"Teaching Discernment In A World That Eschews Truth", Amy Bessin Dec 2019

"Teaching Discernment In A World That Eschews Truth", Amy Bessin

The Christian Librarian

College students today have the harrowing task of sifting through massive amounts of information that no longer fits into nice, neat categories. The role of the librarian has shifted along with the information landscape, from the role of information gatekeeper to information guide. As information has become more prolific and accessible, it is more important than ever to teach students how to evaluate the information they discover to determine whether it is appropriate and relevant for their information need. In a world filled with fake news and constructed realities, the idea that truth has value, let alone exists, can seem …

"Contextualized Digital Library Evaluation: The Perseus Digital Library Within Theological Research", Paul Hartog

The Christian Librarian

As the development of digital libraries increases, the growth has been accompanied by a refinement of evaluation criteria and methods. Evaluators are increasingly aware that the context of digital library usage (the social, cultural, academic, and institutional environments of the users) is an essential consideration of effective assessment. This article evaluates the Perseus Digital Library through the needs and objectives of a specific learning community – those engaged in theological research. After a review of relevant literature, a rationale is given for ranking ten key facets of digital library evaluation by order of importance. These criteria are then applied to …

"When Good Intentions Aren't Good Enough: Signs Of Successful Archives", Joseph Coates Dec 2019

"When Good Intentions Aren't Good Enough: Signs Of Successful Archives", Joseph Coates

The Christian Librarian

In 2007, Calumet College of Saint Joseph decided to start a University Archives with the intention of preserving their institutional history. In 2009, they added the Bishop Andrew Grutka papers, with the intention of using this collection as the keystone for the archives. While this project had plenty of spiritual support, the institution failed to realize a few key concepts, such as funding, staffing, and what an archive does for a university. They also failed to see what makes an archive an archive. In the end, the archives were only around for about 5 years before being packed into the …

"The Future Of Libraries", Paul A. Roberts Dec 2019

"The Future Of Libraries", Paul A. Roberts

The Christian Librarian

Prompted by the article by Dan Cohen (2019), this essay will explore the possibilities of reversing the trend that Dr. Cohen presented and offer a solution that turned the library statistics of one library around dramatically. To change the habits of patron usage, faculty will need to work with the library to make it happen.

The Great Unfulfilled Promise Of Tinker, Mary-Rose Papandrea Dec 2019

The Great Unfulfilled Promise Of Tinker, Mary-Rose Papandrea

Faculty Publications

The most famous line from Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District is that “[i]t can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” 393 U.S. 503, 506. People who know only this line from Tinker—and the victory it gave to the Vietnam-war protesting students—likely think of it as an incredibly speech-protective decision. It turns out that although Tinker contains lofty language about the importance of student speech rights, it sowed the seeds for the erosion of those very same rights. In the past …

An Explorative Case-Study Of The Use Of Peerwise To Foster Student Centred, And Peer Supported, Learning In A First-Year Business Module, Anna Dynan, Barry Ryan Dec 2019

An Explorative Case-Study Of The Use Of Peerwise To Foster Student Centred, And Peer Supported, Learning In A First-Year Business Module, Anna Dynan, Barry Ryan

Articles

Peer based learning is not a new concept in business studies in higher education; however, the integration of technology enabled and asynchronous peer learning has limited reported use and even less evidence based evaluation. In this explorative case study, the online tool PeerWise was used to scaffold and support an asynchronous peer-learning environment for a group of 212 first year business studies students. Students were required to create, answer and rate multiple choice questions on topics aligned to their curriculum within the peer constructed PeerWise question database. While there was no statistically significant correlation between PeerWise engagement and final module …
