The largest contributors to the uncertainty in assessing the anthropogenic contribution in radiative forcing are the direct and indirect effects of aerosol particles on the Earth's radiative budget. Soot particles are of special interest since their properties can change significantly due to aging processes once they are emitted into the atmosphere. Probably the largest obstacle for the investigation of these processes in the laboratory is the long atmospheric lifetime of 1 week, requiring tailored experiments that cover this time span. In the midst of political turmoil surrounding the Portuguese Revolução dos Cravos (Carnation Revolution), Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen wrote the anthology O Nome das Coisas [“The Name of Things”] (1977). With this historically significant period as the background of her poetry, Andresen addresses the politics of the time with repeated metaphor, particularly the symbol of paper in various forms, such as a poster or a blank page. Through this repeated and evolving symbolism, she illustrates how the anxiousness and oppression of the Portuguese people turned first to relief and rejoicing after the dictatorship fell and then to disappointment …

Book Review Of "Nuclear Deviance: Stigma Politics And The Rules Of The Nonproliferation Game" By Michal Smetana, Sannia Abdullah

International Journal of Nuclear Security

In Nuclear Deviance, the author analyzes why some states are harshly treated by the nonproliferation regime, while others are granted exceptionalism in the existing nuclear order. Michal Smetana, with a new theory of nuclear deviance, describes a complex relationship of stigma politics with power and poses an interesting question for scholars to analyze if “deviance” is a neutral concept. In this scholarly contribution, the author explains that norm violation and deviance observed by state actors do not receive even treatment. “The inherently political character of stigma politics brings up the issue of double standards and divergent treatment of different actors …

The Future of War, by Lawrence Freedman, is a comprehensive work on warfare, its evolution, and its predicted future course which is appropriate for experts and novices alike. Published in 2017, this book contains both historical and contemporary examples of warfare right up to such recent events as the Syrian civil war and the advent of the self-styled Islamic State group. This book is in its first edition and is an excellent marshaling of information on a varied and complex subject.

Impact Of Ischemic Time On Functional Exercise Capacity After Orthotopic Heart Transplantation, Katelyn D. Brown

Purpose: Ischemic time (IT) is an independent risk factor for poor functional exercise capacity (FEC) following orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT). The OHT recipient’s post-transplant FEC (peak VO₂₎ is directly associated with improved quality of life. However, there is debate in the literature about the deleterious impact of extended IT on FEC following OHT.

Methods: Fifteen OHT recipients (14 men and 1 woman; < 3 months from OHT) performed a symptom-limited graded CPET where peak VO₂ was measured in an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation. IT was obtained from the anesthesia post-operative note. VO₂ and IT values were dichotomized based on previous literature; high, ≥14 mL/kg/min (or ≥12 mL/kg/min if taking a beta …

OBJECTIVES: Reconstruction of the midface has many inherent challenges, including orbital support, skull base reconstruction, optimizing midface projection, separation of the nasal cavity and dental rehabilitation. Subscapular system free flaps (SF) have sufficient bone stock to support complex reconstruction and the option of separate soft tissue components. This study analyzes the effect of virtual surgical planning (VSP) in SF for midface on subsite reconstruction, bone segment contact and anatomic position.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective cohort of patients with midface defects that underwent SF reconstruction at a single tertiary care institution.

Non-Hispanic black children consume greater amounts of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and are at disproportionately high risk for obesity and other SSB-related health problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between caregivers' beliefs, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, past behavior, and intention to serve SSBs to non- Hispanic black preschoolers. The researcher conducted a cross-sectional, correlational study using multiple regression with path analysis using the Expanded Theory of Planned Behavior as the theoretical framework.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the impact and relationship between empowerment through choice of literary work and hand-selection “on-level” books within public schools, precisely grade three, in the West-Central region of Minnesota. Twenty-three third graders completed a written questionnaire before and after the study to determine their preference when reading for enjoyment using a Richter Scale. Upon completion of the study, students’ Accelerated Reader scores, a tool for comprehension, were thoroughly analyzed and calculated. This research is about repeated readings among 5th graders and the effect of praise or acknowledgement of different areas on a student's reading comprehension and fluency. Three test groups were given a six week intervention of repeated readings with one group receiving praise for fluency gains, one for comprehension gains and one group was give no praise. After six weeks of intervention, benchmark assessments were given to the three groups as well as the control.

The purpose of this study was to acquire additional knowledge into the lived experiences of counseling interns and their perception of readiness for multicultural counseling. A phenomenological approached was used to understand the lived experiences and describe the essence of the phenomenon. Master’s level counseling interns (N=8) in CACREP accredited programs were surveyed in which they responded to five open-end question related to their experience. From those responses two themes emerged, participants described their perceived preparedness related to their mindfulness and education with diverse populations. Kindergarten students with a Developmental Delay need to learn in a way that is developmentally appropriate through play and experiences. This study investigated the use of Foundations for Literacy, a play based and experiential based literacy intervention, to allow Kindergarten students with a Developmental Delay learn to read in a developmentally appropriate way. Students were taught code based and meaning based literacy skills through play and experiences using Foundations for Literacy.
