The most recent decadal phase of scientific ocean drilling through the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) has resulted in paradigm-shifting understanding of life below the seafloor. Enabled by new drilling and coring approaches, cutting-edge methodologies, and novel observatory science, IODP expeditions have significantly advanced understanding of the amount and diversity of subseafloor life, the metabolic strategies that this life uses to survive under extreme energy limitation, and consequences of this life for the Earth system. Here, we summarize highlights from recent IODP expeditions focused on life beneath the seafloor and emphasize remaining major science challenges in investigating the form and …

Oleander Is More Than A Flower: Twenty-Five Years Of Oceanography Aboard A Merchant Vessel, Thomas Rossby, Charles N. Flagg, Kathleen A. Donohue, Sandra Fontana, Ruth Curry, Magdalena Andres, Jacob Forsyth

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Since late fall 1992, CMV Oleander III has been measuring upper ocean currents during its weekly trips between Bermuda and Port Elizabeth, New Jersey, by means of an acoustic Doppler current profiler installed in its hull. The overarching objective of this effort has been to monitor transport in the Gulf Stream and surrounding waters. With 25 years of observation in hand, we note that the Gulf Stream exhibits significant year-to-year variations but no evident long-term trend in transport. We show how these data have enabled studies of oceanic variability over a very wide range of scales, from a few kilometers …

A Direct Comparison Of Biplanar Videoradiography And Optical Motion Capture For Foot And Ankle Kinematics, Sarah E. Kessler, Michael J. Rainbow, Glen A. Lichtwark, Andrew G. Cresswell, Susan E. D'Andrea, Nicolai Konow, Luke A. Kelly

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Measuring motion of the human foot presents a unique challenge due to the large number of closely packed bones with congruent articulating surfaces. Optical motion capture (OMC) and multi-segment models can be used to infer foot motion, but might be affected by soft tissue artifact (STA). Biplanar videoradiography (BVR) is a relatively new tool that allows direct, non-invasive measurement of bone motion using high-speed, dynamic x-ray images to track individual bones. It is unknown whether OMC and BVR can be used interchangeably to analyse multi-segment foot motion. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the agreement in kinematic …

Biochemistry: Production Of Recombinant Rh Blood Group Antigens For Detection Of Alloimmunisation, Mashael Alkhanbashi Jan 2019

Biochemistry: Production Of Recombinant Rh Blood Group Antigens For Detection Of Alloimmunisation, Mashael Alkhanbashi

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Due to the importance of the antigen/ antibody reaction, all hospitals and blood banks worldwide rely on routine blood group phenotyping of samples. Using recombinant antigens removes the disadvantage of the current antibody screening when using the human red blood cells, which can complicate the detection of antibody in di erent cases: in the case of multi-transfused individuals and in the case of weak antigens. Although constructing recombinant antigens for some blood group antigens has been achieved successfully, such as; Kell, Du y and Lutheran blood group antigens, no studies have been published describing successful production of RH recombinant antigens …

Investigation Of Ccn1 Role(S) In Mantle Cell Lymphoma (Mcl), Afak R S Zaidi Jan 2019

Investigation Of Ccn1 Role(S) In Mantle Cell Lymphoma (Mcl), Afak R S Zaidi

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL) is a comparatively rare non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma which is characterised by the overexpression of cyclin D1. Many patients present with or progress to advanced stage disease within three years. Disease progression involves down regulation of cyclin D1. Moreover, MCL is broadly considered as an incurable disease with median survival of patients being 3-4 years. CCN1, a matricellular protein involved in stem cell signalling within the haematopoietic microenvironment is highly expressed in early stage MCL cells and down-regulated in advanced stage disease. We have used the human MCL cell lines REC1

An Exploration Of Sharps Injuries Within A Nursing Student Population In The Uk, Kevin Hambridge Jan 2019

An Exploration Of Sharps Injuries Within A Nursing Student Population In The Uk, Kevin Hambridge

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Percutaneous injuries, such as sharps injuries, can transmit up to 60 different types of pathogen (Tarantola et al., 2006) to the injured party. Whilst up to 100% of some nursing student populations sustain sharps injuries (Trivedi et al., 2013), a dearth of research studies investigating the topic worldwide exist. It is unknown within the UK the devices contributing to sharps injuries, the incidence rates and the locations where they occur. The aims of this study were to identify the characteristics of sharps injuries within a nursing student population within the UK; to explore the experience of sharps injuries, concentrating on …

Drp1 Inhibition Is Protective Against Mitochondrial And Autophagic Impairment Induced By Alpha-Synuclein, Zhangqiuzi Fan Jan 2019

