Exhibiting Sovereignty: Tribal Museums In The Great Lakes Region, 1969-2010, Meagan Mcchesney Jan 2019

Exhibiting Sovereignty: Tribal Museums In The Great Lakes Region, 1969-2010, Meagan Mcchesney

Dissertations

This dissertation argues that the foundation and development of tribal museums in the Great Lakes region is a form of activism -- a deliberate action performed for the purpose of inciting positive political, social, cultural, and/or economic change -- and that the functions of tribal museums enable Native activism to continue and evolve to reflect and address new historical understandings and contemporary circumstances. I argue that in the Great Lakes region, Native activism continued beyond the highly publicized movement of the 1960s and 70s, and manifested in ways suited to address regionally and tribally-based needs. Control over interpretations of the …

A checklist was utilized to compare discipline policy information between handbooks published in the school years prior to and following implementation of Illinois Senate Bill 100. The results included 20 of the 23 schools' handbooks demonstrating an increase in their reflection of Senate Bill 100 requirements from the 2015-16 to 2016-17 school years with approximately half of the schools modifying handbook language from pre- to post-implementation years to remove zero-tolerance policies and reflect policies aligned with the Senate …

Characterization Of The Effects Of Sex And Estrogen Receptor Signaling On Antigen-Specific T Cells For Immunotherapy, Flor Cecilia Navarro Negredo Jan 2019

Characterization Of The Effects Of Sex And Estrogen Receptor Signaling On Antigen-Specific T Cells For Immunotherapy, Flor Cecilia Navarro Negredo

Dissertations

Adoptive cell transfer (ACT) immunotherapy using antigen (Ag)-specific T cells is partially effective treating several malignancies but numerous challenges remain in order to improve its therapeutic potential. The roles of host factors, such as sex hormone receptor signaling, that can affect the T cell anti-tumor function remain understudied. The work performed in this dissertation characterized the role of estrogen signaling on T cell function in vitro, and during ACT immunotherapy against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in vivo. Estrogen signaling through ERa enhanced the expression and secretion of Type I effector cytokines including IFNg, TNFa, and Granzyme B in male and female …

Protection From Staphylococcus Aureus Bloodstream Infection By Probiotic Exopolysaccharide, Wonbeom Paik Jan 2019

Protection From Staphylococcus Aureus Bloodstream Infection By Probiotic Exopolysaccharide, Wonbeom Paik

Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus is known to cause severe systemic infection with high mortality rates. Antibiotics are the only approved therapy for patients, but the widespread prevalence of antibiotic resistant strains limits treatment efficacy, and many patients succumb to the disease. Many probiotic agents are commercially available, but the mechanisms by which they benefit are not known. Understanding these mechanisms will help develop novel therapeutics that can improve healthcare, including systemic infections by S. aureus. Bacillus subtilis is a probiotic bacterium that produces an exopolysaccharide (EPS) that induces anti inflammatory macrophages (MΦ). We tested if EPS could be used for systemic S. …

The Study Of Evaluative Inquiry Within A Business Context: Social Learning Processes, Team-Level Infrastructure, And Guidelines For Practical Application, Marie Elizabeth Paydon

Dissertations

This three-article dissertation presents complementary perspectives on applying an Evaluative Inquiry (EI) within a business setting. Evaluative Inquiry is an inquiry model of organizational learning which blends evaluation and social learning processes to promote individual, team, and organizational learning and occurs within a broader organizational infrastructure. The first article details findings from a case study of participants engaged in EI, exploring how they engaged in social learning processes and how these enabled individual, team, and organizational learning outcomes. The second article details findings from the same case study but examines how engaging in the EI process generated and promoted infrastructural …

Dissertations

For approximately three years, the Chicago Public School (CPS) district has been undergoing a process of creating protocols, structures, and tools that will assist schools with the implementation of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). An on-going area of development for the district as well as for my school is developing teachers' abilities to support all students in the leveled tiers, particularly Tier 3. The purpose of this self-study is to understand, document, and analyze my actions (as the principal) while implementing MTSS Tier 3 (K-3) supports at my school. A self-study is a form of research educators use to understand …

Positive Behavior Intervention Supports And Relational Trust In An Elementary School: A Self-Study Of A Principal's Impact On Supportive Environment And Student Achievement, Marilou Salcepuedes Rebolledo

Dissertations

School discipline continues to this day to be the most challenging issue in education often resulting in students being excluded from their classroom and instruction. Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) is a necessity to ensure that students are in classrooms learning and supported socially and emotionally. The purpose of this self-study is for me to examine and identify ways that I as a leader engage the school community in building a positive learning environment through implementation of relational trust and common school-wide PBIS and expectations. The result of this study will provide leaders in elementary urban schools the tools necessary …

