Pattern Of Hard Seed Breakdown In Some Annual Self-Reseeding Legumes Under Mediterranean Field Conditions, Claudio Porqueddu, Antonello Franca, Rita A. M. Melis, Leonardo Sulas, Giovanni A. Re
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In the last decade a new generation of annual pasture legumes was released and introduced in the seed market for the Australian ley systems. In Sardinia (Italy), despite good agronomic performances in the first year, several of these new varieties showed low autumn re-establishment, reducing their competitiveness against native species and depressing any attempt for a long term pasture improvement (Porqueddu et al. 2010). Hardseedness may influence legume persistence. A study on the pattern of hard seed breakdown on some self-reseeding annual pasture legumes was carried out.
Perennial Legume Swards For Organic Farming System In Lithuania, Jonas Šlepetys, Alvyra Slepetiene
Perennial Legume Swards For Organic Farming System In Lithuania, Jonas Šlepetys, Alvyra Slepetiene
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The economic and ecological benefits of forage legumes are well known. While perennial legumes can be useful in various aspects (Ledgard 2001), some legumes have short persistence in swards (Frame et al.1998; Vaiciulyte and Bacenas 2008) which is undesirable for organic farms where no mineral nitrogen is applied. Early flowering red clover (Trifolium pratense), which is the most common legume in Lithuania, has high yields only in the first – second years of use. In the third year, it often disappears completely.
In Lithuania, fodder galega (Galega orientalis) is the most long lived legume exhibiting …

Ryegrass Seeding Rate Alters Plant Morphology And Size--Possible Implications For Pasture Persistence, Julia M. Lee, Errol R. Thom, David F. Chapman, Kate T. Wynn, C. Deanne Waugh, Laura Rossi
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Poor persistence of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a major dairy industry issue in New Zealand and Australia. New ryegrass seed is often drilled at 18-30 kg/ha, although previous research indicated that pastures drilled at 10-12 kg/ha can be just as productive (Frame and Boyd 1986; Praat et al. 1996). High seeding rates increase competition between developing seedlings for light, water and nutrients, reduce plant size (Harris 1990) and potentially survival.
The experiment reported here investigated the effect of plant density (created by differences in seeding rate) on plant morphology and survival. The hypothesis was that plants …
Trifolium Occidentale: A Valuable Genetic Resource For White Clover Improvement, Syed Wajid Hussain, Warren M. Williams
Trifolium Occidentale: A Valuable Genetic Resource For White Clover Improvement, Syed Wajid Hussain, Warren M. Williams
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Trifolium occidentale Coombe is a stoloniferous, diploid (2n=2x=16) perennial clover indigenous to Portugal, Spain, France, and the British Isles. It grows in relatively dry coastal habitats, in sand dunes and on shallow pocket of soil (Coombe 1961; Coombe and Morisset 1967). As the species grows naturally in saline, dry habitats, it is potentially a source of drought tolerance genes that could be used for the improvement of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) cultivars. Although T. occidentale is reported to be one of the progenitors of white clover (Williams et al. 2012), the 2x forms of T. occidentale cross …

Dry Matter Yield Of Perennial Ryegrass Cultivars Under Mechanical Cutting And Animal Grazing, Patrick A. Cashman, Trevor J. Gilliland, Michael O’Donovan, Marion Beecher, Mary Mcevoy
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Perennial ryegrass evaluation trials are essential to identifying and promoting the most productive cultivars for use at farm level to maximise sward productivity (Grogan and Gilliland 2011). Cultivar testing is predominantly conducted under simulated grazing trials to predict dry matter yield (DMY) performance under animal grazing. Previous studies have shown a high correlation in DMY between these two defoliation methods (Camlin and Stewart 1975; Creighton et al. 2010). In contrast, Binnie and Chestnutt (1991) demonstrated that swards grazed by animals had higher DMY performance than those exposed to simulated grazing managements. Animal pressures such as pulling, treading and nutrient …

The Intersection Of Deforestation And Economic Growth In The Brazilian Amazon, Victoria Oceguera
Student Theses 2015-Present
Abstract
As a result of capital gain, deforestation of the Amazon in Brazil continues. Brazilian government's insufficient efforts to mitigate and enforce the preservation of these precious forests has ledto the commodification of the Amazon. Chapter 1 uses historical and quantitative data to examine the negative impacts of deforestation on indigenous communities and climate change. Chapter2 employs economics to analyze the role of business as a crucial component of deforestation in Brazil. Chapter 3 engages politics in Brazil to discuss interactions between key actors involved in the perpetuation of deforestation. Chapter 3 examines the interactions between politics and corruption involved …