Drp1 Inhibition Is Protective Against Mitochondrial And Autophagic Impairment Induced By Alpha-Synuclein, Zhangqiuzi Fan

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder with currently no effective neuroprotective or neurorestorative treatments available. Alpha-synuclein (α-syn) pathology is one of the key proteins involved in PD pathology, it has been found to induce mitochondrial dysfunction, yet the mechanism is not entirely understood. This thesis project tests the hypothesis that α-syn induces mitochondrial dysfunction through disruption of fission/fusion pathway. Using an inducible cell line, I successfully demonstrated that in a time-dependent manner α-syn overexpression induces mitochondrial fragmentation through disruption of fission/fusion dynamics, collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential, increased oxidative stress and impaired mitochondrial respiratory capacity. In …

The Role Of Cd133 In Mouse Incisor Tooth Epithelium, Donald Singer Jan 2019

The Role Of Cd133 In Mouse Incisor Tooth Epithelium, Donald Singer

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Since its discovery, CD133 has been used to identify, isolate and characterise many different stem cell types across a wide variety of tissues. Nonetheless, to date not much has been elucidated about its function in these cells. The continuously growing mouse incisor contains a large population of epithelial stem cells that drive the constant need for enamel generation. Using this model, this project aims to elucidate the role of CD133 in epithelial stem cell renewal and activation. After validating the presence of CD133 in the developing mouse incisor epithelium, this project compared the dental epithelial stem cell dynamics of wildtype …

The Effects Of Prolonged Running On The Biomechanics And Function Of The Foot And Ankle, Emma Cowley Jan 2019

The Effects Of Prolonged Running On The Biomechanics And Function Of The Foot And Ankle, Emma Cowley

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Running injuries have been linked to morphology and lower limb function, and changes in foot and ankle biomechanics and function within a run may contribute to the predisposition to injury. This thesis investigates the effects of prolonged running on the foot and ankle, and potential mechanisms underlying changes in foot posture. Methods: A series of studies were undertaken from field to laboratory, measuring foot posture changes after prolonged running of different durations. Further measures of ankle invertor strength and medial ankle stiffness were taken in the laboratory studies as well as kinematic and plantar pressure data captured every ten minutes …

The Nature Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli St127, Robert William O'Hara Jan 2019

The Nature Of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli St127, Robert William O'Hara

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli ST127 is a recently emerged clone that is reported to cause a small, but significant, proportion of urinary tract infections. Paradoxically, the low prevalence of ST127 in most published studies is also accompanied by a virulence potential significantly higher than many of the leading uropathogenic lineages (cf. ST131) using an established uropathogenic PCR virulence assay. This study explores the contradictory nature of these findings by evaluating some of the major aspects concerning the diagnosis, genomic repertoire and pathogenicity of strains of this sequence type in relation to its recorded prevalence. Analysis was performed to determine if UPEC …

A Proteomics Approach To Investigate Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Nizar Hamed E Saeedi Jan 2019

A Proteomics Approach To Investigate Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Nizar Hamed E Saeedi

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the most commonly known cause of urinary tract infection (UTI). The possession of many virulence factors and global dissemination of multi-drug resistant UPEC strains is posing a critical risk to treatment worldwide. The most virulent UPEC strains have descended from major lineages such as sequence type (ST) 131, ST38 and ST127. Strains of ST127 exhibit the highest virulence potential of most UPEC lineages, but little is known about their pathogenicity. Previous studies have reported the important role of metabolic adaptations in UPEC virulence. This study investigated the metabolic adaptations of UPEC isolates, with a focus …

An Electrophysiological Investigation Of Embodied Language Processing, Isabel Marijana Feven-Parsons Jan 2019

An Electrophysiological Investigation Of Embodied Language Processing, Isabel Marijana Feven-Parsons

Other Faculty of Health Theses

How we draw meaning from strings of letters is one of the most popular topics under discussion in cognitive science. Traditional theories posited that words represent amodal symbols and meaning is derived through their relationship to other amodal symbols (Galetzka, 2017). The problem with this cognitivist approach is that it was unclear how these symbols came to have meaning, known as the “grounding problem” (Harnad, 1990; Searle, 1980). Theories of embodied cognition were developed in an attempt to resolve this issue (Barsalou, 1999; Glenberg & Robertson, 1999). For example, the Indexical Hypothesis proposed that nouns are indexed to mental representations …

Social Anxiety And Paranoia: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Sophie Homer Jan 2019

