These portraits include Thomas Mütter (the father of American Plastic Surgery), John Chalmers DaCosta (a master educator) and John H. Gibbon, Jr., inventor of the heart-lung machine.

When Hahnemann Hospital announced at the end of June that it was closing its doors, 571 residents and fellows were suddenly facing an uncertain future. By July 5, the Thomas Jefferson University Department of Surgery had conducted interviews with 18 soon-to-be-displaced residents and extended invitations to four: William Preston, MD (PGY1), Darshak Thosani, MD (PGY2), Madison Crutcher, MD (PGY3) and Robert Kucejko, MD (PGY4). All four accepted and are now active members of the Jefferson surgery program.

Dang Laboratory Explores Novel Approaches To Diagnosing, Treating Liver Cancer

Since its launch on October 1, 2018, the Dang Laboratory has been dedicated to the study of novel approaches to diagnosing and treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most common type of liver cancer. The lab, which is part of the Division of Surgical Research, recently secured two grants and is led by Hien Dang, PhD, with support from Postdoctoral Fellow Kai Zhang, PhD, and Lab Technician Anna Barry, MS.

The purpose of the research was to study PONV syndrome at 44 (3 from 7 years old) children with celiac operations (Hirschsprung's disease, enteroanastomosis, atresia ani and recti, atresia of the biliary tract, dolichosigma, abdominal perineal rectoplastysplenectomy, enterokistoma, acute intestinal obstruction, Meckel diverticulums)/ They were divided into 2 groups on principles prevention and treatment PONV (standard and proposed) for 1 day-operative period. In one group of patients (20) PONV syndrome was observed at 2 (4,54%) infants: nausea and vomiting was one (2,72%) and in group from 2 to 9 (20,45%) patients. The analysis of history cases for 88 patients (children and adolescents) were treated at city department of purulent surgery at clinical surgical pediatrics hospital CCCSPH №2, from 2006 to 2016. Rational conservative treatment (puncture with washing articulation cavities with antiseptic solutions; anti¬inflammatory, antibacterial, immunostimulating, desensitizating therapy) promotes to clinical cure on hospital stage at 98,8% children and teenagers. The complicated course of inflammatory processis developed at the result of penetrating pathogenic microflora,infections in articulation through hematogenic and lymphagenic ways in 93,4% patiens and also through all kinds of traumas in 6,6% cases.

Fueled in part by recent applications in neuroscience, high-dimensional Hawkes process have become a popular tool for modeling the network of interactions among multivariate point process data. While evaluating the uncertainty of the network estimates is critical in scientific applications, existing methodological and theoretical work have only focused on estimation. To bridge this gap, this paper proposes a high-dimensional statistical inference procedure with theoretical guarantees for multivariate Hawkes process. Key to this inference procedure is a new concentration inequality on the first- and second-order statistics for integrated stochastic processes, which summarizes the entire history of the process. Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are destructive wood-boring insects of horticultural trees. We evaluated long-lasting insecticide netting for protecting stems against ambrosia beetles. Container-grown eastern redbud, Cercis canadensis, trees were flood-stressed to induce ambrosia beetle attacks, and deltamethrin-treated netting was wrapped from the base of the stem vertically to the branch junction. Trees were deployed under field conditions in Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee, and Mississippi with the following treatments: (1) flooded tree; (2) flooded tree with untreated netting; (3) flooded tree with treated ‘standard mesh’ netting of 24 holes/cm²; (4) flooded tree with treated ‘fine mesh’ netting of 28 …

Agronomic Or Contentious Land Change? A Longitudinal Analysis From The Eastern Brazilian Amazon, Stephen Aldrich, Cynthia S. Simmons, Eugenio Arima, Robert T. Walker, Fernando Michelotti, Edna Castro

Department of Earth and Environmental Systems

Since 1984, nearly 1,000 people have been killed in the Brazilian Amazon due to land conflicts stemming from unequal distribution of land, land tenure insecurity, and lawlessness. During this same period, the region experienced almost complete deforestation (< 8% forest cover by 2010). Land conflict exacts a human toll, but it also affects agents’ decisions about land use, the subject of this article. Using a property-level panel dataset covering the period of redemocratization in Brazil (1984) until the privatization of long-term leases in the eastern Amazon (2010), we show that deforestation is affected by land conflict, particularly in cases of expropriation of property for agrarian reform settlement formation. Deforestation on these settlements is much greater when soils are poor for agriculture and when the land has been the object of past conflict. Deforestation and conflict are episodic, and both agronomic drivers and contentious drivers of land change are active in the region. Ultimately, the outcome of these processes of contentious and agronomic land change is substantial deforestation, regardless of who was in possession and control of the land.

This work consists of three different projects.

In the first project, I analyze complexly sampled survey data, representative of the US population, to determine what lifestyle behaviors and notions held by participants are most significant with having had a cancer diagnosis. A logistic regression model was built using automatic variable selection with forward selection with backwards elimination. Our results show that sunscreen usage, level of agreeing with the statement "behaviors can affect high blood pressure", age, intent to eat more or less fruit, average daily hours spent watching tv or playing video games, and level of agreeing with the statement …

During major storm events in 2011 and 2012 (Tropical Storm Irene, Storm Alfred, Hurricane Sandy), approximately 90% of power outages in Connecticut were caused by falling trees or limbs. The storms brought attention to the vulnerability of utility infrastructure and, in response, more focus was placed on vegetation management. People play a role in each step of the vegetation management process: government and utility officials planning for infrastructure resilience, tree crews conducting the management, and property owners mediating management by consenting or objecting to proposed tree pruning and removal.
