Elucidating The Surface Geometric Design Of Hydrophobic Australian Eucalyptus Leaves: Experimental And Modeling Studies, Hua Guo, Zonghan Xie, Jeremy Shaw, Kingsley Dixon, Zhong-Tao Jiang, Chun-Yang Yin, Xuemei Liu

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Three Australian native Eucalyptus species, i.e., Eucalyptus woodwardii, Eucalyptus pachyphylla and Eucalyptus dolorosa, were investigated, for the first time, with respect to the hydrophobicity of their leaves. It is well established that these leaves exhibit exceptionally high water repellency, in addition to an extraordinary ability to retain water, albeit their specific wetting mechanisms are still poorly understood. To identify the critical factors underlying this phenomenon, the surface topography of these leaves was subjected to micro-examination (SEM). Micro- and nanometer scale surface roughness was revealed, resembling that of the quintessential “lotus effect”. Surface free energy analysis was performed on two models …

Taylor's Slope Stability Chart For Combined Effects Of Horizontal And Vertical Seismic Coefficients, Pragyan Sahoo, Sanjay Kumar Shukla Jan 2019

Taylor's Slope Stability Chart For Combined Effects Of Horizontal And Vertical Seismic Coefficients, Pragyan Sahoo, Sanjay Kumar Shukla

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Design standards and codes of practice on earth slope stability often recommend the pseudo-static method of analysis for determining the factor of safety of a slope subjected to seismic forces. In most pseudo-static methods of analysis, the horizontal seismic force is considered without due weightage to vertical seismic force. In the past, Taylor's stability chart for a homogeneous cohesive-frictional soil slope has been extended to consider the effect of horizontal seismic force only. In this paper, an attempt is made to develop an analytical formulation considering both horizontal and vertical seismic forces in order to estimate the factor of safety …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Cutaneous melanoma circulating tumour cells (CTCs) are phenotypically and molecularly heterogeneous. We profiled the gene expression of CTC subpopulations immunomagnetic-captured by targeting either the melanoma-associated marker, MCSP, or the melanoma-initiating marker, ABCB5. Firstly, the expression of a subset of melanoma genes was investigated by RT-PCR in MCSP-enriched and ABCB5-enriched CTCs isolated from a total of 59 blood draws from 39 melanoma cases. Of these, 6 MCSP-and 6 ABCB5-enriched CTC fractions were further analysed using a genome-wide gene expression microarray. The transcriptional programs of both CTC subtypes included cell survival maintenance, cell proliferation, and migration pathways. ABCB5-enriched CTCs were specifically characterised …

Real-Time Classification Of Multivariate Olfaction Data Using Spiking Neural Networks, Arnup Vanarse, Adam Osseiran, Alexander Rassau, Therese O'Sullivan, Jonny Lo, Amanda Devine

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Recent studies in bioinspired artificial olfaction, especially those detailing the application of spike-based neuromorphic methods, have led to promising developments towards overcoming the limitations of traditional approaches, such as complexity in handling multivariate data, computational and power requirements, poor accuracy, and substantial delay for processing and classification of odors. Rank-order-based olfactory systems provide an interesting approach for detection of target gases by encoding multi-variate data generated by artificial olfactory systems into temporal signatures. However, the utilization of traditional pattern-matching methods and unpredictable shuffling of spikes in the rank-order impedes the performance of the system. In this paper, we present an …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Forming stable anti-corrosion surface layer and homogenized microstructure on the surface of material has become a major challenge in developing biomedical β titanium alloy. In the study, TiO 2 /Ti-35Nb-2Ta-3Zr anti-corrosion micro/nano-composites with different amount of TiO 2 particles were successfully fabricated by one-pass friction stir processing (FSP). The composition, microstructure and electrochemical properties of the material are characterized systematically. In particular, compact passive oxide films formed on surface of the material after electrochemical corrosion are elaborated from constituent, thickness and structural characteristics. Furthermore, the relationship between various FSP parameters, microstructure presented and corresponding corrosion resistance has been discussed in …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Previous studies suggest grandparental childcare is associated with improved health and well-being of grandparents but limited information on the causal nature of this association exists. Here, we use the longitudinal Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) of people aged 50 and above across 11 countries including follow-up waves between 2004 and 2015 (n = 41,713 person-observations from 24,787 unique persons of whom 11,102 had two or more measurement times). Between-person and within-person (or fixed-effect) regressions were applied, where between-person models show associations across participants and within-person models focus on each participant's variation over time. Health and well-being …

Gelatinous Zooplankton Abundance And Benthic Boundary Layer Currents In The Abyssal Northeast Pacific: A 3-Yr Time Series Study, Kenneth Smith, Christine Huffard, Paul Mcgill, Alana Sherman, Thomas Connolly, Susan Von Thun, Linda Kuhnz

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Gelatinous zooplankton are prominent fauna in the deep ocean, especially in the water column associated with the sea floor. This interface zone, the benthic boundary layer, is critical to biogeochemical exchanges between pelagic and benthic communities. A conspicuous member of this benthic boundary layer community in the abyssal Northeast Pacific (Sta. M; 4000 m depth) is the hydrozoan medusa, Benthocodon pedunculata. A 3-year time-series study was conducted of B. pedunculata from October 2014 to November 2017 using an autonomous time-lapse camera system and acoustic current meter deployed on the sea floor. Remotely operated vehicle benthic video transects and collections were …