Social Anxiety And Paranoia: A Mixed-Methods Investigation, Sophie Homer

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Social anxiety is highly prevalent and highly debilitating. It is detrimental to educational and occupational progression as well as quality of life for up to 12% of the population. Current research, treatment, and diagnostic criteria maintain that the cause of anxiety in social situations is self-focused fear, usually of personal inadequacy, but social situations invariably involve both the self and other people. This thesis draws upon the paranoia literature to inform arguments about the role of negative perceptions of others in social anxiety. I propound a novel theoretical model of the core fears underlying social anxiety. I argue that anxiety …

Medical Microbiology: Discovery Of New Antimicrobial Drugs To Treat Clinically Relevant Antibiotic Resistant Pathogenic Bacteria, Abdu Hussein A. Aldarhami Jan 2019

Medical Microbiology: Discovery Of New Antimicrobial Drugs To Treat Clinically Relevant Antibiotic Resistant Pathogenic Bacteria, Abdu Hussein A. Aldarhami

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest world-wide threats to human health and urgent action is needed to reduce the potentially devastating social and economic impacts that may result from continued spread of drug resistant infections. These actions include discovery of new antibiotics and community engagement in AMR. Natural product screening methods are arguably the most efficient way to identify novel antibiotics, but can be frustrated by the repeated discovery of known compounds, wasting valuable resources, effort and time. Thus, exploiting obscure, hard to reach environments and implementing combined bioinformatic and proteomic screening approaches may short-cut the process of …

A Psychophysical Investigation Of Quantum Cognition: An Interdisciplinary Synthesis, Christopher Germann Jan 2019

A Psychophysical Investigation Of Quantum Cognition: An Interdisciplinary Synthesis, Christopher Germann

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Quantum cognition is an interdisciplinary emerging field within the cognitive sciences which applies various axioms of quantum mechanics to cognitive processes. This thesis reports the results of several empirical investigations which focus on the applicability of quantum cognition to psychophysical perceptual processes. Specifically, we experimentally tested several a priori hypotheses concerning 1) constructive measurement effects in sequential perceptual judgments and 2) noncommutativity in the measurement of psychophysical observables. In order to establish the generalisability of our findings, we evaluated our prediction across different sensory modalities (i.e., visual versus auditory perception) and in cross-cultural populations (United Kingdom and India). Given the …

A Randomised Controlled Feasibility Trial To Investigate The Effects Of A Functional Standing Frame Programme Versus Usual Physiotherapy To Improve Function And Quality Of Life And Reduce Neuromuscular Impairment In People With Severe Sub-Acute Stroke, Angie Logan

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Background Task-related training can aid functional recovery post-stroke but has not been investigated in people with severe stroke. Orthostatic hypotension (OH) may limit rehabilitation, therefore, the effects of undertaking prolonged standing and sit to stand repetitions (functional standing frame programme) early after severe stroke during inpatient sub-acute rehabilitation is unknown. Methods A systematic review of non-pharmacological interventions to treat OH in people with neurological conditions was undertaken to inform a protocol for the management of OH during the functional standing frame programme. The feasibility of a blinded randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigating the effects of a functional standing frame programme …

Attention, Context And The Inverse Base Rate Effect, Angus B Inkster Jan 2019

Attention, Context And The Inverse Base Rate Effect, Angus B Inkster

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The Inverse Base Rate Effect (IBRE; Medin & Edelson, 1988) is a non-rational behavioural phenomenon reported within the learning literature. A considerable amount of research has investigated the effect, as well as other effects that occur in onjunction with it. The EXIT model (Kruschke, 2001a) is widely considered to be the best formal explanation of the IBRE and is based on an error-driven attentional account. This thesis aims to further existing research, investigating unexplored avenues and providing new datasets with which to test the capabilities of the EXIT model. Chapter 1 provides a review of the research surrounding the IBRE …

The Influence Of Online Reviews On Saudi Consumers’ Tourism Destination Choices, Arej Alhemimah Jan 2019

The Influence Of Online Reviews On Saudi Consumers’ Tourism Destination Choices, Arej Alhemimah

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Online consumer reviews (OCRs) can be key aspects of how tourists choose a travel destination. OCRs are particularly important for experiential purchases such as tourism destinations, because consumers have difficulty assessing the quality of intangible products prior to consumption. OCRs can thus shape preconceptions or expectations about a destination for potential tourists, subsequently influencing visit intention. Social influence impacts adoption intention, but this relationship in the context of tourism OCRs and destination choice has largely been ignored, despite the fact that tourism often involves travel across different cultures. The aim of this research is to investigate the influence of OCRs …
