Bear Den Landing: Creating Resilient Environments & Tribal Communities Through Ecological Planning & Public Participation On Fort Berthold Reservation, Morgan Davis-Kollman

Landscape Architecture Theses

Over half of the 135,000 miles of oil and gasoline pipelines in the U.S. were installed before 1969, with implementation of pipes occurring before maturation of steel or coating technology. Leaks and spills are becoming increasingly common within the realm of man-made environmental hazards. North Dakota is the second largest in oil production, suffering from 85 paramount oil spills in last 20 years. North Dakota tribal lands are faced with declining environmental issues as a majority of reservations located in areas of hazard, creating a state of crisis within their livable environment. A broken pipeline burst more than a million …

Global Awareness Of Marketing Students, Michael Latta Jan 2019

Global Awareness Of Marketing Students, Michael Latta

AMTP Proceedings 2019

Undergraduate and MBA Marketing programs typically include education goals such as:

“To prepare students for a changing domestic and global business environment characterized by organizational and cultural values, diversity, opportunity, and growth.”

They also include learning objectives such as:

“Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to think strategically about the global business environment.”

Presumably this approach to educating undergraduate and MBA students will prepare them to become ‘global citizens.’ The question may be asked about what undergraduate and MBA marketing students know about changes in global extreme poverty, education access for women around the world, and number of …

The Persistence Of "Dumb" Contracts, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2019

The Persistence Of "Dumb" Contracts, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

“Smart contracts” are a hot topic. Presently, smart contracts are mostly evidence of property, like crypto-currencies or mortgages, created and/or transferred on blockchain technology. This is an exploration of the theoretical possibilities of artificial intelligence in a far broader range of complex and heretofore negotiated transactions that occur over time. My goal is to understand what it means to make a contract smarter, i.e. to delegate more and more of the creation, performance, and disposition of legally binding transactions to machine thinking. Moreover, I want to do so from the perspective of one who is neither a true believer in …

Kindergarten Parent Engagement And Student Reading Literacy In Title I Schools: A Systematic Literature Review And Meta-Synthesis, Stacy L. M. Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to systematically review research on the relationship between parent engagement and student reading outcomes in Title I schools at Kindergarten level. The following research questions guided this study:

  1. What is the relationship between parent engagement and student reading literacy outcomes in low socioeconomic students in kindergarten? Findings show that parent engagement brings parents together with the school staff working with one another to promote a child’s reading literacy. Parent engagement includes the parent as an active member who shares responsibility for a child’s achievement. A need for teacher professional development for teachers on building …

Implementation Of The Instructional Practices Inventory – Technology Process With Fidelity: The Impact On Technology Use And Student Cognitive Engagement, Mekca Rae Wallace-Spurgin Jan 2019

Implementation Of The Instructional Practices Inventory – Technology Process With Fidelity: The Impact On Technology Use And Student Cognitive Engagement, Mekca Rae Wallace-Spurgin

Theses and Dissertations

This applied dissertation was designed to determine if students were using the recently purchased Chromebooks as well as if they were cognitively engaged when using the technology. Data collected using the IPI-T process suggested teachers were typically the users of the technology, students were often disengaged, and teachers were asking students to participate in lower-order surface activities. Missing from the process was the implementation of the faculty collaborative sessions.

The writer scheduled dates to collect data three times during the 2018-19 school year. In addition, faculty collaborative sessions were planned and facilitated within one week of collection data. Participating in …

Federal Offices Of Inspectors General: The Relationship Between Per Capita Staffing Levels And Performance Results, Craig Yuen Jan 2019

Federal Offices Of Inspectors General: The Relationship Between Per Capita Staffing Levels And Performance Results, Craig Yuen

Theses and Dissertations

Each year, the federal government spends trillions of dollars on operations and in awarding contracts, grants, loans, and other forms of financial assistance. Federal Offices of Inspectors General (OIGs) are charged with auditing and investigating fraud, waste, abuse, and misconduct affecting the government. There are 73 such OIGs – 40 of which have law enforcement authority and oversight responsibilities for a parent agency – and each is a separate organization with varying staffing levels and performance results. This study examined, on a per capita level, the relationship between staffing levels and performance results (criminal charges filed, financial recoveries, and questioned …

Law Enforcement Officer Body-Worn Camera Perceptions: Pre And Post Deployment, Benjamin Aaron Straight Jan 2019

Law Enforcement Officer Body-Worn Camera Perceptions: Pre And Post Deployment, Benjamin Aaron Straight

Theses and Dissertations

The 2014 fatal police shooting of Michael Brown resulted in (a) a national outcry for police departments to deploy body-worn cameras; and (b) community members and politicians demanding more transparency in the governmental administration of police work. Despite the increased media attention and deployment of body-worn cameras, there is little research on how law enforcement officers perceive body-worn cameras.