Current Cybersecurity Maturity Models: How Effective In Healthcare Cloud?, Oo Akinsanya, M Papadaki, L Sun Jan 2019

Current Cybersecurity Maturity Models: How Effective In Healthcare Cloud?, Oo Akinsanya, M Papadaki, L Sun

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This research investigates the effective assessment of healthcare cyber security maturity models for healthcare organizations actively using cloud computing. Healthcare cyber security maturity models designate a collection of capabilities expected in a healthcare organization and facilitate its ability to identify where their practices are weak or absent and where they are truly embedded. However, these assessment practices are sometimes considered not effective because sole compliance to standards does not produce objective assessment outputs, and the performance measurements of individual IS components does not depict the overall security posture of a healthcare organization. They also do not consider the effect of …

Fast Predictive Maintenance In Industrial Internet Of Things (Iiot) With Deep Learning (Dl): A Review, T Rieger, S Regier, I Stengel, N Clarke

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Applying Deep Learning in the field of Industrial Internet of Things is a very active research field. The prediction of failures of machines and equipment in industrial environments before their possible occurrence is also a very popular topic, significantly because of its cost saving potential. Predictive Maintenance (PdM) applications can benefit from DL, especially because of the fact that high complex, non-linear and unlabeled (or partially labeled) data is the normal case. Especially with PdM applications being used in connected smart factories, low latency predictions are essential. Because of this real-time processing becomes more important. The aim of this paper …

Characterisation Of Fatigue Crack Growth Using Digital Image Correlation Measurements Of Plastic Ctod, Jm Vasco-Olmo, Fa Díaz, Fv Antunes, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) was measured using digital image correlation (DIC) and resolved into elastic and plastic CTOD components via an offset compliance technique. The plastic CTOD range gave a single linear correlation for fatigue crack growth rate at stress ratios of 0.1 and 0.6 in compact-tension (CT) specimens of Grade 2 titanium. A sensitivity analysis was performed to find the optimum position in the crack wake to make the CTOD measurements. The results are the first time (to the authors knowledge) that plastic CTOD has been found directly from experimentation and demonstrate that plastic CTOD is a useful …

The review of recent IMS security activities stresses the inclusion of intermediate nodes in the media path of secured communications as an open issue. This paper presents an end-to-middle-to-end solution which enables the usage of IMS media plane elements such as recorders, transcoders and novel cross-ciphering functions in a secure way. The proposed solution, which is fully compliant with IMS, …

#Brexit Vs. #Stopbrexit: What Is Trendier? An Nlp Analysis, M Palomino, A Murali Jan 2019

#Brexit Vs. #Stopbrexit: What Is Trendier? An Nlp Analysis, M Palomino, A Murali

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Online trends have established themselves as a new method of information propagation that is reshaping journalism in the digital age. We argue that sentiment analysis—the classification of human emotion expressed in text—can enhance existing algorithms for trend discovery. By highlighting topics that are polarised, sentiment analysis can offer insight into the influence of users who are involved in a trend, and how other users adopt such a trend. As a case study, we have investigated a highly topical subject: Brexit, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. We retrieved an experimental corpus of publicly available tweets referring …

The Conclusion From One Million Tonnes Of Experience In Galvanizing Steel – Lmac Is Not A Primary Instigator Of Cracking, C Leighfield, Mn James Jan 2019

The Conclusion From One Million Tonnes Of Experience In Galvanizing Steel – Lmac Is Not A Primary Instigator Of Cracking, C Leighfield, Mn James

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In the period 2000–2006 occasional instances of serious service cracking in galvanized structural steelwork were detected. At the time it was suggested that the cracks had occurred during the galvanizing process, been covered up by the zinc coating and then opened up during service. Several significant European-wide research projects were initiated to identify and understand the mechanisms that control LMAC during hot dip galvanizing. However, experience in the UK has shown that the frequency of cracking of structural steel during galvanizing is very low, and that when it does occur it is almost invariably due to known factors that influence …

Fatigue Life Prediction For Rotary Friction Welded Ti-6al-4v Under Variable Amplitude Fatigue Loading, Der Merwe Hb Van, Mn James, Dg Hattingh, W Rall

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The present paper considers variable amplitude fatigue lifing for rotary friction welds in Grade 23 6Al-4V titanium alloy. The work reported in this paper aimed firstly at optimising the parameters necessary to successfully rotary weld 6 mm diameter hourglass specimens of Ti-6Al-4V and, secondly, at generating CA stress-life (S-N) fatigue data to underpin a VA fatigue life prediction that was then experimentally verified against the results obtained from VA fatigue testing using an 3200 turning point sequence extracted from the simulated aircraft load spectrum mini-FALSTAFF (a modified Fighter Aircraft Loading Standard for Fatigue). It was found that the real damage …

Gender Incongruence In Children, Adolescents And Adults, Susan Bewley, Damian Clifford, Margaret Mccartney, Richard Byng

Peninsula Medical School

More individuals are requesting medical assistance for gender uncertainty or dysphoria and provision of adult NHS gender identity services (GIS) is changing. Despite minimal medical input to polarised debates, several issues are potentially concerning: reports of poor care; rapid rises in referrals of children and young people to GIS; public conflation of biological sex with socially influenced gender roles; and extensive uncertainty in the evidence base to guide practice. Medical practice should happen within robust human rights frameworks where individual patients always have their concerns heard. Generalists, with expertise in whole-person care, handling uncertainty and complexity, have a key role …