The Cleaning Seed Cotton Of Small Weed Impurities And Theoretical Research To Improve Its Efficiency, B Mardonov
The Cleaning Seed Cotton Of Small Weed Impurities And Theoretical Research To Improve Its Efficiency, B Mardonov
Scientific-technical journal
The authors identified theoretical patterns that describe the process of efficient extraction of small weed impurities from raw cotton. The results obtained allow us to establish the speed of the drum and the angle of its grip by the mesh surface, at which the required degree of loosening of the raw cotton is ensured, at which fine trash is effectively released. As a result of practical research, an innovative version of the cleaner has been developed.

Analysis Of Electrical Parameters Of The Ionization System At High Frequency Currents, X T. Yuldashev
Scientific-technical journal
The influence of the physical characteristics of the elements of the ionization system semiconductor-gas discharge gap on its sensitivity and the quality of the images is considered. An analysis of the patterns of image formation based on experimental studies and theoretical estimates showed that the high-frequency mode of the supply voltage determines the relatively low efficiency of modulation of the current by the input illumination, which is a consequence of the increasing role of the capacitive component of the conductivity of the photodetector at high frequencies and an increase in the resistance of the recording part (emulsion ) at low …

African Americans, currently over-represented among low SES groups, have been found to be among the most at risk groups for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Phenotypic expression, such as obesity, result from the combined effect of genetic inheritance and environmental influences. Environmental dynamics interact with individuals on micro, meso and ecto levels (Bronfrenbrenner, 1989), are diverse and cultural (Vygotsky, 1993) and are learned by individuals through modeling and observation (Bandura, 1989). Environmental factors such as parental influence and modeling, availability and accessibility of produce, sweetened drinks and fast foods, can contribute to or minimize the onset of obesity and type …

Human Relationships With Domestic And Other Animals: One Health, One Welfare, One Biology, Ariel M. Tarazona, Maria C. Ceballos, Donald M. Broom
Human-Animal Relationships Collection
Excessive human population growth, uncontrolled use of natural resources, including deforestation, mining, wasteful systems, biodiversity reduction by agriculture, and damaging climate change affect the existence of all animals, including humans. This discussion is now urgent and people are rethinking their links with the animals we use for clothing, food, work, companionship, entertainment, and research. The concepts of one health, one welfare, and one biology are discussed as a background to driving global change. Nothing should be exploited without considering the ethics of the action and the consequences. This review concerns domesticated animals, including those used for human consumption of meat, …

Climate Diagnostics Of The Extreme Floods In Peru During Early 2017, Rackhun Son, Shih-Yu Simon Wang, Wan-Ling Tseng, Christian W. Barreto Schuler, Emily Becker, Jin-Ho Yoon
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
From January through March 2017, a series of extreme precipitation events occurred in coastal Peru, causing severe floods with hundreds of human casualties and billions of dollars in economic losses. The extreme precipitation was a result of unusually strong recurrent patterns of atmospheric and oceanic conditions, including extremely warm coastal sea surface temperatures (SST) and weakened trade winds. These climatic features and their causal relationship with the Peruvian precipitation were examined. Diagnostic analysis and model experiments suggest that an atmospheric forcing in early 2017, which was moderately linked to the Trans-Niño Index (TNI), initiated the local SST warming along coastal …

An Integrated Flow-Curing Model For Predicting Residual Stresses In Textile Composites, Weijia Chen
An Integrated Flow-Curing Model For Predicting Residual Stresses In Textile Composites, Weijia Chen
Doctoral Dissertations
Fiber-reinforced composites have been widely employed in structural applications due to their high stiffness-to-weight ratio and easily-tailored mechanical properties. However, manufacturing of these lightweight materials involves an infusion and curing process, and flow-induced defects and residual stresses can easily occur, which can compromise the mechanical performance of the composite structures. The purpose of this work is to develop an integrated flow-curing processing model to accurately predict the resin flow front and the residual stresses in the Liquid Composite Molding (LCM) process. In the infusion model, the fiber fabrics are treated as a homogeneous and porous material, and the resin flow …