Behavioral Symptom Clusters, Inflammation, And Quality Of Life In Chronic Low Back Pain Patients, Anitha Saravanan Jan 2019

Behavioral Symptom Clusters, Inflammation, And Quality Of Life In Chronic Low Back Pain Patients, Anitha Saravanan

Dissertations

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a prevalent condition, often involving an inflammatory process. Those with CLBP frequently experience behavioral symptoms, including depressed mood, fatigue, and sleep disturbance, which may exacerbate pain and reduce quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this study was to identify behavioral symptom clusters (depressive mood, fatigue, poor sleep) in individuals with CLBP, and to determine whether there are differences in pain, QOL and inflammation (plasma IL-6) based on cluster membership. CLBP patients (N=69; age = 56±13 years) completed measures of pain, depressive mood, fatigue, sleep, and QOL. Blood was obtained for IL-6 measurement. LCA …

Prevalence And Potential Buffers Of Intergenerational Trauma In African American And Latinx Parent-Child Dyads, Kandace Thomas Jan 2019

Prevalence And Potential Buffers Of Intergenerational Trauma In African American And Latinx Parent-Child Dyads, Kandace Thomas

Dissertations

Buffering intergenerational trauma (IGT) is of great interest to researchers, policy makers and interventionists working to reduce the experience of trauma across generations within the family. IGT has been well studied among families who experienced the Holocaust and there is emerging IGT literature describing the impact of historical events and societal-based adverse experiences across generations. This study expanded upon the IGT literature by exploring and confirming the existence of IGT in a sample of primarily low-income African American and Latinx parents and their 6-year-old children; exploring pre-existing strengths and qualities in parents, such as Contemplative Self-Care (CSC) and Parent Self-Efficacy …

Addressing The School-To-Prison Pipeline Through Critical Self Reflection: A Self-Study Of Courageous And Transformative Leadership, Ernest D. Williams Jan 2019

Addressing The School-To-Prison Pipeline Through Critical Self Reflection: A Self-Study Of Courageous And Transformative Leadership, Ernest D. Williams

Dissertations

Research reveals that zero-tolerance policies lead to school suspensions of a disproportionate number of African American students in urban areas (Center for Civil [CCRR], 2015). Suspensions increase student failure rates and dropout likelihood and reduce the ability to graduate on time (Skiba, Arrendondo, & Williams, 2014). Studies have also shown that African American students are suspended three times more than their White American peers and two times more than their Latino American peers (CCRR, 2015). This has impelled federal and local government agencies, community organizations, and educators to question the effectiveness of punitive discipline policies that have marginalized black and …

An Action Research Project Addressing The Perception Of Strengths And Barriers To Communication At The Onset Of The Mtss Initiative Within The High School Setting, Taliah Ziyad-Nau

Dissertations

The issue that this study addresses is the communication of the MTSS initiative within the high school setting. The MTSS process will allow access to evidence based intervention programs for student social, emotional support. The study consists of parallel interview protocols to understand the perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses in the communication of how to access the student support services. The results of interviewing a sample of staff and parents to understand how to improve access to student social, emotional supports within the high school setting indicated that the strength of the MTSS initiative related to the availability of …

Yczr, A New Case Of Plp-Dependent Mocr/Gabr Type Transcription Regulator In Klebsiella Pneumonia, Yuanzhang Zheng Jan 2019

Yczr, A New Case Of Plp-Dependent Mocr/Gabr Type Transcription Regulator In Klebsiella Pneumonia, Yuanzhang Zheng

Dissertations

Increasing number of genes encoding PLP-dependent transcription regulators, MocR/GabR type regulators, have been identified in various bacterial genomes. However, only a handful of them, including MocR, PdxR and GabR have been studied experimentally. They control different aspects of the bacterial metabolism. Only GabR has reported crystallographic structures. MocR/GabR regulators possess a chimeric structure consisted of a WHTH DNA binding domain and an Aminotransferase-like regulation domain, which can bind PLP as an effector in transcription regulation. Such a chimeric construct presents an interesting case in molecular evolution. The regulation domains of All MocR/GabR type regulators loss their catalytic capacity during evolution …

Visual Feedback In Voice Therapy For Individuals With Parkinson's Disease, Rachel Brooke Convey

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Parkinson ’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects one’s movement. As the disease develops, individuals begin to present with symptoms that include but are not limited to bradykinesia, rigidity, tremors, and hypokinetic dysarthria. These symptoms affect a person’s entire body, including his/her voice. The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) program for treating individuals with PD is supported by over twenty-five years of research. It is considered a safe, non-invasive method to improve vocal loudness and speech clarity in individuals with PD. However, simply because LSVT is effective in its current state, it does not mean that the …