The Miami-Dade Police Department implemented a mandatory body-worn camera program on April 20, 2016. The department agreed to a partnership to conduct research on their officers' body-worn camera perceptions. The department internally distributed an electronic survey to 3,313 sworn officers and …

Against The Wind—Sustainability, Migration, Presidential Discretion, Steven Ferrey Jan 2019

Against The Wind—Sustainability, Migration, Presidential Discretion, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The weekend before Christmas 2018, the United States government began its longest shutdown in history, which extended well into the new year. The crisis was the result of the ongoing legal controversies surrounding migratory rights and U.S. immigration policy, and following the shutdown, President Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border. The executive branch has a constitutional responsibility to enforce all U.S. laws. However, while the Trump administration has focused pointedly on executive branch enforcement of immigration and migratory laws at the southern border, it has made no effort to enforce an international treaty and three long-standing U.S. …

Adaptation: Leveraging Modern Narratives Towards Preservation And Public Uses Of Pueblo Bonito's World Heritage Ruins In New Mexico's Central Chaco Canyon, Joseph Reed Jan 2019

Adaptation: Leveraging Modern Narratives Towards Preservation And Public Uses Of Pueblo Bonito's World Heritage Ruins In New Mexico's Central Chaco Canyon, Joseph Reed

Landscape Architecture Theses

This study focuses on creating new narratives to cultural heritage sites by comparing concepts of ruins from cultural heritage sites and post-industrial landscapes. Both landscapes share that unifying feature of ruins and the historical and cultural significance that comes with them. Such methodology has been the subject of many recent papers on the complex challenge of reclaiming post-industrial landscapes beyond an environmental engineering approach. In landscape design literature there is an approach to focus on industrial ruins as settings for parks worldwide. We propose a similar attention to cultural heritage ruins as parts of a new genre of parks. To …

Forming Neighborhood: Creating Community Identity Through Connectivity, Placemaking, And Functionality For The Urban Plains Development In Southwest Fargo, Luke Morman

Landscape Architecture Theses

The city of Fargo, ND has been growing steadily in recent years. This has brought up issues of urban sprawl and lack of intentional design because developers mainly just try to keep up with the demand. It is becoming a popular desire within neighborhoods and cities to create walkable and dense developments. Many cities have began increasing density and connecting different uses to follow along with this desire. Dean Schwanke - the Senior Vice President for a company, called Urban Land Institute, dedicated to researching land development - describes the trends of urban and suburban lifestyle with this generation: "The …

Un-Locking The River: Addressing Riparian Ecosystems And Public Recreation Opportunities Along The Mississippi River Gorge In Minneapolis, Minnesota, Michael L. Stottler

Landscape Architecture Theses

Lock and dam systems harm rivers across America by disrupting their natural processes and destroying their unique riparian ecosystems. Riverbed habitat is covered by sediments, water temperatures rise due to slower flows, and fish can no longer migrate their natural routes. Most lock and dam systems were built to accommodate for industrial uses and barge shipping, but as barge traffic has slowed and maintenance costs of dams has risen the viability of these systems has come under question. The restoration of the Mississippi River Gorge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will allow for natural processes to return after the removal of two …

Intersection Of Water Quality And Water Rights, Jennifer Mele, Trisha Oeth, Annette Quill

Water Law Review

The statutes pertaining to water quality under Title 25 article 8, the Water Quality Control Act, have one key tie to the statutes pertaining to water quantity under Tide 37, and that is the provision of section 25-8-104, C.R.S. (2018). This statute requires that nothing in the Water Quality Control Act shall "supersede, abrogate, or impair" the right to divert and use water or be "construed, enforced, or applied so as to cause or result in material injury to water rights." This provision also states "Nothing in this article shall be construed to allow the commission or the division to …
