of discourse analysis as a method for studying autism and language.
