Variation In Growth And Defence Traits Among Plant Populations At Different Elevations: Implications For Adaptation To Climate Change, James Buckley, Alex Widmer, Mark C. Mescher, Moraes Cm De Jan 2019

Variation In Growth And Defence Traits Among Plant Populations At Different Elevations: Implications For Adaptation To Climate Change, James Buckley, Alex Widmer, Mark C. Mescher, Moraes Cm De

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Alpine plants occurring at high elevation are vulnerable to ongoing climate change, yet relatively little is known about the potential for high-elevation species to adapt to changing environmental conditions. In particular, the extent to which high-elevation plants will be able to resist predicted increases in the intensity of biotic interactions, such as herbivory, remains unclear. Species distributed across broad elevational ranges provide an opportunity to investigate evolutionary mechanisms and traits involved in adaptation to varying abiotic and biotic environments. This study focused on the perennial alpine plant Arabis alpina and combined field surveys and climate chamber experiments to test for …

Abstract Background Variability in standard-of-care classifications precludes accurate predictions of early tumor recurrence for individual patients with meningioma, limiting the appropriate selection of patients who would benefit from adjuvant radiotherapy to delay recurrence. We aimed to develop an individualized prediction model of early recurrence risk combining clinical and molecular factors in meningioma. Methods DNA methylation profiles of clinically annotated tumor samples across multiple institutions were used to develop a methylome model of 5-year recurrence-free survival (RFS). Subsequently, a 5-year meningioma recurrence score was generated using a nomogram that integrated the methylome model with established prognostic clinical factors. Performance of both …

An Analytical Solution Of Distortional Buckling Resistance Of Cold-Formed Steel Channel-Section Beams With Web Openings, Boksun Kim, N Yu, Wei Bin Yuan, Long Yuan Li, F Yu Jan 2019

An Analytical Solution Of Distortional Buckling Resistance Of Cold-Formed Steel Channel-Section Beams With Web Openings, Boksun Kim, N Yu, Wei Bin Yuan, Long Yuan Li, F Yu

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Circular holes can be commonly found in the web of cold-formed steel beams to accommodate services such as electric wires and pipelines. The presence of holes will reduce the critical buckling stress of the beams. Hancock proposed solution for determining the distortional critical stress of channel section beams, but limited to the sections without holes. This paper presents an analytical study on the distortional buckling of cold-formed steel channel-section beams with circular holes in the web. Hancock's solution has been modified to derive a simple formulation for approximating the elastic critical stress and moment of distortional buckling of the channel-section …

Environmental Loading Of Heritage Structures, Alison Raby, Alessandro Antonini, Dina D'Ayala, James M.W. Brownjohn

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Introduction This Special Issue, featuring Environmental Loading of Heritage Structures, provides a snapshot of current civil engineering approaches to assessing ageing structures under a variety of loads. The publication arose from a serendipitous sequence of interactions. Academics at the University of Plymouth were contacted by Trinity House in 2010 to investigate reported vibrations in their rock lighthouses when impacted by storm waves. A pilot study on the nearby Eddystone lighthouse, captured structural response data from the catastrophic storms of 2013/14, and paved the way for a more comprehensive project. The STORMLAMP project brought together expertise across various civil engineering disciplines: …

Background: Despite technological innovations and continuous improvement in evidence-based treatments, mortality in the intensive care unit remains high. Consequently, a large group of family members may be in need, and benefit from bereavement follow-up support. Aim: To explore elements, organization, and evaluation of ICU bereavement services in European countries. Specific objectives were to investigate: 1) the model of bereavement follow-up services (elements of support), 2) the workforce model (organization of staff), 3) the evaluation model (evaluation strategies). Study design: Cross-sectional survey of conference delegates. Methods: A paper and pen questionnaire including a cover letter assuring the respondents of anonymity and …

Perioperative Oxidative Stress: The Unseen Enemy, Jia L. Stevens, Martin Feelisch, Daniel S. Martin Jan 2019

Perioperative Oxidative Stress: The Unseen Enemy, Jia L. Stevens, Martin Feelisch, Daniel S. Martin

Peninsula Medical School

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential for cellular signaling and physiological function. An imbalance between ROS production and antioxidant protection results in a state of oxidative stress (OS), which is associated with perturbations in reduction/oxidation (redox) regulation, cellular dysfunction, organ failure, and disease. The pathophysiology of OS is closely interlinked with inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and, in the case of surgery, ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). Perioperative OS is a complex response that involves patient, surgical, and anesthetic factors. The magnitude of tissue injury inflicted by the surgery affects the degree of OS, and both duration and nature of the anesthetic procedure applied …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

AbstractVanadium mining activities can cause contamination of the surrounding geological environment. Vanadium may exist in multiple matrices due to its migration and transformation, forming interactive relationships; however, the connection between vanadium distributions in multiple matrices and microbial community responses remains largely unknown. Vanadium is a redox‐sensitive metal that can be microbiologically reduced and immobilized. To date, bioremediation of vanadium‐contaminated environments by indigenous microorganisms has rarely been evaluated. This paper reports a systematic investigation into vanadium distributions and microbial communities in soils, water, and sediment from Panzhihua, China. Large vanadium contents of 1130.1 ± 9.8 mg/kg and 0.13 ± 0.02 mg/L …

Trichoderma species are known for their ability to produce lytic enzymes, such as exoglucanases, endoglucanases, chitinases, and proteases, which play important roles in cell wall degradation of phytopathogens. β-glucanases play crucial roles in the morphogenetic-morphological process during the development and differentiation processes in Trichoderma species, which have β-glucans as the primary components of their cell walls. Despite the importance of glucanases in the mycoparasitism of Trichoderma spp., only a few functional analysis studies have been conducted on glucanases. In the present study, we used a functional genomics approach to investigate the functional role of the gluc31 gene, which encodes an …
